EX LIBRIS: A SIGNIFICANT REFERENCE COLLECTION OF FORTY-TWO CATALOGUES

Cohen, Arthur A.. EX LIBRIS: A SIGNIFICANT REFERENCE COLLECTION OF FORTY-TWO CATALOGUES. New York. 1976-1985.: Ex Libris, First Editions. 8vo. Illustrated Wrappers. Bookseller's Catalogues. Very Good - or Better. np, most profusely illustrated in b&w. New York's Arthur Cohen was the premier purveyor of books and ephemera on twentieth century Modern Art movements for nearly twenty years. Ex Libris' copiously researched, scholarly, illustrated catalogues stood as unparalleled bibliographic tools at a time when there was a paucity of available reference to the documentary literature of the modernist avant-gardes. We are offering a significant collection of forty-two Ex Libris publications including a near-complete run of numbered catalogues comprising: 1 (THE MAJOR MOVEMENTS OF 20TH CENTURY ART), 3 (APOLLINAIRE TO SURREALISM), 4 (OMNIUM GATHERUM), 5 (MAJOR MOVEMENTS OF 20TH CENTURY ART II), 6 (CONSTRUCTIVISM & FUTURISM: RUSSIAN & OTHER), 7 (MAJOR MOVEMENTS OF 20TH CENTURY ART III), 8 (BAUHAUS), 9 (FUTURISM), 10 (DADA ONCE AND FOR ALL), 11 (TENTH ANTIQUARIAN BOOK FAIR), 11 (whose numbering was accidentally duplicated - this is actually 12: BAUHAUS), 13 (LISSITZKY / SCHWITTERS / TSCHICHOLD / WERKMAN / ZWART), 14 (FUTURISM: ITALIAN & RUSSIAN), and 15 (DADA & SURREALISM) along with twenty-eight of the 9 x 4" staple-bound unnumbered and undated Ex Libris offering catalogues: ALL ERNST, APOLLINAIRE / FIRST EDITIONS / FRENCH AVANT-GARDE, ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN, ARTIST'S LETTERS / AUTOGRAPHS / POSTCARDS, THE AVANT-GARDE IN PRINT PROSPECTUS, BAUHAUS, BRETON / DUCHAMP / ERNST, CATALOGUE OF CATALOGUES, DADA AGAIN, DADA NOW AND 4EVER, FUTURISM, GEORGE GROSZ AND GERMAN EXPRESSIONISM, ILLUSTRATED BOOKS OF THE 20TH CENTURY, LISSITZKY / MAIAKOVSKII, MY HEART BELONGS TO DADA, PERIODICALS, PERIODICALS 2, RARAE AVES, RARAE AVES 2, RARAE AVES 4, RARE PERIODICALS: ART & LITERATURE, RUSSIAN AVANT-GARDE RARITIES, RUSSIAN RARITIES, SECESSION / JUGENSTIL / ART NOUVEAU / ART DECO, SELECTED PERIODICALS, 60 RARE PERIODICALS, THE SURREALIST REALM, AND VICTORY OVER THE SUN. It is with one exception a most handsome group of these uncommon documents allowing for the occasional light wear or soiling, speckled top edge of the textblock, or minor annotation here or there. Only catalogue number 6 (CONSTRUCTIVISM...) shows significant condition issues with heavy wear and slight chipping to the covers, a dent to the top of the spine, and curling of the foredge corners of the textblock. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. Baldessari, John. 4 x 10 3/4 inches, (35) pp., photo-illustrated. Spiral bound printed wrappers. Fine. John Baldessari, born National City, California, 17 June 1931, is well known for using disparate elements of everyday life in his photographically generated works of art. In this, one of his earliest printed artist's books he juxtaposes three images in a linear format using two photographic portraits of a younger and older man facing each other with a photograph of a common household object between them. Each leaf repeats the same portraits but illustrated a different "murder weapon"; a kitchen knife, a wooden board, a magnifying glass, a book of matches, pushpins, etc. Baldessari lives and works in Santa Monica, California.

(Figurines) L'chaim to the Battle of Concord

Chicago: Mogen David Wine Corporation, 1976. Very Good. (AMERICAN JUDAICA/REVOLUTIONARY WAR) Six porcelain bottle/figures representing The Battle of Concord on April 19th, 1776 (sic 1775). Commemoratives created by Mogen David, producers of Kosher Concord grape wine. Five standing Minutemen bottles and a cannon bottle housed in a red, velvet lined dark wooden box. Expert repair to one figure. Very Good Condition. Late 20th century. & & During the American War of Independence (1775-83), a considerable number of Jews volunteered for the colonialist armies and several acquired distinction, among them Isaac Franks, David Salisbury, Lewis Franks Bush, and Solomon Bush. In this war, some U.S. companies included quite a number of Jewish soldiers, such as that commanded by Major Benjamin Nones (d. 1826), a French Jew who served under the command of Lafayette and George Washington.& & A small golden label on the verso of each bottle reads “`Fire, fellow soldiers, for god’s sake fire!’ At Major Buttrick’s shout, his neighbors obey and two of the King’s troops fall dead. . Advancing across the North Bridge, the Minutemen drove their panic-stricken enemies back into Concord.” The affixed label on the front reads “Mogen David Concord Wine.”& & On the evening of April 18th, 1775, the British military governor of Massachusetts sent out from Boston a detachment of about 700 regular troops to destroy military stores collected by the provincials at Concord. Detecting the plan, the Whigs in Boston sent out Paul Revere and William Dawes with warnings. After the initial skirmish in Lexington, the British moved on to Concord, where they were shockingly routed by the dogged and brave American Minutemen. The casualties of the day bear no relation to its importance. Forty-nine Americans were killed, 73 British, but the fighting proved to the Americans that by their own methods they could defeat the British. In that belief, they stopped, before night, the land approaches to Boston, thus beginning the siege of Boston.& & These commemoratives are an amusing combination playing on the duality of Concord war battles and Concord wine bottles and were most probably produced for the celebration of America’s Bicentennial celebration in 1976. It’s a safe guess to suppose that wine from Concord grapes is probably what our colonial forebears were drinking at that time, especially since it was the season of Passover.& & This is an upbeat, worthy collectible combining both Americana and Judaica.&

