Correspondance manuscrite complète d'Henry Miller avec Béatrice Commengé

      - S.n, Pacific Palisades (CA) 1976-1978, 23 pages A4.

        Wyeth at Kuerners

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1976. First edition. Illustrated by Andrew Wyeth. Oblong 4to. Olive buckram. Fine, in very good dust jacket. First edition. Illustrated by Andrew Wyeth. Oblong 4to. Inscribed on half-title to Lincoln Kirstein, "For Lincoln with love - / Betsy." Kirstein, who was on the board of MoMA, met Andrew Wyeth after the museum acquired CHRISTINA'S WORLD in 1948. Wyeth was still largely unknown at that time, and he quickly came to rely on Kirstein for support and honest criticism of his work. "Kirstein appointed himself Wyeth's friend, admirer, mentor, and stern critic - in essence a supersuccessor to NC. [...] Wyeth thinks that in the 1950s he needed Kirstein to push him toward more form in his work, more solidity" (Meryman, p.239, 243). Kirstein, who disdained most abstract art, was essential in providing Wyeth the confidence he needed to continue work in the face of hostile critics who derided his art as sentimental and unsophisticated. Wyeth was fond of quoting Kirstein's dismissive opinion of the critics, "Why do you want approval from those horses' asses?" (ibid, p. 390). Kirstein was a father-figure to two generations of Wyeth artists, and as Andrew's son Jamie developed his own artistic gifts, Kirstein began to transfer his attention to the younger Wyeth. "After posing for nineteen-year-old Jamie, Kirstein more or less shifted his allegiance from Andrew and became Jamie's friend and mentor. Kirstein told Betsy, 'You gave me the only son I ever had'" (ibid, p. 275). Meryman, Andrew Wyeth: A Secret Life (1998)

        An account of my hut.

Pawlet, VT: The Banyan Press, 1976. 8vo (26.5 cm, 10.4"). [30] pp. One of the great classical Japanese essays: Kamo no Ch?mei's H?j?ki, translated into English by Donald Keene and here in an elegantly minimalist fine press limited edition from Claude Fredericks of the Banyan Press. Some describe the work as "the Walden Pond of medieval Japan." This is the => first book-form edition of the translation, following its original appearance in Keene's Anthology of Japanese Literature; three hundred copies were set by hand in Garamond and printed on Masa paper by Fredericks and David Beeken. Original hand-stitched wrappers resembling bamboo grain, with paper label on front wrapper, in paper overlay matching the endpapers; outer overlay with minor edge wear and with small annotation (possibly from publisher) on label. A lovely and uncommon production.

        Couples: A Short Story

Cambridge: Halty Ferguson. 1976. Of a total edition of 276 copies, this is copy number 16 of 250 numbered copies signed by the author. Fine in wrappers. This copy is also inscribed by Updike -- he has personalized the signature on the colophon in a different color ink -- and it includes a brief signed note by Updike on the prospectus, with a hand-addressed mailing envelope. By all appearances, Updike informed the collector of the existence of this edition by sending him a prospectus with a note saying "I thought you should be aware of this" and then the collector ordered the book and Updike personalized the signature for him. A mini-footnote to the relatively early years of Updike's being a highly collected author with numerous signed limited editions to his credit, with a glimpse of Updike's active involvement in helping a collector build his collection. First Edition. Softcover. Fine.

        The Winchester Malory: A Facsimile

London: Early English Text Society, 1976. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. Large, thick 4to. First edition. Gilt-lettered cloth boards. Facsimile of the 473-leaf manuscript. Cloth lightly rubbed, else this is a fine copy. Except for the introduction by Ker, the book is comprised entirely of photographs of the celebrated manuscript. The introduction discusses not only the paper and writing, but also the history of the manuscript, 'discovered' in 1934. It was known for at least 100 years prior to that date as a copy of the Morte d'Arthur, but dismissed as a defective copy of the text used by Caxton. In 1934 it was shown that the Winchester manuscript is a separate text from Caxton's, differing in many details. This full photographic reproduction is in black and white, but two plates are printed in red as well, to show the unusual scribal technique of using red ink for certain names and phrases. Uncommon in the first edition. Gaines A25.

