        The Vermont Notebook.

Los Angeles: Black Sparrow Press, 1975 - Octavo. Original patterned cloth backed boards, title label to spine, white paper over boards with title and illustration to front, brown endpapers. With the original acetate wrapper. A fine copy, with the acetate wrapper chipped at the head. 47 full page black and white illustrations by Brainard. With an original Brainard pen-and-ink drawing, signed "Brainard - 74", bound in as issued. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by Ashbery to his friend the artist R. B. Kitaj (1932-2007), of number B of 26 lettered copies signed by Ashbery and Brainard, bound by Earle Gray, and with an original signed ink drawing by Brainard (dated 1974) bound in. There were also 250 copies signed by Ashbery and Brainard, also hardbound by not so attractively by Earle Gray, and without the original drawing. The inscription on the half-title, "for R. B. Kitaj, love, John Ashbery, London, April 18 1975" is in the year of publication. Kitaj and Ashbery were close friends and collaborators: Kitaj had painted the work used as the cover for Ashbery's Housboat Days (1957), and Ashbery published laudatory criticisms of Kitaj's work, culminating in Thames & Hudson's 1983 publication Kitaj: Paintings, Drawings, Pastels, authored by Ashbery. Ashbery's Pulitzer prize-winning poem "Self Portrait in a Convex Mirror" (inspired by Parmigiano and written in 1974) was in 1984 issued by the Arion Press in tribute to Ashbery, with illustrations by a small selection of his artist friends including Kitaj. He later executed an etched portrait of Ashbery in 1997. Artist Joe Brainard was an artist of the New York school and notable for his collaborations with its poets. His memoir I Remember (1970) is a cult classic, praised by Paul Auster as "one of the few totally original books I have ever read." [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

- Einband gering lichtrandig. Knapp beschnitten, stellenweise gering fleckig. A. G. von Olenhusen, "Der Weg vom Manuscript zum gedruckten Text " (Lengwil 1997), S. 92-93, Nr. 4.

THE PHILOSOPHY OF ANDY WARHOL (FROM A TO B AND BACK AGAIN)

London: Cassell / A Michael Dempsey Book. 1975. First UK edition, first printing. First UK edition, first printing. An exceptional association copy. Inscribed by Warhol, with an original drawing. Original green cloth with black titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. A very good copy, the binding firm and square with some bumping and a little staining at the spine tips. The contents are clean throughout with light toning at the text block edge. Complete with the rubbed and nicked original dustwrapper which has a few light marks to the spine. Inscribed in black marker around a full page drawing of a Campbell's Pea soup can “To Robert F / with love / Andy Warhol / London 1975”. The recipient is Warhol's London art dealer and pivotal figure in the London cultural scene of the mid sixties and beyond Robert Fraser. Having networked the New York and Los Angeles art scene “Groovy Bob” (as Terry Southern nicknamed him, the two being introduced by Dennis Hopper) established the Robert Fraser Gallery at 69 Duke Street, Grosvenor Square in London. He was one of the first, indeed the only gallery to exhibit Pop Art in both its home-grown and imported American varieties in London at that time. In doing so the gallery (and his Mayfair flat) became London and Europe's unrivalled, hip art emporium and the foci of a "jet-set" salon of pop stars, artists, writers and other celebrities which included The Beatles (Paul McCartney has described him as "one of the most influential people of the London Sixties scene"), The Rolling Stones, Francis Bacon, Peter Blake, Richard Hamilton, William Burroughs, J. Paul Getty, Marianne Faithfull, The Kray Twins, Kenneth Anger, Jim Dine, Claes Oldenburg, Malcolm McLaren, Andy Warhol to name but a few. A master at assembling exhibitions and with impeccable taste, Fraser was however notoriously irresponsible on the business side, often neglecting or unable to pay the artists he represented. Following a six month imprisonment with hard labour for possession of narcotics in a drugs raid at Keith Richards' home and increasing substance abuse, the gallery finally folded in mid 1969. Fraser left the UK and spent the early part of the 1970s in India, returning to London several years later and making regular visits to New York whilst working as a private art dealer. His cutting edge sensibility never left him, persuading London's Victoria and Albert Museum to acquire works by graphics artist Jamie Reid, who had designed the Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks album cover and in 1983 opening a new London gallery promoting the work of young New Yorkers Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. Who art directed and suggested Peter Blake to illustrate the album cover for Sgt Pepper? Who after talking with Paul McCartney about a logo for the Beatles' new record label discreetly left a small, framed picture of an apple by René Magritte on his table? Who was handcuffed to Mick Jagger in the back of the car in the famous Redlands party drug bust? (illustrated Richard Hamilton “Swingeing London '67(a))”; Who sponsored the 1966 exhibition by Yoko Ono at the Indica Gallery, where she first met John Lennon? Robert Fraser (13 August 1937 - 27 January 1986) “knew everyone in the world at one point” (Jim Dine). Provenance: Robert Fraser (gift from Andy Warhol); Jaime Wilson; Christopher Wortley.         The Ondt and the Gracehoper from Two Tales of Shem and Shaun

Chicago, Illinois: Joesph J. D'Ambrosio, 1975. Limited Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. As New/book built into slipcase. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Joseph J. D'Ambrosio. What a remarkable work of art! This edition of The Ondt and the Gracehoper, limited to fifty numbered copies (41) and five artists proofs, has been set in 18pt Bulmer and printed by The Compulsive Printer of Portage Indiana, on a Number three Vandercook proof press. The serigraphs which are quite striking, block prints and presentation case were all prepared by the artist, the late, great Joe D'Ambrosio The cover relief serigraph is gilded with 23 K gold. The story is taken from Two Tales of Shem and Shaun by james Joyce. The book appears to be a bound book, but is really a case and the pages are loose within it. The cover relief-serigraph was produced with 26 layers of silkscreen ink, and then gilded with 23K gold leaf. The last coat of ink is red and lies just below the top layer of gold. As the gold wears away, a red patina will slowly emerge allowing this edition to age gracefully. This device is fro the Italian gilder's craft of gold leaf over red clay. The binding is dark green Ultrasuede over board framing; pinwale corduroy sides and lining. A great piece of art and a great Joyce collectible. Internally flawless the framed clamshell box has small bump on front lower corner a little warped and slight rubbing due to the nature of ultrasuede.

Nagoya: Nisshin-sha, 1975. Bookseller's ticket, small abrasions to the rear end paper from label removal, else near fine in gilt-stamped blue boards, housed in the publisher's plain card slipcase, lightly worn.. First Edition. Thick quarto in slipcase. Limited to 500 copies. The third and last book by Kazuo Kenmochi documenting drug use in Japan. This book includes images from his first two books (Narcotic Photographic Document and Narcotic '61-'72) as well as new images not found in either of the earlier works. The book has a long section of text, also by Kenmochi, and must rank as one of the most comprehensive books on drug addiction ever published. Amidst the reportage (there are many images of drug seizures, photographed in a style not unlike Boltanski or Sol Lewitt), there are incredible pictures of addicts in varying states of disarray.
