LEWIS BALTZ: THE NEW INDUSTRIAL PARKS NEAR IRVINE, CALIFORNIA / DAS NEUE INDUSTRIEGELANDE IN DER NAHE VON IRVINE, KALIFORNIEN - SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Leo Castelli / Castelli Graphics, New York 1974 - np (110pp), 51 duotone illustrations. Designed by Thomas F. Barrow. Text in English and German. "The New Industrial Parks Near Irvine, California" is Lewis Baltz' landmark typological study that virtually single-handedly gave birth to the "New Topographics" movement. It reproduces as a full page each of the fifty-one images that comprised the 1974 Castelli Graphics photographic print portfolio of the same name that was issued in an edition of forty with six artist's proofs. A bright, most handsome example copy of the uncommon 1974 first printing (cited on pages 298-299 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", and pages 228-229 of "The Book of 101 Books") bearing the SIGNED PRESENTATION "FOR LARRY - Lewis Baltz" in black ink on the front pastedown whose dust jacket shows very slight age-toning along the top edge. This was inscribed at the time of publication to noted La Jolla art and photography bookseller Lawrence McGilvery from whom we acquired this significant tome directly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         The New Industrial Parks Near Irvine, California

Fifty one uniform black and white images of suburban industrial buildings, shot in a minimalist style, with the third picture, "Industrial Structure During Painting," looking eerily like a Mondrian. The full-page images are remarkable. This is brilliant print-making. Conceived as an homage to Breton, it was published on the 50th anniversary of the publication of Breton&#39;s SUREALIST MANIFESTO under the direction of Samuel Cesar Palui. Certainly a masterpiece of Surreal art and text, it was exhibited at the Centre Georges Pompidou in the exhibition honoring Andre Breton. <br>See an <A HREF= http://www.bookrouter.com/im/juvelisbks/9817.jpg >Image.</A><br>

        The Diviners

McClelland and Stewart, Toronto - [0-7710-4748-7] 1974, 1st edition. (Hardcover) Near fine in near fine dust jacket. 382pp. Large Octavo. Original pale green cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Light discolouration to top and bottom of boards, especially at spine. Black endpapers, faded around edges. Tight text block, very clean save for some very light stains on outer edge of text block. In dust jacket, not price clipped. Lightly worn with some very small closed tears to and slight discolouration at edges. A lovely copy. A first edition of the Governor General Award winner, Signed and inscribed by Margaret Laurence. A signature on the front free endpaper identifies this copy as previously belonging to Raymond Hernandez. The inscription, written by Laurence on the title page reads "Ray, Hope and peace, Margaret Laurence, 1974". Stapled to the top of the title page with two staples is a sheet of paper with writing in blue pen. The paper says "8 November, Friday- Dinner 6 pm." Below is the address of, and directions to, the house where Margaret Laurence lived from 1974 till her death in 1987 in Lakefield, on. This house now has a historical plaque placed there by the Lakefield Historical Society in 1993. Below this is written a phone number and below that M. Laurence. As it is written in the same hand as the inscription on the book, and the writing and name look very similar it is assumed that the note was also written by Laurence, who must have invited Hernandez for dinner while signing his copy. Looking at the back of the note reveals that the paper was originally the cover for the Trent University Staff Benefits program- which suggests that he may have been an employee of the University in Peterburough where Laurence worked as a Chancellor from 1981-1983. Placed loosely in the book are two photographs, presumed to be Raymond Hernandez. Though we were unable to attain any more information about Hernandez it is apparant that he was in some way associated with Margaret Laurence, probably on a personal level. Signed and inscribed by Margaret Laurence. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Bracebridge Hall, or The Humorists. A Medley, by Geoffrey Crayon, Gent

