SNIFFIN GLUE. Volumes 1 through to 12. Together with issue 5.5 (Sniffin Snow)

London: Mark Perry. 1976-1977. First Editions. Quartos. Mimeograph stapled magazines. Thirteen volumes. Original issues of numbers one to twelve and the half issue Sniffin Snow. Complete with the original flexi-disc single Love Lies Limp by Alternative TV on SG Records as issued with number 12. All issues are generally in very good condition, with some staple rust to a couple of volumes, and the odd finger-mark to margins here and there. NME acclaimed "Sniffin' Glue" as "the nastiest, healthiest and funniest piece of press in the history of rock'n'roll habits" and it became the true chronicle of the early days of British punk rock as well as pioneering the DIY punk ethic. Fearing absorption into the mainstream music press, Perry ceased publication in 1977 with issue 12. The early and half issues are rare. OCLC records just one incomplete set in the USA and none in the UK. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request.         Collection of 5 volumes (including Bardo Matrix Press, Kathmandu, Nepal)

Kathmandu, Nepal and New York: Bardo Matrix [et al.], 1976-2000. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. NEAR FINE. Together 5 volumes, original bindings (see below) Fascinating collection of five volumes of Ira Cohen poetry materials, none of which are represented in the obvious American libraries. Cohen (1935-2011) was an American author, artist, filmmaker and photographer of some merit. One of the volumes is from Cohen's Bardo Matrix press (Kathmandu, Nepal), printed on fine Tibetan paper -- a rather unusual imprint. The press release for the 2014 Grolier Club exhibition of BARDO MATRIX materials: "The Bardo Matrix Press was founded in Kathmandu in the early 1970s by original Velvet Underground drummer, artist and poet Angus MacLise and poet, photographer and publisher Ira Cohen as a publishing outgrowth of the Colorado artists?' collective of the same name. [Angus] MacLise and Cohen commenced issuing pamphlets, booklets, posters, books, and broadsides by not only themselves and their fellow travelers, but also by some of the most important names of post-war literature: Paul Bowles, Gregory Corso, Diane Di Prima, and Charles Henri Ford were among the chosen." CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION: Cohen, Ira. Poems from the Cosmic Crypt. Drawings by Petra Vogt. Kathmandu, Nepal: Kali Press / Bardo Matrix, 1976. Printed in Nepal on off-white rice paper. Letterpress in black, with purple and silver woodblocks and black and white drawing plates tipped-in. Original black cloth, stitch bound. AS NEW. Laid in: Unrecorded broadside ("On Dreamers!") printed on rice paper (likewise from the Bardo Matrix Press?). Ira Cohen's highly interesting private press (located in Kathmandu, Nepal) which issued the work of modernist poets in very limited numbers, e.g. Charles Henri Ford, Gregory Corso, Angus MacLise, Ira Cohen, and others. Edition limited to 500 copies (this one unnumbered). 9.75 x 7". Unpaginated. "Poems from the Cosmic Crypt, published in collaboration with Ian Alsop's Kali Press, utilized a laid paper made in India which allowed for printing both sides of a page in a hard covered book of some ninety pages. The book also contained a group of white on black drawings made by Petra Vogt. Some poems were printed in the poet's own handwriting from woodblocks cut by Tibetans who did not even know the English alphabet." Source: Ira Cohen: The Great Rice Paper Adventure in Kathmandu: 1972-1977 (New Observations, New York City, Issue 106, May/June 1995. Guest Editor: Valery Oisteanu). WITH: Cohen, Ira. The book includes poems, plus b/w photographs by the author of Jack Smith, Brion Gysin, Kazuo Ohno, Faye Cohen, Lakshmi Cohen, Gregory Corso, Mikki Maher, Vali Myers, Angus MacLise, Caroline Gosselin, Raphael Aladdin Cohen, and others. WITH: Ira Cohen. Goodie, Vol. 1 No. 1, 1999. Art and poetry zine from NYC published by Foxy Kidd. Photocopy (as issued). Interviews with Ira Cohen, featuring his poems and photographs.         PUNK MAGAZINE A Complete run of all 15 issues in addition to the High Times Magazine supplement and the rare D O A Film Book

New York: Punk Publications Inc. 1976 - 1981. An excellent complete set of the original issues, including the two supplement volumes of this highly influential magazine. Although numbered 1 to 17 only 15 issues were produced (numbers 9 and 13 never made it to print). 17 volumes in total. Condition is very good or better throughout, and each issue is SIGNED by its creator John Holmstrom. Rather than focus on news and current events like the remaining Sixties underground papers, Punk covered the culture of rock and roll, and did so with a swaggering, take-no-prisoners attitude. It was intentionally shocking, the way rock and roll had once been, back when DJs smashed records on the air and Senate subcommittees linked comic books and rock and roll to juvenile delinquency. Holmstrom wanted to bring back that connection and run with it- not just the shocking energy, but the coupling of rock and roll with comics, two art forms that had grown up side by side. "There was this great music coming out of CBGBs," he says, "and I could tell rock and roll was headed in a certain way. I wanted to bring out a magazine that was sort of a combination of the Sixties underground papers and a comic book. We wanted to be the Mad magazine of rock and roll."         A River Runs Through It and Other Stories

Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1976 Chicago; University of Chicago Press, 1976. First Edition (and first printing), with all first printing points, including incorrect ISBN on copyright page and "adways" (for "always") on page 27. Octavo, xiv+217 pp. Light blue cloth with silver spine lettering, light blue pictorial jacket. Contrary to other reports of the first print run being limited to only 1155 or 1577 copies, there were, in fact, 5,000 copies of the first printing of Maclean's serendipitous masterpiece, 3,000 in one run and 2,000 more after those were sold, with no discovered differences at this time between those runs. Near fine book, fine but for a previous owner's presentation inscription (dated in 1976, the year of publication, and an inscription I rather like, being from kids Rose and Paul to Daddy - of course having no idea at that time what they were giving him)). Jacket is better than Very Good plus, close to near fine, with a bit of spine fade, touched corners and one small closed tear, and is NOT price-clipped. Maclean's masterpiece, certainly from the soul, and almost meta-Taoist in its ability to convey the unspoken through words. "Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs........ I am haunted by waters. " A testament that the best poetry is native and unconscious, and couched in specific experience. Translated to the screen in a better-than-reasonable arrangement by Robert Redford, in one of his more successful attempts at deep sensitivity, with Tom Skerritt, Craig Sheffer, and Brad Pitt. L18
