        Original painting of Corto Maltese

1976. Non-Book. Ink, watercolor and pastels on a roughly cut sheet of parchment paper. Comes with a letter by a former director of Lucca Comics, in which he explains that the piece was painted by Pratt during a dinner in 1976. The work measures approximately 21 x 29 cm. The paper, which was not ideal for watercolors, is creased and the lines and colors appear much thicker than Pratt's usual hand. The director mentions that Pratt reluctantly obliged because he did not think the paper was right but that, in the end, he considered the result to be innovative. .

The Acts of King Arthur And His Noble Knights.

NY, Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1976 - NY, Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1976, first edition, wrappers. Softcover. Advance copy, an uncorrected proof, edited by Chase Horton, these tales are Steinbeck's attempt to render Malory "into modern English," the importance to Steinbeck and his literature of the Morte d'Arthur cannot be over-stated, as he writes in his introduction, "I think my sense of right and wrong.and any thought I may have had against the oppressor and for the oppressed, came from this book," this copy is especially important because it was one of two copies sent to novelist John Gardner, author of such novels as Grendel and The Resurrection, Gardner also wrote The Complete Works of the Gawain Poet, The Alliterative Morte Arthure, and other "olde English" books, this copy includes Gardner's pencil marks, underlining, and bracketting of sections as well as a list on the front cover of possible places of publication for blurbs and/or reviews, this was originally obtained from Susan Thornton who was Gardner's fiance at the time of his death, Morrow 284.         Taxi Driver Typescript

[NY]: [Bantam]. [1976]. Partial typescript for Elman's novelization of the Paul Schrader screenplay for the classic Martin Scorcese film, ranked 52nd on the American Film Institute's top films of all time. Approximately 75 typescript pages total, about evenly split between multiple reworkings of the first eight pages and the final 13 pages, with five drafts of the first page alone. Approximately nine pages from the middle of the book. Most pages are ribbon-copy; some are carbon typescript; only 13 pages are photocopy. The majority of the pages bear extensive holograph corrections in Elman's hand, showing a labored, almost pained attempt to do justice to the Schrader screenplay, a copy of which is also included, with an additional 19 revision pages of its own. Accompanied by a typed letter signed by Paul Schrader to Elman (although apparently after the fact as it is written on "American Gigolo" stationery and dated 1980), transmitting a copy of the 1974 script and saying that he "subsequently did more work on the script, but this is a fair representation of what was intended." Also included is a cassette tape labeled "Taxi 2," on which Elman dictates portions of his novelization. Elman's pages are in a variety of conditions: some are wrinkled and edgeworn; some are on acidifying paper; some are fine. The screenplay is near fine; the revisions are heavily coffee-stained but entirely legible. Elman studied writing at Stanford with Yvor Winters and wrote a number of novels, several books of nonfiction and reportage, and published four poetry collections. His novelization of Taxi Driver, one of the greatest films of the last century, was clearly a more literary undertaking than most such novelizations are. Also included, for reasons unknown to us, is one page of lyrics of an Australian folk song. A unique archive pertaining to a great film. . First Edition.

        Carrie [Original Screenplay]

Los Angeles: United Artists, Undated.. First edition.. Original Movie Script.. First draft screenplay. An original first draft screenplay written by Larry Cohen and Paul Monash. Noted on the title page as "First Draft." ~Released by United Artists in 1976, "Carrie" was written by Lawrence D. Cohen, based on the the 1974 novel of the same name by Stephen King, directed by Brian De Palma, produced by Brian De Palma and Paul Monash, and starred Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, John Travolta and P.J. Soles. ~The script is bound with metal fasteners in a blue, heavy stock folder binder with the film's title showing through a die-cut window in the front cover. ~Pages numbered [1]-141 are white photostat copies of an original that had some handwritten notes in several places. The title page is undated, but displays the film's title, writers, production company, and that it is a "First Draft" screenplay adapted from the novel by Steven King [sic] . The title page is also stamped with the logo of the legendary agency founded by Evarts Ziegler and Hal Ross, the Ziegler-Ross Agency. The screenplay exhibits only minor wear from light handling and use and is otherwise clean and readable. ~The first of many film's to be based on the written work of Stephen King, "Carrie" went on to receive two Oscar nominations for the superb work of Spacek and Laurie. The film remains one of the most popular and critically acclaimed horror films of that decade, and an early example of the direction legendary director De Palma would trailblaze. ~An excellent piece of horror film history, extremely scarce in any form, and highly desirable and collectible.

