        The Dispossessed.

New York: Harper & Row, 1974. First edition of this Nebula and Hugo Award-winning novel. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by Ursula Le Guin on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Gerald Jonas, writing in The New York Times, said that "Le Guin's book, written in her solid, no-nonsense prose, is so persuasive that it ought to put a stop to the writing of prescriptive Utopias for at least 10 years". Theodore Sturgeon praised The Dispossessed as "a beautifully written, beautifully composed book", saying "it performs one of [science fiction's] prime functions, which is to create another kind of social system to see how it would work. Or if it would work."

        The Killer Angels.

New York: David Mckay, 1974. First edition of the Shaara's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly signed by Michael Shaara on the front free endpaper. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of wear. Rare and desirable signed. Stephen Crane once said that he wrote The Red Badge of Courage because reading the cold history was not enough; he wanted to know what it was like to be there, what the weather was like, what men's faces looked like. In order to live it he had to write it. This book was written for much the same reason" (Shaara). The Killer Angels reveals more about the Battle of Gettysburg than any piece of learned nonfiction on the same subject. James McPherson wrote, "This is favorite historical novel . . . a superb re-creation of the Battle of Gettysburg, but its real importance is its insight into what the war was about, and what it meant." "A book that changed my life... I had never visited Gettysburg, knew almost nothing about that battle before I read the book, but here it all came alive" (Ken Burns).

        EVE'S HOLLYWOOD: A Confessional L.A. Novel

Delacorte Press, New York 1974 - 296 p. Textual photographs and illustrations. New York: Delacorte Press/Seymour Lawrence, 1974. First edition. "Journalist, party girl, bookworm, artist, muse: by the time she'd hit thirty, Eve Babitz had played all of these roles. Immortalized as the nude beauty facing down Duchamp and as one of Ed Ruscha's Five 1965 Girlfriends, Babitz's first book showed her to be a razor-sharp writer with tales of her own. Eve's Hollywood is an album of vivid snapshots of Southern California's haute bohemians, of outrageously beautiful high-school ingenues and enviably tattooed Chicanas, of rock stars sleeping it off at the Chateau Marmont" (New York Review Books). Octavo. Original black cloth binding, with pink and silver stamping. This copy is inscribed by Mae Babitz, the author's mother, to Helen Wurdemann, longtime director of the Los Angeles Art Association, on the front flyleaf. Light bump to the top of the front board. Some general shelfwear to the dust jacket, with a bit of chipping at the corners and tips; else very good. Scarce. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

