Paulette.

Oeuvre originale

        CONFESSIONS OF A CRAP ARTIST

New York: Entwhistle Books,. 1975. cloth.. A fine copy without dust jacket as issued. (#109833). First edition. 1000 copies printed of which this is one of a handful of copies signed by Dick, but not numbered. This variant has the "first edition" statement on the copyright page. In Dick's opinion, this novel was "easily the best of all his mainstream efforts." Written in 1959 in the midst of Dick's "exceedingly ambitious -- and totally unsuccessful -- attempt to break into the mainstream-novel market ... Graceful, wry, vulnerable, pessimistic and wise, they are novels less good only than the best of PKD's intense prime, which began immediately [with TIME OUT OF JOINT]." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 328.

        Manuscript]: Jaguar Skies

1975 - Manuscript. Photo-mechanically reproduced loose sheets in original mailing envelope. About fine, the envelope shows some modest wear, but is sound and intact. Loose sheets with a title with a hand-drawn decorative border by McClure of a double winged Apollo head. Cover sheet with his printed name, address, and phone number, Inscribed by McClure to Gary Snyder: "May 15 -- 75. Gary, here's the book -- about 95% of the way it will be. There will be minor changes in poems. This is direct hand/shoulder work with the topology of September Blackberries. All thanks to you. Your comrade, Michael." The mailing envelope has been reinforced at the seams by McClure (the postmarkings are on the masking tape) and is addressed to Snyder in Nevada City, California, with McClure's return address in San Francisco. The printed sheets are essentially clean and reveal little work, except for an added line in pencil on the last poem. The book was published by New Directions in the same year. A wonderful association between two of the founding poets of the Beat Generation.

        Bricklin II Concept Art

1975. Mixed media on paper. Signed, dated and numbered "#04". 10 x 23 1/2 inches. Framed. 20 3/4 x 30 3/4 inches. "..certainly one of, and arguably, the greatest automobile designer of all time." (Coachbuilt) Alexander Sarantos Tremulis (1914-1991) was the designer of the production version of the 1948 Tucker Torpedo and was America's most original design theorist of the post-war era. He was born in Chicago and without any training in drawing or engineering joined the design team of Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg in 1933. He was chief stylist when the company failed in 1937. He worked for GM, Chrysler and Custom Motors in Beverly Hills, which designed unique cars for movie stars. During World War II, he worked for the Air Force designing aircraft, and in the process drew what may have been the first visualizations of extra-terrestrial transport: flying saucers. After the war, Tremulis worked with Preston Tucker and later Ford. He formed his own consulting firm in the 1960's. This quite beautiful design and other similar ones were made for the ill-fated Bricklin car company, which existed from 1974 to 1976, and whose demise had nothing to do with Tremulis's designs. He was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1982.

