Bobbs-Merrill: New York, 1974. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Gregory McDonald on the title page and Chevy Chase, who played Irwin M. Fletcher in the movie Fletch. Some spotting to the page edges, in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing. The novel introduces I. M. Fletcher, a journalist and ex-marine staying on a beach watching the drug culture for a story, waiting to find the dealer's source before publishing an expose. It went on to win the 1975 Edgar Allan Poe Award, for Best First Novel, from the Mystery Writers of America. It is the basis for the 1985 film bearing the same name, starring Chevy Chase. Fletch fared well from critics and performed well at the box office. It has since developed a cult following and was followed by a 1989 sequel, Fletch Lives. A prequel, Fletch Won, has been in development for over two decades.

Archive of White House internal memoranda, initialed by Ford

1974. Signed. FORD, Gerald R. Archive of White House internal memoranda, initialed by Ford. Washington: White House Editorial Office, 1974-75. Eight pieces altogether. Four original two-page typed memoranda on White House stationery; two clearance forms; two sheets of White House notepaper. $3800.Collection of original internal memoranda and office forms, initialed by the President, including backgrounders for upcoming visits to South Carolina, West Virginia and Tennessee, and a draft telegram announcing the 55mph speed limit. Copies belonging to speechwriter Paul A. Theis.Gerald Ford served as President during one of the most volatile periods of American history. He was faced with the aftermath of the Watergate scandal and the military withdrawal from Vietnam. On top of that, the nation was experiencing run-away inflation, 7.5 % unemployment, a serious crisis in energy, and an increased crime-rate. To address these issues, Ford made numerous appearances at State Fairs and Annual Festivals, delivering short speeches, particularly on inflation and the energy crisis. This collection contains three backgrounders for such visits, providing the President with details about the given venue and suggesting appropriate content for his speech. Included also is a typed draft of a telegram to be sent to all governors, mayors, and county executives, regarding energy conservation and the imposition of the 55mph speed limit. One of the initialed clearance forms was originally attached to the speech that established Martin Luther King Day. The former owner of these original internal communications, speechwriter Paul Theis, came to the White House from the Republican National Congressional Committee, where he directed public relations activities. He served as Executive Editor in the White House Editorial Office from 1974 to 1976, which included heading up the White House speechwriting unit. Theis oversaw the production of about 12 major speeches per month for Ford.A bit of paper-clip rust on most sheets. A historic archive of presidential documents in near-fine condition.

1974. First Edition . Signed. KING, Stephen. Carrie. Garden City: Doubleday, 1974. Octavo, original burgundy cloth, original dust jacket. $5500.First edition of the novel that launched King’s phenomenal career, boldly inscribed by him, ""For M— D— with best, Stephen King 9/24/80.""Carrie inaugurated King's reign as ""the best-selling American author during the final quarter of the 20th century"" (Chronology of American Literature). When he wrote it, however, he was living in a trailer and working at a laundromat for $60 a week. ""Two unrelated ideas, adolescent cruelty and telekinesis, came together… I did three single-spaced pages of a first draft, then crumpled them up in disgust and threw them away… [The next night, my wife] Tabby had the pages… 'You've got something here,' she said. 'I really think you do"" (King, On Writing, 67-68). Tabitha King was right. ""Life in the trailer ended in 1973 when Doubleday bought Carrie for a $2500 advance. Hardcover sales were not spectacular, but the paperback sales-boosted by the [1976] film of the novel-were nearly 4,000,000 copies. 'The movie made the book, and the book made me,' King says"" (New York Times). ""First Edition"" stated on copyright page; code ""P6"" on page 199; price of $5.95 on front dust jacket flap.         Simple French Food

