        Zehn Kleine Meckerlein

(Haarlem: Carlinapers, 1974). Tall, narrow octavo. (20)pp. One of forty copies. A reprint of the original 1943 edition, which was also published in a limited edition of forty copies. In this poignant satirical variation on the "Ten Little Indians" nursery rhyme, originating from a German concentration camp during the Holocaust, the "Meckerlein" or "nuisances" are those who oppose the Nazis. They disappear one by one, only to be reunited in the end inside the Oranienburg concentration camp. The pages are printed with bold typography that is oriented horizontally across the page spread. Fine in stiff green wrappers with a tonal pattern and a printed paper label.

Galley Proofs for "Something Nothing"; Hone Tuwhare's fourth collection of poetry.

Caveman Press (1974), Dunedin - Corrected galley proofs for Hone Tuwhare's fourth book of poetry, "Something Nothing". This title was published in Dunedin by the Caveman Press in 1974. Loose long galley leaves, dimensions: 152 x 456 mm. The leaves are printed on one side only. The leaves are held loosely within cloth boards with ties and a printed paper label on the front board. The manuscript corrections consist of the removal of the comma from "Something, Nothing" at each occurence, and changes to the page numbering. There are also a few handwritten notes (presumably made by the Caveman Press publisher Trevor Reeves) on the first leaf. The proofs do not have the contents page or the copyright page, but there is a note that the contents page is to be made in the same style as that used in "Sapwood and Milk". The illustrations by Robin White, which appear in the final published book, are not included. There are a few stains to the first few leaves, and some rubbing and wear to the corners of some leaves. "Something Nothing" has some of Tuwhare's best poems, including "Ron Mason", written after the death of RAK Mason. Several poems from "Something Nothing" were used in later anthologies of Tuwhare's poems: "Selected Poems" (1980) had seven poems from Something Nothing (along with 20 from No Ordinary Sun, 5 from Come Rain Hail, 5 from Sapwood and Milk, and 2 from Making a Fist of It.) In "Year of the Dog, Poems New and Selected"(1982), 12 of the 32 poems were from Something Nothing. In "Was Wirklicher ist als Sterben" (1985), 5 of the 33 poems were from Something Nothing. ; Folio [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Österreichische Botschaftsberichte über arabische Länder. - Austrian Embassy Reports on Arab Countries.

Wien (Vienna), Österreichisches Institut für Bibliotheksforschung, Dokumentations- und Informationswesen, 1974. - 8vo. 130 pp., 1 bl. f. Publisher's original printed wrapper. The "Austrian Embassy Reports on Arab Countries": a catalogue of and guide to all relevant documents in the Vienna State Archives formerly kept at the Imperial Internuncio and later the Embassy in Constantinople from 1750 to 1918. The documents relative to Arabia include numerous pieces on the Sherif of Mecca, the Wahhabites, the Pacha of Jeddah, Sheikh Faisal's threat to Hajj pilgrims, and British interests in the region; others relate to the Wahhabite movement in Syria, the English blockade of Mocha and various insurgencies in Yemen, as well as events in Arabic countries from Iraq and Kuweit to Algier and Morocco. "Old Austria, beyond suspicion of imperialistic designs or ambitions of colonialism, was vitally interested in preserving the Ottoman Empire and protecting both its own chartered rights and the rights of man in this enormous territory, as well as in advancing the local economic development, a process, indeed, in which the Habsburg Empire itself played an important part. The diplomatic reports reflect this situation. Striving as they did to represent the facts without any political bias, strictly according to facts, they are of especial interest to the historian. They comprise a vast area stretching from the Arabian Gulf to Morocco on the Atlantic" (introduction). - Insignificant bumping to extremeties; altogether very well preserved copy of this indispensable and rare volume of reference. The first volume has a very small bump to the spine base and jacket; the second volume has a short gutter tear and a tiny bit of top edge foxing, in a jacket with a creased upper edge tear; the set is for the most part stunning, still very near fine or better with no fading.       NY, Evanston, San Francisco London: Harper & Row, Publishers, Inc. 1974 - "LETTER TO THE SOVIET LEARDERS", Inscribed and signed in blue ink by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn "To Dr. Samuel Hesser." It is very rare for him to inscribe anything due to his reclusive nature. The only signed books one normally sees by him are Limited Edition Signed Copies. This title was published in 1974 in English by Harper & Row and was translated to English and copyrighted by Writers & Scholars International, Ltd. in 1974. It was translated from Russian by Hilary Sternberg. It is a very nice copy of the book in a very nice dust jacket. Needless to say, inscribed, signed copies of his books were very rare before Solzhenitsyn's death and even more so now. When he lived in Vermont, I offered $1,000.00 each to anyone who could get him to sign two YMCA Press first editions which I have listed on Abebooks. I wrote him several times. I was told that if one caught him at the mail box that he would gratiously sign a book. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Maria, tu sais

