Espingarda perfeyta, & regras para a sua operaçam . . .Lisbon, António Pedroso Galrão, 1718. 4to. With full-page frontispiece showing the crowned Portuguese coat of arms, title-page with engraved decorative cartouche, 12 engraved plates (including 4 folding) by Manuel Freire and 1 engraved illustration in the text. Contemporary limp sheepskin parchment, manuscript spine-title.

Innocencio IV, 1250; KVK & WorldCat (7 copies); Schwerdt I, p. 174; cf. Daehnhardt, Espingarda Perfeita or The Perfect Gun (London, 1974). First (and only early) edition of a rare Portuguese manual devoted primarily to gun smithing, but also discussing the use of guns in hunting. It gives detailed instructions and excellent illustrations concerning the techniques of gunsmithing ca. 1700, with views of men at work at the forge, with many tools in view, a man using a lathe, men using several other tools, decorated gunlocks and other decorative elements. One plate shows a man shooting a bird. Written by two brothers, the Lisbon gunsmiths José Fransisco and João Rodrigues, it is "the most remarkable treatise on the subject of gunmaking of this period'' (Daehnhardt in the introduction of the 1974 reprint). The Rodrigues brothers broke with tradition by setting down in print knowledge that had previously been passed down from master to apprentice within the closed circles of the trade guilds. With 1 plate detached, a few minor tears, and an occasional stain (mostly in the gutter margin), otherwise in very good condition. A rare and well-illustrated practical manual of gunsmithing.

        The Darkening Ecliptic

London: Alastair Macalpine, 1974. Quarto, colour plates, an excellent copy in original printed boards with the dust-jacket as issued (this a little rubbed). With an original crayon sketch by Nolan. Rare: with an original crayon on the front endpaper signed by Sidney Nolan. The sketch relates to the work done by Nolan relating to one of the poems in this edition, the 'Young Prince of Tyre.' This lavish publication was sponsored by the renowned (and sometimes controversial) art critic and connoisseur Alistair McAlpine. It celebrates the Ern Malley controversy through the graphic art of Sidney Nolan, who was himself closely associated with Angry Penguins at the time of the scandal. The Ern Malley poems were the work of two young Australian writers Harold Stewart and James McAuley who confected the verse and offered it for publication in Angry Penguins as a satirical critique of modernist literature. To some extent the potency of the hoax was undermined by the literary merit of The Darkening Ecliptic, now considered a seminal work of Australian literature. In this fine edition the artwork of Sidney Nolan offers a vivid and sometimes unsettling counterpoint to the poems. Although signed by Nolan, Robert Melville and Elwyn Lynn, the three main contributors, this copy not numbered. The original deluxe issue was of 50 copies, meaning that the present copy must be out of series.

        [Original Typescript Epistolary Diary]

