        The Darkening Ecliptic

London: R. Alastair Macalpine, 1974. Quarto, colour plates, an excellent copy in original printed boards with the dust-jacket as issued (rear panel of the jacket is rubbed, front panel a little scratched). With an original artwork by Sidney Nolan. Rare: with an original crayon sketch on the front endpaper signed by Sidney Nolan. This lavish publication was sponsored by the renowned (and sometimes controversial) art critic and connoisseur Alistair McAlpine. It celebrates the Ern Malley controversy through the graphic art of Sidney Nolan, who was himself closely associated with Angry Penguins at the time of the scandal. The Ern Malley poems were the work of two young Australian writers Harold Stewart and James McAuley who confected the verse and offered it for publication in Angry Penguins as a satirical critique of modernist literature. To some extent the potency of the hoax was undermined by the literary merit of The Darkening Ecliptic, now considered a seminal work of Australian literature. In this fine edition the artwork of Sidney Nolan offers a vivid and sometimes unsettling counterpoint to the poems.Although signed by Nolan, Robert Melville and Elwyn Lynn, the three main contributors, this copy not numbered. The original deluxe issue was of 50 copies, meaning that the present copy must be out of series.Provenance: from the collection on John Hull, formerly a studio assistant to Sidney Nolan.

Artforum, New York 1974 - 94pp, profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Cover Image by Ralph Eugene Meatyard. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. This 1974 issue (Volume XIII, Number 3) of the noted periodical "Artforum" features the notorious double-page advertisement designed and paid for by Lynda Benglis featuring a vivid color photograph of the artist naked but for a pair of white sunglasses staring at the viewer while thrusting an amply endowed latex phallus from her vaginal area. It has become one of the most iconic images of the Feminist Art movement, and one that caused tremendous controversy at the time within the magazine's editorial ranks. Additionally featured are articles on "Skyscraper Style: Art Deco New York", John Storrs, William Rubin, Lynda Benglis by Robert Pincus-Witten, Jonathan Borofsky by Lucy R. Lippard, Max Kozloff on Ralph Eugene Meatyard and Photography, as well as a slew of informative period reviews and ads. A most presentable example of what is one of the scarcest and most sought after "Artforum" issues showing some overall wear, rubbing, and handling. It has been priced accordingly.         Oregon Trail 1975-2000

Eugene: Bend in the River Council. (1974). An ambitious project conceived by Kesey (as Co-Director) and others to form a Council to address the major problems facing Oregon (and by extension, the U.S.) in a manner which would expose the issues to the public at large and allow for public input. This is a press kit cum prospectus for the council, including numerous separate pieces, e.g. a copy of a letter to Kesey from the Governor, lauding the project; a two-page set of proposals for the creation of the council and its structure and agenda; two issues of The Bend in the River Reality, a broadsheet newspaper, to which Ken Kesey and Ken Babbs, among others, contribute to Issue 1, the "Special Armory Issue," and the same contributions appear in Issue Number 2, the "Special Coast Issue"; there are two magazine-format issues of The BITR Papers, with different color covers and variant content, some of which overlaps with other items in the lot. The intent of the project was to create an educated, informed "Enlightened Constituency" that would "influence not only the state's politicians, the populace and the industry, but the future course of her sister states as well, and thus help steer this nation through the uncharted waters before us." While it may not be attributable to this particular effort, Oregon has become something of a bellwether for the rest of the region and for the country as a whole; one way or another, the project has in many ways largely come to fruition. All housed in a Bend in the River Council folder. Edge-sunned and musty; very good. Rare. First Edition. No Binding.
