      Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc, 1976. First edition, later printing of Haley's classic work. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by Alex Haley to actor Richard Pryor on the front free endpaper, "April 30, 1977 For Richard Pryor, my brother and a beautiful human being - The warmest of wishes to you and your family from the entire family at Kunta Kinte! Brotherly love! Alex Haley." Richard Pryor was a comedian, actor, and social critic. Pryor was known for uncompromising examinations of racism and topical contemporary issues, which employed colorful vulgarities and profanity, as well as racial epithets. He reached a broad audience with his trenchant observations and storytelling style. He is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential stand-up comedians of all time: Jerry Seinfeld called Pryor "The Picasso of our profession"and Bob Newhart heralded Pryor as "the seminal comedian of the last 50 years". Dave Chappelle said of Pryor, "You know those, like, evolution charts of man? He was the dude walking upright. Richard was the highest evolution of comedy." An excellent association copy. Fine in a very good dust jacket with a few small closed tears. Jacket design by Al Nagy. Published in October 1976 amid significant advance expectations, Roots was immediately successful, garnering a slew of positive reviews and debuting at #5 of The New York Times Best Seller list. By mid-November, it had risen to the #1 spot on the list. The television adaptation of the book aired in January 1977 and within seven months of its release, Roots had sold over 1.5 million copies. In total, Roots spent 22 weeks at the #1 spot on The Times' list, including each of the first 18 weeks of 1977. Ultimately, it was on the list for a total 46 weeks. Together, the success of the novel and its 1977 television adaptation, sparked an explosion of interest in the fields of genealogy and researching family histories. Haley earned a Pulitzer Prize special award in 1977 for Roots. The television miniseries garnered many awards, including nine Emmys and a Peabody. It was remade again in 2016 starring Malachi Kirby, Forest Whitaker, Anna Paquin, Laurence Fishburne and Jonathan Rhys Meyers.

        2=1, 2; 1+1,2; e.t.c.

      Self-published., Hamburg. 1976 - ArtistÕs book, printed by Sost & Co. Hanne Darboven consistently worked on a system that refers to time, and developed and reproduced arithmetical programmes that she invented as permutations of the Gregorian calendar; when added together, they form a precise date. The enigmatic formula of the title of this book is one that appears frequently in DarbovenÕs oeuvre, occasionally being used as her artist stamp. It combines a sense of representing time through both progression and end, and also the idea of a repeating sequence. The numerical title is here placed within a circular stamp on the cover. This copy inscribed in black pen by Darboven on the front cover of the book in 1994: Ò30.6.94 am burgberg heute - today lieber thomas beginn hier der Schreibzeit liebes deine hanne + mickyÓ. In addition, this copy also includes a typical three-part letter by Darboven, handwritten in red ink on three pages of transparent paper, and inserted loose into the book. The letter is also dated 30.6.94 and relates to Darboven 1990s opus ÔKinder dieser WeltÕ, with each sheet signed by Darboven and Micky. Micky was the name of DarbovenÕs pet goat - each of the three sheets also have a screenprinted design, and the second of these appears to show a photographic image of a young girl riding in a cart pulled by a goat. [Ref: Elke Bippus & Ortrud Westheider, Hanne Darboven: Kommentiertes Werkverzeichnis der BŸcher, no. 18]. Pages printed single-sided only, with the artistÕs fluid style of ÒSchreibzeitÓ or Òtime writingÓ. Original cream wrappers, with title stamped on front cover. DarbovenÕs address and telephone number printed within a similar circular stamp on the back cover. Gummed binding with cloth tape spine. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Von dem greüwlichen Laster der Trunckenhayt ...[Augsburg, Heinrich Steiner, 1533?]. 4to. With large and unusually detailed woodcut (10 x 12 cm) on title-page showing an elaborate banquet and a vomitting man, by H. Weiditz (the Petrarca master), decorated woodcut initials. Set in schwabacher types with incidental fraktur. Early 19th-century shell-marbled boards.

