        One Special Summer *Autographed Edition*

New York: Delacorte Press, 1974. Hardbound. New, still in shrinkwrap. No finer copy to be found of this edition. Blue papier mache covered boards inside a similarly constructed blue papier mache covered cardboard slipcase. Unpaginated, (appx. 63 pp) with over 100 illustrations, many in color, including 21 photographic reproductions. This book is a facsimile reproduction of the travel diary kept by (then) 21-year-old Jacqueline Bouvier and her 17-year-old sister Lee on their European tour in the summer of 1951. The stories and letters describe the sisters' encounters with the various cultures of Paris, Venice, Madrid, Nice, Lucerne, London, and Rome. The stories and writings are intimate and engaging. Filled with beautiful, often funny, sketches of incidents from their travels. These are all drawn by Jacqueline (who was an art student at the time). Snapshot pictures depict the sisters in the casual fashions of the time, while Jacqueline's drawings show the sisters in beautiful, more imaginary clothing. This copy still in shrinkwrap, with the price sticker and special label indicating it to be autographed still attached. One of only 500 copies signed and slipcased by both sisters.

All the President's Men (Original screenplay for the 1976 film)

Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers, 1974. First Draft script for the 1976 film. The earliest revision we have encountered by some margin, preceding the release of the film by nearly two years. Holograph corrections peppered throughout a particular sequence (pages 98-103) wherein dialogue originally attributed to Bob Woodward has been very interestingly corrected so that it belongs to Carl Bernstein. Winner of four Academy Awards, including Best Screenplay, and nominated for four others, including Best Picture and Best Director. Tan studio wrappers, noted as FIRST DRAFT on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 14, dated August 13, 1974. Title page present, dated August 13, 1974, noted as FIRST DRAFT, with credits for books writers Bernstein and Woodward, and screenwriter Goldman. 156 leaves, mechanically reproduced.         Codex Borbonicus: Bibliothèque de l’Assemblée nationale, Paris (Y 120).: Vollstaendige Faksimile Ausg. des Codex im Originalformat. Codices selecti; XLIV.

Akademische Druck u. Verlagsanstalt, Graz. 1974 - The Codex Borbonicus is an Aztec codex written by Aztec priests shortly before or after the Spanish conquest of Mexico. The codex is named after the Palais Bourbon in France. It is held at the Bibliothèque de l’Assemblée Nationale in Paris. In 2004 Maarten Jansen and Gabina Aurora Pérez Jiménez proposed that it be given the indigenous name Codex Cihuacoatl, after the goddess Cihuacoatl. The Codex Borbonicus is a single 46.5-foot (14.2 m long sheet of amatl "paper". Although there were originally 40 accordion-folded pages, the first two and the last two pages are missing. Like all pre-Columbian codices, it was originally entirely pictorial in nature, although some Spanish descriptions were later added. There is dispute as to whether the Codex Borbonicus is pre-Columbian, as the calendar pictures all contain room above them for Spanish descriptions. Codex Borbonicus can be divided into three sections: The first section is one of the most intricate surviving divinatory calendars (or tonalamatl). Each page represents one of the 20 trecena (or 13-day periods), in the tonalpohualli (or 260-day year). Most of the page is taken up with a painting of the ruling deity or deities, with the remainder taken up with the 13 day-signs of the trecena and 13 other glyphs and deities. With these 26 symbols, the priests were able to create horoscopes and divine the future. The first 18 pages of the codex (all that remain of the original 20) show considerably more wear than the last sections, very likely indicating that these pages were consulted more often. The second section of the codex documents the Mesoamerican 52 year cycle, showing in order the dates of the first days of each of these 52 solar years. These days are correlated with the nine Lords of the Night. The third section is focused on rituals and ceremonies, particularly those that end the 52-year cycle, when the "new fire" must be lit. This section is unfinished. VERY RARE HIGH QUALITY REPRODUCTION IN THE SAME SIZE, DEFECTS AND COLORS OT THE ORIGINAL. Formato: 39 p., 39x40 cm, bross + 1 tavola costituita da 36 fogli uniti di misura 40x1420 cm ca. (40 cm x 14,2 METRI!!!), custodia editoriale di misure 44x43x5 cm. Molto buono.

        Harlem: Black Angels

Tokyo: Kodansha, (1974). Signatures in close near fine condition with evidence of slight wear as befits a working document; folded dust jacket is lightly creased and worn, else very good. Prepublication material relating to Japanese photographers is rare.. Prepublication mockup. Oblong quarto. Loose signatures laid into a folded mockup of the book's striking dust jacket. The second book by acclaimed female Japanese photographer Ruiko Yoshida, whose early seventies images of Harlem capture both the time and place with uncanny virtuosity. That this book has remained little-known in the West is a testament to the great breadth of postwar Japanese photobooks. This unique prepublication mockup features the book's contents, reproduced in blue monochrome, with the publisher's markings written throughout. Included are three promotional flyers relating to the book's publication, and 5 vintage gelatin silver prints, presumably used in the publication process, highlighted by a 10 X 8 inch reproduction of the cover image.

