The Mote In God's Eye

New York: Simon & Schuster. NF/NF. 1974. 1st Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. 0671218336 . 1st edition/1st printing. 1st printing with full number line. Near fine, straight, clean book with no handwriting in it and with the silver spine lettering in fine condition, with very slight edge fading to the binding--as usual--and slight toning to text paper--as usual. There are a couple of very small, very faint spots to page edges, and a touch of shelfwear to the lower front corner; no other faults. The near fine price intact dustjacket is clean, crisp and unfaded, with a few very tiny nicks/rubs at spine fold ends and flap fold ends and one small surface rub with no color loss to the back panel gutter area but with no tears or chips. Quite a handsome example of this scarce in the 1st printing classic. I agree with Robert Heinlein's blurb on this one; it is one of the very best sci-fi books I've ever read, with a gut-wrenching ending. Not a story likely to be forgotten easily. .

        Viaje a Cuba

[México: Fondo de Cultura Económica, 1974]. A few creases to the covers; close to near fine in photo-illustrated wrappers.. First Edition. Small quarto. Edition of 20,000 copies; despite the large limitation no copies are currently for sale on the public databases, nor have I seen the book before. Issued as part of the Testimonios del Fondo series, and featuring the unique design of Marcos Kurtycz, who was the series editor, and who took most of the photographs in this volume himself. Kurtycz framed his images in rounded squares and rectangles, with no two pages similar. He also eschewed yellow: the entire publication is printed in cyan and magenta. While conceptual artists have tried to make their books look like cheap tourist guides, there are fewer examples of cheap tourist guides rising to this level of design sophistication, if not exactly conceptual art. [James Cagney]: The American Film Institute [2nd Annual] Award for Life Achievement in Motion Pictures and Television 1974 [*SIGNED* by Cagney and 33 of his friends and colleagues]

[Washington DC]: The American Film Institute. Good. [1974]. First Edition. Stapled wraps. NOISBN . [a much-handled copy, with various creases to covers and external rubbing and light soiling -- but consider who all handled it!] (B&W photographs) A spectacular copy of the tribute book for the AFI's second annual award, the first presented to an actor, which has been SIGNED not only by the honoree himself, but also by 33 other guests who were present at the dinner on March 13, 1974, at which the award was bestowed -- a truly incredible assemblage of showbiz luminaries, many of them legends on a par with Cagney himself. The complete list of signatures, nearly half of which appear on the introductory page with the rest scattered throughout the booklet (often next to a photograph of the signer, sometimes with a personal inscription added) is: Peter Bogdanovich, Joan Blondell, Ray Bradbury, Mary Brian, Mae Clarke (she who got the grapefuit in the puss from Cagney in THE PUBLIC ENEMY), Dan Dailey, Doris Day, Kirk Douglas, Charlton Heston, Bob Hope, Martha Hyer, Allen Jenkins, Jack Lemmon, Mervyn LeRoy, Frank McHugh, Shirley MacLaine, Aileen Manning, Rouben Mamoulian, Virginia Mayo, Ronald Reagan, Nancy Davis Reagan, Rex Reed, Debbie Reynolds, Nelson Riddle, Rosalind Russell, George C. Scott, Frank Sinatra, Alexis Smith, John Wayne, Mae West, William Wellman, Billy Wilder and Loretta Young. Includes two short articles, "The Unforgettable Young Man" by Joan Blondell, and "James Cagney: A Few Thoughts on the Next 2 Billion Years" by Ray Bradbury (both authors' signatures appear on the same page as their contributions); plus numerous comments from Cagney's professional colleagues and friends. The program's original owner, to whom the inscriptions are addressed, was Gene Ringgold, best-known within the movie industry as a veteran script doctor, a fact referenced in several of the inscriptions. At the time of the award, Cagney had been retired from the screen for 13 years, but was subsequently lured back for two appearances, notably in Milos Forman's RAGTIME (1981) and much less notably in the dreadful 1984 TV-movie TERRIBLE JOE MORAN. But unlike in, say, classical music, in the movies you can exit on a sour note and still leave a magnificent symphony of a career behind. Signed by Collection of Signatures .

        The Dispossessed

New York: Harper & Row,, 1974. An Ambiguous Utopia. Octavo. Original green cloth-backed boards, light green paper to covers, titles to spine in black and silver, and gilt to upper board, green endpapers. With the dust jacket. Spine faintly faded, but otherwise an exceptionally fine copy in the lightly marked jacket with some rubbing to head of spine panel. First edition, first printing. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Tom Disch, Solidarity Forever! Ursula, IX '79". For 46 years, before shooting himself on Independence Day 2008, Tom Disch wrote a "literary" kind of science fiction that set him alongside the greats of the genre, described by the critic John Clute as "perhaps the most respected, least trusted, most envied and least read of all modern first-rank S-F writers." Though there must have been mutual regard between Disch and Le Guin, it is also true that Disch's sardonic cynicism (as is more than amply laid out in his work of sci-fi criticism, "The Dreams our Stuff is Made Of") could not allow him to feel anything but contempt for Le Guin's more "affirmative" attitudes when it came to her feminist politicisation of the art form in which they both worked. In Disch's words, "Ideology breeds nonsense and ... Le Guin's work has undergone a gradual PC ossification". In this respect, Le Guin's open and outreaching inscription strikes a jarring note, and makes this copy an excellent document of disconnect between two giants of the genre.

George H.W. Bush, As Head of the U.S. China Mission, Thinks Secretary of State Kissinger's Visit to China Was Successful

George H.W. Bush, As Head of the U.S. China Mission, Thinks Secretary of State Kissinger's Visit to China Was Successful.& George H.W. Bush went to China in October 1974 as the first head of the United States Liaison Office in Beijing since the Communist takeover in 1949, and he promoted U.S./China relations. Just a month after Bush, on November 25 Secretary of State Henry Kissinger arrived in China for talks with Chou En-lai, Deng Xiaoping and Foreign Minister Qiao Guanhua on normalization of U.S.-China relations. He left for home on November 29. His visit overlapped with one of Pennsylvania Governor Milton Shapp, in China to promote trade with his state.& & Typed Letter Signed, Peking Liaison letterhead, December 3, 1974, to Shapp, expressing his satisfaction with how well Kissinger's visit had gone. "...First, I want to thank you for including Barbara and me at that lovely banquet...It was the most sumptuous feast I've ever seen....I hope our paths cross soon again in the future. Bar flew off with Secretary Kissinger to spend Christmas with the kids and she'll be back early in January. If you are in Washington, give her a ring. I will be here since I didn't feel I should leave this soon after just arriving. It wouldn't be fair to the others at USLO...I think the Kissinger visit went very well. The Chinese seemed pleased and the tone of the meetings was excellent..." He adds in holograph, referring to a small gift from Shapp, "My Milton S. pen is in my pocket!" Obtained directly from the Shapp family. Included is a retained copy of Shapp's letter to response to Bush's, along with an article on Christianity in China he sent along with it.& & Kissinger's meetings helped pave the way for President Ford's visit the following year, as relations between the two nations continued to warm.
