H. B. Un
London: Paul H. Crompton Ltd, 1974. The book in clean and very good condition, light wear and tear to the corners of the dust jacket. No writing, inscription or turned down pages. Rare first edition and first print. A well preserved vintage copy with original dust jacket; overall, tight, firm and strong binding, bright and clean pages and with white and black photographs. (Please see pictures). Pak Mei Kung Fu (white Eyebrow) H. B. Un Published by Paul H. Crompton Ltd., London, 1974 Goner: Martial Arts & Self-Defence, Combat Sports Used/ Hardcover [First Edition/ First Printing] Pak Mei Kung Fu is one of the most aggressive and explosive Chinese martial arts. Pak Mei (also known as Bak Mei and in Mandarin Bai Mei) is a Kung Fu system created by a Taoist monk of the same name. The date generally given for the formation of the style is 1647, just after the creation of the Qing Dynasty (1644). Bak Mei is said to have sported white hair on his brow but it may be, as was common in China, that the name refers to a distinctive white head band. Pak Mei (White Eyebrow) remains a fairly underexposed style of kung fu. Pak Mei Kung Fu (white Eyebrow), was the first English-language book on the style. You get a brief history of Pak Mei and its Great Grandmaster Cheung Lai Chun (who instructed this book's author, H.B. Un), one form and a few self-defense applications. The history is fascinating, the applications are basic but mostly practical, and the form is impossible to learn from the book. Some of the individual movements are worth studying because they demonstrate how Pak Mei synthe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Octavio Paz + Toshi Katayama
Cambridge, MA: Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, Harvard University, 1974. Condition: Near Fine / Signed. They all measure 11 1/4" x 11 1/4" and are housed inside of a printed white laminate box. The 3 geometric boards, with their moveable parts, are designed by Toshi Katayama and each includes cryptic Octavio Paz text. These boards are titled "Bread or Riddle", "Two in One" and "Portrait" and, along with the "copyright" (or "signed/limited") board, are in bright, Near Fine condition. Just a touch of very light soiling to the "copyright" board, otherwise they're all as clean as could be. The fragile publisher's box is very presentable as well but does show some spotting and soiling to the front panel and edges. A bit of clear tape as well discreetly reinforces all of the corners. The background offered on the "copyright" board: "The interrelatedness of form and meaning in art has been a special concern of several major writers. Octavio Paz first explored the effect of visible shape on verse in BLANCO. Written in India in 1966, this poem is composed of words arrayed in columns which the author intended to be read independently and in combination. The idea derives, he has told me, partly from admiration for Mallarme but mainly from pondering on permutation, integration, continuity and other aspects of Tantric thought to which his mind had recently turned. In 1968 he wrote the TOPOEMS, a sequence of six, more explicitly, concrete poems. Whereas the effect of BLANCO's design is conveyed typographically, in these the words are manipulated topographically. Later the same year … [Click Below for Full Description]

McMurtry, Larry
New York: Frank Hallman [printed by Noel Young], 1974. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. No. 268 of 300, octavo size, 27 pp., signed by Larry McMurtry. American novelist and bookseller Larry McMurtry (b. 1936) is perhaps best known for his novels that take place in the Old West and contemporary Texas, using the bleak atmosphere of small towns and ranches to set the stage for his dynamic characters; he is particularly noted for writing about women in a skilled way uncommon at the time. He also cowrote, with Diana Ossana, the screenplay for "Brokeback Mountain", for which he won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. "It's Always We Rambled" is an essay of McMurtry's observations on cowboys, the rodeo circuit, and changing life in America; first printed in "New York Magazine", this lovely edition is filled with McMurtry's wit and masterful storytelling, as he weaves a sobering picture of rodeo and cowboy life in contemporary America. London: Printed at the Trianon Press for the Trustees of the William, 1974. Condition: Fine. Number 128 of the 500 copies bound in quarter morocco, folio size, unpaginated [33 plates and 9 pp. of commentary]. Poet, printer, artist and prophet William Blake (1757 - 1827) is arguably the most original and highly-regarded English authors of all time. Although thought mad by his contemporaries, he was also held in high regard for his expressiveness and for the synthesis of philosophical and mystical senses within his work. Blake's "Jerusalem" has been spectacularly reproduced through the pochoir technique by Arnold Fawkus and his Trianon Press, which has an undeniable claim to being the finest press of its kind in the last century and has long been known for their unrivaled artworks in fine colour printing. "Jerusalem" is Blake's longest prophetic book, with 100 plates that were completed in 1820. Its large host of characters take on the subject of mankind's struggle throughout history for wholeness, with Jerusalem and Albion being allegorical figures representative of the male and female halves of humanity seeking to be unified as one. The three sketched drawings, unmistakably Ardizzone in style, depict a mother and child, a pair of figures clinging to one another and a female nude in a life class with the final scrap of the paper used for a blue crayonned note to himself about a phone call. Ardizzone has made the drawings on the verso of a 1961 letter sent to him from M E George at the Oxford University Press requesting the artist's help with a Children's Book Show. Ardizzone's autograph letter provides context for the collection as it was sent to the autograph collector Colin Huggett in response to his request that the artist 'sign my books for you.' Huggett put together a substantial collection by writing to creative figures asking them for snippets of manuscript from their wastepaper baskets - evidently the drawings were just such an offering. Additionally a Christmas card to Huggett from Catherine Ardizzone incorporating an Edward Ardizzone image of Christmas musicians. Also the Ashmolean Museum's Centenary catalogue from 2000 ofr their Ardizzone exhibition and a couple of postcards acquired … [Click Below for Full Description]

