        Road to Kaluga

Heinemann, U.K., 1974. First Edition. Binding: Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 232 pages. ' As the Grande Armee of Napoleon pushed the Russians back towards Moscow, Major Orlov, a handsome, aristocratic Staff Officer, knew that the wounded would be abandoned in Smolensk to certain captivity and even death. Although badly injured himself, Orlov's sense of duty impels him to lead a company of wounded Russian soldiers away from the battle-scarred city under cover of night. They leave Smolensk burning in the distance and start their perilous journey to Kaluga and safety. They have not gone far when they come on a deserted inn - deserted except for a young woman, the Countess Irina Barova. She accepts Orlov's offer of help and soon Orlov finds that he has involved himself in something which will change the entire course of his life. Together the band of wounded Russians face problems of disease, of extreme weather conditions, of villages deserted and bridges destroyed and, above all, they face the constant threat of French attack. In this highly readable historical romance, Dinah Dean conveys the spirited air of camaraderie which develops among the wounded men and the growing love of Orlov and Irina Barova in the midst of the vividly recreated horrors of the Napoleonic War '. Book - [SEE SCAN] - in Fine [much better than Very Good] black boards with gilt lettering - light bumping to the extreme bottom of the spine. Contents, Very Good, usual faint browning to this type of paper, otherwise clean and tightly bound. Dust Jacket [By Dave Webster] - Very Good - [SEE SCAN] - a bright jacket, with some surface marking to the white background to the back of the jacket, light rubbing to the extreme corners and extreme ends of the spine, faint 'ghosting mark' to the front of the jacket, looks as if a very small label was on the jacket for a while but has since been removed with no surface loss, just a slight difference in colour. An Attractive Copy of the Author's First Work. Size: 8.75 inches tall by 5.5 inches. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: 251-750 grams. Category: Fiction; Inventory No: 000737.

Corners of box slightly bumped, minor staining on boards. Closed surface tear on lower edge of clamshell box compartment, firmly holding. Captions and all other text in French. Clamshell box in overall very good, plates in near fine condition. Complete signed portfolio.

Fine in a very good dust jacket with several edge tears and a heavy vertical crease near the front spine fold. This is the publisher's reinforced library binding of burgundy cloth stamped in silver -- not, however, an ex-library copy: simply the issue created by the publisher for sale to libraries and as such uncommon without library markings.         Gravity's Rainbow

The Viking Press New York: The Viking Press. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Fine. FIRST EDITION of Pynchon's masterpiece, one of the most celebrated works of modern literature; winner of the National Book Award for 1974. "Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow (1973) is a tour de force in 20th-century literature. In exploring the dilemmas of human beings in the modern world, the story, which is set in an area of post-World War II Germany called "the Zone," centres on the wanderings of an American soldier who is one of many odd characters looking for a secret V-2 rocket that will supposedly break through the Earth's gravitational barrier when launched. The narrative is filled with descriptions of obsessive and paranoid fantasies, ridiculous and grotesque imagery, and esoteric mathematical and scientific language. For his efforts Pynchon received the National Book Award, and many critics deemed Gravity's Rainbow a visionary, apocalyptic masterpiece" (Britannica).New York: Viking Press, (1973). Octavo, original orange cloth, original dust jacket. Book near-fine with creasing to small section of text block; dust jacket price-clipped and with small ink number ("1049") written on front flap; otherwise dust jacket remarkably bright and fine with no edgewear.         Yonnondio from the Thirties

(NY): Delacorte Press. (1974). The uncorrected proof copy, as well as a review copy, of her first novel, begun in 1934 -- a chapter of it was published in the Partisan Review that year -- and put aside for nearly 40 years while the author raised her four children and attended to the tasks of survival. The uncorrected proof copy is inscribed by the author to noted bookseller Burt Britton: "Dear Burt - I am sorry you have this - I am sorry I could not prevent this edition with its changes made by an impertinent copy editor, and a publisher who refused to print corrections to original copy, and all the changes and revisions I felt necessary after seeing these proofs. The paperback is right. Tillie." Olsen has also signed her name in full on the same page; written an illegible note ("genuine ...."), initialed the front cover; corrected the publication date on the information sheet on the inside front cover; and added "and an unnamed copyeditor" to the author credit. A hint of spine sunning, else fine in wrappers. Together with a review copy of the first edition, signed by Olsen on the title page, and inscribed by her under the front flap: "For Burt Britton, Book Lover - See note in uncorrected page proof. Thank you for caring for this anyway. Tillie Olsen 1976." Fine in a very near fine, mildly spine-sunned dust jacket, with review slip laid in. Books inscribed by Olsen -- whose handwriting is so tiny as to be almost unreadable -- are uncommon. The proof and the book are housed together in a custom clamshell case. . First Edition.       (London): New English Library. (1974). The first British edition of his first novel, basis for one of the defining movies of the '70s and the beginning of one of the most remarkable writing careers in the history of American letters. Signed by the author. A strip of glue residue to each pastedown where a previous jacket protector was attached; thus near fine, in a near fine dust jacket with very small corner chips. The British edition of Carrie is considerably scarcer than the American edition, if only because of the relative size of the two countries, the U.S.A. and Great Britain -- the U.S. being approximately five times as populous as the U.K. -- and the resultant size of their publishing industries. As an indicator of that, one online listing site currently shows over 100 copies of the American first edition of Carrie available for sale, and only six copies of the U.K. first. Scarce, especially signed. . First Edition. Hardcover.

The New Industrial Parks Near Irvine, California

Leo Castelli/ Castelli Graphics New York: Leo Castelli/ Castelli Graphics, 1974. First edition. Hardcover. Done in a tiny edition of only 960 copies this is one of the iconic books from the New Topographic movement. A stark collection of 51 black and white images of man made spaces but all without any evidence of human life. A very near fine copy with a tiny spot to the top edge of the page block in a bright very near fine dust jacket with a slight bit of darkening to the spine. Easily one of the better copies I've seen. (Parr & Badger v2 p 34-35: Roth p 228)
