Fire Flies: As Transmitted by William Larson

Philadelphia: Gravity Press, 1976. Tiny spot of water damage visible on bottom corner of first ten pages, else near fine in printed wrappers.. First Edition. Oblong quarto. SIGNED and INSCRIBED, "To Jeff from William Larson on 10/23/70 at 4:26 pm." Revelatory collection of digitally generated images created by William Larson between 1969-1976. Gitterman Gallery's 2015 retrospective of the series explained the process, "Larson used a Graphic Sciences DEX 1 Teleprinter, a sophisticated early fax machine, which converted pictures, text and sound into digitally-generated audio signals. These signals were transmitted over a telephone line and a stylus burned the image onto a special carbon-based paper, creating a unique 'electronic drawing.' He was able to manipulate these images by altering the voltage of the output during the printing process, by moving the stylus during printing and by sending multiple transmissions to the same page, electronically layering images, text and visual representations of sound." Important and underrated generative artist book.

        BRUTUS KILLED CAESAR

Akron: The Emily H. Davis Art Gallery of the University of Akron with the cooperation of the Sonnabend Gallery, New York and The Ohio State University, Columbus, 1976. First edition. Baldessari, John. 4 x 10 3/4 inches, (35) pp., photo-illustrated. Spiral bound printed wrappers. Fine, with just the slightest evidence of use along the top edge of the front wrapper at the spiral. John Baldessari, born National City, California, 17 June 1931, is well known for using disparate elements of everyday life in his photographically generated works of art. In this, one of his earliest printed artists' books, he juxtaposes three images in a linear format using two photographic portraits of a younger and older man facing each other with a photograph of a common household object between them. Each leaf repeats the same portraits but illustrates a different "murder weapon": a kitchen knife, a wooden board, a magnifying glass, a book of matches, pushpins, etc. Baldessari lives and works in Santa Monica, California.

        An account of my hut.

Pawlet, VT: The Banyan Press, 1976. 8vo (26.5 cm, 10.4"). [30] pp. One of the great classical Japanese essays: Kamo no Ch?mei's H?j?ki, translated into English by Donald Keene and here in an elegantly minimalist fine press limited edition from Claude Fredericks of the Banyan Press. Some describe the work as "the Walden Pond of medieval Japan." This is the => first book-form edition of the translation, following its original appearance in Keene's Anthology of Japanese Literature; three hundred copies were set by hand in Garamond and printed on Masa paper by Fredericks and David Beeken. Original hand-stitched wrappers resembling bamboo grain, with paper label on front wrapper, in paper overlay matching the endpapers; outer overlay with minor edge wear and with small annotation (possibly from publisher) on label. A lovely and uncommon production.

Mathis James "Jimmy" Reed (1925-1976) Important American Blues Musician and Songwriter, notable for bringing his distinctive style of blues to mainstream audiences. Reed is an archetype of the genre, born in the rural Mississippi Delta, he is considered one of the most influential blues musician of his era. He was posthumously inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1980, and into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991. Jimmy Reed's blues standards include "Ain't That Lovin' You Baby," "Big Boss Man," "Bright Lights Big City," "Honest I Do," and "Baby What You Want Me to Do." Reed placed 11 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 pop charts and a total of 14 on the R&B charts. Many of his songs have been covered by blues, rock and roll, and pop artists including the Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Buddy Guy, B.B. King, the Grateful Dead, the Yardbirds, Charlie Rich, Lou Rawls, Tom Petty, Hank Williams, Jr., and his unique sound directly influenced Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, the Animals, Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, the Eagles, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, Slim Harpo, and others. Reed's career was hampered by health and drinking problems. He died on August 29, 1976 in Oakland, California while on a West Coast comeback tour that included venues like the West Dakota Club in Berkeley, the Bodega in San Jose, and the Savoy Tivoli in San Francisco. He was only 50 years old, just one week before his 51 birthday. Berkeley's The West Dakota Club, 1505 San Pablo Avenue (former site of The New Orleans House) was a popular 1970's venue where iconic musicians such as Bo Didley, Steve Miller, Norton Buffalo, Roadhog, Boz Scaggs, John Cipolinna, Les Dudek, Joe Henderson, Queen Ida, Johnny Charles Burris, Charlie Musselwhite, Bonnie Raitt, and many others performed. Grayson Street, the opening act for Jimmy Reed, was a 1970's East Bay band fronted by blues saxophonist Terry Hanck. From the collection of the late Peter Howard, noted antiquarian book dealer, and owner of Serendipity Books, legendary Berkeley bookstore, now closed. Good .
