        Oregon Trail 1975-2000

Eugene: Bend in the River Council. (1974). An ambitious project conceived by Kesey (as Co-Director) and others to form a Council to address the major problems facing Oregon (and by extension, the U.S.) in a manner which would expose the issues to the public at large and allow for public input. This is a press kit cum prospectus for the council, including numerous separate pieces, e.g. a copy of a letter to Kesey from the Governor, lauding the project; a two-page set of proposals for the creation of the council and its structure and agenda; two issues of The Bend in the River Reality, a broadsheet newspaper, to which Ken Kesey and Ken Babbs, among others, contribute to Issue 1, the "Special Armory Issue," and the same contributions appear in Issue Number 2, the "Special Coast Issue"; there are two magazine-format issues of The BITR Papers, with different color covers and variant content, some of which overlaps with other items in the lot. The intent of the project was to create an educated, informed "Enlightened Constituency" that would "influence not only the state's politicians, the populace and the industry, but the future course of her sister states as well, and thus help steer this nation through the uncharted waters before us." While it may not be attributable to this particular effort, Oregon has become something of a bellwether for the rest of the region and for the country as a whole; one way or another, the project has in many ways largely come to fruition. All housed in a Bend in the River Council folder. Edge-sunned and musty; very good. Rare. First Edition. No Binding.

New York: Samuel Weiser, Inc., 1974.. Hardcover. Near Fine. The Second Weiser edition, following the limited edition issued in 1972. Eleven volumes, large octavo, original decorated white cloth (Vols 1-10) and blue cloth (Vol 3, No 1). A fine facsimile reprint of the original (Vols 1-10 issued 1909-1913, Vol 3, No 1 issued 1919). Illustrated throughout. Unlike the original editions, which were generally printed on poor quality paper with fragile cardboard covers, this edition is printed on fine quality white paper and bound in attractive and durable bindings, making this edition in some ways a superior edition. Light yellowing to the bindings, a few small marks, one small tear to the top edge of the spine on Vol 10; a very good, clean set. ¶ Sometimes called "The Encyclopedia of Magick". The Equinox was the official organ of the A?A?, a magical order founded by Aleister Crowley (although material is often of import to its sister organization, Ordo Templi Orientis). Essential.

1974. CARRIE. SCREENPLAY by LARRY COHEN and PAUL MONASH. ADAPTED from the NOVEL by STEVEN KING (note that STEPHEN KING" is misspelled in this First Draft as "STEVEN KING"). This is an ORIGINAL FIRST DRAFT SCREENPLAY. At this point the film, Carrie, was in early development. This was, perhaps, a spec script under the umbrella of Producer Paul Monash. Stephen King stated that in 1974 he was paid only $2,500 for the film rights to Carrie. He added that he was only 26 at the time. that Carrie was his first book, and that in hindsight it probably helped his career a great deal. (For $2,500 I guess that the scriptwriters didn't feel obligated to spell Stephen King's name correctly in the First Draft!) This First Draft follows King's novel, however later drafts and the final script are all substantially different (see info on the production of the film at the end of this listing). Bound in blue card covers with metal binding brackets, a window is cut out of the front cover to expose the title on the title-page. The inner pages are photocopied on 8.5x11" paper (photocopying was, and still is, how original copies of a draft script were quickly produced and distributed to film producers, agents, directors, and others involved in a motion picture production), pages printed on one side only, 141 pages plus a title page. This was obviously an early copy machined copy, as the pages have numerous marks, smudges, dark areas, etc., all of which are indicative of those not very good early copy machines. On the rear page edges (the spine) is hand-written "CARRIE Copy 2 RETURN TO L.C." I assume this indicates that this is the second copy of this script and that was supposed to be returned to the writer, Larry Cohen. On the title page is handwritten at the top a "#2". The title-page has the printed information "FIRST DRAFT" "A PAUL MONASH PRODUCTION" and "STEVEN KING" (sic). There is NO date, however it is circa 1974 or early 1975. There are some editorial margin notes, and some underlining and circling of text, here and there throughout. HOWEVER, these are copied onto this "Copy 2". Only the writing on the spine and the "#2" on the title page appear to be handwritten directly onto this copy of the First Draft. The title page includes the printed name/address/phone of the ZIEGLER ROSS AGENCY, with its telephone: "CRestview 8-0070". This information on the title page probably indicates that this "First Draft" was being shipped by the ZR Agency to potential film distributors, and that the film was not yet tied to United Artists. (UA distributed the film in 1976). VERY GOOD condition, the simple metal bracketed card covers have sunning to the margins and some edge wear, the inner pages have some corner creases, there are numerous copy-machine spots, smudges and marks but the script is always legible. SCARCE - this is the only copy of this first draft screenplay of CARRIE that I have ever seen, and is my only copy. Quite a treasure for the Stephen King collector. You can read about the Film Carrie on Wikipedia and elsewhere on the Internet. Very Good