A collection of his first editions in superb condition.

London & New York: various publishers, 1898–1976 - 22 works in 50 volumes, octavo format, various sizes. All in the original cloth (except The People's Rights, in original wrappers). With the dust jackets where issued (except The River War). Generally in exceptional condition. Photgraphic plates and maps throughout. An exceptional collection of all the main texts in the Churchill corpus, in superb condition throughout, including one of only two known copies of Lord Randolph Churchill (1906) in the dust jacket, and one of only three such copies of Liberalism and the Social Problem (1909, one of these being substantially damaged). Further rarities include the case-bound issue of India (1930), in the extremely uncommon dust jacket, a copy of his 1910 pamphlet The People's Rights, in the original wrappers, and genuinely fine copies of most titles, from his first published book, The Story of the Malakand Field Force (1898), to My Early Life (1930), his first book of sustained biography, in the dust jacket, together with superlative examples of his works from the Wilderness Years. There are also excellent jacketed sets of his great voluminous titles, notably The World Crisis (1923–31) and Marlborough (1933–8). In almost all instances the given copy is the best we have handled. These copies were originally collected by Mark Weber (d. 2016), who during more than 30 years trading as the Churchill Book Specialist kept back for his own private collection the best available copy of each Churchill title. The result is a once-in-a-generation collecting opportunity. An individual catalogue description for each book is available on request. a) The Story of the Malakand Field Force. London, New York & Bombay: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1898. First edition, home issue, sole printing, first state. Original cloth, a superlative copy: "Truly fine copies are extreme rarities, and even those with routine wear and tear are difficult to find" (Langworth). Cohen A1.1.a. b) The River War. London, New York and Bombay: Longmans, Green & Co., 1899. First edition, first impression, second state. 2 vols., original cloth, a remarkably tight and fresh copy: "the heavy pages put a lot of strain on the binding, and many copies are found with hinge or gutter breaks" (Langworth). From the library of Scotttish peer and soldier John Stewart-Murray, 7th Duke of Atholl (1840–1917), whose son served in the Sudan. Cohen A2.1.b. c) Savrola. New York: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1900.         The Collected Essays of Sir Winston Churchill, complete in four volumes

London: Library of Imperial History, 1976. First edition. Hardcover. This exceptional set of ChurchillÂ’s Collected Essays is among the best-preserved examples of the vellum bindings we have seen. This four-volume set is a compilation of most of Churchill's major forewords and periodical contributions, some of which can be otherwise found only in the original periodical publications. The essays are sorted by subject and each of the volumes has a theme - Churchill and War, Churchill and Politics, Churchill and People, and Churchill at Large. In addition to being bibliographically important, The Collected Essays are aesthetically appealing. The production quality is impressive. There were two publisher binding options for The Collected Essays - both sumptuous and one positively extravagant. The lesser of the two was bound in quarter blue morocco and is lovely, but does not match the other 34 volumes of The Collected Works. The more elaborate binding option was full natural calfskin vellum with individual green slipcases, matching the 34 volumes of the preceding Centenary Edition of Churchill's book-length works. The bindings feature Churchill's coat of arms stamped in gilt. The text is printed on special 500-year archival paper and decorated with marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, head and foot bands, and silk ribbon markers. Each volume is protected in a dark green leather slipcase with the Churchill coat of arms embossed in gilt on the front cover. Either binding of The Collected Essays is scarce, but this more elaborate binding is rarely seen alone, as it is essential to completing a uniform full set of The Collected Works. The vellum bindings were meant to tone and age naturally, but often yellow both considerably and unevenly. This is only the second time we have been able to offer a set this compellingly bright and clean. The bindings are pristine with unusually bright vellum showing no appreciable signs of toning or handling, perfectly square and tight with sharp corners and no visible wear. Shelf presentation is magnificent, the spines sparklingly bright and clean. Condition of the set appears flawless. The contents are likewise immaculate, crisp and apparently unread, with satin ribbon markers apparently still in the original position placed by the publisher. We find no previous ownership marks. The gilt page edges are vividly bright with no discernible flaws noted. The green leather slipcases of this edition are likewise exceptionally clean, with only a few trivial scuffs and bumps to extremities. An exceptional example of an important work, with both compelling contents and striking shelf presence. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A286, Woods/ICS A146(b), Langworth p.355.