A Leaf from the First Edition of the First Complete Bible in English, The Coverdale Bible, 1535; With an Historical Introduction by Allen P. Wikgren, and A Census of Copies Recorded

Folio. San Francisco: Book Club of California, 1974. Folio, 45 pp., illustrated throughout including a sepia portrait of Coverdale and a folding facsimile of the original map; and with an original leaf tipped in. A very good copy, in perfect dust-jacket and with the original prospectus loosely inserted. Limited to 424 copies (including a number of ?special? copies), thus one of about 400. The leaf is Judith chapters XI?"XIII, an iconic ?Feminist? leaf as it tells of Judith beheading Holofernes. ?The account of the beheading of Holofernes by Judith is given in the deuterocanonical Book of Judith, and is the subject of more than 114 paintings and sculptures. In the story, Judith, a beautiful widow, is able to enter the tent of Holofernes because of his desire for her... For many artists and scholars, Judith's sexualized femininity interestingly and sometimes contradictorily combined with her masculine aggression. Judith was one of the virtuous women whom Van Beverwijck mentioned in his published apology (1639) for the superiority of women to men, and a common example of the Power of Women iconographic theme in the Northern Renaissance.? (Wikipedia). The census of extant copies of the Coverdale Bible was carried out by John Windle and Robert Tainsh at John Howell-Books in 1972/3 as part of a project completing two original copies, thus leaving these leaves available for a leaf book.

The Killer Angels (Plus MOVIE TIE-INS)

David McKay, New York 1974 - 1st Edition/3rd stated Printing (October 1974). SIGNED by Michael Shaara on a bookplate attached opposite half-title page (signature only). Scarce signature from Pulitzer winner. DJ rubbed with some edge-wear and a couple closed tears to front panel and small chips to corners and spine ends. $8.95 price present on DJ flap; mylar protected. Also includes laid-in three photocopies of signed letters from author to seller. One is a Sept.1981 typed signed letter, to seller from Shaara talking about his novels; how is original family name is 'Sciarra' and ends mentioning the possibility of making a movie of 'The Killer Angels': "Dear Mr. Montemarano: Your letter concening my new book, 'The Herald' was just mailed to me by McGraw-Hill--who, by the way, have done the worst job I've ever seen in publishing, and I appoligize for them. Yours was the first letter I've received, and since M-H also printed, along with 'The Herald', my first hardback, 'The Broken Place, and since you already have 'The Herald' and would like an autograph in it, I'm sending along 'The Broken Place' with an autograph, and my compliments, and hope you don't mind. 'The Broken Place' was my first book and it was put out by NAL back at the same time they discontinued hardback publishing, so nobody ever heard of it until the second book won the Pulitzer. After the Library Journal read it they called me 'a born writer' and it's autobiographical, gives me a good feeling, and I hope you like it. Simon and Schuster-Pocket Books- is putting out a collection of my short stories next spring so I guess I'm slowly coming back to life after that motorcycle accident. By the way, thought you might like to know this--my father was born in Italy and his name was 'Sciarra', and he came to the states at the age of 3. He had a Dutch teacher who began spelling his name 'Shaara', and when he brought it home that way his folks decided to leave it alone, the way Americans spelled it, and I didn't know that until I was almost forty. But my birth certificate reads 'Shaara', so I guess I'm stuck. But anyway, thought you might like to know that, your name being from the same place. Nice of you to write. Am making a movie of 'The Killer Angels'. Finally. No one could raise the money before, but maybe now.hope so. Best Michael Shaara". The second letter is xerox copy of signed letter on author's stationary: "April 14, 1982. Dear Dan: I was up in New York last week in March --cold? Hoo! Story is that Robert Redford is interested in doing the Chamberlain part of the movie, and now has put a real kick into making enough money to produce it, so maybe it'll get going. Also, Robert Duvall was given the script, asked to play Longstreet, but he wants Lee. Don't know what that means. But things are moving, and thought you'd like to know. Also, I saw the play, AMADEUS, in NY. Seen that? I recommend it. Amazing. And sure is true. Well, hope you got through that winter in one piece. Only time I like Florida, truly, is January, Feb, and parts of March. Best, Michael Shaara". The third photocopied letter is undated on Shaara's Melbourne FL personal stationay: "Sorry this took so long. I just haven't been here much. You may like to know I signed a movie option on The Herald -- although I did that four times with The Killer Angels and it hasn't worked out yet. Again -- sorry. Michael Shaara". Novel basis for 1993 film "Gettysburg". Laid-in is a photo-card SIGNED by actor MORGAN SHEPPARD who played 'Maj. General Isaac Trimble' in the film. A photo-card SIGNED by RICHARD ANDERSON (played 'General George Meade'. A photo-card SIGNED and inscribed by KEVIN CONWAY (played 'Sgt. Buster Kilrain'). Also laid-in is a color photo SIGNED and inscribed by MARTIN SHEEN (played Gen. Robert E. Lee).
