The New Industrial Parks Near Irvine, California

Leo Castelli/ Castelli Graphics, New York 1974 - First edition. Hardcover. Done in a tiny edition of only 960 copies this is one of the iconic books from the New Topographic movement. A stark collection of 51 black and white images of man made spaces but all without any evidence of human life. A very near fine copy with a tiny spot to the top edge of the page block in a bright very near fine dust jacket with a slight bit of darkening to the spine. Easily one of the better copies I've seen. Livre signé par le poète, l'artiste e l'éditeur Dal Catalogo Generale dei Libri Illustrati "André Masson. The Illustrated Books": Reasons of health probably prevented Masson from executing original lithographs when he intended to do so (the 1960s and 1970s). In this period Masson would make, after his preparatory sketches, a finished color drawing. He would then trace the main outline of this finished maquette and apply a special red crayon on the verso of the transparent tracing paper which could be transferred to the plate as a guide. Using this guide, Masson would then draw his original lithograph freely, creating new lines and any flourishes he desired as he worked. The color maquette would further serve as a guide for drawing the color plates. pp. 16 quartini sciolti Ouvrage tiré sur vélin de Rives. Les lithographies ont été tirées sur les presses de J. E.         Typed Poem and Autograph Note Signed to Alan Helms

      - Four line Typed Poem, "The Poem That Self-Destructs," below which is a note to author and model Alan Helms: "Allen [sic], Thanks for inviting me to your party. I wrote the above -- a seedling -- while at the party and felt you should have it. The girl is actual -- tall, blond hair, black trousers, white shirt. The moment of Poetry is important. Never spoke to her. Take care. Best, Gerard." The poem, needless to say, is about the face of a beautiful girl. Dated in Boston in 1974. A couple of small coffee stains have very slightly smeared a couple of letters, else near fine.         Flowers in a vase on a ledge in a recess, including a red anemone, three bi-colour carnations, four old-fashioned roses, a yellow day-lily, sweet peas, and four irises (an iris susiana, and three breadless irises), with a single green irridescent beetle on the ledge to the right of the vase

A delightful tour-de-force on vellum by an 18th century English botanical artist working in the Flemish style. Simson is a rare example of an English botanical artist working in the Flemish or Dutch style, perhaps best exemplified by his contemporary Jan van Huysum. Simson's immediate contemporary in England, Georg Dionysius Ehret, painted with an overriding concern for scientific accuracy; Simson's ideal, aptly shown with this watercolour on vellum, was to create an aesthetically pleasing composition while still paying due attention to the accurate depiction of his subjects. The composition of the present work is masterful: the fluted vase stands in shadowy recess, some rose petals have fallen to the marbled shelf and are being investigated by a glistening green iridescent beetle. The beetle, representing the untamed natural world, forms a contrast to the formal man-made arrangement of the flowers in the vase. The flowers are an opulent extravaganza of colour and texture: the Susiana iris being the most dramatic bloom whose spectactularly speckled petals are balanced by the butter yellow of the day-lily, whilst the whole composition is beautifully lit by a soft morning light causing the remaining dew-drops from the fresh-picked flowers to stand out. Simson's work is known from two other still-lifes in the Broughton Collection in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, England. Both of these undated works are in a landscape format and are mounted on panels of oak veneer. Fitzwilliam Museum A First selection of Flower Drawings from the Broughton Collection (1974) item 32. Watercolour, gouache and gum arabic, on vellum laid onto a wooden panel, signed lower right "J:A: Simson. fecit 1745

        The Wandering Tattler

The Perishable Press, Driftless, WI 1974 - Tall narrow folio, half bound in blue leather with gold stamping, and cased in a black cloth covered slipcase. Number 31, in a total edition of 130. Signed by the poet, and accompanied by drawings by Ellen Lanyon. Beautifully printed by hand on handmade Shadwell paper. In my estimation, this is one of the innovative, inspiring and influential press's loveliest productions. As Veatchs Arts of the Book (much more careful and watchful readers than me) have pointed out, early editions of this title (of which this is one) end the humorous colophon with "besides being a good gynecologist he is a word freak." Copies printed later in the edition changed that wording to "being a good gynecologist, he has a good eye for details." [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Silent Cry [Signed 2x] [Ma'en Gannen no Futtoboru]

Tokyo: Kodansha International Ltd. [Printed in Japan; Distributed in the US by Harper & Row], 1974. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/fine. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing (front board's upper right corner tapped), in a Very Good + to Near Fine dust jacket (small rub to the frong panel's upper right corner, small rub to the spine tail, short tear where the lower front panel joins the flap turn), SIGNED TWICE BY KENZABURO OE on the title page, once in Japanese characters, and once in English characters; text in English. First published in Japan and there titled "Ma'en Gannen no Futtoboru" (1967), the novel centers on a man, Mitsu, whose younger brother's return from America saves the protagonist from drowning in the flood of disasters which have beset him. Mitsu's best friend has just committed suicide, and his wife has given birth to a deformed baby -- which tragic event sends her on the path to alcoholism. At the younger brother's instigation, the family then leaves the city to start a new life, returning to its ancestral village and to its ancestral past whereupon past and present interweave in their lives. Kenzaburo Oe won the 1994 Nobel Prize in Literature as an author "who with poetic force creates an imagined world, where life and myth condense to form a disconcerting picture of the human predicament today". In his speech presenting the Prize to Oe, Professor Kjell Espmark, Member of the Swedish Academy, used "The Silent Cry" as the primary exemplar of Oe's work and as a springboard to discuss Oe's other books. Signed copies of this important work are quite scarce. An altogether Very Good + to Near Fine copy of a work which significantly contributed to Oe's winning the Prize, SIGNED TWICE BY KENZABURO OE. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

Atheneum, New York 1974 - First Edition. INSCRIBED by Jean Renoir on the title page: "To Dan and Estelle Rocklin. / Best wishes, / Jean Renoir." Garson Kanin writes of the book: "Jean Renoir's book is a Jean Renoir film. I can think of no higher praise." Renoir went from sitting for his father's paintings as a boy to becoming the famed director of some of the twentieth century's most revered films, including "The Grand Illusion," "The Rules of the Game," and "The River." In short , episodic vignettes, Renoir fondly recounts many of his experiences, including the inspirational role Baroque music played in the conception of "The Rules of the Game," the on-set shooting conditions of "Swamp Water," attending anti-Hitler meetings in his youth, and memories of many filmmakers and actors.         BIRDS & ANIMALS.

Gehenna Press, 1974. - 15 x 11 3/4. 140 leaves: title, colophon, and 66 wood engravings, woodcuts, and linoleum cuts by Leonard Baskin printed one to a leaf on Troya, and interleaved with backing sheets, plus 5 blanks. Signed by Baskin in the colophon. An unbound binder's copy with 64 of the prints signed by Baskin. Housed in a handsome cloth && decorated paper traycase. Fine, with prospectus. A delightful range of Baskin's creatures from sea, land, and air. Printed by Harold McGrath in black, dark blue, dark green, and red. The image sizes range from less than an inch to 7 or 8 inches. Many of the blocks appeared in earlier works ( such as A Little Book of Natural History); some were separately issued, or used for bookplates or pressmarks & other ephemera. Both The Work of Fifty Years and the prospectus call for 65 prints (not the 66 present here). Of 50 copies printed, a few (the prospectus says 5) copies had all the prints signed. These were offered in 1974 for $2500. Apparently not all 50 sets were bound or sold. There were three binders for the edition. This set of sheets belonged to one of the binders. Rare.
