1975. Paperback. (PIENE, Otto). COHEN, Susan E. OTTO PIENE: PAINTINGS, GOUACHE, DRAWINGS. [Catalogue of an exhibition at the] Hayden Gallery and the Center for Advanced Visual Studies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, November 7-December 7, 1975. [Cambridge, MA]: MIT Committee on the Visual Arts, 1975. [4],52 pp. Illustrated with black & white reproductions. 4to., color pictorial wrappers. Housed in a custom made clamshell box. This copy is inscribed "Special New Year '76 edition" and signed by Piene on the title-page to the editor and coordinator of the exhibit Susan E. Cohen. The artist worked throughout this copy using several different techniques, such as tearing, burning and scorching leaves, as well as drawing with colored inks, to make this a unique copy. The final drawing of two large eyes extends over two pages (11 x 17.5") and is signed again at the lower right corner. Piene (German, b. 1928) was on one of the founders of Group Zero (Cologne), one of many associations of kinetic artists formed in the late 1950s and early 60s. His fascination with light as an expansive medium has been evident in much of his work, as it is in the fire (a form of light) and smoke pictures illustrated in this catalogue. His progressive alterations and additions to this copy have a kinetic feel.

(New Jersey: Carolingian Press, 1975). Square octavo. (86)ff. of various papers, most being frenchfold. From an edition of 25 copies signed by Burgess, this is copy number one. Burgess' concrete poetry is printed letterpress from zinc plates, which were produced from a typewritten text. This unusual, striking book was written by Burgess as a result of her study of Eastern philosophy and religion and is her only published book. It is beautifully conceived, using more than forty varieties of Japanese papers, including leaf papers with clover and ferns. The text is a series of meditations delicately integrated with the typography and papers to lead to a peaceful calm for the reader - a motionless "sill." The book is arranged on four different levels: by color, by country, by thought, and by number. Each country is represented by a colored sheet and Japanese lace papers. The blue section is India, followed by the yellow of China, the red of Tibet, and finally, the green of Japan. A moving and impressive book by an artist who works primarily as a sculptor. Bound oriental-style with gold threads and housed in a black folding box, each side of which is silk-lined in a different primary color. On the cover is a gold painted circle, the symbol of eternal light. The box is clasped with mother-of-pearl. A fine copy. 12-page prospectus laid in.

Original manuscript poems, prepared for a reading at the Cheltenham Literary Festival

[c.1975]. 8 pages foolscap, staple to one corner. Housed in a black cloth chemise. Pin holes to second corner throughout, folded once but in very good shape. On the rectos are typescript fair copies of Crow poetry: five poems in total taken variously from Crow and From the Life and Songs of the Crow. On the versos of five of these leaves are original holograph poems by Hughes each designated "Commentary for Alan" [Hancock the organiser of the festival]. These commentaries are quintessential Hughes, classic epigrammatic turns at once clear and then mystical. They include a final thought, "The Moon that keeps / Man's guilt awake / Lights the Law / Owl cannot break". None of these have been published.

Seattle: Mill Mountain Press, 1975. First Edition. Wraps. Near Fine. 8vo. Plain printed wraps. Near fine. Drawings by Ginny Crouch. Scarce collection from this cult poet, whose significance and importance have only grown since his 1978 suicide. Shade was the fourth book of Stanford's to be published by Mill Mountain Press. "Second edition" stated, though in fact this is the first, the previous "1973" edition noted with Stanford's other titles in this book never having actually been published. Almost certainly a bit of bibliographic mischief perpetrated by the poet. Additionally, copyright page notes "Limited Edition," though no limitation stated. But in our experience probably the scarcest of the seven titles published during his lifetime. Though we are aware of sales of each of his other books, we know of none for this title. OCLC shows just four holdings. Rare work from arguably the most original poetic voice to emerge from the 1970's.

