Folio (13-1/2 by 18 inches), original gray cloth clamshell box, gilt-stamped brown morocco label affixed to front cover, eight-page unstitched booklet and 12 vintage gelatin silver prints, loose as issued. $1850.Signed limited first edition of this folio collection of stellar portraiture by Karsh, number 106 of only 590 copies, presentation/association copy inscribed on the final text leaf by him: “To: Catherine G. Curran with the best wishes of Yousef Karsh 1980,” with 12 vintage gelatin silver prints of portraiture by Karsh, featuring eminent figures such as Albert Schweitzer, Albert Einstein, Carl Jung and Helen Keller.Renowned photographer and portraitist Yousuf Karsh once wrote that his lifelong “fascination with scientists may well stem from my original desire to be a physician. Therefore, it has been especially meaningful to me to portray those men and women who are devoted to the art of healing” (Karsh, 140). This exceptional signed limited folio first edition brings together 12 vintage gelatin silver prints of leading physicians, scientists and healers “of the spirit”—an assemblage of exhibition-size prints that features some of KarshÂ’s finest work, including his portraits of Einstein, Helen Keller, Albert Schweitzer, Jung, Sir Alexander Fleming and others. See Karsh 144-145. Inscribed to Catherine G. Curran, an active New York patron of the arts, including ballet and photography; as President of the Sidney Gamble Foundation for China Studies she oversaw a collection of early photographs of China taken by her father.Original clamshell box with minor splits at spine foot, slight soiling, light rubbing to spine and corners.         Archive of 29 pressbooks for films with literary sources produced between 1937-1976

Various cities: Various Studios, 1976. An archive of 29 pressbooks for films with literary sources produced between 1937 and 1976, with the bulk of the collection running from the late 1950s to the early 1970s. Since movies began, filmmakers have mined the literary canon for ideas, many working under the assumption that a good story makes a good movie. Therefore it stands to reason that most of the twentieth century's most popular authors have found their way to the silver screen, among them William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Raymond Chandler, Carson McCullers, Agatha Christie, and Henry Miller, each being represented in the archive. 8.5 x 11 inches to 14 x 19 inches. Generally Very Good plus, some with horizontal creases, light edgewear, or occasional faint foxing. Complete collation details on request.

        American Monument

1976. First Edition . FRIEDLANDER, Lee. The American Monument. New York: Eakins, (1976). Oblong folio, original post-bound blue-gray cloth. $3000.First edition of this comprehensive photographic work on public monuments, one of only 2000 copies, with 213 photogravure plates.“Twelve years in the making, The American Monument is almost maniacally inclusive, rounding up everything from Plymouth Rock to a plaque commemorating the Pony Express in Salt Lake City and treating them all with the same deliberate nonchalance. The doggedness of FriedlanderÂ’s quest is at once astounding and hilariousÂ… FriedlanderÂ’s memorials, no matter how solidly anchored, seem adrift, lost in the landscape, unnoticed if not forgottenÂ… Tidy arrangements of two, three and four pictures multiply obsessively as the bookÂ’s momentum builds; towards the end, there are accumulations of six and nine photos to a page. The result is overwhelming, as it clearly was intended to be. History stalks the landscape at every turn” (Roth, 236). Open Book 310. A fine copy.

Fire Flies: As Transmitted by William Larson

Philadelphia: Gravity Press, 1976. Near fine in printed wrappers, housed in the scarce silver cardboard slipcase showing significant wear including a several splits, tape repair, and loss to the edges.. First Edition. Oblong quarto. SIGNED and INSCRIBED: "To Jeff, with great respect for your work and your commitment, on the / occasion of your MFA show. / Affectionately, William Larson 5/7/81 at 10:34 AM." Also with teleprinted self portrait, SIGNED, tipped-in above the inscription on the title page. Revelatory collection of digitally generated images created by William Larson between 1969-1976. Gitterman Gallery's 2015 retrospective of the series explained the process: "Larson used a Graphic Sciences DEX 1 Teleprinter, a sophisticated early fax machine, which converted pictures, text and sound into digitally-generated audio signals. These signals were transmitted over a telephone line and a stylus burned the image onto a special carbon-based paper, creating a unique 'electronic drawing.' He was able to manipulate these images by altering the voltage of the output during the printing process, by moving the stylus during printing and by sending multiple transmissions to the same page, electronically layering images, text and visual representations of sound." Important and underrated generative artist book.

