The John Gardner Collection of Nicholas Delbanco

First. A collection of 23 works by John Gardner and associated items from the collection of his friend and literary executor, the author Nicholas Delbanco. Gardner and acclaimed novelist and critic Delbanco first forged a friendship when Delbanco hosted Gardner during a reading tour at Bennington College in 1974. Delbanco ended up hiring Gardner for the English Department at the College. They and their families began a close professional and personal relationship in which each of the authors strove to critique the other's works in private and promote them in public, Gardner touting Delbanco as "one of the country's best novelists." Each acknowledged the contribution of the other in developing both their theories of literature and for specific elements of their respective works, whether it be Delbanco using Gardner's title Stillness for one of his novels or Gardner using Delbanco's writing to help clarify the husband-wife relationship in one of his own works. Delbanco's home and family became a refuge for both Gardner and his first wife during their messy divorce. Following Gardner's death in a 1982 motorcycle accident, Delbanco became Gardner's literary executor; editing and contributing an introduction to Gardner's posthumously published Stillness and Shadows. Delbanco's daughter Francesca, to whom the copy of The King of Hummingbirds is dedicated and some of the other books are inscribed (and who was formerly an occasional babysitting charge of Gardner's children), has herself published two well-received novels, Ask Me Anything and Midnight in Manhattan. A wonderful collection of interesting association copies that help detail an important literary friendship. Further details available upon request. .

Tokyo: Nora Sha, 1974. First Edition. Softcover.. Near Fine/VG+. Small 4to, Unpaginated (ca 300pp). Cloth in printed slipcase with insert. Numerous Colour plates. Text in Japanese. In a beautiful condition. More images available on request. Jawdroppingly beautiful. According to Parr in the photobook a history vol.1: Ã’ 'Paris' is remarkable for two things, its distinctive color palette, and KimuraÕs view which teeters between conventional travel photographer and something much more original. Kimura appears to have discovered a residue of AtgetÕs ParisÉhis Paris like AtgetÕs, is a nostalgic one, a city of crumbling textures and decaying structures, autumnal mist and winter gloom. At times Kimura certainly photographs Paris as if the city were in terminal decay rather than, as so many see it, an open-air museum with some artfully distressed surfaces.Ó Beautiful early colour photography shot in 1954, 1955 and 1960. A real landmark.

Typed Poem and Autograph Note Signed to Alan Helms

Four line Typed Poem, "The Poem That Self-Destructs," below which is a note to author and model Alan Helms: "Allen [sic], Thanks for inviting me to your party. I wrote the above -- a seedling -- while at the party and felt you should have it. The girl is actual -- tall, blond hair, black trousers, white shirt. The moment of Poetry is important. Never spoke to her. Take care. Best, Gerard." The poem, needless to say, is about the face of a beautiful girl. Dated in Boston in 1974. A couple of small coffee stains have very slightly smeared a couple of letters, else near fine. Alan Helms was a handsome model who turned into an academic and wrote an autobiography of his ascendance in the New York gay scene. .

New York: David McKay. (1974). Second edition. Fine in a partially spine-faded, near fine dustwrapper. Inscribed by the author on the front fly: "To Reg -- Merry Christmas! Michael Shaara. Dec. 1974." With the bookplate of the recipient. Shaara was something of a difficult personality, and very seldom signed books. Because of the perfect binding, an ill-fated experiment by the publisher to lower production costs, this book is virtually always cocked, a flaw this copy does not exhibit. Basis for the movie Gettysburg and easily one of the very best and most beloved novels of the Civil War. It was also a surprise winner of the Pulitzer Prize.         This is Henry, Henry Miller from Brooklyn: Conversations with the Author from The Henry Miller Odyssey

Los Angeles: Nash Publishing. (1974). First. First edition. Quarto. Fine in very good plus dustwrapper with one longish tear. Inscribed by Miller to his second wife June Mansfield: "For June, Merry Xmas! Henry 1974." Mansfield was perhaps Miller's most important influence, and his muse for most of his earliest and most famous works. In the text of this book Miller relates: "...I was married a few years when I finally ran into 'Mona,' in my books, you know, in the dance hall, and we were caught in bed one morning when I thought my wife had gone on a vacation... So I left her immediately and went to live with June -- 'Mona.' And it was through my new wife that I got the courage to make my final decisions and to live by them... she used to say to me, 'Look, give up that job; Start to write.'" A nice association. .

Leo Castelli / Castelli Graphics, New York 1974 - np (110pp), 51 duotone illustrations. Designed by Thomas F. Barrow. Text in English and German. "The New Industrial Parks Near Irvine, California" is Lewis Baltz' landmark typological study that virtually single-handedly gave birth to the "New Topographics" movement. It reproduces as a full page each of the fifty-one images that comprised the 1974 Castelli Graphics photographic print portfolio of the same name that was issued in an edition of forty with six artist's proofs. A bright, most handsome example copy of the uncommon 1974 first printing (cited on pages 298-299 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", and pages 228-229 of "The Book of 101 Books") bearing the SIGNED PRESENTATION "FOR LARRY - Lewis Baltz" in black ink on the front pastedown whose dust jacket shows very slight age-toning along the top edge. This was inscribed at the time of publication to noted La Jolla art and photography bookseller Lawrence McGilvery from whom we acquired this significant tome directly.