Dat. London 3. März 74. - U. 8° und 4°. 1 S. (Brief) und 1 ½ SS. (Leserbrief). [Vietnam, Thailand, and elsewhere in Asia, as well as the United States, Europe, and the Middle East, 1974. Most of the slides preserved in their original Kodak processing boxes. Some photographs loose, but most bound into albums. On the whole, in near fine condition. A large and remarkable archive of images from Vietnam and Thailand, covering the decade from the Gulf of Tonkin incident and the beginning of the buildup of American forces in Vietnam to a year before the evacuation of the American embassy. The most notable aspect of the collection are the many images showing the training of local security forces by American civil and military advisors. The collection was compiled by Jacob Harris, an employee of USAID's "Office of Public Safety" (OPS), whose task was to train Vietnamese and Thai police and counterinsurgency forces. Most of the images, in the form of photographs and photographic slides, were created by Harris, his wife, or his associates, and illustrate all aspects of life in those countries at the time. Harris travelled widely throughout the region, and the collection includes images from not only Vietnam and Thailand, but also from Laos, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macao, Malaysia, India, and elsewhere. The images also document Harris' lengthy career as a New Jersey State Trooper and his travels in other parts of the world. Jacob Joseph Harris (ca. 1910-2005), also known as "Jack" and "Jake," served for thirty-six years (1928-64) with the New Jersey State Police, eventually attaining the rank of major. Included herein is a printed card, dated Dec. 31, 1960, marking thirty years of Harris' service to the state of New Jersey. In 1964 he began what he called his "second career," taking a position with the U.S. Agency for International Development, and was stationed first in Vietnam and then in Thailand. As his postings permitted, he was joined by his wife of many years, Virginia, and she appears in a great number of the photographs. Harris was associated mostly with USAID's "Office of Public Safety," which was established in 1957 to train the police forces of America's overseas allies. The OPS was often used by the Central Intelligence Agency as a cover for its agents abroad, and operated in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia until it was shut down by Congress in 1974. At other times Harris was a part of the State Department's "Office of Missions." Whether or not Harris was directly employed by the CIA has not been ascertained, and it seems that his actual role in Vietnam and Thailand was in fact the training of local police and paramilitary forces. However, Harris' proximity to high ranking officials in the governments of South Vietnam and Thailand, as well as the nature of many of the photographs in this collection, show that he played an active and important role in training local forces to fight the Vietcong and Thai insurgents. And it is certainly true that the various departments and agencies of the U.S. government in southeast Asia at that time (those operating overtly or covertly) worked together toward their common goal. Jacob Harris ended his career at the State Department in Washington, and retired to Florida in 1975. A slide included as part of the collection explains the "Objective of U.S. Assistance to Civil Police Programs & Paramilitary Forces Overseas." Among these are "encourage humane responsible police administration; enforce the law & maintain public order with minimum use of force; counter subversion & terrorism; improve the character and image of civil police & paramilitary forces binding them more closely to the community." A large percentage of the photographs and slides in this collection show Jacob Harris with the Vietnamese and Thai officials and officers whom he worked with, trained, and advised during his decade of service. Included are images of military and political leaders, members of the Thai royal family, and members of military and police forces. A number of the photographs show police operations against members of the Vietcong or other subversive organizations, several of them showing dead bodies. One album is devoted to photographs showing