        Christina's World; Wyeth at Kuerners

1976. First Edition . Signed. (WYETH, Andrew) WYETH, Betsy James. Christina's World. WITH: Wyeth at Kuerners. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1976, 1982. Two volumes. Folio (13-1/2 by 10-1/2 inches), original half tan morocco gilt, linen boards. Housed together in original linen slipcase. $2700.Signed limited first editions of these lavishly illustrated studies by Andrew Wyeth on two of his most famous subjects, number 65 of only 200 sets, signed by Wyeth and the author, his wife Betsy James Wyeth in each volume.""With watercolor, you can pick up the atmosphere, the temperature, the sound of snow shifting through the trees or over the ice of a small pond or against a windowpane. Watercolor perfectly expresses the free side of my nature"" (Andrew Wyeth). The text, preparatory sketches, watercolors and temperas of Christina's World trace the artist's long relationship with his model Christina Olson, culminating in Wyeth's famous painting ""Christina's World"" (1948). Likewise, Wyeth at Kuerners reproduces hundreds of sketches and paintings made at the Kuerner family farm over the course of 44 years. Scores of the paintings and sketches collected in these two volumes had never been reproduced before. Faint foxing to first few leaves in each volume, including limitation pages.         Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter Signed Photograph.

Signed color photograph of Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter shaking hands. The photograph measures 3.5 inches by 5.5 inches. Double matted and framed. The complete piece measures 11 inches by 13 inches. The United States presidential election of 1976 was the 48th quadrennial presidential election, held on Tuesday, November 2, 1976. The winner was the relatively unknown Jimmy Carter, a former Governor from Georgia with his running mate, Walter Mondale, the U.S. Senator from Minnesota, the Democratic candidates, over the incumbent President Gerald Ford from Michigan and his running mate, Bob Dole, the U.S. Senator from Kansas, the Republican candidates. President Richard Nixon had resigned in 1974 in the wake of the Watergate scandal, but before doing so, he appointed Ford as Vice President via the 25th Amendment after Spiro Agnew resigned. Ford was thus the only sitting President who had never been elected to national office. Saddled with a poor economy, the fall of South Vietnam, and paying a heavy political price for his pardon of Nixon, Ford first faced serious opposition from within his own party, when he was challenged for the Republican Party's nomination by former California governor and future President Ronald Reagan. The race was so close that Ford was unable to secure the nomination until the Party Convention. Carter, who was less well known than other Democratic hopefuls, ran as a Washington outsider and reformer. He narrowly won the election, becoming the only president to date ever elected from Georgia and the first from the Deep South since Zachary Taylor in 1848. It was a notable election as all four presidential and vice-presidential candidates would ultimately lose a presidential election. Ford lost this year's election and Carter failed in his bid for re-election in 1980; Mondale lost the 1984 election to incumbent Ronald Reagan in a landslide, and Dole lost his 1996 bid to incumbent Bill Clinton. It was also the most recent presidential election where the candidate who won the most states did not win the election, as well as the last time Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina and Texas voted for the Democratic candidate.

1 TLS (Typed Letter Signed) on the Wild Bunch, March 6, 1976

Typed on 8 1/2" x 11" paper, signed by Sam Peckinpah on March 6, 1976 from the Hotel Konigshorf where he was residing. The Wild Bunch was the first realistic violent film of the Old West. When the studio decided to screen it in Kansas City, the audience reacted violently, some were throwing up, others threatening the operator of the projector while Sam Peckinpaugh looked down with delight and said that he was ready to take on all comers himself if they burst into the booth. The studio issued instead a seriously cut version which made no sense but in this letter the fan wants to see the uncut version. Peckinpah here promises when he returns from Europe, he will be delighted to show the fan the real film (not the fan who claims to have seen the edited version 17 times). "Thanks you for your obvious support of the San Peckinpah Benevolent Fund. Every cent helps." A little damp staining to lower edge not affecting letter.

        Visiting Card.

