        Harlem: Black Angels

Tokyo: Kodansha, (1974). Signatures in close near fine condition with evidence of slight wear as befits a working document; folded dust jacket is lightly creased and worn, else very good. Prepublication material relating to Japanese photographers is rare.. Prepublication mockup. Oblong quarto. Loose signatures laid into a folded mockup of the book's striking dust jacket. The second book by acclaimed female Japanese photographer Ruiko Yoshida, whose early seventies images of Harlem capture both the time and place with uncanny virtuosity. That this book has remained little-known in the West is a testament to the great breadth of postwar Japanese photobooks. This unique prepublication mockup features the book's contents, reproduced in blue monochrome, with the publisher's markings written throughout. Included are three promotional flyers relating to the book's publication, and 5 vintage gelatin silver prints, presumably used in the publication process, highlighted by a 10 X 8 inch reproduction of the cover image.

A Leaf from the First Edition of the First Complete Bible in English, The Coverdale Bible, 1535; With an Historical Introduction by Allen P. Wikgren, and A Census of Copies Recorded

Folio. San Francisco: Book Club of California, 1974. Folio, 45 pp., illustrated throughout including a sepia portrait of Coverdale and a folding facsimile of the original map; and with an original leaf tipped in. A very good copy, in perfect dust-jacket and with the original prospectus loosely inserted. Limited to 424 copies (including a number of ?special? copies), thus one of about 400. The leaf is Judith chapters XI?"XIII, an iconic ?Feminist? leaf as it tells of Judith beheading Holofernes. ?The account of the beheading of Holofernes by Judith is given in the deuterocanonical Book of Judith, and is the subject of more than 114 paintings and sculptures. In the story, Judith, a beautiful widow, is able to enter the tent of Holofernes because of his desire for her... For many artists and scholars, Judith's sexualized femininity interestingly and sometimes contradictorily combined with her masculine aggression. Judith was one of the virtuous women whom Van Beverwijck mentioned in his published apology (1639) for the superiority of women to men, and a common example of the Power of Women iconographic theme in the Northern Renaissance.? (Wikipedia). The census of extant copies of the Coverdale Bible was carried out by John Windle and Robert Tainsh at John Howell-Books in 1972/3 as part of a project completing two original copies, thus leaving these leaves available for a leaf book.

The Killer Angels (Plus MOVIE TIE-INS)

