San Francisco: Cloud House, [n.d. but ca.1976]. First Printing of this edition. 12mo. (14.25cm); illustrated card wrappers, saddle-stitched; [8]pp; illus. Some toning along spine-fold, else Near Fine. Elusive chapbook reproducing Kerouac's 30 "essentials" regarding his Spontaneous Prose method, which were first published in the Spring, 1959 issue of Evergreen Review (Charters C44). Produced by The Cloud House, a live-work space for poets in San Francisco's Mission District, run by Steven "Kush" Kushner and his wife Hedy. Though the list made two additional appearances in print after Evergreen Review (A Casebook on the Beat, 1961; New American Story, 1965), the Cloud House imprint marks the probable first separate edition, likely published around the time of the identically-titled broadside printed by the Phoenix Book Shop for Santa Cruz High School (1976). A key work by the Beat Generation author, ranking with Ginsberg's improvised poetics, Burroughs's cut-up method, Corso's automaticism, McClure's beast language, and Ferlinghetti's voice of the fourth person singular. Scarce; OCLC finds 3 copies only (Morgan Lib., UC Berkeley, UVA). Not in Charters.

        Time Given. Poems, 1970-1976

Deakin, Brindabella Press, 1976. Octavo, 42 pages. Cloth with the two-colour paper title-label mounted on the front cover; a fine copy with the slightly scuffed and marked original clear acetate dustwrapper. The fourth book of the Brindabella Press, and the rarest. Although the print run was standard for this private press - in this instance, 230 copies were printed (this is number 121) - apparently many were not distributed because the printer-publisher, Alec Bolton, was dissatisfied with the quality of the edition. We have previously sold a copy of this book containing a lengthy typed letter signed to Aubrey [Cousins], a colleague from Bolton's Angus and Robertson days. The letter, dated 30 April 1976, stated 'There are a couple of projects in view for the next book ... I think the McAuley might come first, if he decides to let me do the book. I believe he may not be in very good shape, as he recently had a (second) cancer operation. He has been a friend of ours for years'. The book was finished two months after James McAuley died in October 1976, shortly after his 59th birthday.

        Fumble University

1976-1978. Wood . Very Good. Colorful, fun, psychedelic cartoonish manuscript spoof of dysfunctional "Fumble-U", "the inside-out University Where You DIscover Everything Backwards." Very large format, with a custom heavy wood album containing seventeen original works of pop art pertaining to this mythical university. The album cover itself measures 53 by 37 cm, and the artwork, including their brightly colored framing bands, are 45.5 by 35.5 cm. The artwork is rendered in pen and ink, oil on board, acrylic, etc. The paintings are mounted on board and usually covered with plastic. The wooden album which contains the panels is itself a work of art by the artist, with its deeply chiseled shapes and painted representations of a woods, ballooning letters for the title, etc. This sets the tone for the graphics within, which include the text, is very much in keeping with the loose, flowing, wavy, goofy, anarchic and modish style that floweredi n the late 1960s. One can easily imagine the author ideating and executing much of this while on a hallucinogen, and certainly that is the impression he was seeking to leave. The second panel is one that is primarily text -- a letter to parents from Dr. Fumble -- and its gobblegygook parody brings to mind the bombast of administration in "Animal House". By the next two panels we know that we are in the presence of stoners and our trip to this university is like a magic carpet ride at the dawing of the "Age of Aquarius". Here jump out neon reds, yellows, blues as representations of the planets in the heavens, and evoked is the artwork of a "groovy" sci-fi paperback. This work is not a narrative per se, and so some of the panels following are outlandish representations of people like those in the Simpsons. Tying together everything, though, is a sensibility, and it is all of one piece. Housed in a wooden album with the upper cover carved and painted by the artist. We have to believe that Hemstreet was hoping to have this published. And certainly its quality is on the level of some highly regarded 'zines which have in more recent times excited hipsters.

Triumph of the Will. Illustrated by Arthur Thrall and Walter Hamady

Mt. Horeb, WI: The Perishable Press, 1976. Unique copy with one-of-a-kind full blue-gray morocco designer binding by Samuel Feinstein, the book one of 150 copies on Frankfurt & Frankfurt Cream paper, signed by the author, Armand Schwerner, on the penultimate page. Page size: 8 x 7.5 inches and 5-3/4 x 7-1/4 inches; 24pp, 12 of which printed. Bound by Samuel Feinstein: full blue-gray morocco over boards with 22K "moon" gold tooling and onlays of red and yellow, with title on front panel and author's name on back panel, both panels with variations of the musical triangles created by Arthur Thrall for Hamady's use, spine gilt tooled with musical staves and notes bridging the designs on each panel. The triangles are gilt tooled with musical notations and 5-line staffs on either the blue/gray morocco or maroon onlays, gilt-tooling over gold morocco triangles at right angles to top and bottom of large triangles, repeating the triangles within triangles theme. Turn-ins with gilt-tooled squares (notes); sewn on tabs to ensure book opens flat, original wrappers of blue-gray French marbled paper, with diel-cut profile emerging from the front center in a swirling sea of pattern and color; signed at rear tail turn-in, in gold gilt, "Samuel Feinstein" housed in grey cloth over boards with Ultrasuede lining. Laid in is original publication announcement from the Perishable Press featuring another reincarnation of Arthur Thrall's intriguing musical triangles. Printed in Sabon-Antiqua in blues, greens, reds, blind and brown on/into alternating papers. Hamady notes in his PP Bibliography that Arthur Thrall allowed free reign with his intaglio of triangular invention and that allowed a lot of playing with press, color & spatial locations. Consequently, triangles sit atop triangles, sit next to one another or next to one another, pyramid-like, all with the suggestion of notes and musical staff swirling in the confined space. Armand Schwerner (1927-1999) Belgian-born avant-garde Jewish-American poet taught at New York City area universities. PP #77.

        1976 Star Trek Convention Photographs

1976 - A collection of more than 150 amateur photographs from the 1976 Oakland, California Star Trek Convention featuring the cast of the original show and various attendees. Overall fine with only a bit of fading to some of the color images but most are fresh and new. The photographs feature William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForrest Kelley, Nichelle Nichols, George Takai, Walter Koenig, James Doohan, as well other actors from the series decked out in their 1970s best, speaking on stage or signing autographs. Just over 20 of the photos depict convention-goers hanging out, traveling to the show, dressed in Star Trek costumes, posing with actors, and mugging for the camera. The convention snaps are accompanied by another 400 amateur (and a few professional) photographs of television broadcasts of the show and various Star Trek stars' on-air appearances ($25,000 Pyramid, Hollywood Squares). In the days before VCRs, taking photographs of the TV was one of the only ways to capture images from a show. Most of the images appear fuzzy but still retain a crude charm, particularly images of the little-seen 1975 TV special, The Star Trek Dream.A wonderful group of photographs that capture Star Trek at the height of its cult status in the years after its cancellation but before the first Star Wars and Star Trek movies brought science fiction into the mainstream.

        Signed photograph.

Walkerprints 1976. Black and white promotional photograph, 285 x 235 mm, signed by Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor in blue biro. This rare photograph dates from the period when Queen were riding the crest of international success. 1974 saw the release of their breakthrough album Sheer Heart Attack, which included the hit "Killer Queen", and in 1975 they had produced their magnum opus A Night At The Opera, which spawned their greatest success "Bohemian Rhapsody". 1976 saw them touring and releasing A Day At The Races, which cemented their hold on the charts. This photograph shows the band on top of the world; the glint in Freddie's eye suggests that he's comfortable there.
