Research archive for "The Theory and Practice of the Ciné-Roman"

Bloomington: N.p., 1974. First Edition. Archive of research materials used by William F. Van Wert in preparing his dissertation "The Theory and Practice of the Ciné-Roman" (Arno Press, 1978). Included are responses to a questionnaire and an album of film stills. Focusing on the filmmakers of the Rive Gauche movement, which slightly preceded the French New Wave and ran parallel through the 1960s, Van Wert wanted to explore the literary influence on the works of the movement's principle filmmakers, an aspect he felt separated them from their "Cahiers" counterparts. He sent the directors a twenty-question survey, to which he received four amicable responses from Alain Robbe-Grillet, Chris Marker, Henri Colpi, and Jean Cayrol. Alain Robbe-Grillet provides a generous response directly on the questionnaire, with his comments in blue and red holograph ink throughout. He describes his reactions to contemporary filmmakers, how Godard's works were influential but the work of Truffaut and Chabrol were absolutely not, and numerically ranking the importance of each aspect of filmmaking, such as the editing, soundtrack, and directing actors, and signs his form, "bien cordialement / Robbe-Grillet" at the top right corner of the first leaf. Chris Marker responds with a single leaf typed letter signed, very politely denying the existence of the Rive Gauche and dismissing the very thesis of Van Wert's dissertation, expressing regret that an undertaking as serious as this is devoted to something that does not exist. Interestingly, Marker dropped out of public view in the following decades, and autograph and manuscript material is very scarce as a result. Jean Cayrol responds with a two-leaf typed letter signed. Cayrol, who collaborated with Alain Rensais on "Night and Fog" (1955) and "Muriel" (1963), invites Van Wert to tape a conversation in Paris because of an expressed difficulty in easily articulating his ideas in writing. Henri Colpi responds with a four leaf, six page autograph letter signed on his printed stationery (some leaves recto and verso, some recto only). Colpi was the director of the 1961 Palme d'Or winning "Une aussi longue absence," and writes the most thorough response, addressing each of Van Wert's questions in detail. Included are 142 original 4 x 6 inch vernacular photographs taken during screenings held by Van Wert using prints obtained from Grove, New Yorker Films, and others. The photos were ostensibly used as visual references by Van Wert while researching the films referenced in his book. Included are photographs from three films: "L'Immortelle" (Robbe-Grillet, 1963), "L'Opera mouffe" (Agnes Varda, 1958), and "Night and Fog" (Resnais, 1955). Photographs Fine, housed in the photo binder used by Van Wert, binder Very Good plus with minor chipping and light soiling. Letters 8.5 x 11 inches to 8.5 x 11.5 inches. Very Good overall, housed in a supplied binder. Also included as reference are Van Wert's books "The Theory and Practice of the Ciné-Roman," First Edition, Near Fine with minor rubbing, and a later printing of "The Film Career of Alain Robbe-Grillet," Very Good in wrappers. Criterion Collection 238. Redemption Films 39. Vogel, pp. 81, 218, 280.

It's Always We Rambled. An Essay on Rodeo

NY: Frank Hallman. 1974. Inscribed by McMurtry to a noted Texas bookman: "This is an unfortunate mistake of mine. I suspect the limitation is erroneous./ Larry McMurtry." McMurtry doesn't indicate in which direction he believes the limitation statement errs, and this is the only time we have heard such a suggestion about this title. The stated limitation is 300 copies, each signed by the author, and while it can be assumed that like most limited editions there may have been a small print overrun to protect against damaged copies, etc., we have not heard of this book having had a significantly different number of copies than the limitation, and the fact that they were numbered seems to argue against the actual number and the limitation being very different. This is copy number 247. Fine without dust jacket, as issued. First Edition. Hardcover.

The Drowning Pool (Original screenplay for the 1975 film)

Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers / Coleytown/Turman-Foster, 1974. Revised Final Shooting script for the 1974 film. Based on the 1950 Lew Archer novel by Ross Macdonald. Private investigator Harper (Newman) returns in this sequel to the eponymous 1966 film, investigating a blackmail plot in a Louisiana bayou, where he finds himself in between an ex-lover, an oil tycoon, and the local police. In this early draft of the script Newman's character is named Lew Ryan, perhaps evidence that the production did not begin as a direct sequel to %Harper,% but simply as an adaptation of the source material. Set in Louisiana, and shot there on location. Blue studio wrappers. Title page present, dated September 16, 1974, and October 3, 1974 (Revision), noted as FINAL SHOOTING SCRIPT, with credits for screenwriter Wynn and novelist Macdonald. 128 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 130. Mechanically reproduced, on white stock, with pink, yellow, goldenrod, and green revision pages throughout, dated variously between 9/30/74 and 10/6/74.         His Complete Speeches, 1897-1963. Edited by Robert Rhodes James.