        Women Are Beautiful

New York: Light Gallery / Farrar, Straus & Giroux, (1975). Bottom corners bumped, else near fine in a near fine jacket, lightly and evenly soiled. While signed copies of this title appear intermittently, this is the first legitimate association copy I have seen.. First Edition. Small oblong quarto. The hardcover issue. Essay by Helen Gary Bishop. A fine association copy, SIGNED by Winogrand and briefly INSCRIBED to Arnold and Augusta Newman. Winogrand's best and most sought after book, with many of his iconic images of the seventies. Interestingly, both Roth and Parr omitted this title in favor of Winogrand's first book, The Animals. (Open Book 306-307, Auer 588).

        Women Are Beautiful

New York: Light Gallery Editions, 1975. First Edition. Softcover.. Near Fine. Oblong 8vo, 96pp. Printed wraps as issued. 84 Black & White plates. Minor wear to corners, else near fine. More images available on request. Scarce in such a good condition. Compiled by Szarkowski. 85 photographic plates depicting women with Winogrand's characteristic spontaneity and "inspired amateurism." "Winogrand was an innovator and one of the most dazzlingly reckless members of what John Szarkowski called photography's 'new generation of primitives...' his style appeared to be no style--effortless, loose, and as uncalculated as a snapshot" (Roth, The Book of 101 books: Seminal Photographs Of The 20th Century). Beautiful book that's part street style and part photodocumentary, shot between the early sixties and 1975. Highly recommended.

        The Seen (First Edition)

San Francisco: Pasteurize Press / Zephyrus Image, 1975. First Edition. First Edition. An offprint of Brakhage's remarks following a screening of his film, "The Text of Light," at the San Francisco Art Institute, Nov 18, 1974. & & A variant of the first edition described in the Zephyrus Image bibliography by Alastair Johnston, this copy without the inner printed Mylar wrapper and printed envelope. Probably the rarest Brakhage item extant, and an extraordinary example, given nature of the fragile wrapper. Not in OCLC. & & Johnston's entry for this title notes "After the film screened at Canyon Cinematheque in 1975, Holbrook Teter of Zephyrus Image decided to publish a transcript of Brakhage's accompanying talk. Teter said: 'Stan Brakhage showed a movie of light refracted in a glass ashtray. You couldn't tell it was an ashtray. The whole movie was just the shifting light in the ashtray for a very lengthy time. After he showed the movie he talked about his own life and development as an artist and what he had to say was so turned on, so accurate and beautiful. Somebody had taped it so we transcribed it and put out the book.'" & & "Teter originally proposed the title "Seeing is Believing" which Brakhage rejected as having religious connotations and 'then anyway my concern is to pry words such as 'seeing' FREE from those traditional associations of it which would limit a person.'"& & "Upon reviewing the tape to proof-read his first galley, Teter found that the Cinematheque transcriber had edited rather wildly, leaving out chunks and had even interpolated parts from another Brakhage speech at the University of California Berkeley's Pacific Film Archive. Teter re-transcribed the speech, and "The Seen" first appeared in print in late 1975." & & Brakhage was thrilled, and wrote in a letter to Teter, "Bless you for this beauty," and said that of all the books that had been inspired from his films, that Teter's was "easily the most beautiful of all." The Criterion Collection released a collection of 26 key works by Brakhage, titled "By Brakhage," in 2003, allowing frame-by-frame digital examination of his work for the first time. In 2010, Criterion released a second volume, curated by his wife, with an additional 30 films.& & Fine in saddle-stitched, reflective wrappers.

Nihon No Mayakuka / Narcotic Damage in Japan

Nagoya: Nisshin-sha, 1975. A few small label remnants as is typical with Japanese books; a near fine copy in blue boards as issued in the publisher's plain card slipcase (few tape shadows, but very little wear).. First Edition. Thick quarto. Limited to 500 copies. The third and last book by Kazuo Kenmochi documenting drug use in Japan. This book includes images from his first two books (Narcotic Photographic Document and Narcotic '61-'72) as well as new images not found in either of the earlier works. The book has a long section of text, also by Kenmochi, and must rank as one of the most comprehensive books on drug addiction ever published. Amidst the reportage (there are many images of drug seizures, photographed in a style not unlike Boltanski or Sol Lewitt), there are incredible pictures of addicts in varying states of disarray.
