        The Planets: A Cosmic Pastoral

N.Y.: William Morrow 1976 - 1st printing, with full number line. Book appears unread; unclipped ($6.95) DJ shows only a hint of shelfwear and a faint paperclip impression at top of front panel. The author's first book, written while completing her doctorate with Carl Sagan, the book's dedicatee. "This unique and wonderful book of poems introduces not only a splendid new poet but a whole new adventure in poetry. Its subject is the planets in our solar system, and there are scientifically accurate poems written for each of them, as well as for the moon, the comet Kohoutek, asteroids and strange voyages -- to the stars, the bottom of the sea, through the human body and into the mind." A fascinating work, interspersed with photos. Startlingly uncommon in first edition and, as near as I can tell, never reprinted. 159 pages. U.S. buyers, please email me for a possible discount!         The Collected Essays of Sir Winston Churchill, complete in four volumes

London: Library of Imperial History, 1976. First edition. Hardcover. This exceptional set of Churchill’s Collected Essays is the best-preserved example of the vellum bindings we have offered. This four-volume set is a compilation of most of Churchill's major forewords and periodical contributions, some of which can be otherwise found only in the original periodical publications. The essays are sorted by subject and each of the volumes has a theme - Churchill and War, Churchill and Politics, Churchill and People, and Churchill at Large. In addition to being bibliographically important, The Collected Essays are aesthetically appealing. The production quality is impressive. There were two publisher binding options for The Collected Essays - both sumptuous and one positively extravagant. The lesser of the two was bound in quarter blue morocco and is lovely, but does not match the other 34 volumes of The Collected Works. The more elaborate binding option was full natural calfskin vellum with individual green slipcases, matching the 34 volumes of the preceding Centenary Edition of Churchill's book-length works. The bindings feature Churchill's coat of arms stamped in gilt. The text is printed on special 500-year archival paper and decorated with marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, head and foot bands, and silk ribbon markers. Each volume is protected in a dark green leather slipcase with the Churchill coat of arms embossed in gilt on the front cover. Either binding of The Collected Essays is scarce, but this more elaborate binding is rarely seen alone, as it is essential to completing a uniform full set of The Collected Works. The vellum bindings were meant to tone and age naturally, but often yellow both considerably and unevenly. This particular set is the most attractive we have offered, with unusually bright vellum bindings with minimal toning that, when evident, has served only to highlight the natural features of the binding skins. Condition of the set appears flawless. The bindings are pristine with no signs of handling, perfectly square and tight with sharp corners and no visible wear. The contents are likewise immaculate, crisp and apparently unread, with satin ribbon markers apparently still in the original position placed by the publisher. We find no previous ownership marks. The gilt page edges are vividly bright with no discernible flaws noted. The green leather slipcases remain truly fine, with no bumps or visible signs of use other than some trivial shelfwear to the bottom edges. An exceptional example of an important work, with both compelling contents and striking shelf presence. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A286, Woods/ICS A146(b), Langworth p.355.

Au Seuil 1976 -, Paris - 1 volume. In-8 218 pp. Sous étui bordé. Reliure demi-maroquin fauve à encadrement. Dos lisse avec date dorée au talon. Tête dorée. Couvertures et dos conservés. Reliure signée J. P. MIGUET. Exemplaire très séduisant. EDITION ORIGINALE. Quarter bound with turquoise blue cloth with a white binding. $10.95 price is intact on the DJ flap. The book is just about perfect. Tight, crisp, bright and unread. The only flaw holding the book back from As-New status is a tiny fray hair on the upper corner tip of one panel. For all intents and purposes, it could be trimmed off if you so choose.         Je t'aime moi non plus (Original photograph from the 1976 film)

Paris: Président Films, 1976. Vintage black-and-white borderless single weight still photograph from the French release of the 1976 French film. Three stamps on the verso for Cine-Revue magazine (dated variously between 9/2/76 and 2/3/77), as well as a studio stamp for Président Films, crediting the title, Birkin, Dallesandro, and Gainsbourg. The petite waitress Johnny works and lives in a truck stop, lonely and longing for love. She develops a crush on the garbage truck driver Krassky, although her sleazy boss Boris warns her that Krassky is gay. Krassky likes Johnny too, perhaps because of her boyish physique. But both of them fail to notice the growing jealousy of Krassky's boyfriend Padovan, and trouble sets in. Billy Stevenson of notes in the "A Film Canon" blog: "Serge Gainsbourg directed this film based on his iconic song, and it plays as an extended gloss on that song, an attempt to visualize what was happening during those infamous sighs and pants ... It is a testament to Gainsbourg's commitment to the song, and his own status as sexual outlaw, that he presents us with a film that's just as confronting and titillating some 30 years later. "[Set] against a drifting, rambling desert backdrop, part New Wave, part New Hollywood. Johnny and Krassky's attraction is sexually charged, and yet it doesn't seem to conform to their sexual proclivities...with an audioverite that makes you wonder whether these scenes [might actually] involve real sex. In its yearning to experience sex in every conceivable way--as a gay man, as a lesbian, as a man, as a woman, as pleasure, as pain--[the film] ends up virtualizing it, or at least generalizing it into an undifferentiated sexual access that feels quite incorporeal, a clear forerunner to both the Cinema du Look and art porn movements." 9 x 6.3 inches (22.5 x 16 cm). Near Fine apart from some very faint impressions that come from the original notations on the verso.