More Tales of the Black Widowers

Garden City, NY: Doubleday, 1976. First Edition. Hardcover Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Asimov's second collection of short mystery stories, set during the luncheon meetings of the Black Widowers, a private social club. Nine of the dozen stories first appeared in magazines, the other three see print here for the first time. Asimov loved the mystery genre and wrote a number of them, but without the success afforded his science fiction. As a result, collectable copies of his Black Widowers collections are among the scarcest of his 1970s books. First edition (first printing). A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. A significant association copy, inscribed by Asimov 'To George Scithers and the great task now well begun. Isaac Asimov, 17 Dec 76.' The inscription almost certainly refers to the publication of the first issue of Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine. 'The first and founding editor [of IASFM] was George Scithers, an important science fiction fan and amateur publisher, who had run the Washington convention in 1963, at which I had received my first Hugo. He established the magazine as a viable entity from the start... —I. Asimov, p. 426. It's not surprising that Asimov gave Scithers this book. The publisher of IASFM, Joel Davis, convinced Asimov to write a series of Black Widower stories for another of his magazines, Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine. This book comes from a large collection of Isaac Asimov first editions, including many signed and especially fine copies.

JOE DALLESANDRO: NUDE BLACK-AND-WHITE PHOTOGRAPH BY BRUCE OF LOS ANGELES

Los Angeles, CA: Bruce Of Los Angeles. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/No Dust Jacket, As Issued.. Los Angeles, CA: Bruce Of Los Angeles, . Hardcover. Fine/None, As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 1 pages. Rare Joe Dallesandro collectible item. A vintage original silver-gelatin print of the young model/actor, as photographed by Bruce of Los Angeles. The print measures 8 X 10 inches and is encased in two protective sheets: A glassine photographic sleeve which is placed inside an oversize thick plastic cover. It shows Dallesandro at the peak of his beauty: Extremely handsome and sexily buffed, in a full-frontal pose. He is shown holding and looking pensively at his fully erect penis, from a revealing profile angle. The image anticipates by about three decades Peter Hujar&#39;s most celebrated and beautiful nude, "Bruce de Saint Croix, 1976". This is not a digital print or a later, contemporary print but was printed directly from the original negative during Bruce of LA&#39;s lifetime. It is very beautifully developed, with great clarity and subtle contrasts, on Double-Weight Fiber photographic paper, the paper Bruce of LA used in his last years. "Coupled with the fact that it is unstamped but retains its white borders, it dates back to Bruce&#39;s lifetime rather than the later Kensington Road-era. Because this is one of the more erotic poses from Bruce&#39;s single session with Joe Dallesandro, it is a rare print in this large size and format" (Reed Massengill). Joe Dallesandro remains the cult icon/figure of Warhol&#39;s ground-breaking underground films, whose aesthetics and style anticipate by almost fifty years the deliberately crude and gritty sex films that appear routinely online today. Before he was discovered and turned into his very own superstar by Warhol, Joe Dallesandro was the muse of the great male-nude photographers. But it was Bruce of Los Angeles who was the very first to photograph him, in exactly one session. Warhol avidly collected all of the so-called "physique magazines". After his Warhol breakthrough, Dallesandro was photographed by Duane Michals, Jack Mitchell, Francesco Scavullo, and Richard Avedon, among many other mainstream photographers. The Avedon prints are proudly displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This is the genuine article, a "must-have" collectible for Joe Dallesandro and male erotic art photography collectors. <b><i> This is an original vintage silver-gelatin print, and it is very boldly and beautifully signed and inscribed in metallic-silver marker in front by the model/actor: "Dream on XXX Joe Dallesandro". The three X&#39;s stand for "love", of course, and is quite special as such. The recipient, Reed Massengill, is the leading authority on male erotic photography in America. According to Massengill, Dallesandro told him that he does not sign his "fully-erect" poses, making an exception in the case of a few of Massengill&#39;s print copies. This is the only such signed and inscribed copy of the print available online, is eminently suitable for framing, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a museum-quality, collector&#39;s copy. A collection of Dallesandro memorabilia (publicity stills, magazine covers, film outtakes; not one of them is an original print or signed) available online commands more than a staggering $7500. A rare, one-of-a-kind signed copy thus. </b></i> One of the iconic American model/actors of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy.
