Bolan's Original Design Notes for the 1976 T-Rex Album, "Futuristic Dragon"

[1976]. A small archive of handwritten notations and drawings by Marc Bolan regarding his design wishes for the 1976 T. Rex album, Futuristic Dragon. Three 5" x 8" sheets (one lined) with drawing and notations. Creases and some wear, very good or better, along with a near fine copy of the album with one corner bumped. The archive includes a primitive sketch of the cover design mirroring very closely the polished finished artwork by designer George Underwood, and ideas regarding "graffiks" (accompanied by a drawing): "Marc astride a silver dragon, like in arbian [sic] knightsoval like a Marvel comic logo" and "get a Jones in your bones / a Skellinton with an afro." Lastly, Boland has written out the band credits, production credits, and thank yous. At the end of the final leaf, Bolan has added a gift Inscription with a small drawing of a face: "to george with love." Futuristic Dragon was something of a comeback for Bolan, who was at the time briefly on the mend from cocaine addiction and weight gain. The album was driven by the success of two singles that preceded it, "New York City" and "Dreamy Lady." The record is notable for its dense Phil Spector-esque production style, and is today considered one the band's most underrate effort. From the personal archives of album designer George Underwood. A unique T-Rex artifact created by Bolan's own hand.

        Imperial Earth

New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich. (1976). First. First edition. Slight tape shadows on the front fly, near fine in fine dustwrapper. The tape shadows are from a laid-in (and formerly attached) printed card "With the compliments of the Author" Inscribed in the card by Arthur C. Clarke to his protege, one-time secretary, and longtime friend Ian Macauley; "Dear Ian -- believe it or not, I started writing this only three years after Islands in the Sky! All the best, Arthur." The card exhibits some small corresponding tape stains. Macauley was the dedicatee of Clarke's first published hardcover novel, Islands in the Sky, and was an award-winning New York Times journalist. He also edited Clarke's book of collected essays, Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds! (2000). Clarke wrote the last chapter of Childhood End, while visiting Macauley in Atlanta, where he was reportedly greatly influenced by their discussions. A nice association copy of this science-fiction novel. .
