The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights

first edition. This is a group of three carbon typescripts, all with holographic corrections by Steinbeck, and one carbon manuscript that comprise three chapters of what Farrar, Straus & Giroux published as The Acts of King Arthur and His Nobel Knights in 1976, eight years after the death of Steinbeck and 17 years after the 1959 date these chapters were written, the chapters are The Knight With The Two Swords,Gawain, Ewain, and Marhalt, and The Noble Tale of Sir Lancelot of the Lake, this typescript and manuscript material totals 348 leafs, on typing paper and sheets of lined legal-sized yellow notepaper, housed within a green marbled custom folding box with leather spine with author's name and title in gilt are the carbon manuscript of The Noble Tale of Sir Lancelot of the Lake, 81 leafs numbered 19-100, followed by 168 leafs of carbon typescript for this chapter, with notes in Steinbeck's hand, together with a blue marbled custom folding box with leather spine with author and title in gilt that houses the carbon typescript for The Knight With The Two Swords, dated May 16, 1959, being 22 leafs, with many penciled corrections, deletions, and revisions by Steinbeck, followed by Gawain, Ewain and Marhalt, noted in pencil as Section 5 and dated July 1959, being 72 leafs, also with many ink corrections, deletions, and revisions in Steinbeck's hand, Steinbeck's fascination with King Arthur began when his Aunt Mollie gave him a copy of The Boy's King Arthur when he was eight years old, that book began a life-long affair with the written word and to his continued study of King Arthur, he eventually tried to "translate" Arthur into modern English which Farrar, Straus & Giroux eventually published after his death, in his own introduction for that book Steinbeck wrote, "I remember that words -- written or printed -- were devils, and books, because they gave me pain, were my enemies....And then, one day, an aunt gave me a book and fatuously ignored my resentment. I stared at the black print with hatred, and then, gradually, the pages opened and let me in. The magic happened....I think my sense of right and wrong, my feelings of noblesse oblige, and any thought I may have against the oppressor and for the oppressed came from this secret book". Expected wear.

        Cobble Stone Gardens

(Cherry Valley): Cherry Valley Editions. (1976). The publisher's "silver print" or "blue proof" of this book dedicated to Burroughs' parents. Inscribed by Burroughs in 1984. Together with an undated autograph letter signed from the publisher, Pam [Plymell] offering the recipient manuscript material for the book (not here present) in exchange for money to alleviate financial difficulties. Also together with the softcover edition of the published book, which is fine in wrappers. The proof has some sunning to the rear cover and a 5-digit number written in ink on the front cover; near fine. A unique artifact of the publishing process, and an interesting letter that delineates the materials that were assembled to produce the book, and also sheds some light on the details of publication. First Edition. Softcover. Near Fine.

A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT AND OTHER STORIES

Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, (1976). First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/near fine. 8vo. Blue cloth in original pictorial dust jacket. Near fine in like DJ. Very light toning to spine and touches of edgewear to jacket. Ownership signature to FFEP. On the third page of the acknowledgements, a single name underlined in pen ("Dr. Jarl Dyrud") and rewritten at the top of the page. A few small spots of mild discoloration to front panel, appear to be production error, but unobtrusive. DJ unclipped. Clean and sharp overall. 271pp. “Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters.” True first edition of this modern classic ("adways" for "always," mismatched ISBNs). A surprise hit for this university press, McLean's quiet novel was published in no small part as a favor to retiring professor, but went on to become a sensation through steady word-of-mouth. Basis for the Robert Redford film starring Brad Pitt, Tom Skerritt, Craig Sheffer, and Emily Lloyd.

