        A River Runs Through It

University of Chicago Press, Chicago 1976 - True First Printing, one of about 5000 copies (though claims often are made the first run numbered as few as 1577 copies), with all first-issue points present: no printing history line on copyright page; disagreement between ISBN codes on copyright page and on the rear dust jacket flap (the latter is correct) and "adways" (for "always") on p. 27. 8vo: xiv,217,[1]pp. Publisher's sky-blue cloth, spine lettered in silver, mustard end papers; in matching blue dust jacket, priced $7.95, with woodcut vignette on front and author's photo on back panel. Very good in a very good dust jacket, with previous owner's 1976 gift message on the front free endpaper. A collector's copy of the author's masterpiece (and first book). "We lived at the junction of great trout rivers in western Montana, and our father was a Presbyterian minister and a fly fisherman who tied his own flies and taught others. He told us about Christ's disciples being fishermen, and we were left to assume, as my brother and I did, that all first-class fishermen on the Sea of Galilee were fly fishermen.'' Maclean's elegiac meditation on the intricacies of fly fishing, logging, fighting forest fires, playing cribbage and being a husband and father. Two novellas and a short story, the first of which was adapted to film by Robert Redford, with Tom Skerritt, Craig Sheffer, and Brad Pitt. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Autumn/Winter 1976-77 Croquis, Plate 70

Paris: Christian Dior, 1976. Ink, watercolor and gouache on xerograph. Fabric swatches attached with staples. Sheet measures 12 1/2" x 8 7/8". This original croquis from the designer Christian Dior features the pieces of an outfit from the Autumn/Winter 1976-77 collection, when the house was under designer Marc Bohan. This croquis was made from a xerograph of an original drawing, which was then hand-colored with ink, watercolor, and gouache. The design shows a long, sheer black coat over a shimmery dress. Swatches of the appropriate fabric, one black and the other a pale green, probably another option for the piece, are stapled to the sheet. These sketches were produced in a limited quantity and presented to potential clients in attendance at the Paris Couture shows held by Dior in the spring and fall of each year. This example is in good condition and makes a wonderful document for any lover of fashion.

Typed Letter Signed and Annotated; AND: Two Signed Original Letters of Contract appointing Joan Daves as Porter's Literary Agent; AND: a Short Autograph Note Signed from Katherine Anne Porter to her Literary Agent Joan Daves [Flowering Judas; The Collected Essays and Occasional Writings]

College Park, Maryland and New York: Katherine Anne Porter, 1976. First edition. Fine. A remarkable TYPED LETTER ANNOTATED and SIGNED from the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Katherine Anne Porter to her new Literary Agent Joan Daves, TOGETHER WITH: two ORIGINAL CONTRACTS FOR LITERARY REPRESENTATION SIGNED BY KATHERINE ANNE PORTER AND BY JOAN DAVES, TOGETHER WITH: a short PERSONAL AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED FROM KATHERINE ANNE PORTER TO JOAN DAVES, each in Fine condition but with a paper clip rust stain to the short note, a clean impression from the paperclip on the other documents, and expected fold lines to the letter and Contracts for mailing; A TOTAL OF FOUR ORIGINAL KATHERINE ANNE PORTER related to IMPORTANT LITERARY MATTERS. Dated June 23, 1976 and sent from Porter's apartment in College Park, Maryland, the letter begins: "Dear Joan: // Your packet of letters dated the first day of / summer, 1976 arrived this morning and Bill and I have / worked our way through it going around pulling straws / out of this fascinating haystack." Porter goes on to discuss a contract with Delacorte Press/Seymour Lawrence for her letters and those of Glenway Wescott which has been canceled because Wescott was impossible to work with on the project. Noting that she consequently owes Delacorte Press/Seymour Lawrence $15,000 [which we presume was an advance paid by the Publisher to Porter], she states that Barrett Prettyman [presumably noted attorney Barrett Prettyman, Jr.] has arranged for that sum to "be paid out of my estate after my death", a statement she has underlined and adjacent to which she has noted, in her hand, "GW's and mine" -- with "GW" referring, of course, to Glenway Westcott. Porter goes on to discuss the possible publication of letters to and from her, including "some extremely interesting letters with friends who are now dead, especially between Robert McAlmon and me over a good number of years and of course simply bales of letters from friends through our lives, some living some dead. Porter comments on the need for permission to publish letters from others to her, providing lines in the margin for emphasis. She concludes this portion of her letter with "This is to me a rather important thing and I should like to talk it over with you and show you such material as I have and take your advice as to whether it is a good thing to do. Let's take that up a little later." In the second page of her letter, Porter continues to discuss Literary matters. She begins: "Speaking of editors, my experience has taught me that I do not need an editor in anything I am publishing [emphasizing this assertion with marginal lines]. They edit obviously with the intent to open the jugular and I could give you a history that I thing would chill your blood, beginning with the first printing of my collection of stories FLOWERING JUDAS and ending with this piece of impudence you have seen in the Delacorte Press/Seymour Lawrence shambles." Porter states that she and other authors need only "...a proof reader who knows the English language and who knows how to spell and who does not try to correct my French or Spanish or German or even my English. I have long pondered an essay on this subject. If you think it would sell, let me know and I could toss it off as a letter to a friend." This last sentence has been underlined by Porter who goes on to discuss authors who "...sit with their hair on end correcting the idiotic errors in every book they publish. I often wonder what that galaxy of morons who edited my ESSAYS had in mind and what they did to see my unfortunate book on its way....I hope I am not being too vehement about this but I cannot otherwise convey to you how deeply I object to these editors activities any time, from any source, except at times advice from you if you will allow me to ask for it." Porter concludes that she has signed the author/agent agreement, sends it back, and that she is "...very much interested in having you care for all of my affairs and would appreciate your explaining to me your possible involvement with existing contracts made directly by me with my publishers. Can you arrange for better conditions." Porter ends her letter stating that she is sending a personal note to Daves and signs the letter "Katherine Anne", adding a brief annotation to her signature. Attached to the letter are two originals of the single-page Agency Agreement appointing Daves "to handle the marketing throughout the world of all my literary rights including but not limited to publishing, motion pictures, stage, radio, television, recording rights, and generally to advise me professionally...." each being signed by Daves and by Porter, with Porter adding her address and Social Security Number in her own hand. A short note, presumably the one to which Porter referred, is written on a piece of paper measuring approximately 4" x 3 1/4" and reads" "23 June 1976 - Summer is here! // Dear Joan - // Thank you for the / __ check - // I'll be delighted if there / is a possibility of my / reading my stories - I wish I / could do a collection of them! // Your visit here a delightful / memory - Too short though! // affection Katherine Anne". [Joan Daves was a Literary Agent of great note and was much respected in the trade, serving as agent for a number of important authors including Willie Morris, Kathryn Porter, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and others.] A wonderful collection of Katherine Porter items, full of Literary matters and expressing her views related to editors and other publishing matters and discussing potential publishing ventures and with ANNOTATIONS BY PORTER TO HERE LETTER AND A TOTAL OF FOUR ORIGINAL KATHERINE ANNE PORTER SIGNATURES. RARE INDEED.
