Included is an original woodblock print by Karhu, signed, and tipped in. With 134 plates in full, bold color and with 77 B&W illustrations. Each page of color plates with a pristine tissue guard. The book in a protective, heavy-duty chemise. The chemise in oxblood-colored cloth and blindstamped Japanese characters. The chemise with two bone (or bone-like) clasps. Trivial spotting to the inner sides of the spines of the chemise. The spotting has not transferred. A Fine copy in a Near Fine chemise. About gift quality. Scarce in any condition. The book is believed to showcase all the artist's known woodblock prints through 1975. Many more were to follow. Karhu (1927-2007) was born in Minnesota of non-Japanese heritage. (The artist's name is often rendered in Japanese as Kahu or Good Wind.) He graduated in 1952 from the Minneapolis School of Art. He lived in Japan much of his adult life. His woodblock prints often depict scenes of typically Japanese buildings with strong pattern and color. Although his orientation is traditional, he has mastered the arts of carving and printing rather than relying completely on artisans as ukiyo-e artists did.. First Edition. Cloth. Fine/Fine. Illus. by Karhu, Clifton. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall.

Homage to Michelangelo (Omaggio a Michelangelo)

Fondation Bruckmann Stiftung 1975 - On rare occasion, one encounters a portfolio that is not simply a series of illustrations, or works surrounding a central theme. It is a cross section that summarizes an entire time and place. In its totality, it represents a self-contained collection, rather than a portfolio. "Homage to Michelangelo" is such a work. The portfolio was created in 1975, and published by the Fondation Bruckmann Stiftung, Munich, in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Michelangelo. It contains 13 original, hand signed and numbered artworks (some are etchings and others are lithographs), in an edition of 200. Each work is contained within a paper folder, with text printed in Italian and artist's biography printed in English, French, and German. The portfolio measures 33.5 x 24.5 inches, and the illustrations measure (in the main) 22" x 30". The original graphics consist of works by: Horst Antes (born 1936), "Portrait Michelangelo" (cat.# Lutze 775 2A); Jorge Castillo (born 1933); Emilio Greco (1913-1995); Renato Guttoso (1912-1987); David Hockney (born 1937), "Homage to Michelangelo" (cat.# SAC 173); Jean Robert Ipousteguy (1920-2006); Giacomo Manzu (1908-1991); Marino Marini (1901-1980), "Omaggio a Michelangelo" (cat.# G.325); Andre Masson (1896-1987); Henry Moore (1898-1986), "Four Reclining Figures" (cat.# C. 333); Sir Eduardo Paolozzi (1924-2005); Fritz Wotruba (1907-1975); and Paul Wunderlich (1927-2010), (at # Riediger 506). The example on offer includes each original graphic in excellent condition. The original beige, linen covered portfolio case with green leather front panel shows wear i.e., scuffs and scratches however, it has maintained the contents in excellent condition. It is extremely rare to find this portfolio complete in that most examples were dispersed, with artworks sold separately. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (From A to B & Back Again)

New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Publishers, 1975 First edition, first printing. Signed by Warhol on the half-title page: "Andy Warhol / [rule] / AW". Publisher's red-orange cloth and yellow boards, lettered in black and white; in the original black dust jacket designed by Herb Lubalin, with a photograph of the author by Philippe Halsman to the front panel, lettered in white and yellow. Fine book; dust jacket with a spot of faint soiling to the front panel, else fine. An excellent copy, signed by the author. The Philosophy of Andy Warhol is Warhol's second commercially published book, created after he had been established as a major 20th century artist and international celebrity. Although it was professionally published, The Philosophy of Andy Warhol is only marginally more serious than his art books; the text is abstract, more a collection of scattered reflections and thoughts than a cohesive narrative. It covers a variety of subjects, including Warhol's thoughts on his childhood, his life as a celebrity, art, New York, life, and love. The Philosophy of Andy Warhol was largely ghostwritten by Warhol's secretary Pat Hackett, to whom the book is dedicated; in his subsequent commercial publications, Warhol included Hackett as a co-author.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

        Lucifer

[Original lithographic poster in color]. published by the Martha Graham Dance Company, New York, printed by Maeght, Paris, 1975. (Mourlot, 1050). Copy #51 of 75, signed by Miro in pencil, on handmade paper (there were also 500 unsigned copies, with ìlettersî published as an advertising poster for the performance). Mourlot. The Lithographs of Joan Miro, #1050; Picazo. The Posters of Joan Miro, #86. 31" x 21". Image/sheet size 30 3/4 x 22 1/4 in. (78.0 x 56.4 cm), unmatted, Deckled edges. Miro created this lithograph as an advertising poster for the modern ballet Lucifer performed by the Martha Graham Dance Company, featuring Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev as guest artists. Lucifer premiered June 19, 1975 at The Uris Theater in New York City as the main feature of The Martha Graham Gala. In Martha Grahamís words, ìMany people have asked me why I did Lucifer with Rudolf Nureyev. Lucifer is the bringer of light. When he fell from grace he mocked God. He became half god, half man. As half man, he knew menís fears, anguish, and challenges. He became the god of light. Any artist is the bringer of light. Thatís why I did Lucifer with Nureyev. Heís a god of light. And Margot Fonteyn was such a glorious complement to him at it. Luminous as night. When I first saw Margot Fonteyn she was a great and beautiful figure.î (Unidentified interview with Martha Graham, 1975.) Fonteyn provides background as to the Premiere of Lucifer in 1975. ìIt was certainly a star occasion. Tickets for the performance went on sale from $10,000 down to $50. Fans wore Martha, Margot, Rudi buttons. Among other things the Gala may have been a sort of official celebration of the marriage between classical ballet and modern dance.... Martha dominated her Gala from a Chinese chair beside the proscenium arch, where she announced each ballet. [The fashion designer] Halston made the Lucifer costumes.î It was the first performance for Fonteyn without toe shoes. (Margot Fonteyn Autobiography, Knopf, 1976) Provenance: Through the family of former Rhode Island governor and United States senator John Orlando Pastore (1907-2000).

Fine in a near fine second-issue dust jacket, with Father Cody. A very bright copy. In 'Salem's Lot, the thing that really scared me was not vampires but the town in the daytime, the town that was empty, knowing that there were things in closets, that there were people tucked under beds, under the concrete pilings of all those trailers. And all the time I was writing that, the Watergate hearings were pouring out of the TV… I was thinking about secrets, things that have been hidden and were being dragged out into the light." "King's ability, through the overlayering of seemingly irrelevant mundane details, to generate a sense of wrongness found its first full flowering in this novel" (Clute & Grant, 537).

Erste Ausgabe. (Zitat) - Hier ei [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
