The Karla Trilogy] Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy, The Honourable Schoolboy, Smiley's People

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1974-1979. First editions of each title in the author's acclaimed Karla Trilogy. Octavo, original black cloth. 3 volumes. Each are signed by Le Carre on the title page. Tinker, Tailor Soldier Spy is signed "David Cornwell aka John LeCarre". Each are near fine to fine in near fine dust jackets, with The Honourable Schoolboy price-clipped. An excellent set, uncommon in this condition and signed. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy garnered instant praise for Le Carre as "[t]he premier spy novelist of his time. Perhaps of all time" (Time). "Le Carre is simply the world's greatest fictional spymaster" (Newsweek). Le Carre's inspiration drew from his experience of the revealing of the Cambridge Five traitors in the 1950s and '60s (Anthony, 2009), and the novel's popularity can be seen in relation to those shocking events. In 2011, the novel was adapted into a successful film, starring Gary Oldman and Colin Firth, and it received three nominations at the 84th Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Actor. This successful production is but one of Le Carre's numerous accolades in espionage fiction. He was awarded both the Helmerich Award and the Goethe Medal, and, in 2008, The Times ranked Le Carré 22nd on its list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945.

New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1974. First edition. Tall slim quarto, original cloth. Fine in a very good dust jacket. Signed by Eric Carle on the title page.         The Wandering Tattler

Wisconson: The Perishable Press Limited, 1974 First edition, first printing. Limited edition, one of 130 copies signed by the author in orange ink on the half-title page. A fine copy. Overall, a very bright and attractive copy. The Wandering Tattler is a collection of poems by Diane Wakoski, a prolific American poet known for the personal quality of her writing. It is truly a work of literary art, as admirable for the craftsmanship of its physical construction as for its words and images. Wakoski's poetry, which incorporates a heavy use of bird-like and spring imagery, is enhanced by the accompanying stunning illustrations by Ellen Layon. These motifs are continued in the publishing and printing processes; published "as our Sun enters Aries or the first day of Spring," the drawings and illustrations are printed on handmade Shadwell papers, the colors of which were drawn from the "colors of the actual birds." Additionally, The Perishable Press Limited, run by professor, artist, and book designer Walter Hamady, boasts the use of a 'tz' ligature in "When the Quetzal Bird Stole the Roadrunner's Feathers," emphasizing the artistic and personal nature of this book's publication.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

THE STORY OF CUPID AND PSYCHE

London: Clover Hill Editions by the Rampant Lions Press, 1974. Limited Edition, numbered 85 of 130 sets. Full Leather. Folio. Edward Burne-Jones. Two volumes full bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in midnight blue goat housed in patterned-paper slipcase accompanied by matching leather-backed clamshell containing a set of 47 collotype prints of the original drawings and 44 proofs of the wood engravings. A very nice set with only light rubbing to the portfolio; loose plates are clean and bright. Conceived of by Burne-Jones and William Morris in the 1860s, Morris’s Cupid and Psyche with Burne-Jones’s woodcuts was never realized because, according to Joseph Dunlap, “he could not match the force of his wood engravings with the diffident type faces available in the 1860s.” After Morris’s death Cockerell and Burne-Jones discussed a Kelmscott Press edition. Several specimen sheets were issued in 1897 (Peterson B6), but with Burne-Jones’s death the following year, the edition was abandoned. In conjunction with Clover Hill Editions, Will and Sebastian Carter of the Rampant Lions Press produced this edition with Morris’s Troy type newly cast from the original matrices held by the Cambridge University Press. Roderick Cave suggests this most ambitious production is their crowning achievement “in an unjustified setting, which compliments the original wood engravings in a way none but the bravest would have attempted.” Peterson B6; Roderick Cave, The Private Press.

