Foirades / Fizzles. [Edited by Véra Lindsay].

      - Oblong 8vo (330 x 254 mm). With 33 mixed etchings (5 double-page and 24 full-page) with aquatint, soft-ground, lift-ground, photo-etching (including two in colors); 2 lithographs in colors (box). 64 pp. Text [letterpress (typeface: Caslon Old Face, 16 pt.). Richard de Bas cream wove auvergne paper, watermarked with S. Beckett’s initials and Jasper Johns’ signature). Original publisher's wrappers in linen, Solander-box lined with 2 colour lithographs. London & New York, [Atelier Crommelynck, Paris (Etschings) for], Petersburg Press Ltd., (1975-) 1976. Mint copy. No. 56 of 250 copies printed on heavy handmade paper, watermarked with the initials of Beckett and the signature of Johns, signed by both in the collophon. Out of a total edition limited to 300 copies, including fifty copies hors commerce (thirty numbered I-XXX, and twenty unnumbered). The spiritual creator of the project was the former actress and editor Véra (Poliakoff-Russell-) Lindsay (1911-1992), editor of the Petersburg Press, founded in 1968. While Samuel Beckett agreed to supply her a collection of prose poems the American painter and printmaker Jasper Johns offered 33 black-and-white etchings, which were printed at the Atelier Crommelynck in Paris. The design of the book fortuitously reflects its extraordinary rich contents, and each of the five sections displays both the English and French texts and is preceded by a full-page number identifying the narrative, or "fizzle" to follow. Although Jasper Johns originally thought that he would incorporate the author's texts within his images, he ultimately decided to position the etchings to the left of, and sometimes above, Beckett's writings and to uniformely separate the French and the English versions by double-page etchings. The artist's decision to include both the French and the English versions of the text was not opposed by Samuel Beckett, who however did not much like the bilingual setup. It reflects the author's habitual repetition of images and motifs from text to text and Jasper Johns' own from painting to painting. For the most part, the order of the etchings was not determined by the written texts, "but largely predetermined by Johns' earlier painting, and the congruence of form and content is all the more stunning" (Lois Oppenheim).         GRIS - NOIR - BLEU - ROUGE

1975 ca..

n.p.: Bernard Lassus, 1975. One of 300 copies hand-printed by Kerversau imprimeur. LE JARDIN DE L'ANTERIEUR was Lassus's entry in a competition to design a garden for the new town of L'Isle d'Abeau. His plan won the competition but the project was never realised. LE JARDIN DE L'ANTERIEUR counts among Lassus's earliest published garden projects and both its text and its drawings demonstrate what the OXFORD COMPANION TO GARDENS (p. 205) calls his "approach to landscape which rejects empiricism in favour of exploring the non-measurable realm of the imagination." Stephen Bann says of his projects: "It seems to me beyond question that Lassus's highly inventive descriptions of garden projects function as utopian texts: Arcadia is conjured up, as it were, in the interstices of the design, and the charming line drawings that he provides are the exact graphic correlate to this state of potentiality." ("Arcadia as utopia in contemporary landscape design: the work of Bernard Lassus", HISTORY OF HUMAN SCIENCES Vol. 16 No. 1 p. 117). Accompanying the Lassus text is an essay on the garden by Michel Conan. Folio (55 x 36 cm); loose, as issued, in heavy paper folder; 16 unnumbered pages printed on papier d'Arches with 4 text illustrations + 3 plates from drawings (impressions measuring 21 x 28.5; 29 x 20; and 20.5 x 22.5 cm., respectively), 2 illustrating the garden and 1 showing its site. In leather-backed custom portfolio; just about a fine copy with only the faintest hint of occasional foxing commencing. .