      Goedeke II, 10,6; Hayn Gotendorf II, 357; Kaczerowsky, Sebastian Franck Bibliographie (1976), A 4 (5 copies); VD16 F2142 (2 copies). One of at least three and possibly five editions that VD16 lists under 1533 of "On the horrible vice of drunkenness", a treatise on the excesses of eating and drinking and the abuse and use of wine and other alcoholic beverages, probably first published in 1531. Kaczerowsky and others regard the present edition as the first, published in 1528. It is also of medical interest, since Franck discusses several illnesses of the body and mind, real or imagined, that are caused by drunkenness. He attributed a variety of social ills to alcohol, including blasphemy, idolatry, theft, murder and even the German Peasant War of 1525. All of his works were placed on the index of prohibited books in 1559.Most of the editions with the 1531 date have 32 leaves, expanded to 38 leaves in one with the 1531 date and those with the 1533 date. Since the present edition also has 38 leaves, it seems likely to have been printed in 1533. With 5 pages of bibliographical notes in German on 3 leaves inserted before the title-page, the first 2, dated 1857, signed by the owner Friedrich Latendorf (1831-1898), who later edited Sebastian Franck's erste namenlose Sprichwörtersammlung vom Jahre 1532 in getreuen Abdruck, 1876. They discuss the dates and order of the first editions and issues. With the inserted leaves crudely attached to the title-page with tape in the gutter margin, but otherwise in very good condition, with only some minor foxing.

      Large unpag. artist's book from the visual and lexical poet, book artist, and mail artist, composed of pages of Young's poetry volumes and other assorted poetry double-printed or overlaid with rubber-stamping, illustrations, and typescript, with handwritten and dated inscription to fellow poet and performance artist Jackson MacLow on inside front cover which reads "For Jackson, all thanks & respect. Karl Young worked in the areas of lexical poetry, visual poetry, book art, and mail art, and has written extensively on these forms of media. He also serves as a co-editor of the online version of Kaldron, North America's longest running visual poetry magazine. The cover and title page of his compilation reads as follows: "A Book of Hours; A Day Book; A Log Book; A Thesaurus; A Workbook; A Catalogue; A Psalter; A Book of Prophecies; A Book of Katuns; A Codex; A Book of Etiquette; A Primer; A Palimpsest; A Diary; A Cumulative Record; A Tonalamatl; A Hymnal; A Scrapbook; A Dictionary; An Index; A Sketchbook; A Code Book; A Missal; A Notebook; A Guidebook; An Illuminated Book; A Pattern Book; A Pillow Book; An Album; A Cipher; A Crib; A Testament."       San Francisco: Cloud House, [n.d. but ca.1976]. First Printing of this edition. 12mo. (14.25cm); illustrated card wrappers, saddle-stitched; [8]pp; illus. Some toning along spine-fold, else Near Fine. Elusive chapbook reproducing Kerouac's 30 "essentials" regarding his Spontaneous Prose method, which were first published in the Spring, 1959 issue of Evergreen Review (Charters C44). Produced by The Cloud House, a live-work space for poets in San Francisco's Mission District, run by Steven "Kush" Kushner and his wife Hedy. Though the list made two additional appearances in print after Evergreen Review (A Casebook on the Beat, 1961; New American Story, 1965), the Cloud House imprint marks the probable first separate edition, likely published around the time of the identically-titled broadside printed by the Phoenix Book Shop for Santa Cruz High School (1976). A key work by the Beat Generation author, ranking with Ginsberg's improvised poetics, Burroughs's cut-up method, Corso's automaticism, McClure's beast language, and Ferlinghetti's voice of the fourth person singular. Scarce; OCLC finds 3 copies only (Morgan Lib., UC Berkeley, UVA). Not in Charters.

        Time Given. Poems, 1970-1976

      Deakin, Brindabella Press, 1976. Octavo, 42 pages. Cloth with the two-colour paper title-label mounted on the front cover; a fine copy with the slightly scuffed and marked original clear acetate dustwrapper. The fourth book of the Brindabella Press, and the rarest. Although the print run was standard for this private press - in this instance, 230 copies were printed (this is number 121) - apparently many were not distributed because the printer-publisher, Alec Bolton, was dissatisfied with the quality of the edition. We have previously sold a copy of this book containing a lengthy typed letter signed to Aubrey [Cousins], a colleague from Bolton's Angus and Robertson days. The letter, dated 30 April 1976, stated 'There are a couple of projects in view for the next book ... I think the McAuley might come first, if he decides to let me do the book. I believe he may not be in very good shape, as he recently had a (second) cancer operation. He has been a friend of ours for years'. The book was finished two months after James McAuley died in October 1976, shortly after his 59th birthday.