New York: Atheneum, 1974. Octavo, 433 pages. First edition. A classic. The best of cuisine bourgeoise or cuisine simple from one of the greatest of modern cookbook authors. "The dishes are not those found in posh restaurants, but those one enjoys in comfortable little country restaurants... and in well-run homes where the traditions of good eating have been maintained." (from James Beard's preface). Tiny bit of discoloration to front free endpaper, and some light soiling to gray cloth, otherwise near fine. In an unprice-clipped, very near fine dust jacket. This copy inscribed by the author on the half-title, "for Felice Quinto whose palate I recognized and admired immediately, en toute amitié, Richard Olney." With an additional full-page inscription of Quinto to a love interest, dated "November 22, '74". Quinto was the Prince of Papparazi, the inspiration for the photographer character in Fellini's La Dolce Vita, and famously was once shot with an arrow by Anita Ekberg. Finally, tipped onto a preliminary blank is a press photograph of Olney, Quinto, and Felipe Rojas-Lombardi. A lovely association.

Winston S Churchill, His Complete Speeches 1897-1963, full set of 8 volumes

New York: Chelsea House Publishers in association with R. R. Bowker Company, 1974. First edition. Hardcover. This is a full, eight-volume set of Churchill?s complete speeches. During more than half a century of public life Sir Winston Churchill delivered speeches whose incisive wit, artful cadence, stinging criticism, soaring sentiment, and resolute defiance still echo today. This complete set of 8 massive volumes contains the vast majority of Churchill's speeches from 1897 to 1963. The set is nearly 9,000 pages in length, takes up 18 inches of shelf space, and weighs 34 pounds. Before this incredible undertaking, many of Churchill's speeches had never been published in volume form. The Editor, Sir Robert Rhodes James (1933-1999) was a British biographer, historian, and politician. Like Churchill, he served as a Conservative Member of Parliament. In the words of the Editor ?The project was the brainchild of a remarkable, and very eccentric, New York publisher called Harold Steinberg; it was Arthur Schlesinger?s idea that I should undertake it.? (Letter of 24 November 1995 to Churchill?s Bibliographer, Ronald I. Cohen). In this ?truly formidable project? Rhodes James was aided by nine ?eager and assiduous? young researchers. Not surprisingly given the magnitude of the project - and despite the ambitious titular designation ?His Complete Speeches? - a (very) few speeches escaped inclusion. Nonetheless, this has been rightly called ?an extraordinarily thorough and dependable resource?. A great many of these impressive sets ended up in libraries, and consequently bear ex-library wear and markings. This set is NOT ex-library and is in very good condition. The red cloth bindings remain bright with no sunning to the spines. The bindings are tight, with no separation of the massive text blocks. We note minor wear to extremities and light scuffing to the boards, with wrinkling at the Volume V spine head and just a touch of fraying at the Volume VIII spine head, as well as a little concavity to a few upper spines (attributable to the text block weight). The contents are uniformly bright and clean internally with no previous ownership marks. The pages show some minor soiling but remain bright withal. Please note that this large, heavy set will likely require substantial postage. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A284.1, Woods/ICS A145(a), Langworth p.349.

New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, [1974]., 1974. First edition. First edition. Pseudonym of Lawrence Block. This very scarce book by Lawrence Block under this pseudonym, is the third and final book with that byline and the scarcest. A light ghost of the removal of a sticker on the front pastedown sheet, else fine in a fine, fresh dust jacket with none of the usual soiling or other signs of wear. This is a story based upon an actual incident and is a powerful suspense and murder shocker. The inspiration for this novel is the killing spree of Charles Starkweather and Caril-Ann Fugate across the Midwest in the late 1950's. The front and rear endpapers provide a map of Nebraska and a trip along Route 80 from Grand Island, North Platte, Ogallala, etc., the primary route taken by the couple.

New York: Harper & Row, 1974. First edition of this Nebula and Hugo Award-winning novel. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by Ursula Le Guin on the title page. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Gerald Jonas, writing in The New York Times, said that "Le Guin's book, written in her solid, no-nonsense prose, is so persuasive that it ought to put a stop to the writing of prescriptive Utopias for at least 10 years". Theodore Sturgeon praised The Dispossessed as "a beautifully written, beautifully composed book", saying "it performs one of [science fiction's] prime functions, which is to create another kind of social system to see how it would work. Or if it would work."
