        Holograph manuscript of unpublished poem.

n.d - three-stanza poem written in blue ink with a few corrections in the same, pp. [1], royal 8vo, good condition ‘Limericks by Barker’ has been written in pencil at the top, but the 3 sections clearly form a poem, or part of a poem, beginning ‘Sometimes I think I’m a lady/ As pure as Sheherazade’ and constituting a rejection of the concept of Absolute Love. Undated, but the style of the verse, and the accompanying material would suggest this is from around the time of ‘Dialogues, etc.’[with:] A 2-page typed review of Edwin Muir’s ‘Selected Letters’ (Hogarth Press, 1974), with holograph corrections in red ink, signed by Barker in blue ink at foot

A Protocol for Packet Network Intercommunication

New York: IEEE Communications Society, May, 1974. New York: IEEE Communications Society, May,, 1974. [In] IEEE Transactions on Communications Volume COM-22, Number 5. Perfect bound. Original yellow wrappers, rebacked, wrappers printed in red. Housed in a colourful folding case. Repair to upper wrapper from removal of mailing label, small spot to upper wrapper, margins of contents faintly toned. A very good copy. First edition, first printing of the paper that introduced the Transmission Control Protocol, the core communications protocol for the internet. Cerf and Kahn met at UCLA, where they both worked on the early implementation of ARPANET. "In the early 1970s the ARPANET and other data networks that were beginning to be constructed around the world were hampered by the fact that each operated according to different hardware and software protocols, thus making it impossible for them to communicate with one another… This problem was solved by Cerf and Kahn's invention of the Transmission Control Protocol, which allowed the creation of an international network of computer networks, i. e., the internet (a term the authors invented around 1973 as an abbreviation for 'inter-networking of networks'… In 1978 TCP was split into TCP and IP for Internet Protocol… On January 1, 1982 ARPANET required that all connected machines use TCP/IP. One this date TCP/IP became the core internet protocol and replaced NCP entirely" (Origins of Cyberspace 528). Like Paul Baran, Cerf and Kahn are among the handful of individuals known as "the fathers of the internet" and in 1997 were awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the US's highest civilian honour, for their development of TCP/IP and their continuing leadership in computer science and communications technology. Uncommon in the original wrappers.

        The New West

N.p.: Colorado Associated University Press, (1974). N.p.: Colorado Associated University Press, (1974). Fine in a near fine jacket, very lightly toned at the edges, with a minute edge chip at the top of the front panel, a short closed tear at the top of the rear panel, and a faint crease at the front flap. A nice copy of what has become the rarest of the New Topographics books.. First Edition. Oblong quarto. Divided into sections that explore the expansion of the suburban southwest, Robert Adams' minimalist masterpiece has long been regarded as a cornerstone work of the New Topographics movement. Despite the obvious political and environmental overtones, The New West has the distinct feel of an artist's book, albeit with a conventional presentation. The first section, "Prairie," is reminiscent of Ed Ruscha, and many pictures in the subsequent chapters blur the line between social documentary and conceptual art. (Parr / Badger, v2, 25; Roth 226-227; Auer 575).

Slight spine lean, else near fine in a near fine dust jacket with just a touch of rubbing to the extremities. A very sharp copy.Dusklands is a pair of novellas in the tradition of Conrad's Heart of Darkness. The first novella "Dusklands" probes the links between the powerful and the powerless. The second novella "Vietnam Project" is narrated by a researcher investigating the effectiveness of United States propaganda and psychological warfare in Vietnam. The question of power is also explored in "The Narrative of Jacobus Coetzee," the story of an eighteenth-century Boer frontiersman who vows revenge on the Hottentot natives because they have failed to treat him with the respect that he thinks a white man deserves.

        The Power Broker

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1974.. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1974. First edition of the author's Pulitzer-Prize winning work on Robert Moses. Thick octavo, original black cloth. Signed by the author on the half-title page. Near fine in an excellent dust jacket with light wear. A nice copy of a bulky title that is seldom seen in this condition. One of the most acclaimed books of our time, winner of both the Pulitzer and the Francis Parkman prizes, the Power Broker tells the hidden story behind the shaping (and mis-shaping) of twentieth-century New York and makes public what few have known: that Robert Moses was, for almost half a century, the single most powerful man of our time in New York, the shaper not only of the city's politics but of its physical structure and the problems of urban decline that plague us today. "Surely the greatest book ever written about a city." (David Halberstam) Theodore H. White called it "A masterpiece of American reporting. It's more than the story of a tragic figure or the exploration of the unknown politics of our time. It's an elegantly written and enthralling work of art.

A reprint of the original 1943 edition, which was also published in a limited edition of forty copies. They disappear one by one, only to be reunited in the end inside the Oranienburg concentration camp. The pages are printed with bold typography that is oriented horizontally across the page spread. The documents relative to Arabia include numerous pieces on the Sherif of Mecca, the Wahhabites, the Pacha of Jeddah, Sheikh Faisal's threat to Hajj pilgrims, and British interests in the region; others relate to the Wahhabite movement in Syria, the English blockade of Mocha and various insurgencies in Yemen, as well as events in Arabic countries from Iraq and Kuweit to Algier and Morocco. "Old Austria, beyond suspicion of imperialistic designs or ambitions of colonialism, was vitally interested in preserving the Ottoman Empire and protecting both its own chartered rights and the rights of man in this enormous territory, as well as in advancing the local economic development, a process, indeed, in which the Habsburg Empire itself played an important part. The diplomatic reports reflect this situation. Striving as they did to represent the facts without any political bias, strictly according to facts, they are of especial interest to the historian. They comprise a vast area stretching from the Arabian Gulf to Morocco on the Atlantic" (introduction). - Insignificant bumping to extremeties; altogether very well preserved copy of this indispensable and rare volume of reference. - Biblos-Schriften 77. OCLC 1700363.

(South Norwalk, 1974). - 14 1/2 x 21 1/2. Sixteen leaves: 4 pages of xylographic text in blue, 1 single and 8 double spread color wood cuts on French-fold pages, with glassines. Marbled papers (3 different) on binding and endpapers, made by the artist, that reflect the book's tone. Cloth-backed boards. Vertical crease in title page, all else fine in slightly worn slipcase. No. 2 of 5 copies, signed. The book opens with a quote from Henry James: "Sea and sky seem to meet halfway, to blend their tones with a soft iridescence." In Frasconi's woodcuts, Venice floats between sea and sky, between dawn and dusk. His colors progress from a fierce predawn red to a brilliant golden sunrise in which the sky dominates, to midday colors of turquoise & golden brown and a balance between sea and sky. Gradually the blues and purples of dusk deepen. The sea predominates. The penultimate leaf quotes William Dean Howells: ".always the dark heaven with its trembling stars above." The last double spread--dark purple and black--sparkles with thousands of stars. The images shimmer with the iridescence of gold and silver metallic inks. The images fill the page; there are no margins. Frasconi's technique of layering and overprinting give these prints the look and feel of paintings. This is an "artist's book" in the truest sense. Frasconi's work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the New York Public Library, the National Gallery of Art, and the Smithsonian.
