A charming original pen-and-ink sketch, entitled 'The Return with the Woman', caricaturing himself, his great-aunt, Adeline, baroness von Roeder ('Tiz') and her tiny,'rat-like', dog.

      - Approx. 11 x 12cm. A fragment only, torn-out (by Brenan himself),from a letter of his to Dora Carrington, but not posted. On the verso are eight lines in Brenan's hand describing part of the incident, but crossed-out and which differs from the version finally sent (see below). Brenan devotes a chapter to an amusing account of his aunt and her eccentricities in 'Personal Record', 1974. He stayed with her several times in her London flat and was her heir. In the letter eventually sent, dated Framlingham, August 9th, 1921, he records the incident :- A dreary evening led to a still drearier dinner at the Pall Mall Restaurant. I was not hungry and took only the hors d'oeuvres & the ice. I did not even TRY to conceal my anger, boredom and dismay. She thought I looked ill and suggested we should walk back across the park, to get the night air and save 1/6d taxi fare. We did this, and she tripped along behind me, like the mummy of some ancient Pharonic jade - half skeleton, half beetle, half clock-work, half-human and wholly vampire - with her face all painted and shrivelled, long dirt-marks under her eyes (she never washes), a little rat-like dog rolled-up in red flannel under her arm [but in the sketch the dog is walking] a long swishing silk skirt below, and on her head a black Mrs. Siddons hat.         [7" vinyl record]: Hey Joe (Version) [and] Piss Factory

[New York]: Mer Records. 1974. Original 7" vinyl 45 RPM record. Fine in modestly age-toned, about fine plain white sleeve as issued, in the original mailing envelope. Signed by Patti Smith on the white sleeve. Also included is a small, age-toned clipping from The Village Voice advertising a contemporary performance by Smith at Max's Kansas City, listing the book and record stores where this record could be purchased, and noting that it could be purchased directly for $2.50 from Sunburst Industries. Patti Smith's first vinyl single, "Hey Joe" and "Piss Factory" on the B side, produced by Lenny Kaye for Robert Mapplethorpe. The record, mailer, and clipping are housed in (and easily removable from) an acrylic stand. An exceptionally uncommon record, the original mailer is rare. This copy is addressed to R.W. Bayley in Forest Knolls, California, with the return address of The WARTOKE Concern in New York (listing the same Broadway address as Sunburst Industries), and postmarked September 26, 1974. The recipient, Roberta Bayley, is a photographer who created one of the most important photographic records of the punk scene as it germinated in New York City, and she was also the co-author (with Victor Bockris) of the first biography of Patti Smith (Patti Smith. New York: Simon & Schuster 1999). The clipping is pictured in the biography. Her iconic photographs (including the photo that graced the jacket of the first Ramones album) helped define the New York punk aesthetic. Her reminiscences in Leg McNeil and Gillian McCain's Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk, possibly the best single volume source of the early history of punk, were central to the book. .

Stated First Printing. An excellent, collector's-quality copy: clean, bright, square, and soundly bound. All tips are sharp. The textblock is immaculate; no apparent reading wear and no previous ownership markings. The dustjacket, glossy in a mylar sleeve, is very mildly rubbed and has a thin and unobtrusive scratch in the front flap; the original price (6.95) is intact. SIGNED by the author -- without further inscription -- on the title-page. ".What Harry Mitchell least expected, as he entered the darkened room, was the perverted version of 'This is Your Life' on a home movie screen, starring pillar of the community Harry Mitchell and the beautiful, golden-haired Cini, produced and presented by a trio of psychopaths and for sale at the new low price of $150,000, payable now. Otherwise worldwide distribution. What the unholy three -- the dealer in porno flicks, the trigger-happy coke head, the vodka-swilling boss of the nude model joint -- least expected was a mark who'd come on strong. He was not the straight-A stiff he had looked like at first but a tenacious dude with a spine like steel. When they threw their punch -- the shattering second home movie with its depraved, entangling climax -- he didn't even crumble. For Harry Mitchell was a tough, selfmade man. He had gone from assembly line to ownership of a multimillion dollar company, had a wife and children he loved, and had a good reputation, and he was not about to lose everything to three psycho punks with their blackmail scheme. Not even after that scheme turned to murder." Purchase with confidence: all books, gradings, and descriptions are rendered the care of a genuine bibliophile.         Untitled etching from the Santa Clause portfolio (98/175)

L'Herne, Paris 1974 - Alexander Calder (1898-1976) Etchings from the Santa Clause Portfolio Limited edition of 175 copies; each signed and numbered in pencil by the artist Published by L'Herne Paris: 1974 Signed Calder, lower right Dimensions: 20 1/4 x 26" E.E. Cummings (1894-1962), an American poet, essayist and playwright, first published his one-act play, Santa Clause, in the Harvard Wake in the spring of 1946. The play was inspired by his reunion with his estranged daughter Nancy, whom was married to Willard Roosevelt, grandson of Theodore Roosevelt. Cummings considered the play Santa Claus, which expressed his belief in the joys of love, his most successful. The allegorical Christmas fantasy recounts the tale of Santa Claus and the sinister character Death, who exchange identities in a cynical scheme to sell shares in a worthless wheel mine. A little girl, whose innocence allows her to see through their deception, finds them out. Remorseful, Santa reveals his true identity, reaffirming his faith in love and giving and reconciles with his estranged family. Alexander Calder illustrated this monumental artist book with nine full-page etchings, whose simplified linear motifs deftly convey the emotional power of the story. Each original etching is signed and number in pencil by Calder.

