        Visiting Card.

72 x 37mm gilt edged visiting card "Mr Scrope Davies" pasted onto a printed sheet containing an advertisement for an edition of Byron's Parisina. Tape marks and browning to the verso of the sheet from previous framing, the card itself in very good condition. From the collection of Bevis Hillier, himself a kinsman of Davies, being descended, via his paternal grandmother, a Davies, from Scrope's brother, the Rev. Thomas Davies. "In 1976, the Times reported a story of an unusual find in the Barclay Bank's vaults. Scrope Davies's leather trunk was identified, and as Davies being a close associate of both Byron and Shelley, the news was pronounced swoon worthy. The trunk's contents were deposited on loan to the Department of Manuscripts at the British Library, and the papers were bound into twenty-three volumes, two of which consisted entirely of letters and bills from bankers and moneylenders and two of records of bets. Of course, the trunk also held an original manuscript of Canto 3 of Childe Harold's Pilgrimage and two previously unknown sonnets ("Hymn to Intellectual Beauty" and "Mont Blanc") by Shelley, the find was termed a major success. Thus was Scrope Davies, a man in the know in the Byron tempestuous circle. Davies was an inveterate gambler and a prodigal spender. According to tales of the time, he lost between £16,000 and £17,000 in one calendar year. He was known to drink heavily and to womanize freely." Bevis Hillier, as a distant relation, was given the chance to look at the trunk at an early stage. Barclays also allowed him to write the front-page scoop in the London Times about the find. In acknowledgement of his role in breaking the news to the nation and the family connection, Barclays gave Hillier this visting card from the trunk, which he then made pasted onto the sheet of Parisina, mounted and framed. The sprightly foreword by Bevis Hillier to T. A. J. Burnett's The Rise and Fall of a Regency Dandy. The Life and Times of Scrope Berdmore Davies epitomizes the urbane, irrepressible Scrope: ''a carrier, but not a victim, of the epidemic disease of the early 19th century, the Romantic Agony.''

The Ad Hoc bulletin (Marxist-Leninist) [13 issues of the newsletter produced by the FBI-financed pseudo-faction in the Communist Party, USA]

Chicago: the Committee, 1976. Thirteen issues of the photoreproduced bulletin on 8.5x14 inch sheets stapled at upper left corner; length ranges from 9 to 16 pages per issue. Faint horizontal fold crease to all issues, minor toning to the first one. Issues included are vol. 7 nos. 3, 4; vol. 8 nos. 1 [with final page loose but present] and 3, vol. 9 nos. 1 and 2, vol. 10 nos. 1 and 2, vol. 11 no. 1, vol. 14 no. 3, a Special Edition on the Communist Party's 21st national convention in 1975 (this issue in 8.5x11 inch format), and two with inconsistent, divergent numbering, No. 3 vol. 2 (November 1975) and No. 4, vol. 1 (May 1976). The identity of the Ad Hoc Committee has long been unclear; some have claimed it was a secret faction in the Chicago branch of the CPUSA, though one wonders how such an ardently Maoist formation could have tolerated remaining in the CPUSA for so many years. The riddle has been resolved through declassified FBI documents. In the book "Heavy Radicals," Aaron J. Leonard and Conor A. Gallagher transcribe FBI documents showing that the Committee was actually a project of agent S.A. Stallings, designed to disrupt the CPUSA by creating "in the eyes of the CP the existence of a factional grouping within the Illinois district and nationally if possible which adheres to the Chinese interpretation of Marxism-Leninism..." These bulletins, which make very passable use of M-L jargon and polemical style, were designed to sow discord and mistrust between revolutionaries with the ultimate goal of weakening the movement. Each issue includes a prominent call for funds to be sent to a PO Box, and it is possible that some of the content was also written and submitted by real believers, published in the pages of the Bulletin for additional verisimilitude. The earliest issue here, from June 1969, includes a piece on "Black liberation and working class solidarity" by the chairman (not named here, but apparently Donald Wright, who went on to disrupt other Marxist-Leninist organizations). For more on the FBI and the Ad Hoc Committee, see "The U.S. Domestic Intelligence Enterprise: History, Development, and Operations" by Darren E. Tromblay, beginning on page 383.

Artificial Eye 1976 - Vintage original 30 x 40" (76 x 102 cm.) maquette artwork painting, and 30 x 40" (76 x 102 cm.) quad poster, UK. Eva Kotamanidou, Vangelis Kazan, dir: Theo Angelopoulos; Artificial Eye. Angelouolos' staggering retelling of the story of Electra, set in 20th-century Greece between the years 1939 and 1952. The film is composed of long, single, unbroken takes (many of them 10-minutes long or even longer), and even a film as stylistically complex as Hitchcock's Rope is, by comparison, simple. We are offering here the original maquette/artist's design (in pencil, gouache and watercolor) and the actual poster itself. Maquette has two vertical creases, but is otherwise unfolded; there are a few small tears at the top; there are some scattered traces of extra ink and paint from when the painting was executed, VERY GOOD.         The Book of Los.

