The Sculpture of David Wynne 1968/1974

London: Phaidon Press Limited, 1974. Signed Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. This is the signed, limited edition, copy #39 of 125, hand-numbered thus on the limitation page. The binding is "full aniline finish Bookcalf" by Sangorski & Sutcliffe with raised spine bands, gilt rule compartments, hand-marbled endpapers, gilt-rule turn-ins, and gilt page edges. A gilt medallion "in fine silver, modelled by the sculptor" is inset on the front cover. The half-title bears the artist's signature in bold, black ink. The pristine fine binding is housed in a felt-lined dark red buckram clamshell case with a gilt-stamped spine label matching the binding's dark red calf. David Wynne (1926 - ) is a renowned British sculptor of figures, animals, and portraits, including the Queen and the Beatles. He was awarded the OBE in 1994. This spectacular limited edition features his work from 1968-1974 - what the 1974 introduction by Graham Hughes calls "Wynne's twelve most important public commissions of the past eight years." Each work is illustrated with photographs taken by Clive Barda "showing the settings as well as the most beautiful features of each piece." The book itself remains in flawlessly fine condition, with no discernable wear or defects and no markings other than the artist's signature. The clamshell preservation case shows only trivial scuffing and some spotting to the white felt lining. Please note that this large, heavy book may require additional postage.

        The Late Richard Dadd, 1817-1886

The Tate Gallery, 1974. 1st printing 1st. Softcover. Very Good/n/a. A fine book published to accompany the Tate exhibition of Dadd's work, the first major one since his death nearly a century before. Dadd followed in the footsteps of Joshua Reynolds and Fuseli, and was best known for his fairy pictures filled with meticulous, tiny, sometimes disturbing detail. He went mad in 1843 and murdered his father, thereby spending the rest of his life in the lunatic asylums of Bethlehem Hospital and Broadmoor, painting all the while. Allderidge's title is taken from an "Art Union" quotation in 1843, ".for, although the grave has not actually closed over him, he must be classed among the dead."

Paris: Christian Dior, 1974. Limited. Pair of 2 prints. Ink, watercolor and gouache on xerograph. Original annotations in pen and fabric swatch attached with staples. Sheet measures 13" x 8.5". This pair of 2 original croquis from the designer Christian Dior features the elements of an outfit from the Autumn/Winter 1974-1975 collection, when the house was under designer Marc Bohan. The second presents a matching tailored blazer complemented by a black fox stole. Both include swatches of the appropriate blue fabric stapled to the bottom of the sheet. These sketches were produced in a limited quantity and presented to potential clients in attendance at the Paris Couture shows held by Dior in the spring and fall of each year.       Johannesburg: Raven Press, 1974. First edition of the Nobel Prize-winning author's first book. Octavo, original cloth. Slight spine lean, else near fine in a near fine dust jacket with just a touch of rubbing to the extremities. A very sharp copy. Dusklands is a pair of novellas in the tradition of Conrad's Heart of Darkness. The first novella "Dusklands" probes the links between the powerful and the powerless. The second novella "Vietnam Project" is narrated by a researcher investigating the effectiveness of United States propaganda and psychological warfare in Vietnam. The question of power is also explored in "The Narrative of Jacobus Coetzee," the story of an eighteenth-century Boer frontiersman who vows revenge on the Hottentot natives because they have failed to treat him with the respect that he thinks a white man deserves.