Printed by C. S. Van Winkle. First American edition.. Boards somewhat worn and chipped, but overall a very nice copy in the original (if somewhat sophisticated) state, enclosed in chemises and a quarter morocco slipcase.. BAL 10109; Langfeld & Kleinfield, pages 23-24; Wright I, 1380. 2 vols, 8vo in fours, original drab boards, printed paper labels, untrimmed. A continuation of Irving?s genial stories, articles and impressions gathered from his European travels, which began with The Sketch Book. Priority between the American and English issues is not known, but the American edition is the scarcer of the two and rarely found in decent condition, much less in original boards as here. Bookplates of Horace Joseph, Carroll Atwood Wilson and Clifton Waller Barrett on the front paste-downs and front free endpaper. Duplicate withdrawn from the University of Virginia. Laid into volume one is a typed note: ?This copy, although it appears to be in better condition that the Chamberlain copy, is actually a sophisticated copy. The back cover of vol. 1 is supplied and the other covers have been very skillfully repaired and re-attached.? This appears to have been supplied by Swann Galleries. This copy was lot number 398 in the Barrett Duplicates sale of 1974.

Gracie's Busy week (Share The Warm Flesh)

Copenhagen 1974 - HENRY PANZER (DEAN KOONTZ penname) - GRACIE'S BUSY WEEK (originally published under the title "SHARE THE WARM FLESH" under the Gracie Amber penname by Cameo in 1970 - which I have verified as I own both books), published by Copenhagen in 1974 (originally published in 1970 by Cameo). This book is one of a number of 30 or so books that Dean Koontz wrote for Cameo books early in his career under various pennames (like Linda Mitchell or Leonard Chris), and one book he actually published under his own name (Bounce Girl). Dean Koontz has since disavowed and otheRwise denied having ever written such books (besides Bounce Girl which was published under his own name and the Leonard Chris book "Hung"), but the evidence is undisputable: The Library of Congress confirms that Gerda Ann Koontz (Dean's wife) holds the copyrights to this book. "Gracie" is one of the five names listed in the dedication of the gothic romance "Demon Child" (which Koontz wrote under the penname of Deanna Dwyer). All five of the first names listed in the dedication of "Demon Child" have turned out to be pseudonyms that Dean had used for this particular "Adult" literature. In an article written by Dean Koontz entitled "Dean's Drive" in the sci-fi fanzine Energumen #8 (6/71), Dean Koontz admitted to writing 30 of these books in 1970 (including "Share The Warm Flesh" - this book), along with Pig Society and The Underground Lifestyles Handbook (both of which were also published by the same publisher, Cameo books in 1970). One of the titles that Dean Koontz admits to having written ("Thirteen and Ready") was written under the penname of Ann Griffin. In an early sci-fi fanzine, Beabohema #8 (1970), Dean Koontz again talked about writing these books. The authors initials (A.G.) are simply Dean's wife's initials in reverse. One of the Ann Griffin cameo books "Protest Ball," lists the author's address as Harrisburg, Pennsylviania (where Dean and his wife were living in 1970). Finally, in Dean Koontz's writing how-to book "How to Write Popular Fiction" (1972), he refers to these books and specifically to the Ann Griffin penname. Book has NO vertical spine creasing, no spine lean, no cover creases, very tiny cut along bottom edge near spine (common marking for a remaindered/imported book), no soiling or staining to covers, no former owner markings or used bookstore markings inside, no missing pages, no creased pages, pages are flat and tight and appear unread, hint of edge wear, evidence of removed price sticker to cover. Overall a VG+/FINE- book of this rare 1970s Dean Koontz pen name book. I have a number of other U.S. and U.K. Dean Koontz 1st printing hardcover/paperback/magazine appearances up for sale.         The Complete Wedding March of Erich von Stroheim

Boston: Little, Brown. (1974). First. First edition. Quarto. Some sunning to the top of the boards, a very good copy in a worn, good dustwrapper with several chips and tears. The book of the great, never completed film. A very interesting copy Inscribed by both Weinberg, and Fay Wray (who was featured in the film as Mitzi) to von Stroheim&#39;s biographer, Thomas Quinn Curtiss. The front fly has been neatly vertically creased, perhaps to make the page easier to inscribe. Weinberg&#39;s inscription reads: "for Tom more than for anyone else. Herman." Wray&#39;s reads: "Tom! Here we are in 1984 remembering Erich together. Fay Wray." .