Primer Congreso del Partido Comunista de Cuba: Memorias; 3 Volumes [SIGNED]

Departmento de Orientacià n Revolucionaria del Comità Central del Partido Comunista de Cuba, La Habana 1976 - Three volumes. White full cloth with gilt lettering on front boards in glossy red, blue, black and green jackets featuring silhouettes of a mass of people with upraised weapons against a Cuban flag. Square quartos. It is possible - indeed, likely - that this inscription is addressed to Raúl Curbelo Morales, a party loyalist who served as head of the air force during the Bay of Pigs invasion, and later as vice-president of INRA and minister of communications. 384 + 11 [photos]; 420; 188 + 63 [photos]. Illustrated with black and white as well as color photographs. Jackets chipped with peeling laminate in some places, damp staining (primarily visible on the inside) and sunned spines. Volumes are near very good, with some light foxing. Volume two has an open nick and heavy bump to spine head. Otherwise, overall a tight and clean copy in slightly less than very good condition in a very good red slipcase. Official export certificate, dated 1976, laid-in. Provenance available upon request. Composed circa 1970s, with anti-communistic sentiments, this draft was mostly composed around the time Cleaver was returning from 7 years of self imposed exile as a fugitive as a result of jumping bail in 1968 when he was facing charges of attempted murder. His seven exiled years as a fugitive had Cleaver living in Algeria, Cuba and France, along with trips to North Vietnam, North Korea and the Soviet Union. Previously enamored with communist life and philosophy, Cleaver ultimately soured to it. Originally everywhere he went he was wined and dined by the Communists. However, while in these countries Cleaver began to see that they were not â€

Correspondance manuscrite complète d'Henry Miller avec Béatrice Commengé

S.n 1976 - - S.n, Pacific Palisades (CA) 1976-1978, 23 pages A4. One of the very few ''fanas'' to understand me. Merci ! Merci mille fois ! », écrit-il dès la seconde lettre. Une véritable amitié épistolaire se noue alors entre le vieil écrivain et la jeune muse : « I think of you as some sort of terrestrial angel » ; « what a delight to get a letter from you » ; « Keep writing me, please ! Refusant une correspondance purement universitaire, « To be honest with you, I don't think either A.N. or I, who are naturally very truthful persons, really succeeded with truth as it is conventionally thought of. We are both confirmed «fabulators». » Miller recommande à la jeune femme ses nouvelles lectures et ses vieux amis, « [Lawrence] Durrel is the friend to talk to about me, [.] he knows me inside out » ; [he] is wonderful when you get to know him. éblouissant même » ; « that great master of the french language - Joseph Delteil » ; « Delteil is almost a saint. But a lively one. » ; « Alf[red Perlès] is the clown, the buffoon, who made me laugh every day ». Puis il la félicite d'abandonner son projet didactique au profit d'un « imaginary book about me » et engage une correspondance bien plus intime. Il lui confie ainsi ses étonnements : « Did you read about the french prostitutes protesting and demonstrating in Paris against my receving [the legion of honor] ? They say I did not treat them well in my books. And I thougth I had ! ! ». Il partage ses gouts littéraires : « I prefer the Welsh. They are the last of the poets ». Il met également en garde la future traductrice d'Anais Nin, contre la dualité de son ancienne maîtresse: « She is or was a complete enigma, absolutely dual. [.] Actually, I suppose there is always this dichotomy between the person and the writer », lui confiant ses secrets : « she is slowly dyin (of cancer) she refuses to admit it. (This is entre nous !) » et révélant ses nouveaux amours : « I am in love with a very beautiful chinese actress [.]. I seem to go from one to another, never totally defeated, never wholly satisfied. But this is near ''eternal'' love as I've never been.
