        Laboratories of the Spirit

Swansea: Gwasg Gregynog (but University of Wales Press), 1976 NF, Limited Ed, Gregynog. Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in quarter brown goatskin, gold rule, with beige cloth boards, titles in gold on the spine, no inscriptions, (viii), 73 pp, 285*190 mm, an edition limited to just 220 copies, however per a loose note from Gregynog it was reduced by 25 copies as there were "certain production difficulties" (problems with mould), it was actually produced at the University of Wales Press, as Gwasg Gregynog had yet to be incorporated, but the Gregynog name was on the title page. Produced by Michael Hutchins over a period of 18 months, who also drew the Capitals for initials, press device by Keith Holmes, this volume was not illustrated per the poet's wishes. Some light spotting to 2 pages (as normal). A lovely copy of an uncommon and desirable Gregynog title. (Esslemont Hughes No 1)

Kalligraafilisi Etuude [Calligraphical Studies] Presentation, Association, Laid-in Ephemera

Tallinn, Estonia: Kirjastus Kunst, 1976. Tallinn, Estonia: Kirjastus Kunst, 1976 Tallinn, Estonia: Kirjastus Kunst, 1976. First Edition. Signed, warmly inscribed and dated by the author in calligraphic freehand on the ffep, to Don Moy, contributing editor of Fine Print. Toots' "Happy New Year" self-portrait remembrance greeting card is laid in as well, also signed, also to Moy. Quarto, 142 pp. Bright yellow buckram boards, black spine with yellow imprinting. Extremely minimal peripheral wear, as close to fine as near fine can be. In protective mylar. A tour-de-force of the esteemed Estonian calligraphic artist, 31 pages of text [in Estonian] with the balance of the volume being a broad variety of Toots' artful calligraphic works, each full page, black-on-white, white-on-black, and in some cases bicolor. One of these is a calligraphically presented quote from Stanley Morison: "Calligraphy is a term used for the description of a hand in which the freedom is so nicely reconciled with the order that the understanding eye recognizes the scribe's right proportioning of the part to the whole of the letter, the letter to the whole of the word, the words to a length of line, the lines to a due depth of area, and pleasing disposition of the block of writing upon the page area, by the retention of consistent margins." Toots in so admired in his specialty that, among other honors, he has had several new typefaces named for him - not to mention the posh Harrogate, England restaurant of the same name. Scarce calligraphic collectible. lG4

Houghton Mifflin, New York 1976 - Houghton Mifflin. New York. 1976. 365 pages. 1st Edition, 10th printing. (this copy is the only other hardcover of this title I've seen by Houghton Mifflin that is not a 1st printing). SIGNED by Tom Robbins directly to the title page; signature only. Signed in person in NYC during the 2014 book tour of Mr. Robbins autobiography or as he would say, a true account of an imaginative life, titled Tibetan Peach Pie. Just 2 months shy of his 82nd birthday, Tom Robbins graciously signed this book as well as others. As for the book, it appears unread. Corners are sharp. Yellow endpapers are bright and clean. White pages are bright and pages lay tight. Quarter bound with turquoise blue Cloth with a white binding. Both areas are bright and clean with bright titles on the backstrip. Charcoal gray topstain. The only thing keeping the book itself from grading Fine is that the book is cocked (a lean). The DJ is identical to the 1st printing DJ. $10.95 price is intact (same as the 1st printing DJ as are the front and rear covers as well as flaps). DJ is VG as there is light rubbing, mostly to the rear. A couple of tiny chips and closed tears along DJ edges. A couple of faint specks to DJ, most faint. An uncommon hardcover in any printing by Houghton Mifflin, let alone one with a 1st printing DJ and SIGNED!!! [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[Original Handbill Advertising the Sex Pistols at the 100 Club, Oxford Street, London, June 29 and July 6, 1976]