Archive of 26 episodes of "The National Lampoon Radio Hour" on 1/4 inch magnetic tape, individually housed in cardboard boxes with a National Lampoon label and holograph marker noting the episode number, running sequentially from episode 21 (April 5, 1974) through episode 46 (September 26, 1974). Also included is an unlabeled 1/4 inch video tape, with unknown contents. From the estate of Alan Rose, who worked as a graphic designer and layout artist for "National Lampoon" magazine from 1974 to 1988. Spun off the success of "National Lampoon" magazine, and using many of the same staff members, the syndicated "The National Lampoon Radio Hour" ran weekly from November 17, 1973 to December 28, 1974 for a total of 59 episodes. The show served as a launching pad for some of the most successful and influential comedians of the 1970s, including most of the founding members of "Saturday Night Live," where "Radio Hour" creator Michael O'Donoghue also served as the show's first head writer. While five compilation albums were released after the ending of the radio show, and a three CD best-of collection, now out of print, was released by Rhino Records in 1996, complete episodes of the show, such as those offered here, appear rare to impossible to listen to in any format. OCLC locates no copies of the original broadcasts. Episodes 21-31 and 45-46 contain original broadcast material, while episodes 32-37 and 41-42 are a mix of original content and previously aired sketches, including ones from earlier episodes not included in the archive. Finally, episodes 38-40 and 43-44 represent … [Click Below for Full Description]

John le Carré
very good to near fine. John le Carré (David Cornwell) (1974) 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy', UK first edition, first printing, published by Hodder & Stoughton. Signed and inscribed by le Carré on the title page: "John le Carré * for Michael Newman with warmest good wishes [*"David" underneath the inscription]". Provenance: this is one of four signed first editions signed for Michael Newman which we have recently aquired in the south-west of England. As the inscription in our 'Russia House' copy reveals (see image no. 3), Michael Newman has been le Carré's long friend, neighbour and occasional councilor on his work in progress. A wonderful association. Signed copies are exceptionall scarce and desired, and most 'signed' copies are either provided by means of a laid in signature or with questionable provenance at best. Condition: a very good plus to near fine copy with slight shelf wear and a whiff of foxing on the side page block (no foxing at the bottom page block edge). No other scribbles inside the book. No lean. Burgundy top stain present as called for. Boards clean and well preserved. Lettering on spine clean, vibrant and not rubbed out. The dust jacket is very good with the usual spine fade and slight edge wear at the folds. This is the first volume in the seminal 'Karla' trilogy and remains le Carre's signature novel, and perhaps the most famous, best written, and most loved spy thriller of all time. It has been adapted by the BBC as a TV-mini series starring Sir Alec Guinness in 1979, and as movie starring Gary Oldman in 2011. There have also been numerous radio adapta … [Click Below for Full Description]