72 x 37mm gilt edged visiting card "Mr Scrope Davies" pasted onto a printed sheet containing an advertisement for an edition of Byron's Parisina. Tape marks and browning to the verso of the sheet from previous framing, the card itself in very good condition. From the collection of Bevis Hillier, himself a kinsman of Davies, being descended, via his paternal grandmother, a Davies, from Scrope's brother, the Rev. Thomas Davies. "In 1976, the Times reported a story of an unusual find in the Barclay Bank's vaults. Scrope Davies's leather trunk was identified, and as Davies being a close associate of both Byron and Shelley, the news was pronounced swoon worthy. The trunk's contents were deposited on loan to the Department of Manuscripts at the British Library, and the papers were bound into twenty-three volumes, two of which consisted entirely of letters and bills from bankers and moneylenders and two of records of bets. Of course, the trunk also held an original manuscript of Canto 3 of Childe Harold's Pilgrimage and two previously unknown sonnets ("Hymn to Intellectual Beauty" and "Mont Blanc") by Shelley, the find was termed a major success. Thus was Scrope Davies, a man in the know in the Byron tempestuous circle. Davies was an inveterate gambler and a prodigal spender. According to tales of the time, he lost between £16,000 and £17,000 in one calendar year. He was known to drink heavily and to womanize freely." Bevis Hillier, as a distant relation, was given the chance to look at the trunk at an early stage. Barclays also allowed him to write the front-page scoop in the London Times about the find. In acknowledgement of his role in breaking the news to the nation and the family connection, Barclays gave Hillier this visting card from the trunk, which he then made pasted onto the sheet of Parisina, mounted and framed. The sprightly foreword by Bevis Hillier to T. A. J. Burnett's The Rise and Fall of a Regency Dandy. The Life and Times of Scrope Berdmore Davies epitomizes the urbane, irrepressible Scrope: ''a carrier, but not a victim, of the epidemic disease of the early 19th century, the Romantic Agony.''

The Ad Hoc bulletin (Marxist-Leninist) [13 issues of the newsletter produced by the FBI-financed pseudo-faction in the Communist Party, USA]

Chicago: the Committee, 1976. Thirteen issues of the photoreproduced bulletin on 8.5x14 inch sheets stapled at upper left corner; length ranges from 9 to 16 pages per issue. Faint horizontal fold crease to all issues, minor toning to the first one. Issues included are vol. 7 nos. 3, 4; vol. 8 nos. 1 [with final page loose but present] and 3, vol. 9 nos. 1 and 2, vol. 10 nos. 1 and 2, vol. 11 no. 1, vol. 14 no. 3, a Special Edition on the Communist Party's 21st national convention in 1975 (this issue in 8.5x11 inch format), and two with inconsistent, divergent numbering, No. 3 vol. 2 (November 1975) and No. 4, vol. 1 (May 1976). The identity of the Ad Hoc Committee has long been unclear; some have claimed it was a secret faction in the Chicago branch of the CPUSA, though one wonders how such an ardently Maoist formation could have tolerated remaining in the CPUSA for so many years. The riddle has been resolved through declassified FBI documents. In the book "Heavy Radicals," Aaron J. Leonard and Conor A. Gallagher transcribe FBI documents showing that the Committee was actually a project of agent S.A. Stallings, designed to disrupt the CPUSA by creating "in the eyes of the CP the existence of a factional grouping within the Illinois district and nationally if possible which adheres to the Chinese interpretation of Marxism-Leninism..." These bulletins, which make very passable use of M-L jargon and polemical style, were designed to sow discord and mistrust between revolutionaries with the ultimate goal of weakening the movement. Each issue includes a prominent call for funds to be sent to a PO Box, and it is possible that some of the content was also written and submitted by real believers, published in the pages of the Bulletin for additional verisimilitude. The earliest issue here, from June 1969, includes a piece on "Black liberation and working class solidarity" by the chairman (not named here, but apparently Donald Wright, who went on to disrupt other Marxist-Leninist organizations). For more on the FBI and the Ad Hoc Committee, see "The U.S. Domestic Intelligence Enterprise: History, Development, and Operations" by Darren E. Tromblay, beginning on page 383.