(London): np, [1976]. First Edition. Very Good. Handbill. 8 1/4" x 11 3/4". Printed recto only. Very good with some flattened creases and a 1/3” edge tear on the bottom. Artwork by Jamie Reid, featuring a repeated image of Rotten/Lydon snarling into a mic. Beginning in 1976, The Sex Pistols' took up Tuesday night residency at the 100 Club (a venue better known until then for jazz), gigs that would be pivotal for the band. As Jon Savage has written in his definitive ENGLAND'S DREAMING: "In the intimate setting of the 100 Club, the group could relax enough to take risks with their material and their performances. There they began to master their equipment, using the acoustics of the small club to experiment with overload, feedback and distortion. Electric amplification had provided much of the excitement of early Rock'n'Roll: pushing their equipment to the limit [...] the Sex Pistols twisted their limited repertoire into a noise as futuristic as their rhetoric" (177). The club also served as location for the famed 100 Club Punk Special, a two-day festival featuring the Pistols, The Damned, The Buzzcocks, The Clash, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and other unsigned acts, an event that was instrumental in bringing punk to the mainstream. It was also at the 100 Club pogoing was first invented, a development often attributed to Sid Vicious, but more likely simply fans' practical response to poor visibility in the tight confines of the club. Describing the June 29th date (of which bootlegs exist), Savage writes: "[B]ut the 100 Club take is something else. Here the Pistols are wound up to a pitch of impossible tautness: they swoop and drive through their fifteen songs (more than half of all they would ever play in their brief life)." This performance also almost certainly marked the first public performance of "Flowers of Romance." In addition, the July 6 date is significant the first “real” show by The Damned, who opened. Together, two landmark performances for the group that defined British punk rock. While Reid's more commercial work for the Pistols appears with some regularity, early and ephemeral promotional items like this are decidedly more scarce. And after Reid's iconic "God Save the Queen" flyer, arguably the defining Sex Pistols handbill, perfectly combining the raw energy of the group with Reid's signature punk style. This image was also utilized by Reid in his design of the Sex Pistols' press kit. See Reid & Savage, UP THEY RISE, p. 49 and Burgess and Parker, SATELLITE, p. 79. A clean near fine copy with a former owner embossed name to the title page in a very good price clipped dust jacket that has a number of small edge tears that have been repaired with tape to the verso. Still, a very nice of the uncommon cloth issue of this powerful monograph. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Collected Essays of Sir Winston Churchill, complete in four volumes

London: Library of Imperial History, 1976. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine. This set is from the personal collection of Churchill's bibliographer, Ronald I. Cohen. This four-volume set is a compilation of most of Churchill's major forewords and periodical contributions, some of which can be otherwise found only in the original periodical publications. The essays are sorted by subject and each of the volumes has a theme - Churchill and War, Churchill and Politics, Churchill and People, and Churchill at Large. In addition to being bibliographically important, The Collected Essays are aesthetically appealing. The production quality is impressive. There were two publisher binding options for The Collected Essays - both sumptuous and one positively extravagant. The lesser of the two was bound in quarter blue morocco and is lovely, but does not match the other 34 volumes of The Collected Works. The more elaborate binding option was full natural calfskin vellum with individual green slipcases, matching the 34 volumes of the preceding Centenary Edition of Churchill's book-length works. The bindings feature Churchill's coat of arms stamped in gilt. The text is printed on special 500-year archival paper and decorated with marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, head and foot bands, and silk ribbon markers. Each volume is protected in a dark green leather slipcase with the Churchill coat of arms embossed in gilt on the front cover. Either binding of The Collected Essays is scarce, but this more elaborate binding is rarely seen alone, as it is essential to completing a uniform full set of The Collected Works. Condition here of both the volumes and accompanying slipcases is near fine. The set has been used, but only gently by Mr. Cohen as a reference as he compiled his Bibliography. The bindings and pages still retain a stiff, unused feel. The bindings show no wear and have gently toned as they were intended to do, perhaps less than most sets we see. The contents are free of ownership marks and retain perfect edge gilt. Only a little normal wrinkling to the green satin ribbon markers betrays light use. The accompanying green leather slipcases remain uniformly clean with a trivial scratch to the front cover of the Volume III slipcase and minor dents to the upper front corners of the Volume I and IV slipcases. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A286, Woods/ICS A146(b), Langworth p.355.

        Interview With The Vampire

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1976.. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1976. First edition of the author's first book. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by Anne Rice on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. A very bright copy. Anne Rice's first novel is a "seminal modern vampire novel" but also a "profoundly modern exploration of human sexuality, religious beliefs and personal philosophies… Rice's interweaving of fiction and historical fact and atmospheric rendering of New Orleans as a city where the living and undead mingle are particularly powerful… [Her] Vampire Chronicles are landmarks of modern horror fiction almost single-handedly responsible for the phenomenal popularity of the vampire story at the end of the 20th century" (Barron, Fantasy and Horror 303).

        Watership Down.

Paradine, London 1976 - Limited edition, one of 250 numbered copies, this copy being number 10. Octavo, original full morocco bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe.Raised bands, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, front panel with gilt stamping of two rabits, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Signed by Richard Adams and the illustrator. In fine condition with the original slipcase. Although Watership Down was rejected by 13 publishers before Collings accepted it, it has never been out of print, and is Penguin Books' best-selling novel of all time. It won both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Prize. The title refers to a hill in the north of Hampshire, England, near the area where Adams grew up. The story has its roots in the tales that Richard Adams made up for his young daughters during long car journeys. As he explained in 2007 in an interview with the BBC, he "began telling the story of the rabbits . improvised off the top of my head, as we were driving along." He based the struggles of the animals on the struggles he and his friends encountered during the Battle of Oosterbeek in 1944. The daughters insisted he write it down—"they were very, very persistent." After some delay he began writing in the evenings and completed it 18 months later. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