Winston S. Churchill, His Complete Speeches 1897-1963, full set of 8 volumes

New York: Chelsea House Publishers in association with R. R. Bowker Company, 1974. Hardcover. Near fine. During more than half a century of public life Sir Winston Churchill delivered speeches whose incisive wit, artful cadence, stinging criticism, soaring sentiment, and resolute defiance still echo today. This complete set of 8 massive volumes contains the vast majority of Winston Churchill's speeches from 1897 to 1963. The set is nearly 9,000 pages in length, takes up 18 inches of shelf space, and weighs 34 pounds. Before this incredible undertaking, many of Churchill's speeches had never been published in volume form. A great many of these impressive sets ended up in libraries, and consequently bear ex-library wear and markings. This set is in near-fine condition and is *NOT* ex-library. The red cloth bindings remain clean and bright with sharp corners and no sunning to the spines. External flaws are trivial, limited to some slight wrinkling at a few spine ends and tiny bumps to the Volume VI corners. The contents are uniformly bright, clean, and crisp internally, and feel unread. We find no previous ownership markings and no spotting. The page edges remain likewise clean and bright. The great weight of the text blocks often results in broken bindings. Here we note tight bindings with the minor exception of Volume V, which shows a split to the gutter paper between the first and second free endpapers, but the mull beneath remains firmly attached and the text block does not sag in the binding. Please note that this large, heavy set may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A284.1, Woods/ICS A145(a), Langworth p.349.&

"Summer Switch" is inscribed the day prior on the front endpaper: "For Amy, and Sy (and absent Jenny and Sue) / With much love / Mary (Rodgers) / Nov. 3, 1983." The first two books deal with the mischievous Annabel, and the third reverses the reversal, with Ape Face Andrews and his father finding themselves swapped. The binding is "full aniline finish Bookcalf" by Sangorski & Sutcliffe with raised spine bands, gilt rule compartments, hand-marbled endpapers, gilt-rule turn-ins, and gilt page edges. The pristine fine binding is housed in a felt-lined dark red buckram clamshell case with a gilt-stamped spine label matching the binding's dark red calf. David Wynne (1926 - ) is a renowned British sculptor of figures, animals, and portraits, including the Queen and the Beatles. He was awarded the OBE in 1994. This spectacular limited edition features his work from 1968-1974 - what the 1974 introduction by Graham Hughes calls "Wynne's twelve most important public commissions of the past eight years." Each work is illustrated with photographs taken by Clive Barda "showing the settings as well as the most beautiful features of each piece." The book itself remains in flawlessly fine condition, with no discernable wear or defects and no markings other than the artist's signature. The clamshell preservation case shows only trivial scuffing and some spotting to the white felt lining. Please note that this large, heavy book may require additional postage.         Death Of An Old Goat [FIRST UK EDITION COMPLETE WITH DUST JACKET]

Collins Crime Club, U.K. 1974 - ‘All universities are subject to the hazard of being sent up in no uncertain fashion by past or present alumni, or even teachers, and it is high time Australian universities took a turn. And where better to start than with the University of Drummondale, situated somewhere between Sydney and Brisbane, and unenthusiastically preparing to welcome a Distinguished Guest? Drummondale was not one of Australia's most distinguished seats of learning, but then Professor Belville-Smith was hardly one of England's most distinguished exports. Nevertheless, he came, he saw, he lectured (on Mrs Gaskell and Jane Austen) — and within a few hours was found violently and mysteriously dead. Who could have reason to kill the new arrival? Inspector Royle reluctantly accepted that he must find out, or at least go through the motions, and that this was one case in which the palm-greasing to which he was accustomed was unlikely to occur. In a short time Belville-Smith had met an astonishing number of people, thanks to his attendance at a party where the University English Department and representatives of the local grazing community had fraternized uneasily. So far as the academics were concerned, Royle was out of his element — until Fate presented him with an aide. So far as the grazing community was concerned, he was out of his depth, though he tiptoed heavily among them; it was not for a good cop to investigate the rich and influential — unless they were up to something very odd indeed. Robert Barnard's first novel is a hilarious send-up of university life 'down under', and undoubtedly owes something to the six years he spent at an Australian university, which he says bears a passing resemblance to Drummondale though the staff are completely distinct. He evidently found it a rewarding experience — not least because it brought him an Australian wife.’ Book - [SEE SCAN] - in Fine [much better than Very Good] bright red boards with gilt lettering - light bumping to the extreme bottom of the spine. Contents, faint speckling to the extreme page edges. Dust Jacket - [SEE SCAN] - Very Good - a nice bright jacket - small closed tears and light wear to the extreme corners and extreme ends of the spine, price clipped.
