Lancelot du lac [Lancelot of the Lake] (Original French film poster)

1974 - Original French "affichette" poster for the 1974 film, "Lancelot du lac" (released in the US and UK as "Lancelot of the Lake") directed by Robert Bresson. Bresson's bloody take on the King Arthur legend was an expansion of the aesthetic he had already developed, where the violence that was once implied became a reality-though certainly still quite surreal. Near Fine condition, with a couple of repaired tears at the top edge and an extremely faint, almost negligible discoloration toward the top. 24 x 32 inches, rolled, on linen.

The Crowned African Crane and Numidian Crane

      - This listing is for a pair of Hayes birds. The photograph show is the Crowned African Crane. Please e-mail Arader Galleries for the photograph of The Numidian Crane. William Hayes, The Crowned African Crane and The Numidian Crane Each with measurements: 27 7/8” x 17 7/8” *Reverse images of these birds appeared in W. Hayes and family, Portraits of Rare and Curious Birds, with their descriptions form the Menagerie of Osterly Park, Vol I (1974), plates 4 and 3 respectively. William Hayes also worked according to Dixon’s method of basso relievo, but unlike Dixon and Spackman, Hayes did not derive his works from George Edwards’ drawings. Hayes used the images he had previously drawn for his own two books A Natural History of British Birds and Rare and Curious Birds in the Menagerie at Osterly Park, Middlesex for his embossed paintings. Like Dixon, Hayes did not color his own work; he hired his colorists from among his twenty-one children.

Italian Sixteenth Century Books. Harvard College Library Department of Printing & Graphic Arts Catalogue

Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, Cambridge, MA 1974 - Two volumes, small folio. Uniformly bound in contemporary brown calf, spines gilt, all edges gilt, silk moire pastedowns and endpapers, silk bookmarks. Slipcase An alarmingly fine copy of Mortimer's still-unsurpassed bibliography in brand-new condition: the paper stock is glowingly bright; the gilt edges and the leather bindings are in brilliant state. Both volumes are preserved in the same black slipcase as other copies noted by us. Clearly the text has never been read, a veritable anomaly given the significance of Mortimer's indispensible text, which is so frequently and diligently consulted by bibliographers everywhere. Mortimer here describes and illustrates 599 items, each with extremely detailed collations and authoritative notes, in many instances presented for the first time; the work is further enhanced by extensive indices of artists, printers and publishers, place of imprint, chronological and subject headings. Our communications with Martin Antonetti (Curator of the Mortimer Rare Book Room at Smith College) and John Lancaster (husband of the late Ms. Mortimer) revealed that a deluxe issue of Mortimer's indispensible text was probably never published. And so what exactly is this? The answer is obvious to the true bibliophile who understands that bibliographical works in fine bindings are among the most elusive, yet most gratifying joys of life. This is a deluxe limited edition of \"Paul Strand: Sixty Years of Photographs\" published by Aperture, New York in 1974 with a limitation of 350 copies this being number 325. From the publisher: \"Sixty Years of Photographs is one of the most comprehensive surveys of the power and force of a major photographic figure of our time. Before his death in 1976, Strand spent his last days going over his photographic prints and his many books with an eye to the completion of this volume. Because of his insistence on growth and movement toward perfection throughout his career, and to be true to his vision, the editors examined over three thousand photographs, constituting the main body of the work of Strand\'s lifetime. This volume includes an insightful biographical profile by Calvin Tomkins and excerpts from Strand\'s correspondence, interviews, and other documents.\" Measuring approximately 12 x 10 inches, the book is bound in black cloth covered boards and is housed in a matching slipcase. Accompanying the book is a custom framed hand-pulled dust-grain photogravure from the original negative. The print is entitled, \"Fisherman, Gaspè, 1937\" and has the blind-stamp of The Paul Strand Estate on the verso. The image size is approximately 7 x 6 inches with the frame measuring 17 x 14 inches. The limitation of the deluxe limited edition is 350 with this copy 325 being hand numbered on the limitation page. The book is in FINE condition with the vellum like limitation page evidencing some waviness which is endemic to this title. The slipcase is in FINE condition with a few minor white spots from where it rested on the book shelf. The print is in FINE condition with the custom frame being in FINE- condition with some minor wear to the aluminum.

        The Power Broker

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1974. First edition of the author's Pulitzer-Prize winning work on Robert Moses. Thick octavo, original black cloth. Warmly inscribed by the author in the year of publication, "To Dr. George Garham-with appreciation for his understanding and help in times of crisis Robert A. Caro Aug. 8,1974." Topstain lightly spotted, near fine in an excellent near fine dust jacket. One of the most acclaimed books of our time, winner of both the Pulitzer and the Francis Parkman prizes, the Power Broker tells the hidden story behind the shaping (and mis-shaping) of twentieth-century New York and makes public what few have known: that Robert Moses was, for almost half a century, the single most powerful man of our time in New York, the shaper not only of the city's politics but of its physical structure and the problems of urban decline that plague us today. "Surely the greatest book ever written about a city." (David Halberstam) Theodore H. White called it "A masterpiece of American reporting. It's more than the story of a tragic figure or the exploration of the unknown politics of our time. It's an elegantly written and enthralling work of art.
