J.M. Coetzee
John Maxwell Coetzee (1974) 'Dusklands', South African first edition, first printing, published by Raven Press. Signed by Coetzee on the title page. Condition: a near fine copy with a little foxing on the page block and prelims. No bookplates, no previous owners' scribbles. Boards clean and tight. The dust jacket has no rubbing, no tears, no chips. A whiff of foxing. A nice copy of Coetzee's first book which as a South African first edition preceeds the UK first edition by almost an entire decade! Not easy to find with such a dust jacket. Coetzee's scarce debut novel which launched a stellar career leading to two (Man) Booker Prize wins (1983 and 1999), the Nobel Prize in 2003 and countless other accolades. First and Fine. Jorge Luis Borges
Enitharmon Press, 1974. Condition: Fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; the dust wrapper is also fine. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. 25 p. Signed by Author, Translator, and Artist. Limited edition of 300 total, of which 50 were signed by the author and translator; an unspecified number were also signed by the artist, Hugo Manning, of which this is one, this copy being number 3 of the 50. A short story, but the longest written, by Jorge Francsico Isidoro Luis Borges, KBE (1899-1986), a literary giant in both the Spanish-language world and internationally. Regrettably never awarded the Nobel Prize, his works are highly regarded and are seen as the precursor to magical realism later typified by authors such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez. "The Congress" can be viewed as a political essay and was Borges' personal favourite; as with many human endeavors it opens with a high-minded goal and ends in ashes. DESCRIPTION: Bound in gold cloth, white lettering on the spine, ivory laid paper endpapers, tipped-in frontispiece being a reproduction of a pencil sketch by Hugo Manning entitled "Jorge Luis Borges in London, 1971"; small quarto size (approximately 9.75" tall), pagination: (i-vi), 1-17, blank, colophon; issued in a limited edition of 300 total, of which 50 were printed on Glastonbury Coloured Antique Laid paper and, per the colophon page, were signed by the author and translator; this copy is also signed by the artist and it number 3 of the 50. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Laurence, Margaret
McClelland and Stewart, Toronto, 1974. 382 pages. Publisher's Reprint Copy sent to the author for corrections, stamped on first white endpaper: "This is your reprint copy. Please go through the book. Note any corrections necessary for a reprint and return this marked copy to your editor within the next three weeks. We will retain on file for a future reprint." Despite scoring out the stamp and writing "the hell with all this", Laurence had made seven corrections. She adds Jason's Quest to the list of her books; the six other emendations [spelling mistakes, punctuation, tense] are on pages 4, 6, 155, 207, 224, 289. The corrections were likely made in 1974 or '75 [she does not add her 1976 Heart of a Stranger], and the book evidently not returned to the editor. Only one of the noted corrections is made in the Bantam edition [poetry for poety p. 155], three of the noted corrections are made in the M&S 1995 mass market paperback [Colin for Colon [6], [poetry for poety p. 155], and them" for them [224]. The three corrections that Laurence notes that an editor would not notice remain unchanged. A particularly warm inscription to one Campbell Coulter on the title page mentions their "friendship at Trent" probably referring either to her winter/spring 1974 writer in residence term or her 1981-3 stint as Chancellor. Mr. Coulter died in 2008 age 56, having retired to Bridgetown, NS, after teaching high school for 27 years in Mississauga. Jacket is toned and chipped, with a few short closed tears; soiling to a few leaves; binding sound. A very pleasing association copy of Margaret Lau … [Click Below for Full Description]

It exhibits the typical tone of traditional leftist journals: a serious attitude towards life and literature as the unwavering condition beyond any strategy or commitment implicit in political militancy. By way of praise, one could say that in its pages, the authors achieved a congruent expression and interpretation of a world that produces ideals, concepts, abstractions as a function of that vivid reference point which is man, This journal has accomplished the ideal sought by every other gene … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lewis Baltz
Lewis Baltz . The Industrial Trilogy. v.p., v.d. Signed First Editions, First Printings. Signed Association Copies to Robert Sobieszek. Near FINE Condition. This is a rare set of Lewis Baltz's critically acclaimed "Industrial Trilogy" consisting of signed first edition, first printings of "The New Industrial Parks near Irvine California", "Park City", and "San Quentin Point". Viewed as a whole, these three books illuminate Baltz's compelling drive to capture the reality of a sprawling Western ecology gone wild and demonstrate why he considered one of the most influential landscape photographers of the past 50 years. The following are some of the accolades for the trilogy: Parr & Badger from "The Photobook: A History": "Recalling the spare aesthetic "of 19th-century photographers of the American West," the influential New Topography movement, spearheaded by "Lewis Baltz, the group's intellectual [has created] an important link between documentary photography and Conceptual art, between art photography and vernacular photography, between American and European photography"...."[The Industrial Trilogy] is immensely influential. Throughout these works, Baltz's photographs... are exemplary... His objectivity transcends itself, registering a magnified intensity that turns objectivity into an impersonal subjectivity". Alice Pratt Brown, Director of the Whitney Museum of American Art: "Baltz's pictures are object-images, physical presences themselves, not representations of things. Although they are signs of real-world objects, they are also independent, archetypal forms. They have … [Click Below for Full Description]

MY ORIGINAL PHOTO OF CARL BERNSTEIN ORIGINAL PRICE INTACT MY ORIGINAL PHOTO OF JOHN DEAN Here is an amazing collectible book for your collection. "ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN" by Carl Bernstein & Bob Woodward. One of the most important historical books ever written about corruption in U.S. politics. This book was turned into a film starring Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman. I don't usually like to brag but this is possibly the best signed copy of this book you're likely to run across. Allow me to list the book's assets: It's a FIRST EDITION, first printing hardback with the full printing number line. The original price is intact. No remainder marks. The dust jack and book are in FINE/FINE condition. No rips or major creasing to the dust jacket. I've protected the dust jacket in a removable archival sleeve. The book is FLAT-SIGNED by BOTH authors and JOHN DEAN!! I doubt you will be able to locate another copy of this book flat-signed by all three of these names. John Dean of course was a key member of the Nixon team and had a front-row seat to the Watergate conspiracy. I personally secured ALL of the signatures in this book and witnessed the pen hitting the page. I don't know if you collect books or not but Woodward and Bernstein are NOT easy to secure. Woodward almost always refuses to sign older books. I had to track t … [Click Below for Full Description]