a Thai operation against revolutionaries, with pictures of soldiers, dead and mangled bodies of the enemy, and members of the Thai forces recuperating and being commended at their hospital beds. This same album contains a number of typescripts in Thai that appear to describe the actions depicted. A few other photographs have manuscript ink notes (apparently in Jacob Harris' hand) identifying the scene. One, showing a dead body, is captioned "Vietcong," while another, dated April 2, 1969, shows a Thai military force (with some members identified), with a caption explaining that they were "assigned to eliminate Durae Gang." Some photographs are quite chilling in their juxtaposition, as in one album where pictures of the Harrises and their friends at the beach are displayed beside photographs of dead Vietcong soldiers. The photographs and slides show Harris and his American colleagues (and often their wives) interacting with Vietnamese and Thai officials, the local citizenry, and each other. One group of images shows a party thrown for Harris and his wife when they were reassigned from Vietnam to Thailand in 1968, in the wake of the Battle of Hue. Several images show Harris visiting villages and interacting with locals, and the difficulty of lives of Thai and Vietnamese villagers is clearly evident. Many of these images show villages populated mostly by the elderly, women, and small children. The absence of most men speaks volumes; they may have left to fight for the Army of the Republic of Vietnam or the Vietcong, or they may have lost their lives. It is clear from the images in this collection that despite the hardships encountered by American troops in Vietnam, USAID officials lived comfortable lives. Many of the photographs show them at parties, vacationing at beach resorts, lounging by swimming pools, etc. As mentioned, though stationed in Vietnam and then Thailand, Harris travelled widely throughout Asia, including to Hong Kong, Singapore, Macao, Malaysia, and Laos. He also travelled throughout the countries he was stationed in, and there are images in this archive of Saigon, the Vietnamese provincial capital of Dalat, Danang, Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Angkor Wat, and much more. Many of the images of Vietnam show a country that still bears a heavy French influence, before the Communist takeover of the 1970s. Other images show trips taken by the Harrises to Europe and the Middle East, as well as photographs documenting Harris' life in New Jersey and his earlier career with the state police. The more than 1,700 photographs are a mixture of black and white and color, ranging in size from 2 3/4 by 3 1/2 inches to 3 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches, though a handful are larger. Included are more than fifty boxes of slides, some 2,000 original slides in all. The images in the slides appear to have been taken by Harris or his wife, and are in color. As with the photographic prints, the slides are a mixture of military and non-military scenes: parades, assemblies featuring police and military officials, pictures of village life, aerial views of the Vietnamese and Thai countryside, etc. There are many images of American military airplanes and equipment, training exercises, aerial views of the countryside, several images of the de-militarized zone, and much more. One group of slides shows an anti-American parade in Vietnam, featuring signs reading "Kick out Taylor," protesting the 1964 appointment of Gen. Maxwell Taylor as ambassador to South Vietnam. As a military advisor to President Kennedy, Taylor had enthusiastically supported sending more American combat troops to Vietnam. Other slides show Jacob Harris accompanying a Vietnamese delegation on a visit to the United States, during which they went to Washington and to New Jersey, where they met with his old colleagues in the New Jersey State Police. Yet another box of slides is labeled "Hong Kong" and "Red Chinese border," containing a number of views of Hong Kong in the late 1960s, as well as views of mainland China. Other images document visits by American dignitaries to Thailand and Vietnam, and there is a series of slides featuring Harris with ARVN general Nguyen Chanh Thi, and others showing Harris and police officers at the strategically important Hai Van Pass near Danang. One group of thirty-five slides, housed in a box labeled "DMZ bombing," shows the aftermath of an air raid (presumably by U.S. forces), with bombed-out buildings and ruined villages and countryside. Other images show bombed out buildings in a more urban setting. In all, a massive archive of images documenting American activities at the local and police levels in Vietnam and Thailand over the course of a crucial decade. The Harris archive is a wealth of views of all aspects of life in the region during this period which help deepen our understanding of the effects of the American presence in southeast Asia during the era of the Vietnam War.