An Archive of Hand-decorated Cards, Letters and Envelopes

1967-1975. A collection of approximately 120 large format, handmade and heavily hand-decorated postcards and letters, mostly with envelopes. Various dates from 1967-1975, all by Mrs. Brightman of Akron, Ohio to Ned Osthaus of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Curiously, despite Brightman's many names, and indications in the correspondence that she was a performing artist of some kind in her youth, we can find little about her, or Mr. Osthaus, beyond some slim evidence of their existence. The hand-illustrated correspondence displays a unique confluence of patriotic fervor, Biblical observance, political opinion, and boundless artistic energy. Many of the cards are in commemoration of holidays real (Christmas, St. Patrick's Day, Thanksgiving, Bastille Day, Passover, Columbus Day, Easter, July 4th) and obscure or imagined (Kent State Massacre Memorial Day, Mayflower Day, Law Day, Our Martyred United States of North American Mr. and Mrs. President's Day, St. Bartholomew's Massacre Day, Ten Commandments Day); others are dedicated to a theme: the Holy Grail, the Boer War, the Watergate Hearings, the Vietnam War, the Constitution, certain types of plants. The content and accompanying art are highly eccentric, very entertaining, and occasionally slightly addled. Many are patriotic or moralistic in tone. Virtually all of the cards and letters are heavily painted, as are most of the envelopes. Several of the envelopes are made from busily patterned wrapping paper, some of which are additionally embellished, some not.In a July 4th card she explains her many names: "Note: During my early public career I was known as Margaret Quincy. During my later public career I was known as Margaret Stanton. Margaret Zenie was given to me at my birth and oddly, the Negroes in the South called me 'Ladybird.' I performed a High Swan Dive for them, especially, every Saturday Night whenever I played in the South."In one card she explains her family lineage, after having read Profiles in Courage: "I was surprised to find Secretary of War Stanton still labeled 'a villain"... in fact, he is my great grandfather... [his] wife... was an Allen... and she owned almost all of New York City, which my Grandfather Alexander Stanton inherited, and lost to the Astors..."She expresses a deep interest in culture, and a recurrent and not so subtle dislike for the British, and especially the Royal Family. In a letter dated in 1974 she decries the state of literacy in the country: "It is not difficult for me to understand why you are having trouble trying to buy the book you wish to send me. For, I have long been troubled about our book stores, and libraries... about a week ago the 'To Tell the Truth' program on television had a man on their program who was from Great Britain, and who stated 'he owned the largest second hand book store in the world'. And this man stated the 'he had been buying millions upon millions of our books, classics included.' And to prove what this man had to say -- our largest second hand book store has vanished which means the British Queen Elizabeth II is plotting to reduce this nation of United States of North America to a nation of illiterates. Too, I have been discovering books missing from my own library, and books that have been replaced with important information deleted." In a St. Patrick's Day card she states: "Bless the American Irish for keeping us reminded that the Irish are always Irish -- and not British." In another card she is deeply disturbed about a rumored plan to obliterate the head of Teddy Roosevelt from Mount Rushmore. The art, done mostly with poster paint and watercolors on wrapping paper or construction paper, while displaying only a modicum of talent, does reveal an eccentric world view, and would qualify as completely unadulterated naive art. This archive is clearly a product of its time as it displays one individuals attempts to reconcile "old time" values with the moral and political quagmire of the Vietnam era. However, this dichotomy combined with the form itself, bright colors, and artistic energy likely inspired to some extent by the pop-art of the 1960s, make this archive not of-a-kind, but rather very much a singular artistic interpretation of an era. .

Linear Programming and Extensions: A Report prepared for United States Air Force Project RAND.Santa Monica: The RAND Corporation, August 1963.

Extremely rare issue (probably the first; preceding the Princeton issue from the same year) of this classic, also known as 'the bible' of linear programming. Dantzig was the recipient of the first Von Neumann Theory Prize "for his work on linear programming". When it was announced that the 1975 Nobel Prize in Economics would be awarded jointly to Kantorovich and Koopmans "for their contributions to the theory of optimum allocation of resources", the later wrote the first that he would deny the prize, as a protest towards the exclusion of Dantzig.

"This book, by the 'father of linear programming' and the inventor of the simplex method, has served generations of Operations Research analysts and students as a source and text for both theory and applications. It includes most of Dantzig's theoretical and applied developments in linear programming and its extensions up to that time." (Gass & Assad: Timeline of Operations Research, p.140).

. 8vo (229 x 153 mm), original printed wrappers, pp. [i-ii] iii-xii, 621 [5:blank]. Previous owner's signature in pencil to front wrapper, very light wear to extremeties, in all a very fine copy in its original state. Rare

This copy is inscribed "Special New Year '76 edition" and signed by Piene on the title-page to the editor and coordinator of the exhibit Susan E. Cohen. The artist worked throughout this copy using several different techniques, such as tearing, burning and scorching leaves, as well as drawing with colored inks, to make this a unique copy. The final drawing of two large eyes extends over two pages (11 x 17.5") and is signed again at the lower right corner. Piene (German, b. 1928) was on one of the founders of Group Zero (Cologne), one of many associations of kinetic artists formed in the late 1950s and early 60s. His fascination with light as an expansive medium has been evident in much of his work, as it is in the fire (a form of light) and smoke pictures illustrated in this catalogue. His progressive alterations and additions to this copy have a kinetic feel.