Dutch Neck, ME. 18 May - 27 May 1974.. Fourteen pages on eight leaves, on rectos and versos of all but two of the leaves. Quarto. Dense, single-spaced typescript, with a few scattered corrections and deletions. Accompanied by three envelopes, two typed, one addressed in manuscript. Some annotations to one of the envelopes, otherwise very good. A fascinating sequence of correspondence from writer John Clellon Holmes, written for and sent to his wife, Shirley. The letters span a period of nine days and form a personal journal, of sorts, sent by Holmes to his wife during a solitary trip to a family cabin in Maine, touching on the daily routine of practical matters, observations about his own health and mental state, his reading, his writing and painting, his responses to the music to which he's been listening , and observations about the world and his friends and contemporaries. His topics range widely, from the mechanics of opening up the cabin and the extrication of his vehicle from a muddy bog, and comments on wildlife and the weather, to far more reflective matters, punctuated with skirmishes with a painful tooth and the "Zen of Mysteriously Malfunctioning Machinery." In part, he writes: "All the books are ahead of me. I've kept virginal, knowing the rainy days will come, the house-bound days. I felt nervous reading the poems. I would like to scour my mind, but have scoured all the pots & dishes instead ...." He ponders "... above all the enigma of intelligence itself, and its lust for beauty - which means shapeliness, rightness, the fitting together of elements, mortised one to the other in exactly the same way that you build a table or a house. Poems, too, partake of this fastidiousness. Williams' idea: NO IDEAS BUT IN THINGS. Olsen's conception of projective verse, one perception leading directly and immediately into the next. These notions viewed as aesthetic guides, rather than philosophy ... Religion begins when the multiplicity of life, and the mysteries of origins and destinations, surges into the consciousness, bringing a baffling sense of insignificance, awe, dread, and the taste of the grave, out of which men evolve symbols or ideas to worship. Art remains this side of the shroud, and as angry as it sometimes is it celebrates the very fatality it depicts, the moment of the flesh and the mind ... I've smoked too much and succombed [sic] to drink too early - though I've had no hangovers. I find the hard thing to jettison is the speculative tendency of the intelligence, my reflex of savoring the moment or the insight in terms of time & work, rather than simply experiencing it ...." Later: "Tried to get into Mishima, tried to get into Chinese poetry: some fixity in the consciousness wouldn't allow it ... Minor crisis of desperation, like a nagging tooth - which, by the way, I have ... Slept an hour against my tooth, and woke to Orono and Scott Momaday talking about the Kiowa Sun- Dance religion - clear and precise articulation, fine sense of Plains Indian culture, and its destruction along with the buffalo. Sad for vanished ghost faiths that were so much closer to the physical realities of this continent than anything we've brought to it ...." He comments on reading Saul Bellow and his admiration for him: "I find his soul alien to mine, and yet I admire him enormously. He is our only old- fashioned novelist of worth ..," and on his evening rereading of HAMLET: "Perfect unity of all elements, and a largeness of comprehension that astounds even the fiftieth time around...." On listening to parts of a recording of DEATH OF A SALESMAN: " ... I respect Miller in the same way that I respect Bellow - distantly but genuinely. Both men (and perhaps me, too) are nostalgic for some European past, a social order based on values, no matter how hollow, that were universally accepted. Beginning as radicals, social critics, both men make an urban, ethnic poetry out of bafflement that never quite becomes rage." Later, he has been painting, and observes: "Artists are bums - that is, they exist in filth and chaos of spirit, they seize the moment rather than the day, they giggle in their beards, they work at all hours, and sleep when they're done, and wake again, they tend to stink, their moods fluctuate worse than Maine weather, they are haunted by the unknown, and everything they do has to be done again. They paint with rain-water, or with candles in their hats; they scribble on stray sheets of paper, or compose in their inflamed brains. Dying for love, they are unlovable ...." The same day (24 May): "Duke [Ellington] died today. Heard it on the radio as I painted in half-blear at seven, and found myself crying into my paint water, though he had a good, productive, long life, and needs no one's tears. Still, the giants of music have all gone now. I missed him suddenly, because of course my appreciation of him only came these last ten-twelve years, and there I was working, and knowing a little the joy of the work, and thus fancied I knew what kept him so joyful, and -- well, the tears came swiftly, of themselves, and went away, and I finished the painting. The poem last night about a poet sick to death of death." On the 25th, he records: "Finding it hard to read - a little more SAMMLER, some of Allen's FALL OF AMERICA poems just now. Feel him keenly these days, his reponsibleness, his life's in sync at last. Miss time to talk with him the way, now and then, I miss Jack's existence somewhere in the world with a baffling ache ... Crazy jaunt to Maine to sit here in the cold wind, worrying about whether I'll be able to chow tonight, my car stuck in the mud, the house a jumble of wet socks, poems not coming (when you're shivering it jiggles your lines), a little pleased that I've painted after all, Lawrence stories unread, mushrooms hard as rocks, sense of once-fineness of body going to pieces like an old flivver in the weeds, warmth & companionship out of reach, specters coming to haunt me. Well, kill the dreariness, and so down to the beach." The daily record continues in the same vein, including an extended account of a late October visit to Provincetown, with mentions of Kerouac, Weldon Kees, and Ginsberg, and some exceptional comments about his affection for NY bars in previous years, and the ghosts that haunted them. In sum, the diary presents a lucid and spontaneous record kept during a few days of isolation, with frequent glimpses of self- analysis and literary reflection, by the Beat novelist, essayist and intimate chronicler of his contemporaries and friends: Kerouac, Ginsberg, Cassady, et al.