8 Original Draft Screenplays THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING 1950s-1974 Film Masterpiece by JOHN HUSTON

      - EIGHT ORIGINAL DRAFT SCREENPLAYS of JOHN HUSTON'S FILM THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING, 1950s - 1974. Here is a description of each: FIRST SCRIPT (1952-1957) Green paper covers, handwritten title: "Man Who Would Be KIng / 1st earliest MacKenzie version". Title page states: "The Man Who Would Be King / First Draft Screenplay by Aeneas MacKenzie". Original typed carbons on 8.5x11" onion skin paper, 138 pages. Undated, circa 1952-57. LAID-IN are 7 pages of HANDWRITTEN NOTES referring to the novella by Kipling. "MacKenzie" is written at the top of the first page. There are also a few handwritten notes and marks in the script. SECOND SCRIPT (1959) Bound in light green paper covers, printed title. Title page states: "Screenplay by Aeneas Mackenzie", dated 3-15-1959. Label of PAUL KOHNER, the Hollywood Superagent who handled John Huston's career, is at the bottom of the title page. Pages are mimeographed or photocopied. The inside rear cover states: "Quality Script Service / Hollywood 28, Calf. / HOllywood 3-1131". 121 pages, no annotations. THIRD SCRIPT (1960) Bound in Universal-International Pictures paper covers, dated "May 2, 1960". Cover states "FIRST DRAFT SCREENPLAY" (first Universal draft). Title page states "Revised First Draft Screenplay". Aeneas MacKenzie is handwritten on the title page and again at the top of page 16. At the top of the first page of the script, however, is written "go to Steve". That would most likely be STEVE GRIMES. The first 18 pages of the script are heavily revised by hand, likely by Grimes. There are a few other hand revisions here and there. 157 pages. FOURTH SCRIPT (1961) Bound in printed Universal-International Pictures paper covers. "REVISED FIRST DRAFT SCREENPLAY" dated April 27, 1961. Un-credited, but "Steve" is written on the first page, so likely by Steve Grimes. 158 pages, but the last few pages have the page numbers crossed out and renumbered by hand so that the last page now reads 123. There are some hand revisions throughout, heavy on a few pages. FIFTH SCRIPT (1964) A partial "Revised First Draft" dated March 9, 1964, by Anthony Veiller. The title page states SEVEN ARTS ASSOCIATED CORP. Consists of only the first 64 pages. It is likely that Veiller only revised this portion to see what Seven Arts would think of his revisions before proceeding (a common practice in Hollywood), or it is simply incomplete. The pages are photocopied and laid in loosely in a plain black paper folder. There are some revisions here and there, some photocopied, some in blue ink and unique to this copy. SIXTH SCRIPT (1973) By JOHN HUSTON and GLADYS HILL. Dated 10/18/73 at the top of the first page. The pages are either original typed pages or original carbons. The type imprint is tangible on the backside of each page. There are 125 pages. There are a few revisions here and there, some in black and blue pen. Bound in black paper covers, typed title label. SEVENTH SCRIPT (1974) Bound in printed "John Huston-John Foreman Production" paper covers, by "John Huston and Gladys Hill". Undated, likely an early 1974 draft. Photocopied inner pages, 129 pages, no annotations. EIGHTH SCRIPT (1974) Bound in printed "John Huston-John Foreman Production" paper covers. "Second Version / July 5, 1974", by John Huston and Gladys Hill. 129 pages, including some yellow revision pages. Condition: The scripts are all in generally GOOD to VERY GOOD condition. The covers tend to have some wear, including creases and small closed tears, especially to the portion that overhangs the inner pages. The inner pages are all bright and clear. The second script has a tear and tiny paper loss in the bottom left of the front cover, with a few stains on the front and back covers, and slight staining in the top left corner of some pages (but only in the border). The fourth script has a small stain in the top left of the cover. A wonderful, well maintained set of eight important drafts that show the 20+ year development of THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING.