Matching cloth slipcase with "solar"-red design on both sides. Printed on very thick archival stock paper in the United Kingdom to the very highest standards. In publisher&#39;s original paper wrappers. Without DJ, as issued. Presents the most collectible edition of Ian McEwan&#39;s "environmental" novel. The latter marks a return to his early satirical vein, as he eviscerates the academic and scientific establishments through one of his most memorably repulsive characters ever, Nobel Laureate Michael Beard. He fuses the satire with the scientific quest for alternative energies, the perfect metaphor for our time, as we try to find our way out of crises and predicaments internal and external. "McEwan&#39;s background research is so seamlessly displayed that scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, busy working on the same topic, might wonder if he&#39;s nicked their notes" (Time Magazine) . "Blending domestic satire with scientific inquiry, nods to concerns both personal and planetary in a tone that is at once ironic and heartfelt. It is exquisitely and defiantly McEwan-esque. Accept no imitations" (The Spectator) . "McEwan is one of the finest literary storytellers alive. He implants in the memory a living, flaming presence" (The New Republic) . A "must-have" edition for Ian McEwan completists. <b><i> This copy is Number 49, indicated as such on the Front Limitation Page, and is very prominently and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Ian McEwan. This edition is now highly collectible. This is one of very few copies still available online, is still in the publisher&#39;s original paper wrappers, and has absolutely no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. </b></i> Winner of the Somerset Maugham Award in 1976. Winner of the Booker Prize in 1998 for "Amsterdam". Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2002 for "Atonement". One of the greatest living writers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER IAN MCEWAN TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). Creative original tan vinyl cloth over wood by D&#39;Ambrosio, the unusual spine hinging vertically in the middle with the portion to the right becoming a serigraphed shadow box, and with strings running through holes in various locations (the spine, the wide lip at the bottom of front board, and at 11 places on the surface of the front cover), all contributing to the image of a circus tent, with taut ropes holding it up, paper title label on the spine portion of the shadow box, Japanese mulberry paper endpapers. In a sturdy card sleeve covered in Japanese mulberry paper. With 20 original color serigraphs signed and numbered by the artist. With duplicate photocopies of two letters from the artist to the original purchaser laid in at front. D&#39;Ambrosio, "Nineteen Years and Counting," p. 45. A little creasing to the left part of the spine, otherwise in virtually mint condition. This is a delightful example of the kind of consistently inventive, usually whimsical, and always severely limited works produced by one of the most charming book artists of the last part of the 20th century. Printed in Centaur and P. T. Barnum typefaces on Rives BFK paper using a number 3 Vandercook proof press, the book is a murder mystery involving the aerialists in a travelling circus. D&#39;Ambrosio (1934-2009) wrote the text here, which gave him more freedom in his illustrations. As he notes in his bibliography, I did not have to soften the design to complement another&#39;s manuscript without overpowering it. This freedom allowed for many graphic images integrated with letterpress printing." His training as an engineer was useful in creating the binding. " D&#39;Ambrosio declared in his letters that the "unique feature" of this book "is that the binding strings come out of the book and work their way to the front cover frame and become part of the circus tent artwork there." Our copy is one of just 17 with the honey-colored vinyl cloth the artist originally chose for the cover material. As he had no money to purchase all the materials needed to publish all copies of the books at once, he issued them in stages, using sales from early copies to fund production of later ones. When he went to buy more of the vinyl cloth for bindings it was no longer available, and copies 18-50 are bound in canvas. Of D&#39;Ambrosio, the California State Library Bulletin (#78) said, "this versatile artist not only designed, printed and bound his books but also wrote the text for several titles [as here]. Many were published in limited editions of less than fifty copies and are virtually impossible to acquire in the antiquarian market." D&#39;Ambrosio&#39;s best-known non-book work of art is the rotunda floor of the California State Library, a design of "concentric circles of the alphabet with the State Library logo in the middle" that "simply celebrates letters.".
