THE RIFLE BRIGADE CHRONICLE 1919-1985 (Lacking 1939 and 1974)

      - All first editions, original green cloth, gilt emblem of regimental crest on each volume. A fascinating source of British military history, this run of annual reports illustrated with with photographs contains details of the Regiments activities across the world from the aftermath of the First World War in 1919, Ireland in early 20s and through to the Second World War and in the post war the Regiments involvement in Malaya, Cyprus, Kenya and finally the Falklands and back to Northern Ireland. The run is generally in very good condition. The exception is the volume for 1941 which has been damp damaged and the cover misshapen, although still quite readable. The volumes for 1940 and 1942 are slightly affected. Although the format for each year remains the same, and indeed the same format is used when the Rifle Brigade is amalgamated into The Royal Green Jackets in 1966, the publishers change and, with the 1920s and 30s volumes there some changes in cloth etc. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A LONG RUN AND HEAVY SO, IN PARTICULAR, IF ORDERING FROM OUTSIDE THE UK ASK FOR A QUOTE ON POST. 8.5 x 5.5 Inches [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Carrying the Fire: An Astronaut's Journeys (Signed/Inscribed First Edition)

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, New York 1974 - First Printing. Signed and inscribed by the author directly to the first endpage. The book appears unread and is near fine in full blue cloth-covered boards, with just a minute trace of edge-toning, minor corner-tapping, and a very light discoloration to the front board. Binding square and tight. The dust jacket -- now protected by a removable Brodart archival cover -- is about near fine, with only some minor edgewear, causing mild wear to the spine-ends and several small edge tears, all professionally repaired. Clean and bright and completely intact, a very sharp collectible copy; from the esteemed modern first collection of Joy Kritzer. I ship all of my books bubble-wrapped in sturdy, very well-padded boxes, so they are guaranteed to arrive in the exact same condition as when they left.         Original Poster: "Joe Levy, Multi Millionaire Property Developer [...] Whose Side Are The Police On?"

N.p, n.d. [London: All London Squatters, ca 1974?]. Poster calling attention to the plight of those evicted from the Camden Street Squat, formerly located at 220 Camden High Street. The owner of the building, Joseph Levy (1906-1990), was a wealthy London property developer whose company Stock Conversion helped rebuild the city during the 1950's-60's after WWII. In February 1974, Levy enlisted the help of 100 police officers to evict the occupants of the Camden Street Squat, had the building boarded and locked, leaving numerous families displaced. Levy was despised by the All London Squatters, the group behind Camden Street, and according to their meeting notes (see http://www.wussu.com/squatting/als17024.htm), plans were in motion to picket both his offices as well as the local courts, though they were ultimately unsuccessful in regaining entry into the squat. A rare poster, not listed in OCLC. Original silkscreened poster, printed in navy blue on yellow stock, measuring 52cm x 65cm (20.5" x 25 5/8"). Edgeworn and creased, with tears at the margins and shallow loss to three of four corners (none affecting image); Very Good.

[Poster or broadside]: Unlock Marijuana Bring Back the $5 Fine! Vote Yes - April 1

[Ann Arbor: no publisher. 1974]. Approximately 12" x 20". Printed in red. Old faint fold, else fine. Central image of a marijuana leaf behind bars. Original campaign poster in favor of Ann Arbor charter amendment Section 16.2. In the wake of the infamous John Sinclair arrest (a ten year sentence for two joints) and the election of two Human Rights Party members to the city council, Ann Arbor passed an ordinance in 1972 making the possession of less than two ounces of marijuana a $5 fine. The state threatened to move state troopers into the city in order to enforce the stricter state laws. The city repealed the law in 1973. Voters mobilized on April 2, 1974 and passed an amendment to the city charter that reinstated the $5 fine and the law remains of the books to this day. .

        The Killer Angels

New York: David McKay Company, Inc., 1974. First edition, first printing. Here is a jacketed first edition, first printing, of Michael Shaara's celebrated Civil War novel.  Michael Shaara (1929-1988) began his career as a writer of short stories, primarily science fiction.  As a prolific short story writer he enjoyed a certain amount of success, winning several awards and having two of his stories produced as television dramas in the late 50s. In the early 60s he began to work on more ambitious projects. His first novel, The Broken Place (1968), was about a soldier who returns from the Korean War and becomes a prizefighter. Though critically praised for its style, The Broken Place was a commercial failure, which sadly set the pattern for Shaara's three novels published in his lifetime.  The Killer Angels followed, the manuscript taking Shaara seven years to complete. Rejected by the first fifteen publishers that saw it, when finally published, The Killer Angels saw little attention and received mixed reviews.  Moreover, the book had the misfortune of being a war novel published during the anti-war apex of the Vietnam War.  It is understandable, then, that it was a surprise for both Shaara and the wider literary community when The Killer Angels received the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for fiction.  Despite this win, there was not much commercial interest in this book until 1993, five years after Shaara's death, when the film based on the novel, Gettysburg, was released. This propelled The Killer Angels to the number one spot on the New York Times bestseller list and prompted an interest in Shaara's other works.  Shaara's interest in the Civil War was spurred by personal history; Shaara's great-grandfather was a member of the 4th Georgia Infantry who was injured at Gettysburg.  Seeking to learn more about his great-grandfather's experiences there, Shaara took a family trip to Gettysburg in 1966.  Perhaps Shaara's compellingly graphic and intuitive writing in The Killer Angels was informed by his own early experience as a paratrooper for the 82nd Airborne Division, an amateur boxer, a merchant seaman, and a police officer.  The Killer Angels now ranks among the most popular and acclaimed works of Civil War fiction.  Celebrated documentary film maker Ken Burns called The Killer Angels "a book that literally changed my life" and said "I had never visited Gettysburg, knew almost nothing about that battle before I read the book, but here it all came alive."  Here is the first edition, first printing in dust jacket.  Condition of both the book and dust jacket is near-fine.  All first edition points are confirmed; there are five lines each on both the top and bottom of the copyright page and no mention of subsequent printings, the binding is light blue cloth boards with a darker blue paper-covered spine, the dust jacket features a photo of the author on the rear panel, no reviews, and no bar code.  The binding remains square, clean, and tight with trivial wrinkling to the spine ends.  The contents are clean and bright with no spotting and no previous ownership marks.  The dust jacket is bright and unclipped, retaining the original $8.95 front flap price and showing no losses or tears. We note only light wear to the spine ends and corners.  The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.

