?Symmetries of Baryons and Mesons? in Physical Review, 125 Issue 3 pp. 1067-1084, 1 February 1962

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Murray Gell-Mann?s "Eightfold Way" paper, a work that "brought order out of the chaos created by the discovery of some 100 kinds of particles in collisions involving atomic nuclei" (   "During the 1950s, discoveries of new subatomic particles were proliferating so quickly such that scientists spoke of a "particle zoo." Gell-Mann turned his attention to some particles that behaved particularly strangely. He proposed a new quantum property of particles he called the "strangeness number." While studying particles, he found even more general characteristics that allowed him to sort them into eight "families." He called this grouping the eightfold way, referring to Buddhist philosophy's eight attributes of right living. Then he found that the eightfold way could really best be explained by a particle, undiscovered as yet, that had three parts (hadrons), each holding a fraction of a charge. He called them "quarks" with a nod to James Joyce, whose novel Finnegan's Wake contains the passage: "Three quarks for Muster Mark!" Fractional charge seemed an outrageous suggestion at first, but proof came for his theoretical quarks in 1974" (  In Physical Review, 125 Issue 3 pp. 1067-1084, 1 February 1962.  CONDITION & DETAILS: 4to.  Very slight and minor crease to the rear lower corner, otherwise near fine condition in every way.

Tokyo: Nora-sha, 1974. Fine in off-white cloth boards, with the original glassine largely intact (a few small tears and creases), in a clean, near fine example of the publisher's slipcase. The only copy I have seen with any historical significance.. First Edition. Quarto in slipcase. Original booklet and card prospectus laid in. Lengthily INSCRIBED in Japanese by the publisher, photographer Kazuo Kitai, who went bankrupt publishing this book. Kitai explained to me that Ihei Kimura - at the time Japan's best-known photographer - had personally promised to sell 500 copies of the book. Kimura's untimely death as the book went to press undid any chance the young publisher had to recoup his money. (Parr / Badger, v1, 297).

The front fly has been neatly vertically creased, perhaps to make the page easier to inscribe. Weinberg's inscription reads: "for Tom more than for anyone else. Herman." Wray's reads: "Tom!
