        Ugly Rumours

London: Allen & Unwin. (1975). His first book, a novel set in Vietnam, about a Special Forces lieutenant and a sergeant serving as advisor to a Vietnamese Infantry Division. Not published in this country, and the author has pointedly refused to list it among his "previous publications" on his later books or allowed it to be reprinted. His memoir, In Pharaoh's Army, alludes somewhat disparagingly to the novel he was writing while he was serving in Vietnam, presumably Ugly Rumours. Wolff is one of the most highly regarded short story writers in America, winner of the PEN Faulkner Award, and his memoir This Boy's Life was made into a memorable movie. A novel by him on the pivotal event of his generation -- the Vietnam war -- is a notable contribution to contemporary literature, regardless of the author's opinion of its quality. This copy is signed by Wolff, and scarce thus, presumably because of his feelings detailed above. A fine copy in a very near fine dust jacket with some shallow scratching to the lamination. First Edition. Hardcover.

Archive of Mail Art By the Glass Menagerie Sent to The Great Building Crack-up

Np, 1975-77. *Previously unknown mail art from the "Son of Coum", aka "Colette P-Orridge", aka Colin Naylor.*& & Approximately 60 items, mostly collages on postcard with rubberstamp and hand-colored elements. A couple of the collages have loose elements from glue being dried, but mostly near fine. & & & Colin Naylor was, along with Genesis P-Orridge of Coum, the editor of a large pot-boiler art survey book entitled Contemporary Artists. P-orridge had started working as Naylor's assistant on the project in February of 1975 at the age of 25, his first full time employment. While the compilation of the encyclopedia was probably very tedious, it did allow Naylor and P-Orridge the chance to contact many artists - which is perhaps how Naylor got in touch with fellow travelers the Great Building Crack-Up, Rhett And Bob Delford. Also, P-Orridge and Naylor created at least one fictional artist in the encyclopedia, one Ted Glass – making the encyclopedia an intervention as artist book, similar to some of the actions of Cosey. This fictional Ted Glass would soon come to life in a troubling way for P-Orridge. & & In October of 1975 Genesis faced a court case from the police for sending indecent material through the mail; one of the postcards held as evidence of this was a piece of mail art sent to the same fictional Ted Glass. P-Orridge was eventually found guilty, and was fined 120 pounds; the legal fees were even higher, and from then on his mail was subject to inspection by the police. There are several references to both the investigation and the trial as it occurred here, including an account of a postal investigator perhaps becoming fascinated with Coum and possibly even involved somehow in the mail project, as well as a postcard soliciting contributions for P-Orridge's defense. & & & & & . . . an undated, but probably early letter, perhaps the beginning of this correspondence, spells out the sometimes complicated arrangements between the The Glass Menagerie and members of Coum. "To avoid too much confusion: Genesis is alias 'Crystal' and singly or collectively with his Girlfriend Cosey plus a varying number of others he is also known as 'Coum.' Colin is also known as 'Colette' (sometimes an adopted son-of-coum, and known as 'colette p-orridge'.. ho hum. also capable of alter-egoing into the persona or concept of ‘thee glass menagerie’ (origins too obscure to go into at the moment, but clues figure throughout most mail-type correspondence)."& & Some of the collages are sophisticated, many making use of a striking framing motif of upraised hands, and incorporating what appears to be pornographic clippings, artwork of other individuals. & & Also a tantalizing mention of Ray Johnson threatening legal action, via famous NY art world attorney Jerry Ordover, for sending him "naughty nudie postcards." There are passing references to Marc Camille Chaimowicz, Peter Frank, Barbara Reise, A. D. Coleman et al. & & [Ford 5.4, 6.10-11. ]&

        Memoirs

Doubleday & Company, Garden City 1975 - First edition. Fine in about fine dustwrapper with a couple very short tears. Inscribed by Williams to actress Ruth Ford: "To Ruth: You were always right! Love, Tennessee." In the book Williams' refers to Ford as "the wise and lovely actress, Ruth Ford, who seems to have been born with more worldly wisdom than I have accumulated even at this point in life." Ford, the Mississippi-born sister of surrealist author Charles Henri Ford, was a beautiful model and actress, first in Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre, and later in films and theater. Notably, she starred on Broadway in Jean Paul Sartre's *No Exit* in 1946, under the direction of John Huston (the last of five Broadway plays he directed). Her apartment in the Dakota became a salon for authors such as Williams, Edward Albee, Terrence McNally, and Truman Capote. A chance encounter between Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents in her Manhattan living room led to their collaboration, with her Dakota-neighbor Leonard Bernstein, on *West Side Story*. Similarly, she brought together Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight to create the celebrated stories of *Eloise*, the little girl who lived at the Plaza.Ford is well known also for her long friendship with William Faulkner, which began with her dating his brother Dean in the early 1930s. Faulkner was openly smitten with Ford for many years. He wrote his experimental 1951 title *Requiem for a Nun*, a sequel to his early and controversial novel *Sanctuary*, with her in mind. He further declared, to the consternation of his agent and publisher, that it was her dramatic property (*Requiem for a Nun* was a mixture of stage play and novel). Stage production of the title stalled for years, partly because Faulkner's experimental drama did not lend itself to live theatre, and partly because the producers were unsure of Ford's suitability. Faulkner was adamant that it was her dramatic property, and in 1959 she adapted the play herself and starred in its London production opposite her second husband, Zachary Scott. Her stage version received enthusiastic reviews in both London and New York, but did not fare so well with audiences and closed after a short run on Broadway. Ford continued to act on both stage and screen well into the 1980s. She passed away in 2009 at the age of 98. A wonderful inscription and nice association. See this book in 3D on our site. Like most ukiyo-e artists, however, he also produced a number of prints and paintings depicting Kabuki actors and related subjects, many of them promotional materials for the theaters. He also produced a number of shunga, or erotic images.