Borges Jorge Luis
Emecé, Buenos Aires, 1974. In-8º. HC. DJ. (original publishers binding) Special edition of Complete works of Borges, one of 100 signed copies. Rare first edition, as is common, this copy is not numbered, with Borges' signature. The special edition of 100 copies differs from the "ordinary" being printed on Bible paper. It was 1974 and Emecé had just published, with the title Obras completas, 50 years of literary creations by Jorge Luis Borges. The writer most admired by the Argentines had broken a rule by allowing the compilation, something that until then was considered a posthumous tribute. At that time, in an interview, Borges' friend María Esther Vázquez said something similar: "I am against complete works, I think they are partial selections, it is mixed from the most important to the most despicable of a writer, that were published texts not authorized by him, in addition, as they are usually chronological, one begins by reading the crumbs of the adolescence of the author". Provenance : Miguel de Torre nephew of Borges with his Ex-Libris. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Jorge Luis Borges
London: Enitharmon Press, 1974. Condition: Fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, perfectly straight corners with no rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; the dust wrapper is also fine. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. 25 p. Signed by Author, Translator, and Artist. Limited edition of 300 total, of which 50 were signed by the author and translator; an unspecified number were also signed by the artist, Hugo Manning, of which this is one, this copy being number 3 of the 50. A short story, but the longest written, by Jorge Francsico Isidoro Luis Borges, KBE (1899-1986), a literary giant in both the Spanish-language world and internationally. Regrettably never awarded the Nobel Prize, his works are highly regarded and are seen as the precursor to magical realism later typified by authors such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez. "The Congress" can be viewed as a political essay and was Borges' personal favourite; as with many human endeavors it opens with a high-minded goal and ends in ashes. DESCRIPTION: Bound in gold cloth, white lettering on the spine, ivory laid paper endpapers, tipped-in frontispiece being a reproduction of a pencil sketch by Hugo Manning entitled "Jorge Luis Borges in London, 1971"; small quarto size (approximately 9.75" tall), pagination: (i-vi), 1-17, blank, colophon; issued in a limited edition of 300 total, of which 50 were printed on Glastonbury Coloured Antique Laid paper and, per the colophon page, were signed by the author and translator; this copy is also signed by the artist and it number 3 of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Reich, Steve
New York University Press / Halifax: The Press of Nova Scotia, 1974. First Edition. First issue, with no additional note by Reich at the Introduction page, in the rare dust jacket. INSCRIBED by Reich in 1976 on the front pastedown: "For Denis Murphy / from Steve Reich 4/25/76." An extremely uncommon signature, and the scarcest variant of this title, The composer's only published book. Very Good plus in a like dust jacket, with a dampstain along the fore-edge of the front board (and the corresponding portion of the front flap fold). Jacket is lightly worn, with rubbing and a few closed tears). A very presentable copy overall. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

Reich, Steve
New York University Press / Halifax: The Press of Nova Scotia, 1974. First Edition. First issue binding, without the UNIVERSAL EDITION notation on the spine, and without the added note about typographical corrections by Reich at the end of his Introduction. Association copy, inscribed by Steve Reich to Paul Fromm on the verso of the front endpaper: "for Paul Fromm / From Steve Reich." Reich's first and only book. Fromm, who passed away in 1987, was one of the most important enablers of twentieth century classical music, establishing in 1944 the Fromm Musical Foundation, which commissions major works to this day. He was a fan of Reich's work from early on, and in 1985 the Fromm Foundation commissioned Reich's piece, "New York Counterpoint," now considered one of his most important works. Though the inscription is not dated, it was likely made near to the date of publication, predating the commission by nearly a decade. A scarce signature and a great association between one of the twentieth century's greatest composers and one of its greatest patrons. Near Fine in card wrappers, in a Near Fine example of the scarce dust jacket, with only a small chip at the top front panel to note. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

Robert Adams
The Colorado Associated University Press, 1974. Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. A crisp, very sharp copy of the 1974 1st edition. Tight and Near Fine in a bright, price-intact, Near Fine to Fine dustjacket, with just the slightest touch of almost imperceptible creasing along the lower-edges. Oblong quarto, very thoughtful, evocative black-and-white photos thruout, much in the vein of Bill Owens' jarring 1973 look at middle class life, "Suburbia". Along with "Suburbia", "The New West" is cited in Andrew Roth's "The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century" and is also cited in Martin Parr's and Garry Badger's "The Photobook: A History {Vol. II}). Truly a collector's copy, bordering on pristine.
