Bracebridge Hall, or The Humorists. A Medley, by Geoffrey Crayon, Gent

Printed by C. S. Van Winkle. First American edition.. Boards somewhat worn and chipped, but overall a very nice copy in the original (if somewhat sophisticated) state, enclosed in chemises and a quarter morocco slipcase.. BAL 10109; Langfeld & Kleinfield, pages 23-24; Wright I, 1380. 2 vols, 8vo in fours, original drab boards, printed paper labels, untrimmed. A continuation of Irving?s genial stories, articles and impressions gathered from his European travels, which began with The Sketch Book. Priority between the American and English issues is not known, but the American edition is the scarcer of the two and rarely found in decent condition, much less in original boards as here. Bookplates of Horace Joseph, Carroll Atwood Wilson and Clifton Waller Barrett on the front paste-downs and front free endpaper. Duplicate withdrawn from the University of Virginia. Laid into volume one is a typed note: ?This copy, although it appears to be in better condition that the Chamberlain copy, is actually a sophisticated copy. The back cover of vol. 1 is supplied and the other covers have been very skillfully repaired and re-attached.? This appears to have been supplied by Swann Galleries. This copy was lot number 398 in the Barrett Duplicates sale of 1974.

Gracie's Busy week (Share The Warm Flesh)

Copenhagen 1974 - HENRY PANZER (DEAN KOONTZ penname) - GRACIE'S BUSY WEEK (originally published under the title "SHARE THE WARM FLESH" under the Gracie Amber penname by Cameo in 1970 - which I have verified as I own both books), published by Copenhagen in 1974 (originally published in 1970 by Cameo). This book is one of a number of 30 or so books that Dean Koontz wrote for Cameo books early in his career under various pennames (like Linda Mitchell or Leonard Chris), and one book he actually published under his own name (Bounce Girl). Dean Koontz has since disavowed and otheRwise denied having ever written such books (besides Bounce Girl which was published under his own name and the Leonard Chris book "Hung"), but the evidence is undisputable: The Library of Congress confirms that Gerda Ann Koontz (Dean's wife) holds the copyrights to this book. "Gracie" is one of the five names listed in the dedication of the gothic romance "Demon Child" (which Koontz wrote under the penname of Deanna Dwyer). All five of the first names listed in the dedication of "Demon Child" have turned out to be pseudonyms that Dean had used for this particular "Adult" literature. In an article written by Dean Koontz entitled "Dean's Drive" in the sci-fi fanzine Energumen #8 (6/71), Dean Koontz admitted to writing 30 of these books in 1970 (including "Share The Warm Flesh" - this book), along with Pig Society and The Underground Lifestyles Handbook (both of which were also published by the same publisher, Cameo books in 1970). One of the titles that Dean Koontz admits to having written ("Thirteen and Ready") was written under the penname of Ann Griffin. In an early sci-fi fanzine, Beabohema #8 (1970), Dean Koontz again talked about writing these books. The authors initials (A.G.) are simply Dean's wife's initials in reverse. One of the Ann Griffin cameo books "Protest Ball," lists the author's address as Harrisburg, Pennsylviania (where Dean and his wife were living in 1970). Finally, in Dean Koontz's writing how-to book "How to Write Popular Fiction" (1972), he refers to these books and specifically to the Ann Griffin penname. Book has NO vertical spine creasing, no spine lean, no cover creases, very tiny cut along bottom edge near spine (common marking for a remaindered/imported book), no soiling or staining to covers, no former owner markings or used bookstore markings inside, no missing pages, no creased pages, pages are flat and tight and appear unread, hint of edge wear, evidence of removed price sticker to cover. Overall a VG+/FINE- book of this rare 1970s Dean Koontz pen name book. I have a number of other U.S. and U.K. Dean Koontz 1st printing hardcover/paperback/magazine appearances up for sale.         The Complete Wedding March of Erich von Stroheim

Boston: Little, Brown. (1974). First. First edition. Quarto. Some sunning to the top of the boards, a very good copy in a worn, good dustwrapper with several chips and tears. The book of the great, never completed film. A very interesting copy Inscribed by both Weinberg, and Fay Wray (who was featured in the film as Mitzi) to von Stroheim's biographer, Thomas Quinn Curtiss. The front fly has been neatly vertically creased, perhaps to make the page easier to inscribe. Weinberg's inscription reads: "for Tom more than for anyone else. Herman." Wray's reads: "Tom! Here we are in 1984 remembering Erich together. Fay Wray." .

