        The Art of Papermaking

Kilmurry, Sixmilebridge, Co. Clare, Ireland: Ashling Press, 1976. Folio. From an edition of 355 copies signed by Ian V. O'Casey, the papermaker and publisher, this copy is in an original designer binding by Arthur Johnson of bright viridian morocco. Onlays of morocco in a rainbow of hues, from ivory and gold to deep indigo and black, emanate from a point and curl outwards, evoking flying sheets of paper. Curving lines tooled in white continue the sense of motion across the covers. On the lower board, a small swirl of multi-colored onlays continues the motif. Titled to spine with orange morocco inlaid letters. Signed with the binder's stamp and date inside the lower cover. Accompanied by the artist's maquette for the front cover and spine, hand-painted in gouache on heavy paper and numbered "3." Affixed to the margin of the page are swatches of teal and brown leather. Comparing the plan to the executed binding, one can see how Johnson added additional colors, flourishes, and complexity to the final version. A founding member of Designer Bookbinders, Johnson was known for his bold sense of color and design. This first English language edition of an important work on papermaking is illustrated throughout with plates printed on blue handmade paper, one folding. Some slight, possibly natural variation to the texture of the morocco on the front cover, else very fine. In a dark green cloth-covered box bearing a cloth strip to the spine with cut-out letters forming the title. T.e.g.

PUNK MAGAZINE. A Complete run of all 15 issues in addition to the High Times Magazine supplement and the rare D.O.A. Film Book.

New York: Punk Publications Inc. - 1981 1976 - An excellent complete set of the original issues, including the two supplement volumes of this highly influential magazine. Although numbered 1 to 17 only 15 issues were produced (numbers 9 and 13 never made it to print). 17 volumes in total. Condition is very good or better throughout, and each issue is SIGNED by its creator John Holmstrom. Rather than focus on news and current events like the remaining Sixties underground papers, Punk covered the culture of rock and roll, and did so with a swaggering, take-no-prisoners attitude. It was intentionally shocking, the way rock and roll had once been, back when DJs smashed records on the air and Senate subcommittees linked comic books and rock and roll to juvenile delinquency. Holmstrom wanted to bring back that connection and run with it- not just the shocking energy, but the coupling of rock and roll with comics, two art forms that had grown up side by side. "There was this great music coming out of CBGBs," he says, "and I could tell rock and roll was headed in a certain way. I wanted to bring out a magazine that was sort of a combination of the Sixties underground papers and a comic book. We wanted to be the Mad magazine of rock and roll."       The Museum of Modern Art & The MIT Press, New York & Cambridge, MA 1976 - 112pp, 48 color and 1 b&w illustration. Designed by Carl Laanes. With a biography. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. This innovatively designed catalogue was published in conjunction with the 1976 exhibition of William Eggleston's haunting photos of everyday life in the American South held at New York's Museum of Modern Art. Curated by John Szarkowski, it was the first one-man show extended by MoMA solely to a color photographer - confirming Eggleston's well-deserved place in the pantheon of post-war photographic artists, and passing the torch on to the medium's new generation of practitioners. It is a supremely beautiful document, and a piece of twentieth century photo history as well. A bright, fresh, most handsome copy of the first edition of this wonderful tome (cited on page 265 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I", pages 308-309 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", page 29 of "From Fair to Fine: 20th Century Photography Books That Matter", page 18 of "From Fair to Fine 3" and pages 234-235 of "The Book of 101 Books") in the gilt embossed, pebble-grained boards with the pastedown of the green tricycle on the front cover INSCRIBED "For ., William Eggleston 1997" in black ink on the title page.         Zokushin (Gods of the Earth) (First Edition)

Ottos Books Company, Yokohama 1976 - First edition, first printing. Hardcover. White paper-covered boards with title stamped in gold on spine, with photographically illustrated dust jacket and publisher's labeled, cardboard slipcase. Photographs by Hiromi Tsuchida. Text (in Japanese and English) by Goichi Matsunaga. Includes a list of plates and a chronology (both in Japanese and English). 232 pp., with 103 black-and-white plates. 9-3/4 x 10-5/8 inches. CONDITION: Fine in Fine dust jacket and Near Fine slipcase. [Cited in Ryuichi Kaneko and Ivan Vartanian, Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and '70s. (New York: Aperture, 2009).] Tsuchida's nearly anthropological examination of traditional, rural Japanese culture features the extraordinary vitality and expressiveness of ordinary people just struggling to go through life in a rapidly changing world that threatens to wipe away their individuality. From the essay "Gods of the Earth," by Goichi Matsunaga: "The gods of the earth are alive today. They are doing their best, unabashedly, to expand their lives and [whether] eating, drinking or sleeping, to get more pleasure out of it than the next one. Making up their faces and defecating, visiting the shrine now and then on the way home from counting their money, buying cucumbers, scolding their children, buttering up the boss, going to the races, masturbating in broad daylight, picking off their fleas in the lockup.they are, you see, very busy. But these busy gods, unlike that handful of sacred people who live off other people's taxes, have to earn money to live. If it will earn them a living, there is nothing they will not do. They will do whatever humans are capable of, and all of that -- is human. Whether it is close to the animals' mode of life or far removed -- it is human. So here we have, for better or worse, a mass of human beings squirming, comically, tragically, in the last stage of capitalism (which does not show much promise of turning into socialism) on the islands of the easternmost part of Asia. The diverse expressions of the gods of the earth can still be seen today in Japan with all their tradition, and full of the vitality of their mixed origins. I cannot but wish them well."         A River Runs Through It

