        Spencerian Bird [Spencerian Penmanship art]

1974 - Original art; a thoroughly stunning example of Spencerian Penmanship art. Crafted by Asao with pitch-black ink on paper. Originally a method of rules for teaching cursive writing to children, "Spencerian Penmanship" was created in the mid-1800's by Platt Rogers Spencer, who grew up admiring the graceful lines of the John Hancock signature on the Declaration of Independence, and his five sons. It stood in contrast to Italian calligraphy [which was developed for speed only] particularly in its capital letters, which were to be accomplished in artful flourishes unique to the writer's style. The writing form has occasionally been taken to its extremes as a beautiful form of graphic art, as in the case of this August, 1974 Spencerian Bird rendering by Shigeo Asao. The Spencerian Bird form is an expression in Spencerian cursive art of a bird-of-paradise-like creature or creatures (three are found in this example), a now famous device because elaborate tail plumage allows full expression of the complex flowing curves of the art form. Examining this opus by Asao, with its minutely tapering threadlines and deep black ink still glistening in places, one has to wonder how it's possible with a human hand. Signed and dated. 7.5" x 11" white paper, loosely matted 14.75" 18.5". Slight creasing, tiny faint brown spot, else fine for both the work and the matting. You'll want to see scans of this. - Jeff Harvey LBB-D

The second book by acclaimed female Japanese photographer Ruiko Yoshida, whose early seventies images of Harlem capture both the time and place with uncanny virtuosity.
