Archive of material relating to this Jazz Musician, Writer & Teacher

1975. A five inch stack of material. Various dates but almost all from the 1970s. Includes: (1) Typescript (with corrections) of Tape One of March 1975 Smithsonian Interview (41 pages); (2) Class Rules for a class on Jazz music taught by Johnson (1p. - several copies); (3) Unfiled but signed Applications for Registration of a Claim to Copyright on songs titled "Blues for Sale" and "You Dirty Old Man" and one or two more; (4) "Ya-Ya" arranged and composed by Johnson (16 pages scored for 17 parts (both together and on separate sheets); (5) Certificates of Registration of a Claim to copyright for "The Blues are here to Stay" and at least 27 other compositions by Johnson ("Constant Music Inc. of which Johnson was President was the copyright holder for most); (6) Pencil draft of a song titled "If you just wouldn't say Goodbye" (1 page); (7) Typed Letter, signed from Felix P. Debrit (1 page, 1962); (8) numerous other compositions or arrangements by Johnson -- some copies, some appear original, and some of which, such as "Earl's Pearls," "Rosetta," and "Deep Forest," are scored for various instruments; (9) 15 photos, mostly smaller photos of Johnson and other musicians (not identified by us); (10) a thin file with some retained copies of letters; and (16) a few miscellaneous pieces of sheet music etc. Albert J. ("Budd") Johnson was born in Dallas, Texas and became involved in various musical groups while growing up. He is best known as a tenor saxophonist and played with Earl Hines, Louis Armstrong, Cab Callaway, Fletcher Henderson, Dizzy Gillespie, and others, although those associations appear to predate the material we offer. In 1969 he and three others formed the JPJ Quartet. It is clear from this material that he was also a composer. Item 2 makes us suspect that he must have also have done some teaching.

        Picked-Up Pieces

New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 1975. First. First edition, trade issue. Fine in fine dustwrapper with a couple of tiny rubbed spots. Inscribed by the author: "for Herb Yellin, Best wishes and Merry Christmas, John Updike 12/17/75." Herb Yellin was the founder and publisher of Lord John Press and the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike "...liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association. .

        My Life.

New York: G.P. Putnam & Sons, 1975. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Golda Meir on the front free endpaper, "In real deep friendship, and love Golda." Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Laid in is a program from the Beverly Hilton Hotel "Dinner with Golda", from December 14, 1975, where the book was signed for a supporter. Golda Meir was elected Prime Minister of Israel on March 17, 1969, after serving as Minister of Labour and Foreign Minister. Israel's first and the world's third woman to hold such an office, she was described as the "Iron Lady" of Israeli politics years before the epithet became associated with British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Former Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion used to call Meir "the best man in the government"; she was often portrayed as the "strong-willed, straight-talking, grey-bunned grandmother of the Jewish people." My Life is "both frank and very revealing of her personality and goals. Her total lack of pretense is especially winning. Meir's practical idealism can be seen in efforts as diverse as the beautification of kibbutzim and her strong advocacy of unemployment benefits. The work that 'most concerned and interested me,' she writes, was 'the translation of socialist principles into the down-to-earth terminology of everyday life.' Although the political events narrated are well known they are recounted with drama and spirit. Don't mistake this for just chicken soup with riposte-noodles: it's a model of its kind and a sure crowd-pleaser" (Kirkus Reviews).

With the dust jacket.Spine lightly rolled, tiny ownership signature to front free endpaper but a nice copy in the minimally sunned dust jacket.         The Philosophy of Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again

New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1975. Second Printing. Hardcover. Very Good. Signed. First edition, second printing lacking the "first edition" statement but bearing the number line B C D E. Inscribed to Dorothy [Blau], with a heart, and signed in full by Andy Warhol (initials were much more common) in black permanent marker on half title page. Blau (1917-2014) was an influential Miami art dealer known as the Godmother of POP. She helped propel Warhol to prominence in the international art world, also championing the work of Keith Haring and Christo and Jean Claude, among others. Warhol acknowledged his debt to her, taking her portrait twice, something he did for no one else. Near Fine with sunning and light wear to edges. In a Near Fine dust jacket with light wear. An excellent association between the most famous Pop artist of all time and the dealer sometimes referred to as "The Godmother of Pop.
