ANCIENT SKIES: Official Logbook of the Ancient Astronaut Society [98 Issues Plus Indexes & Pamphlet; Three Quarters of Full Run]

Ancient Astronaut Society 1974-1998, Park Ridge / Highland Park, IL - 4to. Majority of issues comprised of a single sheet folded to make [4] pp. Conditions range from very good to near fine, with many showing moderate toning and folding. Issue range is Vol. 1 No. 2 through Vol. 25 No. 5, with 50 of the presumed 150 of those issues (six to a volume) lacking. Also includes two indexes for Vols. 1 through 16, plus various promotional materials, and a pamphlet introducing the A.A.S. published in 1998. Remarkable set of newsletters from this society for the study of ancient aliens, founded in 1975 by Gene Philips (b. 1926), a corporate attorney with degrees from Harvard, Virginia Tech, and Northwestern. In a pamphlet introducing the organization in 1998, Philips summarizes the mission of the AAS as a "search for the evidence which will prove that civilization, technology and intelligence originated in outer space." The AAS was an international organization; the 1998 pamphlet prints a long list of members throughout the world, including many in Switzerland, Germany, Russia, Eastern Europe, and Mexico, among other locations, a large percentage of whom are listed as having PhDs in engineering, astronomy, and physics. ANCIENT SKIES consists largely of contributions from Phillips and these AAS members, all of whom in various ways posit alien involvement in ancient civilizations, especially the Maya, the Aztecs, and the Egyptians.         Historische beschryving der stadt Amsterdam.Amsterdam, Jacob Meurs, 1663. Folio. With engraved title-page, coat of arms and 72 double-page engravinged plates. Contemporary motted calf, gold-tooled spine, rebacked with original backstrip laid down.

      - Alden & Landis 663/47; I.H. van Eeghen, "Illustraties v. d. 17de Eeuwse Beschrijvingen .," in: Jaarboek Amstelodamum LXVI (1974), pp. 96-116, at pp. 100-101 & 104; Nijhoff & V. Hattum 75. First and only edition of an important and magnificently illustrated history and description of Amsterdam, written by the celebrated Dutch historian Olfert Dapper (1635/6-1689). The plates include maps of the city showing its growth from 1400 to the expansion that was still in progress at the time of publication, a city view, and views of nearly all important buildings in and around the city. The text covers politics, religious strife, trade in America and the East Indies, and is largely built around the buildings depicted. The frontispiece emphasizes the city's international nature by including figures representing the Americas, Africa and the Middle East. It was the first great account of Amsterdam since Pontanus's (Latin 1611, Dutch 1614). When Pontanus wrote, near the beginning of the Twelve-Year Truce with Spain, Amsterdam was just emerging as the Netherlands' leading city, whereas Dapper shows the city at the height of its glory.Binding rubbed along the extremities, and rebacked, as noted above. Some marginal waterstains, some marginal annotations in ink, plate with "Amsterdam van het Y aan te sien" reinforced with tape, and some minor spots. Nonetheless a good copy.

Oil on canvas on [?]original wooden stretcher, 26.75" x 22.25." Old gallery exhibition sticker to stretcher ("22434") with manuscript attribution "Thomas Augustine Arne Painted by Gainsborough." Provenance: The Mr. and Mrs. Fielding Lewis Marshall sale at Bonhams London auction house, March 28, 1974, sold as being painted by Gainsborough (more recently attributed to the British artist George Knapton).         One page autograph letter signed to Allen Walker Read

London: 19 December, 1974. Large 8vo, 27 lines, approx. 150 words, on blue "Aerogramme" stationery, address panels on verso; some wrinkling; very good. Responding to a letter Read had written him on December 11 (a xerox of which is enclosed) in which he mentions an article in the N.Y. Times on Partridge by Israel Shenker; Partridge's 1974 "Greetings" card which Read used in a lexicography class at Columbia; Partridge's Catch Phrases; and his reaching retirement age, sixty-eight. Says Partridge in response, "Israel Shenker did me proud. Ever meet him? An exceptionally intelligent felliow; courteous; prompt & efficient. Like John Lardner, who died so untimely, he's an example of the best & highest echelon of educated, cultured, witty journalists ... At the end of The Gentle Art of Lexicography, some twelve years ago, I listed a few relevant works. You might perhaps do worse than glance at it ... You'll have, I feel sure, a fruitful & profitable retirement. Catch Phrases progresses, have reached 'S' & yesterday - to-day's a day off from the BM - I wrote the entries, 'smile, damn you smile' and 'smile when you say that, stranger.' Hope to see you in 1975. All good wishes, Eric." Says Wikipedia: Allen Walker Read was an American etymologist and lexicographer, best known for his studies into the words "OK" and "fuck."

The Fly Fisher's Legacy. Including Bibliographical, Biographical and Historical Notes by Jack Heddon. {Edition-de-Luxe with Thirty Flies}.