Circ Cric Cric Trapeze Circus Circus

Portage indiana Chicago Illinois: Joe D'Ambrosio, 1976. Limited Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. As New/Slip Case . 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Joe D'Ambrosio. Trapeze... THINK CIRCUS, is a tour-de-force by master artist, bookmaker and author, the late great Joe D'Ambrosio." I hoped to bridge the gap between the Fine Arts and the Book Arts". This has been masterfully done by using a wonderful eye for color and shapes with an engineering degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology. The artist shows off his printing ability by " using two extremely different type faces which work well together because they have different design functions on the same page. He shows his ingenious feats of engineering in the manner in which he bound the book. " The threads which hold the pages in place exit through the spine of the book and become the straining ropes for the circus tent serigraphed on the front cover. The treads had to be waxed so their 90-degree angles remained rigid in the travel from spine to front cover. Otherwise the book would sag when the book was opened and the tension is removed. Trapeze has 19 fabulous serigraphs each one a work of art on it's own. Most are printed using several colors, red, blue, green, brown yellow gold leaf and others. There are also several black, white and gray prints. This book is #23 of 50 and 7 artist proofs and has been set in 18pt Centaur and 24pt P.T. Barnum ( an idea of printer Elmore Mundell), and printed on Rives BFK hand made paper by the compulsive printer, Portage Indiana. The boards are covered in tent canvas amd the paste downs are of handmade paper. The slipcase is handmade paper over board and allows the book to slip in either way. There is one unique and wonderful print at the beginning of the book dedicated to two of the authors most ardent supporters on the celebration of their wedding. The book is signed by both D'Ambrosio and printer Elmore Mundell. For the discerning collector of Fine Art and Fine Bookmaking this very special item has it all.

        That Time.

Faber and Faber. 1976. 8vo., in original paperback wrappers. A very good copy. First edition inscribed by Beckett to his friend the actor Patrick Magee and his wife Belle, "For Pat and Belle with love from Sam London May 76". Magee's first stage experience in Ireland was with Anew McMaster's touring company, performing the works of Shakespeare. It was here that he first worked with Pinter. He was then brought to London by Tyrone Guthrie for a series of Irish plays. He met Beckett in 1957 and soon recorded passages from the novel, Molloy, and the short story, From an Abandoned Work, for BBC radio. Impressed by "the cracked quality of Magee's distinctly Irish voice," Beckett requested copies of the tapes and wrote Krapp's Last Tape especially for the actor. First produced at the Royal Court Theatre in London on 28 October 1958, the play starred Magee directed by Donald McWhinnie. A televised version with Magee directed by McWhinnie was later broadcast by BBC2 on 29 November 1972. Beckett's biographer Anthony Cronin wrote that "there was a sense in which, as an actor, he had been waiting for Beckett as Beckett had been waiting for him."[

The Biblical Etchings of Marvin Hayes.

Oxmoor House, Birmingham 1976 - First edition. One of 100 numbered copies (#21). Folio (22 x 15 inches) . 8 pp. of printed matter (bifolio and two loose sheets) and 53 original etchings of Old and New Testament scenes, signed, numbered and titled in pencil by Hayes. Prints pulled by Emiliano Sorini from the original copper plates on Arches paper. Each etching in an acid-free polyester film. Text printed by the Trianon Press. Housed in the original calf clamshell case by A. Horowitz of New Jersey (slight crack to upper joint). Mild browning to outer edge of title page (as it was not sleeved). A superb set of these etchings."After graduating from Columbia, Hayes became an award-winning illustrator, with work in Esquire, McCallÕs, Playboy, Redbook, ReaderÕs Digest, Time and Good Housekeeping. Encouraged by Rousseau, he turned to fine art, working primarily in egg tempera and copperplate etchings. Eventually, HayesÕ work would be featured in one-man shows in the United States, Europe and South America and as sought-after acquisitions in museums and private collections. GodÕs Images [the title of the trade publication of these etchings] is HayesÕ piece de resistance, a monumental endeavor that, because of its biblical significance, is sure to endure as an important legacy. Its creation began when representatives of Oxmoor House Inc. of Birmingham, Ala., were in New York and saw HayesÕ work. The publisher planned a new version of the Bible and contracted with Hayes to provide 12 illustrations. ÒThey liked them so much that they signed me up to do 38 more. I actually did 53 all together,Ó Hayes said. ÒThey realized that with the text of the Bible and the etchings, they would have to get hernia insurance to get it out of the stores. So they decided to do the book another way. James Dickey saw the etchings and said, ÔIÕve always wanted to do a treatment of the Bible.ÕÓ (Lamar University). The Oxmoor people had seen the Far Gallery 1976 display of Hayes' Biblical etchings. The Gallery issued an exhibition catalog of the images with the same title as this offering and with an introduction by noted Southern writer James Dickey. In 1977, Oxmoor House commissioned a book containing 53 images and with substantial text James Dickey. This book, God's Images, proved enormously popular and over 1,000,000 copies were sold. In conjunction with the book they commissioned a deluxe set of 100 copies of the engravings and that is what is being here. In 1985, the Vatican Museums in Rome exhibited the works, which remain in the Vatican collection. A complete set of the etchings is a treasured part of the Dishman Art MuseumÕs permanent collection. We can find no copies of this limited edition ever being offered at auction nor any listing on OCLC.