      Cloud House [n.d. but ca.1976], San Francisco - First Printing of this edition.

        Fumble University

      1976-1978. Wood . Very Good. Colorful, fun, psychedelic cartoonish manuscript spoof of dysfunctional "Fumble-U", "the inside-out University Where You DIscover Everything Backwards." Very large format, with a custom heavy wood album containing seventeen original works of pop art pertaining to this mythical university. The album cover itself measures 53 by 37 cm, and the artwork, including their brightly colored framing bands, are 45.5 by 35.5 cm. The artwork is rendered in pen and ink, oil on board, acrylic, etc. The paintings are mounted on board and usually covered with plastic. The wooden album which contains the panels is itself a work of art by the artist, with its deeply chiseled shapes and painted representations of a woods, ballooning letters for the title, etc. This sets the tone for the graphics within, which include the text, is very much in keeping with the loose, flowing, wavy, goofy, anarchic and modish style that floweredi n the late 1960s. One can easily imagine the author ideating and executing much of this while on a hallucinogen, and certainly that is the impression he was seeking to leave. The second panel is one that is primarily text -- a letter to parents from Dr. Fumble -- and its gobblegygook parody brings to mind the bombast of administration in "Animal House". By the next two panels we know that we are in the presence of stoners and our trip to this university is like a magic carpet ride at the dawing of the "Age of Aquarius". Here jump out neon reds, yellows, blues as representations of the planets in the heavens, and evoked is the artwork of a "groovy" sci-fi paperback. This work is not a narrative per se, and so some of the panels following are outlandish representations of people like those in the Simpsons. Tying together everything, though, is a sensibility, and it is all of one piece. Housed in a wooden album with the upper cover carved and painted by the artist. We have to believe that Hemstreet was hoping to have this published. And certainly its quality is on the level of some highly regarded 'zines which have in more recent times excited hipsters.

        Triumph of the Will. Illustrated by Arthur Thrall and Walter Hamady

      The Perishable Press, Mt. Horeb, WI 1976 - Unique copy with one-of-a-kind full blue-gray morocco designer binding by Samuel Feinstein, the book one of 150 copies on Frankfurt & Frankfurt Cream paper, signed by the author, Armand Schwerner, on the penultimate page. Page size: 8 x 7.5 inches and 5-3/4 x 7-1/4 inches; 24pp, 12 of which printed. Bound by Samuel Feinstein: full blue-gray morocco over boards with 22K "moon" gold tooling and onlays of red and yellow, with title on front panel and author's name on back panel, both panels with variations of the musical triangles created by Arthur Thrall for Hamady's use, spine gilt tooled with musical staves and notes bridging the designs on each panel. The triangles are gilt tooled with musical notations and 5-line staffs on either the blue/gray morocco or maroon onlays, gilt-tooling over gold morocco triangles at right angles to top and bottom of large triangles, repeating the triangles within triangles theme. Turn-ins with gilt-tooled squares (notes); sewn on tabs to ensure book opens flat, original wrappers of blue-gray French marbled paper, with diel-cut profile emerging from the front center in a swirling sea of pattern and color; signed at rear tail turn-in, in gold gilt, "Samuel Feinstein" housed in grey cloth over boards with Ultrasuede lining. Laid in is original publication announcement from the Perishable Press featuring another reincarnation of Arthur Thrall's intriguing musical triangles. Printed in Sabon-Antiqua in blues, greens, reds, blind and brown on/into alternating papers. Hamady notes in his PP Bibliography that Arthur Thrall allowed free reign with his intaglio of triangular invention and that allowed a lot of playing with press, color & spatial locations. Consequently, triangles sit atop triangles, sit next to one another or next to one another, pyramid-like, all with the suggestion of notes and musical staff swirling in the confined space. Armand Schwerner (1927-1999) Belgian-born avant-garde Jewish-American poet taught at New York City area universities. PP #77. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
