The Collected Essays of Sir Winston Churchill in four volumes

London: Library of Imperial History, 1976. First edition. Hardcover. This is a full, four volume set of the first and only edition of Churchill's Collected Essays. This is a clean, near-fine set. The bindings remain square and tight with sharp corners, and bright spine gilt. We note only a trivial scuff to the lower front hinge of Volume II and incidental shelf-wear to the cloth boards. The contents are immaculate – crisp and bright with no spotting and no previous ownership marks. The set feels unread. In 1976, the Library of Imperial History issued this set as a welcome follow-up to the Collected Works, which included only book-length publications. Both the content and aesthetics of this four-volume set are compelling, compiling most of Churchill's major forewords and periodical contributions, some of which can be otherwise found only in the original periodical publications. The essays are sorted by subject and each of the volumes has a theme - Churchill and War, Churchill and Politics, Churchill and People, and Churchill at Large. In addition to being bibliographically important, The Collected Essays are aesthetically appealing. The production quality is impressive. The text is printed on special 500-year archival paper and decorated with marbled endpapers, gilt top edge, and head and foot bands. There were two standard binding options for The Collected Essays - both sumptuous. The one offered here (the "Centenary Edition") is quarter blue morocco over blue cloth as opposed to the white vellum in which full sets of the Collected Works were typically bound. As a stand-alone set, the quarter blue morocco binding may be preferred. The binding is both more attractive and more durable than the white vellum, which can age poorly. In either binding, sets of the Collected Essays are desirable, both for content and shelf-presence. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A286, Woods/ICS A146(b), Langworth p.355

The Collected Essays of Sir Winston Churchill, complete in four volumes

London: Library of Imperial History, 1976. First edition. Hardcover. This pristine set of Churchill's Collected Essays is among the best-preserved examples of the vellum bindings we have seen. This four-volume set is a compilation of most of Churchill's major forewords and periodical contributions, some of which can be otherwise found only in the original periodical publications. The essays are sorted by subject and each of the volumes has a theme - Churchill and War, Churchill and Politics, Churchill and People, and Churchill at Large. In addition to being bibliographically important, The Collected Essays are aesthetically appealing. The production quality is impressive. There were two publisher binding options for The Collected Essays - both sumptuous and one positively extravagant. The lesser of the two was bound in quarter blue morocco and is lovely, but does not match the other 34 volumes of The Collected Works. The more elaborate binding option was full natural calfskin vellum with individual green slipcases, matching the 34 volumes of the preceding Centenary Edition of Churchill's book-length works. The bindings feature Churchill's coat of arms stamped in gilt. The text is printed on special 500-year archival paper and decorated with marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, head and foot bands, and silk ribbon markers. Each volume is protected in a dark green leather slipcase with the Churchill coat of arms embossed in gilt on the front cover. Either binding of The Collected Essays is scarce, but this more elaborate binding is rarely seen alone, as it is essential to completing a uniform full set of The Collected Works. The vellum bindings were meant to tone and age naturally, but often yellow both considerably and unevenly. We are seldom able to offer a set this compellingly bright and clean. This set is one of three acquired by us from a venerable London bookseller, who acquired the sets new from the publisher and stored them in a cupboard until they were recently made available to us. The bindings are pristine, showing no discernible signs of handling, perfectly square and tight with sharp corners and no visible wear. Shelf presentation is superlative, the spines improbably bright and clean. The contents are likewise immaculate, crisp and bright, with satin ribbon markers still in the original position placed by the publisher. We find no previous ownership marks. The gilt page edges are vividly bright with no discernible flaws noted. The books are clearly unread and we may well be the first to have ever removed them from the slipcases. In short, the set appears flawless. The publisher's green leather slipcases are likewise virtually flawless. An exceptional example of an important work, with both compelling contents and striking shelf presence. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A286, Woods/ICS A146(b), Langworth p.355.