Clairvaux, Jura, France: by the Trianon Press for the William Blake Trust, London, 1976 - Large quarto. Original tan full morocco, spine lettered in gilt. With the original hand-made marbled slipcase. A few light marks to covers, a few spots to fore-edge, an excellent copy. Colour plates reproducing the original Book of Los. First edition thus, copy II of 32 copies bound in full morocco with an original guide sheet, stencil and copperplate, and a set of extra plates showing progressive stages of the collotype and hand-stencil process, from a total edition of 538 copies, printed on Arches pure rag paper made to match the paper used by Blake. Blake scholar Geoffrey Keynes (1887-1982), the brother of John Maynard, provides a commentary and bibliographical history. "The Book of Los was the first of the two small books executed by Blake mainly as etchings on copper to be printed as ordinary intaglio plates. The Book of Ahania was the companion volume The title-pages of both books were dated by Blake 1795, so that they were probably the last ones to be produced in his Lambeth house. Each book exists in only a single copy The Book of Los has been since 1866 in the British Museum" (Keynes). Only one copy of the Book of Los is known. These beautifully produced facsimiles of Blake are now highly regarded in their own right. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Conceptual Artists' Books by Peg Griffith

Chicago: Various publishers, 1976-1990. Some loss to the spirals on several books; very good to near fine overall.. Artist's books. Small quartos. Collection of seven artists' books, of which six are likely unique, possibly as maquettes. Though created over a period of nearly twenty-five years, the books are remarkably consistent in terms of their minimalist aesthetic and conceptual framework. Utilizing text, tipped-in photographs, and clean line-drawings, these quiet and obliquely feminist books seem to investigate and experiment with the use of image as an unreliable cipher for ideas. Several of the books appear to be inscribed to Mary Dougherty, an artist associated with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's department of Generative Art; one of the books also documents a performance from an exhibition curated by Dougherty. Altogether, a fascinating and compelling collection from a little known movement of conceptual art. Most titles scarce or not found in OCLC. 1. In and Around the Hardware Store, A Collection by Peg Griffith. Chicago: Running Dog Press, 1976. Limited Edition 44/100 hand numbered copies. Quarto, comb-bound. SIGNED to colophon page. An artists' book in which typed text and simple, hand drawn images alternate. A few small spots of discoloration to to cover, else near fine in printed, white plastic comb-bound wrappers. Scarce, three copies located in OCLC. 2. A Particular Book on a 12" Span. (Chicago:) n.p., 1979. Unique artist book, apparently a preliminary to final maquette (if realized). Square octavo, stapled. SIGNED and inscribed, "For Pete / from Peg". Conceptual book that begins with a map of the world and, using a brown dot sticker as focus point, telescopes through eleven photocopied images of maps, directories, and photographs until zooming in on a page of Plato's Republic. Contains various pen notations and corrections. Lightly worn and toned, overall near fine in printed wrappers. A scarce title, possibly never realized; not found in OCLC. 3. M.J.'s Illustrated Book. Chicago: (Peg Griffith,) 1979. Unique artist's book, possibly a maquette. Small square quarto, comb-bound. Opening page notes that the book was "prepared by Peg Griffith as a part of 'A Performance Sequence' [at] Arc Gallery, Chicago, August 2nd and 3rd, 1979." Contains seven tipped-in black and white photographs with text, phrased in the form of instructions or commands, handwritten opposite. The text is corrected with white tape in several instances. Two photos are loose from glue backing, an additional two photos appear to be removed or lost. Title not found in OCLC. 4. Then What Happens Is. Chicago: R.A.U. Connections, 1979. Unique artists' book, possibly a maquette. Square quarto, comb-bound. SIGNED and inscribed to a tracing paper page over the handwritten colophon, "For Mary D. / with love from Peg / December 1979". Colophon notes that, "parts of this book originally were presented in Mary Dougherty's "A Performance Sequence" [at] Arc Gallery, 6 West Hubbard St Chicago, August 2, 1979". Contains eight tipped-in black and white photographs with handwritten text opposite. Tracks the hidden narrative explaining the locations and destinations of several clothing related objects. Reuses some of the same images found in M.J.'s Illustrated book. Near fine in hand-lettered boards. Scarce; OCLC locates two copies. 5. I Saw Them As I Passed. Chicago: N.p., 1985. Artist's book. Quarto, stapled. Dated and noted "Chicago" in pencil, likely by Griffith, to the colophon page. A particularly oblique conceptual artists' book. Consists of a series of illustrations, photocopied art, and found clip art images appear to move through a series of themes, including running men, a frame, and an enigmatic girl's face. Near fine in lightly worn wrappers. Scarce, possibly unique; title not found in OCLC. 6. Castlemaine, Camels, Casks and Chasms, Australia. N.p.p.: n.p., 1988. Artists' book. Quarto, comb-bound. SIGNED to inside of back cover. Conceptually systematic artist book in the form of a travelogue. Using clean, draftsman like drawings and neat hand-lettering, a trip from Chicago to Australia is minutely documented, often in the form of hand-drawn reproductions of various travel ephemera such as tickets, postcards, and food packaging. Near fine in clear acetate wrappers. Scarce, possibly unique; not found in OCLC. 7. How To Make Art Objects. (Chicago: N.p.,) 1990. Artist's book. Quarto, comb-bound. SIGNED and inscribed, "For Mary / with love- / on the occasion of / her fiftieth birthday / Peg Griffith / May 1990". Seven tipped-in color photographs with strips of computer printed text, also tipped-in. Starting with a neutral image of a "cleared surface", the book humorous documents several permutations and the eventual abandonment of an artist project; the documentation of the proposed projects become the artwork itself. An appealing light conceptual joke. Unique; the title not found in OCLC.
