        Interview With The Vampire

NY: Knopf. 1976. Her acclaimed first book, the first in the Vampire Lestat series, and one of the unlikeliest success stories of any publishing season. Modest hardcover sales of the book would not have led one to imagine the long-term popularity and success of Rice's later books in the Vampire Lestat series, nor did they predict the huge success this novel had in paperback, selling millions of copies; it has been estimated that Rice has sold more than a hundred million copies of her books over the years, and this title has gone through several successive collectible editions. Even so, Rice's novels did not begin to approach such sales again until her second vampire novel, which was published after two mainstream historical novels. Rice's vampire novels have been unprecedented bestsellers as well as being critically acclaimed, and even her erotic novels of sado-masochism have achieved a kind of mainstream success that defies prediction. This was the basis for a well-received movie in 1994, directed by Neil Jordan and starring Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, among others. Rice abandoned the vampire genre in 2004, in a prominently announced return to her Roman Catholic faith. This is the scarcest of the books, particularly in nice condition, as the gold foil dust jacket is notoriously prone to wear. Fine in a fine dust jacket, and scarce thus. First Edition. Hardcover.

        The Education of Little Tree

(n.p.): Delacorte. (1976). The uncorrected proof copy of Carter's most famous book, which its publisher originally identified as "a true story" while it identified the author as a "part-blood Cherokee who is Storyteller in Council to the Cherokee Nations." A dozen years after its initial publication, The Education of Little Tree was chosen by independent booksellers as the book they most liked to sell and it became a word-of-mouth bestseller in a paperback edition published by the University of New Mexico Press. Later, Carter was discovered to be a white man from Alabama who had worked for right-wing politician George Wallace, writing racist propaganda. Carter may have written racist tracts for George Wallace, but in The Education of Little Tree he endorsed humanist values of a high order, which he ascribed to Native American traditions -- respect for the land and one's family, honoring one's elders, promoting generosity and good faith, abhorring hypocrisy and brutality. Even as fiction, The Education of Little Tree raises serious and difficult questions, but it has been taken by many as strongly promoting a healthy sensitivity to, and respect for, Native American traditions and perspectives. In some circles, the question of the book's authenticity is today less of an issue than that of its sentimentality. "Little Tree" handwritten on spine; paperclip imprint top edge of front cover; near fine in tall wrappers. Extremely scarce: this is the only copy of the proof we've ever seen, and it dates from an era when, first, proofs were less widely distributed than they later came to be and, second, they were less likely to be viewed as collectibles and filtered into the rare book market, and more likely to simply be discarded after use. First Edition. Softcover.

Tome V, VII-695 pages. Tome VI, VI-705 pages. Tome VlI, XV-765 pages.

        Stories & Illustrations by Harley

[No place]: Charlatan Press. 1976. First. First edition. Introduction by Allen Ginsberg (misspelled on the cover as "Ginsburg"). Octavo. [26]pp. Papercovered boards with cloth spine and illustrated in full color. Very good or better with rubbing to the boards, light wear at the corners and a few tiny scrapes. Inscribed and Signed in a childish hand by author/illustrator Harley Flanagan, who at 12 became the drummer for the punk band, The Stimulators, and went on to found the seminal hardcore band, The Cro-Mags. Flanagan was just nine when this collection of his two self-illustrated stories was published by his mother, a hippie named Rosebud who had lived on a farm with Ginsberg and enlisted the poet to pen the introduction to this volume. An uncommon book in any state, we've never seen another copy with a contemporary inscription from Flanagan. Certainly one of the more unusual items from Ginsberg's career and a curious piece of punk history. Morgan B123 .

New York: Knopf, (1976) - Very Near Fine First Edition of this landmark title in its equally Near Fine fragile dust jacket. The gold, simulated metallic jacket, notoriously difficult to find in really excellent condition, is here a very presentable example, bright and fresh, with but an inch or so of creasing at top left of front panel and a minuscule chip to spine crown. All told, a lovely copy. Basis, of course, for the now cult classic 1994 Neil Jordan-directed film starring Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Antonio Banderas and Kirsten Dunst.         Das wachsende Gedicht. Einundzwanzig Gedichte von Erwin Jaeckle mit neun Originalholzschnitten von Oskar Dalvit.