The Art of Dyalling in two Parts. The first shewing plainly, and in a maner mechanichally to make dyals to all plaines, either Horizontall, Murall, declining, reclining or inclining, with the theoricke of the Arte. The second how to performe the selfe same, in a more artificall kinde, and without use of Arithmeticke, together with concaue and conuex Dyals, and the inserting of the 12 signes, and the howres of any other country in any dyall, with many other things to the same Art appertaining.London: Printed by N[icholas] O[kes] for Simon Waterson, 1609.

First edition, very rare, of one of the earliest English books on dialing, the last of four books published by the famous English mathematician during his lifetime. It is unusual to find such early English scientific books in fine condition and in a contemporary binding as here. Only four other complete copies have appeared at auction in the last 50 years, all except the Horblit copy being in later bindings.<br/> &#10087;Horblit sales catalogue, Sotheby's 1974, lot 126; Frank Streeter, Christie's 2007, lot 42. Not in Macclefield or Honeyman. <br/> <i>Provenance</i>: armorial bookplate of the Rt. Hon. Algernon Capell, Earl of Essex, 1701, on verso of title, stamp of Christopher St. J. H. Daniel on two endpapers. <br/> "Like many mathematical practitioners, Blagrave found steady employment in designing, erecting and repairing sundials for churches, mansions and gardens. And since dialling was a favourite amateur pursuit, a text-book and a teacher were always in demand. Blagrave is exceptionally clear and practical, and explains the various ways in which the meridian can be established by relative positions of prominent stars or with simple improvised instruments" (Taylor, <i>Mathematical Practitioners</i>, p.327). <br/> John Blagrave (1558? - 1612) was born in Reading, but the date of his birth is unknown: probably early in the 1560s. He received his early education in his native town, later entering St. John's College, Oxford. He did not, however, take a degree, but retired to his patrimony at Southcote House (Reading) where he became a self-taught professional mathematician and became esteemed, as Anthony Wood declares, "the flower of mathematicians of his age." He accepted engagements as land-surveyor, and for the design, erection and repair of sundials. He also devised many fine astronomical instruments and surveying instruments, some of which he made and engraved himself, and made them available for sale in London at the 'Sign of the Swan' near St. Paul's or at William Matts, the stationer's, at the 'Sign of the Plough over against St. Dunstan's Church Fleet Street.' <br/> Blagrave's instruments were described in four published works: <i>The Mathematical Jewel, showing the making and most excellent use of a singular instrument so called, in that it performeth with wonderful dexterity whatever is to be done either by quadrant, ship, circle, cylinder, ring, dial, horoscope, astrolabe, sphere, globe or any such like heretofore devised</i> (1585); <i>Baculum, Familliare Catholicon sive Generale: a book of the making and use of a staff newly invented by the author, called the Familiar Staff, as well for that it may be made usually and familiarly to walk with as for that it performeth the geometrical mensurations of all altitudes</i> (1590); <i>Astrolabium Uranicum Generale: a necessary and pleasant solace and recreation for navigators in their long journeying</i> (1596), which shows him to have been an early English convert to Copernicanism; and <i>The Art of Dialling</i> (1609). He also left an unpublished autograph manuscript on mathematical topics, preserved in the library of Lambeth Palace. <br/> STC 3116.. 4to (187 x 148 mm), pp [x], 152 [i.e. 150, with some mispaginations], the errata leaf is bound at the end of the preliminaries and not at the end of the text, lacking the final blank. Woodcut and typographical headpieces and initials, numerous woodcut diagrams in text. Title-page dust-soiled and with wormtrack in lower margin neatly restored, A2-A3 slightly stained and soiled, short and diminishing wormtrack in the lower margin of 8 leaves, paper (flaw in margin of C4, otherwise a fine, very clean and wide-margined copy with several leaves uncut at the fore-edge. Seventeenth century speckled calf (foot of spine a little worn, short cracks at tops of joins), black spine gilt in compartments, red morocco label (slightly chipped), upper inner hinge reinforced. Armorial bookplate of the Rt. Hon. Algernon Capell, Earl of Essex, 1701, on verso of title; stamp of Christopher St. J. H. Daniel on two endpapers
