        Spring/Summer 1976 Plate 73

Christian Dior, Paris 1976 - This original croquis from the designer Christian Dior features a dress from the Spring/Summer 1976 collection, when the house was under designer Marc Bohan. This croquis was made from a xerograph of an original drawing, which was then hand-colored with ink, watercolor, and gouache. The design shows a long, elegant, pale green dress with a finely pleated skirt. Swatches of the appropriate fabric, one flat and one pleated, are stapled to the sheet. These sketches were produced in a limited quantity and presented to potential clients in attendance at the Paris Couture shows held by Dior in the spring and fall of each year. This example is in good condition and makes a wonderful document for any lover of fashion. Ink, watercolor and gouache on xerograph. Fabric swatches attached with staples. Sheet measures 12 1/2" x 8 7/8".

Le Morte D'Arthur: Printed by William Caxton [Facsimile edition]

London: The Scolar Press, 1976. First edition thus. One of 50 copies printed on hand-made paper and bound in full leather by The Eddington Bindery, from a total edition of 500 copies. A fine copy, housed in the original cloth slipcase. This facsimile edition was made from the only complete copy of William Caxton's 1485 edition of Le Morte D'Arthur, housed at the Pierpont Morgan Library. With early editions of Malory virtually unobtainable up to the 6th edition of 1634, this facsimile is the preferred text for institutions and other collectors who would strive for Grolier's "One Hundred Books Famous in English Literature" or PMM. & & Malory translated and compiled the legends of Arthur, Merlin, Lancelot, Guinevere, Sir Gawain, and the Knights of the Round Table, using numerous French and English sources. His work was first published in 1485 by William Caxton, the first English printer. It proved immensely popular and became the basis for the countless retellings and adaptations throughout the next five centuries (with a few periods of silence, namely 1634 - 1816). We can think of no other collection of stories that have more fully captured the imagination and passion of the English people than the Arthurian legends. & & "It is the only true English epic; its matter is 'the Matter of England'. The matchless style, the humour, the magnificence, the magic that takes away the breath, combine in a masterpiece of legendary narrative. Each century has produced its own version of the Arthurian tapestry, but Malory's will never be forgotten." (Printing and the Mind of Man, 29).

This is an impressive retrospective of some of Avedon's finest portraits. A fashion photographer for "Harper's Bazaar" from 1945 to 1965, Avedon became known for his stark images of people in unusual poses, leading to his first book of celebrity portraits, "Observations" (1959). He spent the better part of the 1960s outside the studio, photographing the Civil Rights and Anti-War movements. Leaving "Harper's Bazaar" for "Vogue" in 1966, Avedon has organized several celebrated and controversial exhibitions of his work, including "Avedon: Photographs 1947-1977" and "In the American West, " receiving a national award for visual excellence in 1976. Avedon became the first staff photographer for The New Yorker in 1992. He has won many awards for his photography, including the International Center of Photography Master of Photography Award in 1993, the Prix Nadar in 1994, and the Royal Photographic Society 150th Anniversary Medal in 2003.         The Missing Piece - 1st Edition/1st Printing

New York: Harper & Row, Publishers. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1976. First Edition; First Printing; Signed by Author. Hardcover. 0060256710 . An attractive copy in Near Fine condition in alike, price-clipped dustjacket with small closed tears. This copy is signed by author Shel Silverstein on the half-title page. Minor rubbing to boards; "It was missing a piece. And it was not happy." So begins this fable of quest and fulfillment with its sparse line illustrations to supplement the text. Singing nonsense rhymes it travels far and wide searching for its missing piece. Sadly, when it finds its missing piece and can roll very fast it discovers that life at a fast pace does not have time for pleasurable things like talking with friends, entertaining a butterfly, and singing a happy song. In fact, when it was complete it could not sing at all, so it set the piece down gently and slowly rolled away .