West Point, N. Y. : United States Military Academy,. 1976. Paperback. 1st Edition. Original Paper Wrappers. 8vo. 8 pages ; 23 cm. In English. From the 3rd Annual Sol Feinstone Memorial Lecture series at West Point. This lecture given by Pulitzer Prize winning Jewish novelist and writer Herman Wouk. Wouk served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater of WWII. He addresses the west point graduates about The Meaning of Freedom, concluding, “In the last five years, working on ‘The Winds of War…' I've spoken three times: to the Naval Academy, to the Naval War caollege, and now to the United States Military Academy. It isn't because I'm a militarist. I'm not intrigued… by the romance of war. Let me make this plain to you. In my view war is a massive criminal absurdity… I believe, heart and soul, that in days to come it will fade from the minds of men and nations as a possible way to behave. That is what I'm trying to say in my books. ” This cannot have been well-received at West Point, and certainly would not have been a speech it would have wanted to promote or make readily available outside the academy. OCLC lists only one copy worldwide (Westpoint! ) Ex-library with Jewish institutional stamp and usual markings. In very good condition. Rare. (SPEC-42-20) .

        Street Merchants in Saint Petersburg].

Maison de l'Eglise St. Pierre St. Petersburg third quarter of the 19th c. - Collection of 22 (possibly out of 24) hand-coloured lithographs, printed on thick paper, captioned in Russian and French. Dimensions: 12 x 8.8 cm. Scarce set of charming hand-coloured lithographs showing various street merchants rarely included in other similar works. Our set has a number of dissimilarities compared with the one in the collection of Gubar and in the depositories of Harvard University library: lithographed cards from our collection are unnumbered and have coloured backgrounds; some figures and captions have minor discrepancies, others feature different street merchants, not present in the Gubar's and Harvard's sets. Rare: not in the usual bibliographies, in particular not in Hilers' compilation nor Thieme-Becker, and apparently no copy in the UK, the Library of Congress and the NYPL. Cf.       [Northampton, Mass.]: The Gehenna Press, 1976. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Baskin, Leonard. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. 42 p. Inscribed by Author(s). Leonard Baskin (1922-2000) was an artistic genius whose works almost defy categorization. Eminent in sculpting, illustration, printmaking and also as a typographer and printer, he pursued multiple art forms all of which have, as an underlying thread, social consciousness and a high regard for humanity (N.B., above information from the website of the Galerie St. Etienne). Mr. Baskin founded The Gehenna Press in 1942 while at Yale University, taking his inspiration from William Blake's example as both a poet and an artist/bookmaker. This book, published by the Gehenna Press in 1976, contains 19 drawings by Baskin of various mythological and frightening humans and beasts, and features an ORIGINAL PENCIL SKETCH of the head and upper body of a skeleton, signed by him and dated 1992; on the facing page he inscribed the work: "for ----- from Leonard Baskin". ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in marbled paper boards, black leather spine label with gilt lettering, plain endpapers, blue paper title page printed in red and black, the original pencil sketch on the recto of the flyleaf prior to the title page with the inscription facing, the sole text in the book following the title page comprised of a quote from St. Bernard of Clairvaux, the book was printed by Harold McGrath in the autumn of 1976 "on various interesting papers" (per the book's colophon). The printed illustrations are indeed on various papers both in type and colour, one printed in red and black and the rest printed all in black. Quarto size (approximately 11.25" tall), unpaginated with 20 printed leaves (all type and illustrations on rectos only), limited edition of 450 copies, this no. 107, SIGNED BY BASKIN on the colophon page in addition to the personal inscription at the front, prior bookseller ticket at the bottom of the rear pastedown. ***CONDITION: Overall near fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, straight corners with a minimum of rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and other than Mr. Baskin's sketch and inscription it is entirely free of prior owner markings; there is some light overall edgewear, else fine. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Cloth-backed boards.Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the front free endpaper: ''November 12, 1976 - Decca, lovely, talented, dedicated friend and colleague - who has helped me to sweat this book through - the family of Kunta Kinte wishes the very warmest best to you and Bob and your family.. With brotherly love! Alex Haley''. The recipient is Jessica Mitford, writer, academic, activist and, of course, one of the Mitford sisters. ''Bob'' is the civil rights lawyer Robert Neuhaft with whom she had two sons. Mitford was closely involved in the civil rights movement of the sixties, which is presumably when she met Alex Haley. Maya Angelou was another of her close friends. Interestingly enough, J.K. Rowling states that Mitford had the most influence on her writing, so much so that she named one her children Jessica.Tail of spine slightly bumped. The film was set in Brooklyn and was entirely shot there on location. Travolta was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor.
