        Proofs: Laura's birth announcement

Perishable Press [Mt. Horeb, WI]: Perishable Press, 1975. Sheets laid into a manila envelope labelled in Hamady's handwriting. Clean and crisp; some pages with markings as above.. 8vo (26.7 cm, 10.5"). [10] ff.; illus. Unusual and interesting ephemera, offering some insight into the design and printing process of the proprietor of the Perishable Press, as well as a nice example of his inimitably quirky style: 10 proofsheets of Hamady's announcement of his daughter Laura's birth, reflecting the printer's experimentations with layout and color as well as his personal joy. Some of these proofsheets bear editorial marks in red ink, while one has the "Printer's Devil" header on an affixed slip of paper; several have the text printed in variant color schemes. The sheets are printed on Plover Fineweave paper with the text set in Sabon Antiqua. At the head of each is a print of a nicely rendered pen-and-ink drawing of the Hamady farm (where "Mother Father & Daughter are well and thriving"), done by Jack Beal ("Laura's Uncle Jack").

Support the MPLA in Angola Original Poster - San Francisco Poster Brigade, People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola

Wilfred Owen Brigade San Francisco: Wilfred Owen Brigade, 1975. Original Print. Very Good +. Wilfred Owen Brigade; Rachael Romero. Support the MPLA in Angola Original Poster. San Francisco: Wilfred Owen Brigade, 1975. Linocut, black ink on heavy white paper, image measures approx. 13 by 22 1/2-inches, the paper measures 17 1/2 by 23-inches, light red stamp of the “Wilfred Owen Brigade” in the lower right margin. Pin holes at each corner of the print and one at center top. Creases on upper right corner and an old repaired tear and tiny nick on left edge (none affect image). A remarkably well-preserved copy of this truly scarce graphic. This block-print was created by Rachael Romero in 1975, the same year she co-founded the San Francisco Poster Brigade. The SFPG was originally called the Wilfred Owen Brigade after the poet who was killed in action during the First World War, but, as Romero says, “no-one knew who Wilfred Owen was so soon changed the name to San Francisco Poster Brigade.” The SFPB existed from 1975 – 1982, though Romero remains an active artist engaged in social issues. The MPLA – the leftist People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola – Labour Party – has ruled Angola since the country’s independence from Portugal in 1975. During 1975, when this posted was created, the United States was heavily involved in supporting the MPLA’s opposition during the Angolan Civil War, which lasted until 2002.

        SHADE

Seattle: Mill Mountain Press, 1975. First Edition. Wraps. Near Fine. 8vo. Plain printed wraps. Near fine. Drawings by Ginny Crouch. Scarce collection from this cult poet, whose significance and importance have only grown since his 1978 suicide. Shade was the fourth book of Stanford's to be published by Mill Mountain Press. "Second edition" stated, though in fact this is the first, the previous "1973" edition noted with Stanford's other titles in this book never having actually been published. Almost certainly a bit of bibliographic mischief perpetrated by the poet. Additionally, copyright page notes "Limited Edition," though no limitation stated. But in our experience probably the scarcest of the seven titles published during his lifetime. Though we are aware of sales of each of his other books, we know of none for this title. OCLC shows just four holdings. Rare work from arguably the most original poetic voice to emerge from the 1970's.

1975. Photo. Illus. by Henri Cartier-Bresson. Très bon. Aucune reliure.

Moise and the World of Reason

New York: Simon and Schuster. (1975). First. First edition. Fine in a slightly age-toned, else fine dustwrapper. Inscribed by Williams to actress Ruth Ford: "To Ruth with my heart on my sleeve. Love, Tennessee." In Williams' Memoirs he refers to Ford as "the wise and lovely actress, Ruth Ford, who seems to have been born with more worldly wisdom than I have accumulated even at this point in life." Ford, the Mississippi-born sister of surrealist author Charles Henri Ford, was a beautiful model and actress, first in Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre, and later in films and theater. Notably, she starred on Broadway in Jean Paul Sartre's No Exit in 1946, under the direction of John Huston (the last of five Broadway plays he directed). Her apartment in the Dakota became a salon for authors such as Williams, Edward Albee, Terrence McNally, and Truman Capote. A chance encounter between Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents in her Manhattan living room led to their collaboration, with her Dakota-neighbor Leonard Bernstein, on West Side Story. Similarly, she brought together Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight to create the celebrated stories of Eloise, the little girl who lived at the Plaza.Ford is well known also for her long friendship with William Faulkner, which began with her dating his brother Dean in the early 1930s. Faulkner was openly smitten with Ford for many years. He wrote his experimental 1951 title Requiem for a Nun, a sequel to his early and controversial novel Sanctuary, with her in mind. He further declared, to the consternation of his agent and publisher, that it was her dramatic property (Requiem for a Nun was a mixture of stage play and novel). Stage production of the title stalled for years, partly because Faulkner's experimental drama did not lend itself to live theatre, and partly because the producers were unsure of Ford's suitability. Faulkner was adamant that it was her dramatic property, and in 1959 she adapted the play herself and starred in its London production opposite her second husband, Zachary Scott. Her stage version received enthusiastic reviews in both London and New York, but did not fare so well with audiences and closed after a short run on Broadway. Ford continued to act on both stage and screen well into the 1980s. She passed away in 2009 at the age of 98. A wonderful inscription and nice association. .

        Bricklin II Concept Art

1975. Mixed media on paper. Signed, dated, and numbered "#02". 10 x 22 1/2 inches. Framed. Alexander Sarantos Tremulis (1914-1991) was the designer of the production version of the 1948 Tucker Torpedo and was America's most original design theorist of the post-war era. He was born in Chicago and without any training in drawing or engineering joined the design team of Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg in 1933. He was chief stylist when the company failed in 1937. He worked for GM, Chrysler and Custom Motors in Beverly Hills, which designed unique cars for movie stars. During World War II, he worked for the Air Force designing aircraft, and in the process drew what may have been the first visualizations of extra-terrestrial transport: flying saucers. After the war, Tremulis worked with Preston Tucker, and later for Ford. He formed his own consulting firm in the 1960's. This quite beautiful design and other similar ones were made for the ill-fated Bricklin car company, which existed from 1974 to 1976, and whose demise had nothing to do with Tremulis's designs. He was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1982.