Nr. 97/160 Ex. Werkhinweis: Aargauer Kunsthaus Aarau; Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel, Kupferstichkabinett; Kunstmuseum St. Gallen; Kunsthaus Glarus; Museum für Gestaltung Zürich; Zürich, Graphische Sammlung der ETH; New York, Solomon R.         Report to the Secretary of the Army By the Special Commission on the United States Military Academy, regarding the Honor Code (with) Extensive Annotations By Col. "Red" Reeder, Letters and Notes

West Point New York:: USMA,. 1976.. Staple-Bound. Very Good. A scathing and pithy commentary (also known as The Borman Report) on the state of affairs at West Point by Colonel Russell Potter "Red" Reeder, Jr. (1902 - 1998) United States Army officer, a highly decorated veteran of WWII and author - here reviews and comments on the Commission's investigation of the West Point system of Honor and its Code - nearly every page with his insertions, commentary and suggestions - at this time, the Point under scrutiny for reported abuses and scandals involving the cadets; Col. Reeder, for 20 years the respected Athletic Director of the USMA was concerned with and influential regarding changes needed in the Honor Code; this after several cheating incidents and 'scandals' concerning the cadets and incompetence on the part of the staff at the Point were publicly revealed; 91 pages, with handwritten marginal notations, underlining for emphasis in red and blue and references to other internal notes and incidents by him; Col. Reeder cites specific instances where the code and its application had been either abused or misinterpreted by less-than-caring Point administration, often resulting in unfair, foolishly judged and downright poor treatment of cadets; Throughout, Col. Reeder's approach is one of humanity and good sense and is especially potent, given that his entire life was spent within the U.S. Army under one aspect or another and his years of experience with the men and boys under his command gave him insight that would be difficult to surpass; At front is stapled-in a note on Reeder's letterhead, stating "...There will be moans abt. this report. Some at USMA think nothing is wrong. But in 30 years there have been two cadet honor dismissals, involving abt. 100 cadets each, plus one "Scandal" that was swept under the rug.. USMA should expect some outside changes because they were not cleaning up internally..."; laid-in are a carbon of a typed letter signed from Reeder to Col. Frank Borman, on the Special Commission, wherein Reeder tells of meeting with General of the Army Eisenhower who specifically had asked Col. Reeder about the cadet's adherence and loyalty to the Code and his concerns, Reeder noting that now more than ever is there need for paying attention to the good structure of the Academy since enrollment was nearly 4 times the size as when Eisenhower was a cadet; with a note to Col. William J. Taylor Jr. regarding the report and Taylor's grateful reply after reading it and Reeder's comments and recommendations; evidently, Reeder had sent the annotated report to several respected colleagues as well as the commission, since there are notes that Lt.Col. Dale Hruby as well as Brig. Gen. Harvey Fraser had been in communication, list in reviewing this document (their names both on the front cover as being forwarded the report); side-stapled; some edge tips wear, soiling to cover sheet and back cover, which is coming loose from the stapling; laid-in materials with light wear and contained in the original manila envelope titled in Reeder's hand (worn with tears); overall, in very good condition; a very interesting annotated report and group of correspondence, a unique archive of material concerning the USMA at West Point during a particularly troublesome time of upheaval and self- examination, especially as coming from the knowledgeable pen of the prominent Col. Reeder.

HAMPSTEAD ENGLAND UK ROCHESTER NEW HAMPSHIRE NH 1976 - On offer is a super archive of seven [7] handwritten autograph letters signed [ALS] by Richard Carline [1896-1980] notable British artist and writer, dated between 1976 and 1978 (plus one [1] ALS by his wife Nancy) to Professor Frederick Solomon, the famed German Expressionist artist, Rabbi and friend of Carline from their old days in London. Richard Carline was an official war artist during World War I, serving in Palestine, Persia, and India. After the war, he lived in Hampstead. He joined the Middlesex Regiment in 1916, and became an officer of the Royal Flying Corps. In 1918 he was made a war artist, in which capacity he produced a series of war paintings from the air, now displayed in the Imperial War Museum. Carline attended Slade School of Art from 1921 to 1924. For over fifty years his work was displayed by the London Group, to which he was elected in 1920. Throughout his life Carline promoted a more liberal attitude to the evaluation of children's and ethnic art. His paintings are in many important collections including The Tate Museum. The letters are written to Solomon in New Hampshire. The archive boasts rather long letters with a great deal of intimate, collegial art content. Written a mere 4 years before Carline's death.         Imperial Earth

Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, New York 1976 - First edition. Slight tape shadows on the front fly, near fine in fine dustwrapper. The tape shadows are from a laid-in (and formerly attached) printed card "With the compliments of the Author" Inscribed in the card by Arthur C. Clarke to his protege, one-time secretary, and longtime friend Ian Macauley; "Dear Ian -- believe it or not, I started writing this only three years after *Islands in the Sky*! All the best, Arthur." The card exhibits some small corresponding tape stains. Macauley was the dedicatee of Clarke's first published hardcover novel, *Islands in the Sky*, and was an award-winning *New York Times* journalist. He also edited Clarke's book of collected essays, *Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds!* (2000). Clarke wrote the last chapter of *Childhood End*, while visiting Macauley in Atlanta, where he was reportedly greatly influenced by their discussions. A nice association copy of this science-fiction novel. See this book in 3D on our site. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