University of Chicago, Chicago 1976 - One of the most sought-after titles in recent American fiction, two long interrelated stories of a family for whom "there was no clear line between religion and fly-fishing." Published by the university press as a favor to a retiring professor, the book became a surprise success, first gaining readership through word of mouth recommendations and eventually necessitating many later printings, illustrated and gift editions. Basis for the Robert Redford film featuring Craig Sheffer, Brad Pitt, Tom Skerritt and Emily Lloyd. First issue points: typo page 27 and mismatched ISBN numbers. Slight foxing on top edge, else fine in a price-clipped, else fine dust jacket with very subtle spine fade. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

A River Runs Through It and Other Stories

University of Chicago Press, Chicago 1976 - Chicago; University of Chicago Press, 1976. First Edition (and first printing), with all first printing points, including incorrect ISBN on copyright page and "adways" (for "always") on page 27. Octavo, xiv+217 pp. Light blue cloth with silver spine lettering, light blue pictorial jacket. Contrary to other reports of the first print run being limited to only 1155 or 1577 copies, there were, in fact, 5,000 copies of the first printing of Maclean's serendipitous masterpiece, 3,000 in one run and 2,000 more after those were sold, with no discovered differences at this time between those runs. Near fine book, fine but for a previous owner's presentation inscription (dated in 1976, the year of publication, and an inscription I rather like, being from kids Rose and Paul to Daddy - of course having no idea at that time what they were giving him)). Jacket is better than Very Good plus, close to near fine, with a bit of spine fade, touched corners and one small closed tear, and is NOT price-clipped. Maclean's masterpiece, certainly from the soul, and almost meta-Taoist in its ability to convey the unspoken through words. "Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters. " A testament that the best poetry is native and unconscious, and couched in specific experience. Translated to the screen in a better-than-reasonable arrangement by Robert Redford, in one of his more successful attempts at deep sensitivity, with Tom Skerritt, Craig Sheffer, and Brad Pitt.         The Easter Parade [Inscribed Association Copy]

Delacorte, (NY) 1976 - One of Yates's most acclaimed novels. This copy is inscribed by the author: "For Wendy, Who is suited in every way to be one of the best mothers in the world, in the hope that her baby is a girl who'll turn out to be exactly like her. With love always, Dick. 9/15/76." The recipient, Wendy Sears, had been Yates's girlfriend in the early 1960s. He obviously still held her in high regard. Cocked, with some of the page signatures darkening; very good in a very good, spine-faded dust jacket with modest edge wear and one tear at the upper rear panel.         Report to the Secretary of the Army By the Special Commission on the United States Military Academy, regarding the Honor Code (with) Extensive Annotations By Col. "Red" Reeder, Letters and Notes.