N.p, n.d. [London: All London Squatters, ca 1974?]. Poster calling attention to the plight of those evicted from the Camden Street Squat, formerly located at 220 Camden High Street. The owner of the building, Joseph Levy (1906-1990), was a wealthy London property developer whose company Stock Conversion helped rebuild the city during the 1950's-60's after WWII. In February 1974, Levy enlisted the help of 100 police officers to evict the occupants of the Camden Street Squat, had the building boarded and locked, leaving numerous families displaced. Levy was despised by the All London Squatters, the group behind Camden Street, and according to their meeting notes (see, plans were in motion to picket both his offices as well as the local courts, though they were ultimately unsuccessful in regaining entry into the squat. A rare poster, not listed in OCLC. Original silkscreened poster, printed in navy blue on yellow stock, measuring 52cm x 65cm (20.5" x 25 5/8").         Untitled etching from the Santa Clause portfolio (98/175)

L'Herne, Paris 1974 - Alexander Calder (1898-1976) Etchings from the Santa Clause Portfolio Limited edition of 175 copies; each signed and numbered in pencil by the artist Published by L'Herne Paris: 1974 Signed Calder, lower right Dimensions: 20 1/4 x 26" E.E. Cummings (1894-1962), an American poet, essayist and playwright, first published his one-act play, Santa Clause, in the Harvard Wake in the spring of 1946. The play was inspired by his reunion with his estranged daughter Nancy, whom was married to Willard Roosevelt, grandson of Theodore Roosevelt. Cummings considered the play Santa Claus, which expressed his belief in the joys of love, his most successful. The allegorical Christmas fantasy recounts the tale of Santa Claus and the sinister character Death, who exchange identities in a cynical scheme to sell shares in a worthless wheel mine. A little girl, whose innocence allows her to see through their deception, finds them out. Remorseful, Santa reveals his true identity, reaffirming his faith in love and giving and reconciles with his estranged family. Alexander Calder illustrated this monumental artist book with nine full-page etchings, whose simplified linear motifs deftly convey the emotional power of the story. Each original etching is signed and number in pencil by Calder.

Nash Publishing, Los Angeles 1974 - First edition. Quarto. Fine in very good plus dustwrapper with one longish tear. Inscribed by Miller to his second wife June Mansfield: "For June, Merry Xmas! Henry 1974." Mansfield was perhaps Miller's most important influence, and his muse for most of his earliest and most famous works. In the text of this book Miller relates: ".I was married a few years when I finally ran into 'Mona,' in my books, you know, in the dance hall, and we were caught in bed one morning when I thought my wife had gone on a vacation. So I left her immediately and went to live with June -- 'Mona.' And it was through my new wife that I got the courage to make my final decisions and to live by them. she used to say to me, 'Look, give up that job; Start to write.'" A nice association.         THE LIBERAL AND RADICAL YEAR BOOK / THE LIBERAL YEAR BOOK [A run of 41 uniformly-bound facsimile volumes]

The Harvster Press 1972 to 1974, Brighton, UK - 8vo, A few volumes are lightly scuffed & some have a former owner's bookplate on the front endpaper; else each in vg condition. First published in 1887, ten years after the establishment in England of a national Liberal Party, this is an invaluable and comprehensive historical, statistical, and political publication. The volumes cover the years from 1887 to 1889, 1905 to 1932, and 1934 to 1939. Each volume was reproduced from the best original copy available, although the publishers (Harvester Press) observe in a prefatory note to the 1887 edition that "the original, in the British Museum, [had] been tightly re-bound and this has affected the reproduction of the inner margin of some few pages. Extensive inquiries have failed to locate an alternative copy for reprinting." Each volume typically includes complete information on the organization of the Liberal Party, composition of both Houses of Parliament, the various government departments, a summary of legislation passed the previous year, a riding-by-riding account of the previous general election, or by-elections, including candidates and vote counts, and an enormous amount of financial and budgetary data. As this is a very heavy set, we ask that you consult with us prior to placing an order, as to the options and costs to ship. Each volume bound in green buckram with gilt titles [Attributes: Hard Cover]
