Copy #6 of 50, signed by Jorge Luis Borges and the translator, Norman Thomas di Giovanni; and of that, part of an unspecified number of copies also signed by the artist, Hugo Manning. Fine, with a faint touch of uneven fading to cloth at rear. A short story about a utopian congress, which many critics of Borges view as a political essay as well.         The Fountainhead.

Indianapolis/ New York: Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1974. Twenty-fifth Anniversary edition. Octavo, original red cloth. Inscribed by the author on the half title page, "To Demetria Ridosh -Cordially- Ayn Rand 10/23/75." Fine in a very good dust jacket with some closed tears and small chips. Although Rand was a previously published novelist and had a successful Broadway play, she faced difficulty in finding a publisher she thought right for The Fountainhead. She let Macmillian Publishing go when they rejected her demand for better publicity (Branden, 1986), and when her agent criticized the novel, she fired him and handled submissions herself (Burns, 2009). After sifting through eleven more publishers, Rand finally released The Fountainhead with Bobbs-Merrill Company in 1943. The reception was instant, and The Fountainhead became a bestseller in two years. The protagonist, Howard Roark, whose character was thought to be inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, is a young architect fighting against convention. Cited by numerous architects as an inspiration, Ayn Rand said the theme of the book was "individualism versus collectivism, not within politics but within a man's soul." Rand chose architecture as the analogy of her heady themes because of the context of the ascent of modern architecture. It provided an appropriate mode to make relevant her beliefs that the individual is of supreme value, the "fountainhead" of creativity, and that selfishness, properly understood as ethical egoism, is a virtue. Some critics consider The Fountainhead to be Rand's best novel (Merill, 1991). Indeed, philosopher Mark Kingwell described it as "Rand's best work" (Kingwell, 2006).

FLOW MY TEARS, THE POLICEMAN SAID

Doubleday & Company, Inc., Garden City 1974 - Octavo. cloth. First edition. "One day in 1988, the nation's top TV star wakes up to find himself unknown. No one has heard of him, there is no record of birth, he has no identification to show the omnipresent police. In Flow My tears, the Policeman Said. (Doubleday, $6.95), Philip K. Dick has written a proficient tale of an America taken over by data banks and bureaucrats. College students and professors have been ruthlessly separated from society, as a formeradvocate of law-and-order once proposed. In this dark future, all blacks are sterilized after the birth of their first child. By the time the hero finds himself an unperson, blacks are an endangered species, treated much as thewhooping crane is today. But the sociological comment is only background; the real problem is whether JasonTaverner is the victim of a plot or a skid-row bum who dreams that he is a TV star. A recommended slide toward solipsism." - E.H. in Psychology Today, June, 1974. 1974 Nebula and 1975 Hugo nominee. Winner of the 1975 John W. Campbell Award. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-329. Survey of Science Fiction Literature II, pp. 797-801. A fine copy in fine dust jacket. A sharp copy. (#155298) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Portrait of Auden

Randolph-Macon College: Dr. John Temple, 1974. Original. Framed in plastic. Very Good . Dr. John Temple Witt. Association Copy of a Portrait of W.H. Auden once cherished by Dr. William Gray, Chairman of the department of English at Randolph-Macon College, executed in pen-and-ink (approximately 12" by 10") by Dr. John Temple Witt, the former Head of the Art Department at the college located in Ashland, Virginia. This contemporary portrait of the distinguished visiting poet is named, numbered, signed, and dated by Witt: "Auden 5/10 JT. Witt '74." Association Copy once owned by Dr. William Gray, a close friend of W. H. Auden and dedicatee of one of his poems. It is likely that the Wystan Auden encountered the artist, Dr. John Temple Witt, Head of the Art Department at Randolph Macon College, Ashville, Virginia, when the poet stayed there during one of his readings in the early 1970s. A newspaper clipping from that time indicates that the poet looked particularly agèd, worn, wrinkled, unshaven, and dissheveled: impressions vividly conveyed with accuracy and sympathy in this rare study. The poet loved visiting the college and stayed with his longtime close friend, Dr. William Gray, Chair of the English department. This portrait is an Association Copy once cherished by Dr. Gray, who had become lifelong friends with Auden beginning from the time of his undergraduate days at Harvard. Auden dedicated "The Aliens" to Dr. Gray, to whom he signed personal letters with "Love" and "All My Love." In an address he gave during the early Seventies, Gray said of his dear and much admired friend, "For the past twenty-five years, Mr. Auden has enjoyed the reputation of being the most important and original poet of the post Eliot generation in English letters. He is also a very fine literary critic, actually generally considered to be the finest living critic of literature, and he has even turned his talent to the theatre...Mr. Auden is distinctly a poet in the grand manner...the most distinguished poet of the Twentieth century, the world's greatest living writer, Mr. W. H. Auden." The finely executed pen-and-ink over engraved portrait is framed in evocative thick, hard--but scratched and slightly age-toned--plastic that complements Auden's wrinkled and tobacco-stained face. The scratches seem to have accrued during the storage of Dr. Gray's personal property after his death, but they complement the subject. A wire hanger and screws were originally attached to the plastic back for suspension but they have been removed and stored for reattachment, as desired.