        Dusklands.

Raven Press, Johannesburg 1974 - First edition of the Nobel Prize-winning author's first book. Octavo, original cloth. Slight spine lean, else near fine in a near fine dust jacket with just a touch of rubbing to the extremities. A very sharp copy. Dusklands is a pair of novellas in the tradition of Conrad's Heart of Darkness. The first novella "Dusklands" probes the links between the powerful and the powerless. The second novella "Vietnam Project" is narrated by a researcher investigating the effectiveness of United States propaganda and psychological warfare in Vietnam. The question of power is also explored in "The Narrative of Jacobus Coetzee," the story of an eighteenth-century Boer frontiersman who vows revenge on the Hottentot natives because they have failed to treat him with the respect that he thinks a white man deserves.         Winston S Churchill, His Complete Speeches 1897-1963, full set of 8 volumes

New York: Chelsea House Publishers in association with R. R. Bowker Company, 1974. First edition. Hardcover. Very good plus. During more than half a century of public life Sir Winston Churchill delivered speeches whose incisive wit, artful cadence, stinging criticism, soaring sentiment, and resolute defiance still echo today. This complete set of 8 massive volumes contains the vast majority of Winston Churchill's speeches from 1897 to 1963. The set is nearly 9,000 pages in length, takes up 18 inches of shelf space, and weighs 34 pounds. Before this incredible undertaking, many of Churchill's speeches had never been published in volume form. A great many of these impressive sets ended up in libraries, and consequently bear ex-library wear and markings. This near fine set is NOT ex-library. The red cloth bindings remain clean and bright with no sunning to the spines. The bindings are tight, with no separation of the massive text blocks. Modest external flaws are limited to minor wrinkling at spine end ends and a trivial blemish on the upper Volume VII front cover. The contents are uniformly bright and clean internally. The volumes appear unused. We find no previous ownership markings. The page edges are likewise bright. We find a trivial, barely discernible hint of spotting confined to the otherwise bright and clean page edges of five volumes. Please note that this large, heavy set may require additional postage.         Winston S. Churchill, His Complete Speeches 1897-1963, full set of 8 volumes

Chelsea House Publishers in association with R. R. Bowker Company, New York 1974 - Over the course of more than half a century of public life Sir Winston Churchill delivered speeches whose incisive wit, artful cadence, stinging criticism, soaring sentiment, and resolute defiance still echo today. This set is in very good condition and is *NOT* ex-library. We find no previous ownership markings whatsoever. The contents are uniformly bright, clean, and crisp internally, and feel unread. The top edges show very light soiling and a trace of spotting, but we find no other spotting in the set. Being finicky, we also note a small binding error to Volume I in the form of a bit of extra glue at the headband and a small dent to the Volume I text block at the center of the bottom edge. All eight bindings remain clean and tight with sharp corners. Shelf presentation is superior, with no sunning and only a bit of trivial scuffing or wrinkling of the cloth. We note the slightest warp to the Volume VIII binding which is not significant enough to easily notice or to affect how it sits on the shelf adjacent to Volume VII. Please note this large, heavy set may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A284.1, Woods/ICS A145(a), Langworth p.349. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Gather together in my name

New York: Random House 1974 - 8vo., orange cloth lettered in gilt; pictorial dust jacket; soiled spine. First edition. A presentation copy, inscribed: “Dear Sister Louise Meriwether, Joy! Maya Angelou, 4/17/14,” on the half-title page; with Meriwether’s ownership signature on the free endpaper; advance copy, with the publisher’s notice laid-in ---- Acclaimed author and tireless activist, Louise Meriwether earned a permanent place among literati whose writings reassess the African American experience. Her most enduring novels like "Daddy Was a Number Runner" (with a foreword by James Baldwin) drew high praise from her intimate friend of four decades, Maya Angelou. Meriwether contributed dust jacket blurbs for several of Angelou's works and was a dedicatee of her "The Heart of a Woman." Shortly after Angelou's death in May 2014, Meriwether recalled, "I had told her a little while ago, I said, 'Maya, you know one thing. You gonna die with your boots on,' and she said, 'Yeah, because I never take them off.'" An important association copy. LMC:a.p.o [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