      - London, England. Published by The Honey Dun Press Limited. 1974 (ca.1810). Large Paper Edition-de-Luxe. Book number XLIV of 55 copies published. Large 8vo. (9 ¾ x 6 ¼). 84 pp. plus four thick mat boards with beveled edges containing 30 fly patterns dressed in the style of the period circa 1810 as described by George Scotcher. Hand-coloured frontispiece tipped-in showing George Scotcher's 30 fly patterns. The book is signed on the limitation leaf by the three men who dressed the 30 flies: Thomas Clegg, Terry Griffiths and Jack Heddon. Originally it was intended that Thomas Clegg was to dress the complete set of flies, but due to other commitments he was unable to do so, completing the first six patterns. Terry Griffiths and Jack Heddon dressed the remaining twenty-four flies. The publisher has included a notice laid-in the book describing this issue. The original edition of The Fly Fisher's Legacy, circa 1810, is a rare book. Few copies were published and few remain today. In 2010, I was privileged to examine a copy of the ca. 1810 first edition in the collection of Vern Gallup (Mr. Gallup's magnificent fishing book collection was donated to Washington State University in Pullman, Washington). The deluxe edition was printed on Abbey Mills Greenfield Laid Paper. The book is elegantly bound by Aquarius in full crushed red morocco with gilt titles, raised bands on the spine, and elaborate gilt decorations and artificial flies. Marbled end papers. All edges gilt. Burgundy cloth slip case. A fabulous book. There is a small nick at the top of the spine. A fine book and slip case.

        Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

Hodder & Stoughton, London 1974 - First British edition of the author's seventh novel and what many consider to be his finest. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by John le Carre on the title page in a contemporary signature. Near fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket with some wear and rubbing to the extremities. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy garnered instant praise for Le Carre as "[t]he premier spy novelist of his time. Perhaps of all time" (Time). "Le Carre is simply the world's greatest fictional spymaster" (Newsweek). Le Carre’s inspiration drew from his experience of the revealing of the Cambridge Five traitors in the 1950s and ‘60s (Anthony, 2009), and the novel’s popularity can be seen in relation to those shocking events. In 2011, the novel was adapted into a successful film, starring Gary Oldman and Colin Firth, and it received three nominations at the 84th Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Actor. This successful production is but one of Le Carre’s numerous accolades in espionage fiction. He was awarded both the Helmerich Award and the Goethe Medal, and, in 2008, The Times ranked Le Carré 22nd on its list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945." Clean, bright with no bumps, no foxing, no nothing. The dust jacket is near fine with only one flaw: a stain on the spine just above the 'S' of Stephen King as pictured. Otherwise, not clipped and no other wear. Great value. We also have a mint condition copy in stock with an amazing inscription which, however, is priced at a considerable premium compared to this near fine copy. ‘Carrie’, the master of horror’s debut novel has been adapted multiple times as feature films, theatre plays and Broadway Musicals. It launched King’s long and successful career and the man has never stopped writing since. A landmark novel. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Two Typed Letter Signed "Daphne" to Sheila 9/10/1974 and to "Pick" dated March 9th 1981

no publisher 1974 - An excellent typed letter from Daphne du Maurier to her friend Sheila, October 9th [1974] on Kilmarth headed letter paper 2pp. Maunscript corrections to typos in the author's hand. A lovely, informal and amusing letter to her friend and very regular correspondent. Includes :- Thanking her correspondent for lunch "and for the pleasure of seeing Chapel Point again . and the Almighty Pick {the correspondent's husband} for the wonder of the Railway and the world about it. One of these days I must devise a short story with something frightful happening at the junction, possibly all the little groups of people turning alive and demo-ing against their Creator!" SEE second letter.- I do hope you got your Telegraph in time yesterday to turn to the tv programmes because on Westward at 9.10 Dave Allen the Irishman (like Jeremy Thorpe I would dine with him by candlelight) interviewed a group of eccentrics and the last of these was a man and his wife who had a private railway like Pic's and were so bemused by it that they wore Guard's clothes and lived on the spot, abd [sic] I thought what an extraordinary coincidence it was that I should have seen two of these railways in one day. The wife did look a bit mad, so perhas it is a good thing you keep yourself apart at Chapel Point - and watch out for Pic getting himself into uniform and waving a green flag.- Tomorrow the polls, and I fear Doom lies ahead (this letter dated the eve of the general election that was won by Harold Wilson with a tiny majority, during a turbulent political time in the UK, although slightly frustratingly the author does not declare which result spelled doom!A second typed letter to God Pick {both sic}, dated 7 years later than the first."Dear God Pick,I am truly flattered that you should think of me for writing a book about the railway folk coming alive. Its no good. Ideass [sic] have to ome [sic] from wthin myself. But its a lovely thought , so why not have a shot at it yourself? You will see I cant even type properly these days. Either my eyes or my brain, what there is of it! It was lively [sic] seeing both Cynthia and Ursula {author's cousins}and will you thank dear Sheila for her honeycombLove to you allDaphne.
