[Poster]: Student Council Presents Bruce Springsteen Sun. Apr. 28 1:30PM in Clothier. Students and Guests Only

[Swarthmore, Pennsylvania: Swarthmore College. 1974]. Poster. Measuring 24" x 18". Printed in red on thin white card stock. Fine. Shrinkwrapped onto foamcore. Poster for an relatively early performance of Bruce and the E Street Band in the nascent stage of their career before they broke out with the 1975 release Born to Run. The free concert was to be held indoors at the Clothier Auditorium but because of unusually good weather was actually held outside in the small Scott Amphitheater with apparently no more than 100 people in attendance. Contemporary reports indicate that Springsteen performed a splendid show, and a splendid time was had by all. Rare. .

Leo Castelli / Castelli Graphics, New York 1974 - np (110pp), 51 duotone illustrations. Designed by Thomas F. Barrow. Text in English and German. "The New Industrial Parks Near Irvine, California" is Lewis Baltz' landmark typological study that virtually single-handedly gave birth to the "New Topographics" movement. It reproduces as a full page each of the fifty-one images that comprised the 1974 Castelli Graphics photographic print portfolio of the same name that was issued in an edition of forty with six artist's proofs. A bright, most handsome example copy of the uncommon 1974 first printing (cited on pages 298-299 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", and pages 228-229 of "The Book of 101 Books") bearing the SIGNED PRESENTATION "FOR LARRY - Lewis Baltz" in black ink on the front pastedown whose dust jacket shows very slight age-toning along the top edge. This was inscribed at the time of publication to noted La Jolla art and photography bookseller Lawrence McGilvery from whom we acquired this significant tome directly. The full-page images are remarkable. This is brilliant print-making. Conceived as an homage to Breton, it was published on the 50th anniversary of the publication of Breton's SUREALIST MANIFESTO under the direction of Samuel Cesar Palui. The Diviners

McClelland and Stewart, Toronto - [0-7710-4748-7] 1974, 1st edition. (Hardcover) Near fine in near fine dust jacket. 382pp. Large Octavo. Original pale green cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Light discolouration to top and bottom of boards, especially at spine. Black endpapers, faded around edges. Tight text block, very clean save for some very light stains on outer edge of text block. In dust jacket, not price clipped. Lightly worn with some very small closed tears to and slight discolouration at edges. A lovely copy. A first edition of the Governor General Award winner, Signed and inscribed by Margaret Laurence. A signature on the front free endpaper identifies this copy as previously belonging to Raymond Hernandez. The inscription, written by Laurence on the title page reads "Ray, Hope and peace, Margaret Laurence, 1974". Stapled to the top of the title page with two staples is a sheet of paper with writing in blue pen. The paper says "8 November, Friday- Dinner 6 pm." Below is the address of, and directions to, the house where Margaret Laurence lived from 1974 till her death in 1987 in Lakefield, on. This house now has a historical plaque placed there by the Lakefield Historical Society in 1993. Below this is written a phone number and below that M. Laurence. As it is written in the same hand as the inscription on the book, and the writing and name look very similar it is assumed that the note was also written by Laurence, who must have invited Hernandez for dinner while signing his copy. Looking at the back of the note reveals that the paper was originally the cover for the Trent University Staff Benefits program- which suggests that he may have been an employee of the University in Peterburough where Laurence worked as a Chancellor from 1981-1983. Placed loosely in the book are two photographs, presumed to be Raymond Hernandez. Though we were unable to attain any more information about Hernandez it is apparant that he was in some way associated with Margaret Laurence, probably on a personal level. Signed and inscribed by Margaret Laurence. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Bracebridge Hall, or The Humorists. A Medley, by Geoffrey Crayon, Gent

Printed by C. S. Van Winkle. First American edition.. Boards somewhat worn and chipped, but overall a very nice copy in the original (if somewhat sophisticated) state, enclosed in chemises and a quarter morocco slipcase.. BAL 10109; Langfeld & Kleinfield, pages 23-24; Wright I, 1380. 2 vols, 8vo in fours, original drab boards, printed paper labels, untrimmed. A continuation of Irving?s genial stories, articles and impressions gathered from his European travels, which began with The Sketch Book. Priority between the American and English issues is not known, but the American edition is the scarcer of the two and rarely found in decent condition, much less in original boards as here. Bookplates of Horace Joseph, Carroll Atwood Wilson and Clifton Waller Barrett on the front paste-downs and front free endpaper. Duplicate withdrawn from the University of Virginia. Laid into volume one is a typed note: ?This copy, although it appears to be in better condition that the Chamberlain copy, is actually a sophisticated copy. The back cover of vol. 1 is supplied and the other covers have been very skillfully repaired and re-attached.? This appears to have been supplied by Swann Galleries.