        The Yum Yum Book Archive

[San Francisco. 1974]. An archive of material related to the publication of Robert Crumb's The Yum Yum Book. The story was first conceived and executed by Crumb when he was 19 and later given to his first wife, Dana, as a gift. This collection represents his efforts to have the book published during the early 1970s. Contained here are: a spiral bound, hand made mock-up (measuring 5" x 3.5") assembled by Crumb himself to establish copyright, composed of 143 leaves with 295 distinct illustrations with a photograph of the original manuscript on each page, printed rectos only; a rubber stamp from Dana Crumb used to imprint the inside front cover of the mock-up which reads: "This book is the property of Dana Crumb Associates 819 Eddy Street San Francisco, California 54109 Must Be Returned Within 30 Days of Receipt"; a dummy of the hardbound book as originally conceived by Crumb with blank pages, bound in black cloth and titled in silver and blue; along with a first edition copy of the book published by Scrimshaw Press in 1975, fine in near fine dust jacket. From the collection of his lawyer Albert Morse who is mentioned on the dust jacket flap: "I gave the book as a gift to Dana when I first met her, as a token of my love. We got married shortly after. It has been hidden away all these years, along with some early sketchbooks of mine, and other sophomoric-romantic works done in the throes of horny passion. But now the time has come to review it to the world. I guess. My lawyer Albert Morse think it will sell like hotcakes and make a lot of money. I dunno."A wonderful archive of material from Crumb's first major project. .

        AUTOGRAPHED LETTER - SIGNED

1974 - MEL BLANC - Typed Letter Signed Typed letter thanking a gentleman for a recent letter that he sent. On Mel Blanc personal letterhead, measured 5.5" X 8.5" and is dated September 6, 1974. Condition: Normal mailing folds. Fine condition. "Dear Victor, Getting to record for cartoons is a very difficult thing to do. Hundreds of others are trying but very few succeeding. My advice is to do as many amature shows as you can, and maybe the right agent will hear you and contact you. Be as natural as possible. Regards, Mel Blanc". Born in San Francisco in 1908, Mel Blanc was the famed voice of popular and beloved animated cartoon characters, including Bugs Bunny, Woody Woodpecker, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Tweety Pie, Sylvester, and many others. Known as The Man of 1,000 Voices, Blanc's voice as these cartoon characters became instantly recognizable to generations of children starting with the golden era of Merrie Melodies cartoons by Warner Brothers. Among the many lines he uttered: Bugs Bunny's "Eh, what's up, Doc", "I tawt I taw a putty tat", from the tart-tongued canary Tweety; the Road Runner's "Beep, beep", Sylvester the Cat's "Thufferin' thuccotash", Woody Woodpecker's signature "Hee, hee, heh, ho. Hee, hee, heh, ho", and stutter- strewn Porky Pig's "Th-th-th-th-that's all f-f-f-folks." Note that Grace Stafford was also the voice for Woody Woodpecker in many cartoons. He began his career in show business as a musician and a radio performer in 1927, when he sang and performed on a Portland radio show called The Hoot Owls. Mel Blanc also appeared on the Jack Benny Program both on radio and television where he made his character 'Sy, the Little Mexican' famous. His first Warner Bros. character was a drunken bull in the 1937 Looney Tunes short Picador Porky. As legend has it, the actor playing Porky Pig in that short actually did stutter. A few months later, Mr. Blanc took over the role in Porky's Duck Hunt, stuttering intact, and created Daffy Duck at the same time. He went on to invent the voices of other well-known cartoon figures, such as Speedy Gonzalez, Pepe Le Pew, Tasmanian Devil, Foghorn Leghorn, Heathcliffe the cat, Speed Buggy and Yosemite Sam. His last cartoon contribution came with 1988's popular animation-live action film, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, in which he did the voices of Daffy, Tweety, Bugs and Sylvester. He died in 1989 in Los Angeles, California. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Ms. Brief mit eigenh. U. und Photographie mit eh. Widmung und U.

Madrid, 11. VII. 1974. - 1 S. Gr.-4to. Widmung an denselben Adressaten versehene Photographie (neuerer Abzug) zeigt den von Skorzeny u. a. befreiten Mussolini.

        The Mote In God's Eye

Simon & Schuster, New York 1974 - 1st edition/1st printing. 1st printing with full number line. Near fine, straight, clean book with no handwriting in it and with the silver spine lettering in fine condition, with very slight edge fading to the binding--as usual--and slight toning to text paper--as usual. There are a couple of very small, very faint spots to page edges, and a touch of shelfwear to the lower front corner; no other faults. The near fine price intact dustjacket is clean, crisp and unfaded, with a few very tiny nicks/rubs at spine fold ends and flap fold ends and one small surface rub with no color loss to the back panel gutter area but with no tears or chips. Quite a handsome example of this scarce in the 1st printing classic. I agree with Robert Heinlein's blurb on this one; it is one of the very best sci-fi books I've ever read, with a gut-wrenching ending. Not a story likely to be forgotten easily.