The Collected Essays of Sir Winston Churchill, complete in four volumes

London: Library of Imperial History, 1976. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. This four-volume set is a compilation of most of Churchill's major forwards and periodical contributions, some of which can be otherwise found only in the original periodical publications. The essays are sorted by subject and each of the volumes has a theme - Churchill and War, Churchill and Politics, Churchill and People, and Churchill at Large. In addition to being bibliographically important, The Collected Essays are aesthetically appealing. The production quality is impressive. There were two publisher binding options for The Collected Essays - both sumptuous and one positively extravagant. The lesser of the two was bound in quarter blue morocco and is lovely, but does not match the other 34 volumes of The Collected Works. The more elaborate binding option was full natural calfskin vellum with individual green slipcases, matching the 34 volumes of the preceding Centenary Edition of Churchill's book-length works. The bindings feature Churchill's coat of arms stamped in gilt. The text is printed on special 500-year archival paper and decorated with marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, head and foot bands, and silk ribbon markers. Each volume is protected in a dark green leather slipcase with the Churchill coat of arms embossed in gilt on the front cover. Either binding of The Collected Essays is scarce, but this more elaborate binding is rarely seen alone, as it is essential to completing a uniform full set of The Collected Works. Condition here of both the volumes and accompanying slipcases is superlative. The volumes are clearly unread. The bindings show no wear and have toned with grace and individual character, as the vellum bindings were intended to do. The contents are absolutely crisp and perfect, with pleasingly stiff bindings and satin ribbon markers still in the original position placed by the publisher. There are no previous ownership marks in the set, and indeed no indication that the volumes have ever been read. The accompanying green leather slipcases remain uniformly clean with no wear. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A286, Woods/ICS A146(b), Langworth p.355.

William Heinemann, Macmillan 1976 - ASSOCIATION COPIES: This collection of First Editions is comprised of individual volumes that were given as gifts by Wilbur Smith to his mother-in-law, the mother of his wife, Danielle Thomas, to whom he was married for over 20 years before she died of cancer in 1999, and to whom he dedicated 23 of his novels from GOLD MINE through MONSOON. All of the books originally existed in South Africa and were imported to the USA. Please review the signatures to the books. You will notice that many of the books have been signed, dedicated, and dated. The photos of the signatures show you the evolution of Wilbur's signature through the years. Wilbur rarely includes a hand-written date when he signs books. See if you can find a signed copy of SPARROW FALLS, let alone with the inclusion of "May 1977" or see if you can find a signed copy of WILD JUSTICE, let alone with the inclusion of "Feb 1979." This lot is exceedingly rare and for the collector who wishes to possess a collection of distinction when it comes to Wilbur Smith books. The volumes range in condition from Good to Near Fine, as do the Dust Jackets. I will supply as many photos as necessary to serious buyers. I have provenance from Wilbur Smith himself as to the authenticity of these signature and these books having been gifts to his mother, which provenance I will provide to the buyer; I specialize in Wilbur Smith books and have the most extensive stock available in the world. Let me help you build an unrivaled collection. Please contact me with your wants. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Autumn/Winter 1976-77 Croquis, Plate 70

Christian Dior, Paris 1976 - This original croquis from the designer Christian Dior features the pieces of an outfit from the Autumn/Winter 1976-77 collection, when the house was under designer Marc Bohan. This croquis was made from a xerograph of an original drawing, which was then hand-colored with ink, watercolor, and gouache. The design shows a long, sheer black coat over a shimmery dress. Swatches of the appropriate fabric, one black and the other a pale green, probably another option for the piece, are stapled to the sheet.

[Original Publicity Shot of the Ramones From Their Debut Album]

Roberta Bayley, 1976. 8" x 10" original black-and-white silver gelatin photographic print. With Bayley's stamp to verso. A couple of small layout notations to front. Several more to verso, as well as People Magazine's file stamp, noting this image's use in the Dec. 27th, 1976 issue, page 100 (our research indicates this is incorrect, however. There was no issue with this date, but the image does appear in the Jan. 3rd, 1977 issue). Else fine. One of most legendary and recognizable images in punk rock, indeed, in all of rock music. Bayley's iconic image of the Ramones - clad in jeans and black leather jackets, leaning against a graffitti-strewn brick wall - graced the cover of the band's 1976 self-titled debut LP. Sire Records had originally hired a professional photographer to take the promotional images for the album's release, but the band hated the resulting photos. With the record's release imminent, the foursome and manager Danny Fields quickly settled on Bayley's image which they felt perfectly captured the bands raw energy and simple power. Bayley began in the punk scene working the door at CBGB's in late 1974. The following year she purchased a camera and began photographing the burgeoning punk scene, quickly evolving into one of the movement's most important documenters, one whose style - candid, gritty, DIY - mirrored the music and punk style itself.
