        The Sonnets of William Shakespeare.

Zeitlin & Ver Brugge Booksellers, April 1974., Los Angeles: - Sm. 8vo. 154 pp. 2 illustrations by Mary Kuper. Original binding by Max J. Adjarian in quarter Levant morocco, decorative paper (designed by the printer), raised bands, gilt spine. Fine copy. LIMITED EDITIONâ€"74 of 120 numbered copies. Printed by Saul & Lillian Marks at the Plantin Press, Los Angeles. With wood engravings by Mary Kuper. This is the rarest and most desired hand-printed work from a Southern California printer. It is notoriously rare as it was sold out on publication (Zeitlin bought out the edition and distributed it to private subscribers). It was elegantly designed by Saul Marks (1904-1974) and as a printed book it pleases with the binding, paper and illustrations. Dickover gives Marks a supreme compliment: "Los Angeles has had its share of distinguished printers; and one of them, Saul Marks of the Plantin Press, ranks as one of the greatest of the twentieth century." Some consider this Marks' masterpiece. The book was printed on the Albion Press. Saul was meticulous in his design and craft. He loved the beauty of italic type, which was used for this edition. "The letters beginning each line in the sonnets are roman; and following the typographic practice of Aldus, they are smaller in height than the lower case italic letters with ascenders." Mary Kuper was the Plantin Press's first woman apprentice. She took up wood engraving at the encouragement of Saul.         Pénaltiés de l'Enfer ou Les Nouvelles Hebrides.

Paris Arte Adrien Maeght 1974 - Oblong folio, (29 x 40 cm). No 51 of 200 copies on arches wove paper signed in red crayon by Miro, from a total edition of 220. Title, text and justification on Arches wove paper, 25 lithographs in total (20 colour, 5 black and white), most double-page. Original paper wrappers with first lithograph printed on front, spine and back; set of six lithographs in black by or after the same hand, one with additions in red ball-point pen, in beige paper folder entitled 'documents 1929,' housed in publisher's orange cloth covered box with artist's and author's names on spine. A fine example signed by Miro in red crayon. Both the Spanish artist Joan Miro and the French poet Robert Desnos were prominent figures in the Surrealist movement in Paris, where they met in 1925. Miro had long planned to illustrate a book by Desnos, but the project was delayed by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, closely followed by the Second World War. Desnos was an active member of the French Resistance; he was arrested by the Gestapo in 1944 and sent to several concentration camps including Auschwitz and Buchenwald. Desnos survived the war only to die of typhoid a few weeks after the liberation of the camp where he was held. Nearly thirty years later, Desnos' widow approached Miro with the idea of illustrating his works again. In the end they settled on Pénalités de L'Enfer ou Les Nouvelles-Hébrides [The Penalties of Hell or The New Hebrides], Desnos' first work in prose, written in Morocco in 1922. Mourlot 959-90; Cramer 188. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Vernacular Photo Book]. A Day At Boston Common

s.n., Boston 1974 - 9" x 9". Accordion style binding. 23 pages with 52 black and white photographs and 3 pages of typescript adhesive mounted. Photos measure from 3" x 4" to 4 7/8" x 7 1/4". Album very good plus with some smudging to covers, photos very good. Preserved in a fine protective case. With uncommon artistry, this engaging "homemade" photo book presents -- as the title indicates -- "A Day at Boston Common" in 1974. Belying the turmoil of the Vietnam War and resignation of Richard Nixon from the office of the Presidency, this photo book presents an unsettingly serene urban landscape. Its highlight is a sequence of photos showing a homeless man moving from a park bench to forage in a trash can, one shot showing his torso in the can, while in the background a couple hug and kiss. The photographer captured scenes of children playing, people laughing, a street bazaar [datable to Oct. 31 - Nov. 3), Hare Krishnas, musicians, another photographer, and several images of what appear to be the elderly homeless. We have been unable to identify the photographer "Bruce Marks" beyond his signature, but his streetwise photographic abilities are noteworthy.