USMA,, West Point New York: 1976 - A scathing and pithy commentary (also known as The Borman Report) on the state of affairs at West Point by Colonel Russell Potter "Red" Reeder, Jr. (1902 - 1998) United States Army officer, a highly decorated veteran of WWII and author - here reviews and comments on the Commission's investigation of the West Point system of Honor and its Code - nearly every page with his insertions, commentary and suggestions - at this time, the Point under scrutiny for reported abuses and scandals involving the cadets; Col. Reeder, for 20 years the respected Athletic Director of the USMA was concerned with and influential regarding changes needed in the Honor Code; this after several cheating incidents and 'scandals' concerning the cadets and incompetence on the part of the staff at the Point were publicly revealed; 91 pages, with handwritten marginal notations, underlining for emphasis in red and blue and references to other internal notes and incidents by him; Col. Reeder cites specific instances where the code and its application had been either abused or misinterpreted by less-than-caring Point administration, often resulting in unfair, foolishly judged and downright poor treatment of cadets; Throughout, Col. Reeder's approach is one of humanity and good sense and is especially potent, given that his entire life was spent within the U.S. Army under one aspect or another and his years of experience with the men and boys under his command gave him insight that would be difficult to surpass; At front is stapled-in a note on Reeder's letterhead, stating ".There will be moans abt. this report. Some at USMA think nothing is wrong. But in 30 years there have been two cadet honor dismissals, involving abt. 100 cadets each, plus one "Scandal" that was swept under the rug. USMA should expect some outside changes because they were not cleaning up internally."; laid-in are a carbon of a typed letter signed from Reeder to Col. Frank Borman, on the Special Commission, wherein Reeder tells of meeting with General of the Army Eisenhower who specifically had asked Col. Reeder about the cadet's adherence and loyalty to the Code and his concerns, Reeder noting that now more than ever is there need for paying attention to the good structure of the Academy since enrollment was nearly 4 times the size as when Eisenhower was a cadet; with a note to Col. William J. Taylor Jr. regarding the report and Taylor's grateful reply after reading it and Reeder's comments and recommendations; evidently, Reeder had sent the annotated report to several respected colleagues as well as the commission, since there are notes that Lt.Col. Dale Hruby as well as Brig. Gen. Harvey Fraser had been in communication, list in reviewing this document (their names both on the front cover as being forwarded the report); side-stapled; some edge tips wear, soiling to cover sheet and back cover, which is coming loose from the stapling; laid-in materials with light wear and contained in the original manila envelope titled in Reeder's hand (worn with tears); overall, in very good condition; a very interesting annotated report and group of correspondence, a unique archive of material concerning the USMA at West Point during a particularly troublesome time of upheaval and self- examination, especially as coming from the knowledgeable pen of the prominent Col. Reeder. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Freedom For Political Prisoners

Wilfred Owen Brigade, San Francisco 1976 - An early work by the important San Francisco revolutionary art collective known briefly (from about 1975-1977) as the Wilfred Owen Brigade and later as the San Francisco Poster Brigade. Though the SFPB produced and posted its work anonymously, the primary creative force behind the group was Rachel Romero, still active as an artist and printmaker in Northern California. Others were involved, including artist/curator/impresario Leon Klayman who, according to Romero, played primarily an organizational and distributional role. Most SFPB works were produced first by linocut, then reproduced in larger quantities by photo-offset; the original block-prints are uncommon. This is a particularly early and uncommon graphic. Offsest lithographed poster, 17" x 25". Printed in black on heavy poster stock, off-white. Fine example, archivally hinged to acid-free backing, in gallery frame.

Original Handbill Advertising the Sex Pistols at the 100 Club, Oxford Street, London, June 29 and July 6, 1976]

np [1976], (London) - Handbill. 8 1/4" x 11 3/4". Printed recto only. Very good with some flattened creases and a 1/3" edge tear on the bottom. Artwork by Jamie Reid, featuring a repeated image of Rotten/Lydon snarling into a mic. Beginning in 1976, The Sex Pistols' took up Tuesday night residency at the 100 Club (a venue better known until then for jazz), gigs that would be pivotal for the band. As Jon Savage has written in his definitive ENGLAND'S DREAMING: "In the intimate setting of the 100 Club, the group could relax enough to take risks with their material and their performances. There they began to master their equipment, using the acoustics of the small club to experiment with overload, feedback and distortion. Electric amplification had provided much of the excitement of early Rock'n'Roll: pushing their equipment to the limit [.] the Sex Pistols twisted their limited repertoire into a noise as futuristic as their rhetoric" (177). The club also served as location for the famed 100 Club Punk Special, a two-day festival featuring the Pistols, The Damned, The Buzzcocks, The Clash, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and other unsigned acts, an event that was instrumental in bringing punk to the mainstream. It was also at the 100 Club pogoing was first invented, a development often attributed to Sid Vicious, but more likely simply fans' practical response to poor visibility in the tight confines of the club. Describing the June 29th date (of which bootlegs exist), Savage writes: "[B]ut the 100 Club take is something else. Here the Pistols are wound up to a pitch of impossible tautness: they swoop and drive through their fifteen songs (more than half of all they would ever play in their brief life)." This performance also almost certainly marked the first public performance of "Flowers of Romance." In addition, the July 6 date is significant the first "real" show by The Damned, who opened. Together, two landmark performances for the group that defined British punk rock. While Reid's more commercial work for the Pistols appears with some regularity, early and ephemeral promotional items like this are decidedly more scarce. And after Reid's iconic "God Save the Queen" flyer, arguably the defining Sex Pistols handbill, perfectly combining the raw energy of the group with Reid's signature punk style. This image was also utilized by Reid in his design of the Sex Pistols' press kit. See Reid & Savage, UP THEY RISE, p. 49 and Burgess and Parker, SATELLITE, p. 79.