Zurich: Adolf Hurlimann, 1974. The Illustrated Books": Reasons of health probably prevented Masson from executing original lithographs when he intended to do so (the 1960s and 1970s). In this period Masson would make, after his preparatory sketches, a finished color drawing. He would then trace the main outline of this finished maquette and apply a special red crayon on the verso of the transparent tracing paper which could be transferred to the plate as a guide. Using this guide, Masson would then draw his original lithograph freely, creating new lines and any flourishes he desired as he worked. The color maquette would further serve as a guide for drawing the color plates. Ouvrage tiré sur vélin de Rives. Les lithographies ont été tirées sur les presses de J. E. Wolfensberger, la typographie en Helvetica corps 12 est de Adolf Hurlimann, Zurich [Saphire, Cramer, 1994]

The John Gardner Collection of Nicholas Delbanco

First. A collection of 23 works by John Gardner and associated items from the collection of his friend and literary executor, the author Nicholas Delbanco. Gardner and acclaimed novelist and critic Delbanco first forged a friendship when Delbanco hosted Gardner during a reading tour at Bennington College in 1974. Delbanco ended up hiring Gardner for the English Department at the College. They and their families began a close professional and personal relationship in which each of the authors strove to critique the other's works in private and promote them in public, Gardner touting Delbanco as "one of the country's best novelists." Each acknowledged the contribution of the other in developing both their theories of literature and for specific elements of their respective works, whether it be Delbanco using Gardner's title Stillness for one of his novels or Gardner using Delbanco's writing to help clarify the husband-wife relationship in one of his own works. Delbanco's home and family became a refuge for both Gardner and his first wife during their messy divorce. Following Gardner's death in a 1982 motorcycle accident, Delbanco became Gardner's literary executor; editing and contributing an introduction to Gardner's posthumously published Stillness and Shadows. Delbanco's daughter Francesca, to whom the copy of The King of Hummingbirds is dedicated and some of the other books are inscribed (and who was formerly an occasional babysitting charge of Gardner's children), has herself published two well-received novels, Ask Me Anything and Midnight in Manhattan. A wonderful collection of interesting association copies that help detail an important literary friendship. Further details available upon request. .

In a beautiful condition. More images available on request. Jawdroppingly beautiful. According to Parr in the photobook a history vol.1: Ã’ 'Paris' is remarkable for two things, its distinctive color palette, and KimuraÕs view which teeters between conventional travel photographer and something much more original. Kimura appears to have discovered a residue of AtgetÕs ParisÉhis Paris like AtgetÕs, is a nostalgic one, a city of crumbling textures and decaying structures, autumnal mist and winter gloom. At times Kimura certainly photographs Paris as if the city were in terminal decay rather than, as so many see it, an open-air museum with some artfully distressed surfaces.Ó Beautiful early colour photography shot in 1954, 1955 and 1960. A real landmark.

Typed Poem and Autograph Note Signed to Alan Helms

Four line Typed Poem, "The Poem That Self-Destructs," below which is a note to author and model Alan Helms: "Allen [sic], Thanks for inviting me to your party. I wrote the above -- a seedling -- while at the party and felt you should have it. The girl is actual -- tall, blond hair, black trousers, white shirt. The moment of Poetry is important. Never spoke to her. Take care. Best, Gerard." The poem, needless to say, is about the face of a beautiful girl. Dated in Boston in 1974. A couple of small coffee stains have very slightly smeared a couple of letters, else near fine. Alan Helms was a handsome model who turned into an academic and wrote an autobiography of his ascendance in the New York gay scene. .