David McKay, New York 1974 - 1st Edition/3rd stated Printing (October 1974). SIGNED by Michael Shaara on a bookplate attached opposite half-title page (signature only). Scarce signature from Pulitzer winner. DJ rubbed with some edge-wear and a couple closed tears to front panel and small chips to corners and spine ends. $8.95 price present on DJ flap; mylar protected. Also includes laid-in three photocopies of signed letters from author to seller. One is a Sept.1981 typed signed letter, to seller from Shaara talking about his novels; how is original family name is 'Sciarra' and ends mentioning the possibility of making a movie of 'The Killer Angels': "Dear Mr. Montemarano: Your letter concening my new book, 'The Herald' was just mailed to me by McGraw-Hill--who, by the way, have done the worst job I've ever seen in publishing, and I appoligize for them. Yours was the first letter I've received, and since M-H also printed, along with 'The Herald', my first hardback, 'The Broken Place, and since you already have 'The Herald' and would like an autograph in it, I'm sending along 'The Broken Place' with an autograph, and my compliments, and hope you don't mind. 'The Broken Place' was my first book and it was put out by NAL back at the same time they discontinued hardback publishing, so nobody ever heard of it until the second book won the Pulitzer. After the Library Journal read it they called me 'a born writer' and it's autobiographical, gives me a good feeling, and I hope you like it. Simon and Schuster-Pocket Books- is putting out a collection of my short stories next spring so I guess I'm slowly coming back to life after that motorcycle accident. By the way, thought you might like to know this--my father was born in Italy and his name was 'Sciarra', and he came to the states at the age of 3. He had a Dutch teacher who began spelling his name 'Shaara', and when he brought it home that way his folks decided to leave it alone, the way Americans spelled it, and I didn't know that until I was almost forty. But my birth certificate reads 'Shaara', so I guess I'm stuck. But anyway, thought you might like to know that, your name being from the same place. Nice of you to write. Am making a movie of 'The Killer Angels'. Finally. No one could raise the money before, but maybe now.hope so. Best Michael Shaara". The second letter is xerox copy of signed letter on author's stationary: "April 14, 1982. Dear Dan: I was up in New York last week in March --cold? Hoo! Story is that Robert Redford is interested in doing the Chamberlain part of the movie, and now has put a real kick into making enough money to produce it, so maybe it'll get going. Also, Robert Duvall was given the script, asked to play Longstreet, but he wants Lee. Don't know what that means. But things are moving, and thought you'd like to know. Also, I saw the play, AMADEUS, in NY. Seen that? I recommend it. Amazing. And sure is true. Well, hope you got through that winter in one piece. Only time I like Florida, truly, is January, Feb, and parts of March. Best, Michael Shaara". The third photocopied letter is undated on Shaara's Melbourne FL personal stationay: "Sorry this took so long. I just haven't been here much. You may like to know I signed a movie option on The Herald -- although I did that four times with The Killer Angels and it hasn't worked out yet. Again -- sorry. Michael Shaara". Novel basis for 1993 film "Gettysburg". Laid-in is a photo-card SIGNED by actor MORGAN SHEPPARD who played 'Maj. General Isaac Trimble' in the film. A photo-card SIGNED by RICHARD ANDERSON (played 'General George Meade'. A photo-card SIGNED and inscribed by KEVIN CONWAY (played 'Sgt. Buster Kilrain'). Also laid-in is a color photo SIGNED and inscribed by MARTIN SHEEN (played Gen. Robert E. Lee). Also includes laid-in a SIGNED notecard from Shaara's novelist son JEFF SHAARA, author of Civil War 'Gods and Generals'. Pulitzer Prize winning novel.       [Los Angeles]: N.P., 1974. Original typed letter from Charles Bukowski to John Bryan, signed by Bukowski in black ink. Single sheet of white 8.5 x 11" stock; two old, faint folds, with a few tiny soil spots and light edge wear; Very Good+. Previously unpublished letter from Bukowski to publisher, journalist, and newspaper editor John Bryan, who for many years published Bukowski's 'Notes of a Dirty Old Man' column in the pages of OPEN CITY. A particularly raunchy letter, detailing both Bukowski's lady troubles, as well as his general sentiments toward women: "yes, here I am on Carlton Way. I am, as usual in troubled waters, soft-prey for any female, even though I eat pussy like the whorehouse master and even almost love their farts, they always find a way to stamp the heart, the gut, that last feeling inside that managed to rise for one last time...they piss on me, walk away...I am doomed, friends, not because of the female but because I dream more into her than there can be." Concluding remarks include some hysterical comments on Patricia Hearst, which we surmise are entirely made up. Letters between Bukowski and Bryan are scarce, and this one is wonderful, showing the poet in truly rare form.

        The Darkening Ecliptic

London: R. Alastair Macalpine, 1974. Quarto, colour plates, an excellent copy in original printed boards with the dust-jacket as issued (rear panel of the jacket is rubbed, front panel a little scratched). With an original artwork by Sidney Nolan. Rare: with an original crayon sketch on the front endpaper signed by Sidney Nolan. This lavish publication was sponsored by the renowned (and sometimes controversial) art critic and connoisseur Alistair McAlpine. It celebrates the Ern Malley controversy through the graphic art of Sidney Nolan, who was himself closely associated with Angry Penguins at the time of the scandal. The Ern Malley poems were the work of two young Australian writers Harold Stewart and James McAuley who confected the verse and offered it for publication in Angry Penguins as a satirical critique of modernist literature. To some extent the potency of the hoax was undermined by the literary merit of The Darkening Ecliptic, now considered a seminal work of Australian literature. In this fine edition the artwork of Sidney Nolan offers a vivid and sometimes unsettling counterpoint to the poems.Although signed by Nolan, Robert Melville and Elwyn Lynn, the three main contributors, this copy not numbered. The original deluxe issue was of 50 copies, meaning that the present copy must be out of series.Provenance: from the collection on John Hull, formerly a studio assistant to Sidney Nolan.
