[Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Holiday [Inscribed]

London: Hutchinson, 1974. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Second Impression of one of the scarcest Booker Prize winners (Holiday shared the award with Nadine Gordimer's The Conservationist, in 1974). Neatly inscribed by Middleton on the title page: "To Giilian and Richard, / with every good wish, / Stanley Middleton." 8vo: [6],240pp. Publisher's French blue cloth, spine stamped in silver, pictorial dust jacket designed by Colin Andrews, priced £2.75 net (scored through). Fine (and apparently unread), square and tight; Fine jacket, with absolutely no fading to spine panel. "Holiday is one of those books that the enemies of literary fiction often complain about: a novel in which "nothing happens"-or at least, all the action takes place inside the head of a determinedly average middle-class character. In the physical world, little more takes place than that the protagonist, a lecturer in education called Edwin Fisher, goes on holiday to an old-fashioned 'nineteen-thirties sunshine shoddy' seaside resort, has a few bed-and-breakfast fry-ups, chats to some girls on the beach, mooches on the prom, meets his father-in-law a few times, has an inebriated fondle with a married woman, and then returns home to the wife he has recently left. Inside Fisher's head, however, all systems are go. Middleton adopts the role of the writer as God with glee, but shows no mercy. He opens up his leading man like a scallop. . . with such a deft sense of surprise and timing that . . . I started to feel voyeuristic. I was embarrassed for Fisher and troubled that I'd been shown so many of his secrets. . . . In 1974 Ronald Blythe said in his Sunday Times review of the book that 'we need Stanley Middleton to remind us what the novel is about. Holiday is vintage Middleton. The result of Mr. Middleton's analysis is so satisfying that one has to look at nineteenth-century writing for comparable storytelling.'" (The Guardian) N. B.         Histoire des avanturiers qui se sont signalez dans les Indes, contenant ce qu'ils ont fait de plus remarquable depuis vingt années. Paris, Jacques Le Febvre, 1688. 2 volumes. 8vo. With engraved frontispiece, 3 folding engraved maps, 3 engraved plates and 1 engraving in text. Contemporary calf, richly gold-tooled spines and board edges.

Cat. NHSM, p. 877; Sabin 23476; cf. H. de la Fontaine Verwey, “The ship's surgeon Exquemelin and his book on the buccaneers”, in: Quaerendo IV (1974), pp. 109-131; Howgego, to 1800, E-39. Second French edition of a best-selling illustrated adventure story written by a former Caribbean pirate: the most important primary source and "almost the only comprehensive source of information for pirate activities in the seventeenth century"(Howgego). It was first published in Dutch and soon translated into many languages. "There is certainly no other book of that time which experienced a popularity similar to that of the Bucaneers of America which was in the ten years following its publication translated into most of the European languages" (Sabin). The French edition was, just like the Dutch edition, directly based on the original manuscript. And although it is to a large extent the same as the original Dutch edition of 1678, it is considerably longer. The illustrations and maps for the French edition were newly engraved.Exquemelin (ca. 1645-1707), born in a small town on the coast of Normandy, began his career in service of the French West India Company on a 1666 voyage to Tortuga in the Caribbean. There he went into the service of the notorious Welsh privateer Henry Morgan (ca. 1635-1688), probably as a ship's surgeon. He returned to Europe ca. 1674 and made a new career as a reputable surgeon in Amsterdam, where he wrote the present book. The text is divided into three parts. The first tells of the French voyage to the West Indies in 1666 and describes the circumstances there. The second recounts the dreadful deeds of the Caribbean pirates, especially François l'Olonnais and Henry Morgan, and the third describes the burning and looting of Panama City by Morgan's unruly men. With the engraved armorial bookplate of Vincent Michel Maynon de Farcheville (ca. 1716-1806) on paste-down of both volumes. Frontispiece trimmed along the edges (slightly cut short), folding map with a tear (restored at the back with browned cello tape) and a few occasional stains and smudges. Binding has some minor restorations to the spine and one hinge cracked. Generally in good condition.

        Facsimiles of Documents.

No Publisher. No Date. 5 loose facsimiles of documents relating to John Baskerville. Various sizes, folded. Housed in an envelope address to R.J.L Kingsford. An intruiging group of facsimile documents. With the documents is a letter from Brooke Crutchley to R.J.L. Kingsford, on Cambidge University Press headed paper dated 1 May 1974. "Dear Billy, I am enclosing five facsimiles of Baskerville items which I have come across in the course of clearing my cupbaords. Can you identify them? My first guess was that they were done for Strauss & Dent but Pip says no. Perhaps they were produced by the Baskerville Club. Have you any ideas? I have nine sets in all to dispose of and if you would like one please keep it, otherwise I will no doubt be able to find a suitable home. Yours ever Brooke." Sadly we do not have Kingsford's reply and so cannot know if he was able to shed more light. The five facsimile documents are: A petition by John Baskerville to the Lords Justices applying for patent to a new method of grinding metal plate by machine (small tear at fold, slightly spotted) An autograph letter from John Bskerville to Horace Walpole MP dated 2 November 1762 requesting patronage. An autograph letter from John Baskerville dated 3 Dec 1766 to "Livy" sending him three copies of Virgil. He adds that he would have added as many copies of Horace "but for my wife's zealous impatience" An autograph draft of Basskerville's Will dated 1773. An autograph letter to John Baskerville dated 19th January 1771 from Boulton & Fothergill requestinng goods from Baskerville for a customer of theirs. With an anotated note by Baskerville at the end saying that he "makes none of the goods need except Bread Baskets".