        ANIMAL FARM]

      - Ferma zhivotnykh [i.e. Animal Farm]. [N.p., 1970s]. Typescript. 61 leaves. 30x21 cm. Owner's cardboard binding. Fine. The first page contains a short biography of George Orwell, taken from Big Soviet Encyclopedia, printed in 1974. Orwell's satire on the totalitarian regime was too candid for Soviet censors, so the author was labeled as 'trotskist' in 1930s and was never published during Soviet era. However it's not widely known that Orwell corresponded briefly with 'Internatsionalnaya literatura' magazine [i.e. International literature], in 1937. The editor-in-chief of the periodical wrote him asking to send his new novel 'The Road to Wigan Pier' to Moscow because periodical was interested in publishing it. Orwell sent the book replying that he could even write something specially for the magazine but also that they should know he recently fought in Spain on the side of POUM, and that led to the abruption of all the contacts with Orwell from Soviet side. From that time on Orwell's name was under taboo in official press, and his books were published only in late 1980s. Animal Farm was first published in USSR in Latvian periodical 'Rodnik' in 1988. Certainly Animal Farm as well as 1984 was too significant and interesting reading material for an ordinary soviet man, the dweller of the actual 'farm', so it's appearance in Samizdat was inevitable. According to Arlen Blum ('Zvezda', #6, 2003) samizdat versions of Animal Farm started to appear in USSR in late 1960s. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Number 106 of limited edition of 1000. A lavish reprint of the scarce 1838 original.

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] Print tests corrected by Henri Michaux of his text "Dans l'eau changeante des résonances". [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Tygers at Play

Published by Ian Bain 1974 - Etching, finished with a graver. State iiia/iiia. This wonderful print is a later impression of George Stubbs masterpiece 'Tygers at Play', this image is both touching and sublime and it epitomizes Stubbs' genius as an animal painter. George Stubbs is considered one of the greatest English painters. His ingenious animal and sporting pictures remain unrivalled in their passionate depiction of emotion and their commitment to naturalistic observation. Stubbs' was briefly apprenticed to the painter Hamlet Winstanley, a relationship that quickly ended, leaving the young artist to his own tuition. In contrast to contemporary academic theory, Stubbs' attached great importance to the belief that art should imitate nature, not the work of other artists. He spent years carefully studying human and equine anatomy so that he could truthfully represent natural form and movement. A result of this study was his famous 'Anatomy of the Horse', which details, with beautiful engraving, the various elements of a horse's anatomy, from skeletal form to muscular definition. Continuing in search on innovation, Stubbs began experimenting with a myriad of different mediums, becoming accomplished in both enamels and printmaking. Through arduous application, he became a talented mezzotint engraver and worked with ease in both soft ground, and etching techniques. Stubbs was elected director of the Society of Artists and a Royal Academician, and today his prized paintings are housed in some of the finest museums in the world. This animated image shows two leopards at play in front of the opening of a dark cave. Although the print was entitled 'Tygers at Play', early writings on natural history show that tyger was a generic term, commonly applied to all the larger cats, with the sole exception of the lion. This magnificent print not only demonstrates Stubbs' talents as an engraver but also exemplifies his genius when expressing animal emotion. In contrast to some of his darker images of conflict, 'Tygers at Play' is light and carefree while still remaining true to nature. In mood and effect this image is nothing short of sublime, it blends natural observation with a sense of emotion creating a visual feast for the viewer. This is a later impression from a limited edition of 175 copies, printed in 1974 under the supervision of Philip McQueen. The edition is printed on J. Barcham Green `Penshurst' paper, and published by Ian Bain at the John Boydell Press for Observer Art Ltd. The total edition of 235 prints was completed by 60 copies printed in brown-black ink on J. Green & Co. hand-made paper.         Carte sotto stampa. Frammenti

CASTELLANI, LEONARDO. Carte sotto stampa. Frammenti. Reggio Emilia: Prandi, 1974. 65 pagine. 37x27 cm. Lievissime abrasioni sulla custodia. Perfetto l'interno. -

        The Power Broker.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1974. First edition of the author's Pulitzer-Prize winning work on Robert Moses. Thick octavo, original black cloth, cartographic endpapers. Signed by Robert A. Caro on the title page. Fine in a a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Dust jacket design by Paul Bacon. A very nice example of this bulky book, which tends to show wear. One of the most acclaimed books of our time, winner of both the Pulitzer and the Francis Parkman prizes, the Power Broker tells the hidden story behind the shaping (and mis-shaping) of twentieth-century New York and makes public what few have known: that Robert Moses was, for almost half a century, the single most powerful man of our time in New York, the shaper not only of the city's politics but of its physical structure and the problems of urban decline that plague us today. "Surely the greatest book ever written about a city" (David Halberstam). Theodore H. White called it "A masterpiece of American reporting. It's more than the story of a tragic figure or the exploration of the unknown politics of our time. It's an elegantly written and enthralling work of art."