YONY: Complete Set in Seven Issues

Chicago: Generative Systems Department of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, 1974-1976. Condition as noted; overall near fine.. Limited edition artist publications. Four small quartos and four oblong quartos (Issue 6 is represented in two versions, a first and second printing). A complete run of the seven issues of YONY, a circulated artist publication produced at the Generative Systems department in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Remarkable collection of printed matter created experimentally on various types of black and white and color photocopiers. Directed by Sonia Sheridan, and co-founded with book artist Keith Smith, the department of Generative Art, along with artist collectives such as EAT, vigorously probed the artistic image making potential of technologies developed by companies such as Xerox and 3M. Their experiments were informed both by movements in conceptual art as well as a spirit of individual creation that would become apparent in the zine movement. The direct, and often bodily engagement with the technology connects the work to the video art movement, especially the feedback loops of self-cybernation. The resulting print objects are notable both as elevated examples of a very specific moment in rapidly evolving digital printing technology and as idiosyncratic artistic creations. While OCLC locates individual issues held in seven libraries, a complete set is exceptionally scarce. Full title list below: SHERIDAN, Sonia and Keith Smith. YONY, Volume 1, Number 1. Chicago: Generative Systems, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, 1974. Quarto. Published in August of 1974, contains several articles, including an overview of the department of Generative Systems, then in the fifth year of existence. Also includes overviews of the program, an invitation to apply for NEA scholarship, and two tipped in color examples of thermal printing paper. The first issue is an interesting mixture of both artist publication and informational packet. Near fine in photocopied wrappers; circulated and with circulated postcard, hand-written from Sonia Sheridan laid in; post card explains that each copy of YONY is individually hand-printed by Sheridan or Smith. Near fine in photocopied wrappers. SHERIDAN, Sonia and Keith Smith. YONY, Volume 1, Number 2. Chicago: Generative Systems, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, 1974. Quarto with unique photocopied plates laid-in. Published in October of 1974; contains contributions from Leif Brush and Mitch Petchenik, including a concept for a "Tethered Satellite" property surveillance plan, not unlike Google Earth. Tellingly, YONY's version assigns responsibility for surveillance on the property owner rather than a government or corporation, creating a network of self-reporting and self-surveilling nodes. Dense issue, largely given over to further topographical investigations. Near fine in photocopied wrappers; circulated. SHERIDAN, Sonia and Keith Smith. YONY, Volume 1, Number 3. Chicago: Generative Systems, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, 1974. Quarto, side stapled. Published in November of 1974, and according to Sheridan's introduction, mailed out simultaneously with issue Number 2. Unlike that issue, Number 3 contains minimal text. Following Sheridan's introduction and a further explanation that "every image in this YONY is a first generation print… each image is unique". What follows is an expressionistic sequence of images of an artist's face, hands, and skin pressed against the scanner, creating manipulated, surreal images. This issue is side stapled, allowing the double sided images to be folded out, releasing the juxtapositions. Near fine in photocopied wrappers, circulated. SHERIDAN, Sonia Landy, Keith Smith, and Craig Goldwyn. YONY, Volume 1, Number 4. Chicago: Generative Systems Workshop, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, 1975. From a stated edition of 400 copies. Quarto, stapled. Published in May of 1975. A more technical issue of YONY, dedicated entirely to electrostatics, "state of the science, state of the art, state of their union." Includes several color plates. Intriguing articles considering electrographics as both "paintbrush for tomorrow" and as "cameras without shutters". Near fine in electographicly illustrated wrappers. SHERIDAN, Sonia Landy, Phil Hitchcock, Craig Goldwyn, Mitch Petchenik, and Mary Jane Dougherty. YONY, Volume 1, Number 5, Scanners, Part 1, Featuring Sound Woven Photographs by Phil Hitchcock. Chicago: Generative Systems Department, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, 1976. From a stated edition of 30 copies. Oblong quarto, velo-bound. SIGNED and inscribed by primary contributor Phil Hitchcock, "To a close friend / Phil Hitchcock". Issue consists of two pages of explanatory text followed by twenty-eight pages of of photocopied images created on the Xerox 400 telecopier. Using a grid system, the images can be assembled to form a life size photographic image of the Sonia Sheridan. Near fine in clear acetate wrappers. SHERIDAN, Sonia and Mary Jane Dougherty. YONY, Volume 1, Number 6, Handmade. Chicago: Generative Systems Dept., The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, 1976. Oblong quarto, slip-bound. SIGNED to back cover by Mary Jane Dougherty. Nineteen monochromatic color images followed by one page of explanatory text. Records movements of the hands on a scanner bed, "performed" for the 3M VQC copier "as audience" and then reproduced on a Xerox 6500 Color Copier. The removable slip binding is intended to allow the viewer to rearrange and rebind at will. Also includes a second printing of same issue executed on a black and white photocopier, otherwise identical format. Both near fine in clear acetate wrappers. SHERIDAN, Sonia and various student artists. YONY, Volume 1, Number 7. Chicago: Generative Systems, 1976. Oblong quarto, comb-bound. Compilation of a wide variety of work by many students from the Generative Systems department; each page is a unique piece, most SIGNED by the artists. The final issue of YONY, and appropriately a broad sample of the creative possibilities of digital information and image replication systems. On most of the pages, the machine used to generate the piece is also notated, making this installment a snapshot of technology available at the time of creation. A beautiful swan song for this technically innovative and artistically accomplished publication. Near fine in clear acetate wrappers.

BETTE DAVIS / MISS MOFFAT (1974)

1974 - Vintage original 22 x 14" (55 x 35 cm.), window card, USA. Bette Davis, Dody Goodman, Anne Francine, Nell Carter, dir: Joshua Logan; Wlksm Logan and Brown. Very rare theatre poster for the ill-fated musical version of Emlyn William's The Corn is Green. Bette Davis scored highly with an Academy Award nomination playing the repressed but driven school teacher in the 1945 film. It seemed like an excellent source for a musical, and many of the tops in theatre were engaged to make this a success. The critics panned it, however, and Bette -- at a time when she was finding it difficult to find work -- lost her nerve. She cited a back injury and left the show, it closing immediately. The show was fraught with problems from the start, and though scheduled to go to Boston and Los Angeles, it ran just two weeks, opening and closing in Philadelphia. A cast recording was made. This very rare poster does not indicate its theatre, but was for those very few aforementioned performances. There is a pinhole in each of the four corners. JUST ABOUT FINE

        The Killer Angels

1st Edition New York: David McKay, 1974. FIRST EDITION of Michael Shaara's Pulitzer-prize winning novel about the battle of Gettysburg. "Reflecting on an extraordinary experience with his family visiting the battlefield at Gettysburg, Michael became obsessed with telling the story of that momentous event through the eyes of the main characters themselves, something that had never been done. After seven years, the manuscript for The Killer Angels was completed... To Michael's disappointment, The Killer Angels was rejected by the first fifteen publishers who saw the manuscript. Finally, in 1973, it was bought by the small independent publisher, The David McKay Company, who was subsequently bought by Random House...