New York: Chelsea House Publishers, 1974 - 8 volumes. Recent dark red morocco, raised bands to spines, titles and lion tools to compartments gilt, single frames to boards gilt, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. A fine set. First edition, first printing. An impressive and "indispensable" collection (Langworth) of Churchill's oratory, comprising some 9,000 pages of printed text. A team of researchers combed public records and newspapers to find every public address made by Churchill, but they fell short of completeness, as some of Churchill's youthful speeches were not included and even Hansard gave up reporting some of Churchill's early efforts in the Commons, noting he was "inaudible" (Langworth, A Connoisseur's Guide to the Books of Sir Winston Churchill, 349-350).         The Martian Chronicles, the Limited Editions Club edition, signed by both the author and illustrator, one of 2000 copies, a pristine unnumbered example from the publisher's archives

Avon, Connecticut: The Limited Editions Club, 1974. Signed Limited Edition. Joseph Mugnaini. This is a pristine copy of the Limited Editions Club edition, one of 2000 copies signed by both the author and the illustrator. This particular copy is unnumbered, acquired from the publisherÂ’s archives and hence in flawless condition in the original glassine wrapper and slipcase. The edition is bound in full silk-screened black buckram with endpapers and slipcase in matching design and black speckled page edges that complement the binding, slipcase, and endpaper design. Illustrated with eleven color lithographs drawn on plates by Joseph Mugnaini and additional black and white illustrations at chapter headings and within the text. Signed by both Ray Bradbury and Joseph Mugnaini on the colophon page. The substantial Quarto volume measures 10.75 by 7.75 inches. A strikingly beautiful edition of BradburyÂ’s compelling vision of a Mars that was, supplanted by a Mars that humans colonized and squandered, and thereafter the intimation of a Mars that might be, all of this a backdrop for the destructive energies and perennial seeds of hope endemic to humanity. When NASAÂ’s Phoenix Mars lander landed on the Martian surface in 2008, it carried a DVD containing The Martian Chronicles. The learned realities of a far more sterile Mars than Bradbury imagined for us have not diminished BradburyÂ’s tale. From Martin GardnerÂ’s Introduction to this Limited Editions Club edition: “Critics have said it is BradburyÂ’s best book because there is more science in it than in his other books. I believe the opposite to be trueÂ… That is not a weaknessÂ… That is why, long after Mars has become a hearth to us, The Martian Chronicles will keep on stirring imaginations, arousing laughter and tears, and haunting the minds of those who have not forgotten how to read.” This copy is immaculate. The volume shows no signs of wear or handling. The original glassine wrapper shows some toning and wrinkling attributable to age, but is entirely complete with no loss or tears. The slipcase is likewise pristine, with only a hint of shelf scuffing to the bottom edge. A beautiful copy of a striking edition. Bibliographic reference: LEC 480

        1917-1974. [History of the Kornilov Regiment. 1917 - 1974].

      Parizh 1974 - Octavo (24 x 16.5 cm). 670 pp., decorated throughout. White publisher's wrappers; soiled, small tears to spine. First and only edition; "very rare" (Savine). Detailed account of the history of the Kornilov regiment, one of the earliest formed voluntary divisions of the White Army. The self-published work was compiled by Levitov (1893-1982), the Colonel of the Kornilov regiment, whose first-hand experience and memories are combined here with academic research and interviews with participants of the events. He describes the formation of the regiment in May-June 1917, the epic 'Ice March' into the empty steppe towards the Kuban, the siege of Ekaterinodar, the death of General Kornilov and transfer of the command to General Denikin, march towards Moscow, relocation of the White Army to Crimea and further life in exile. The work benefits from multiple photographs, plans and historical documents reproduced along the text. Not in the collection of Russian National Library (RNB). __________________________________________ ??????????? ???? ?? ??????? ????????????? ???????? ????? ???????????? ???? ??? ?????? ????? ????????????, ? ?????? ??? ????? ???????????? ?? ??? ? ????????? ?? ??????? ????????? ????????? ? ????????? ??????????????? ????? ????? ????? ?????? ? ????? ?? ???? ???????? ????????? ????????????? ????? ?.? ??????? ? ??? ??????????? ?????? ?????? ?????, ????? ????????? ???????? ??? ??????? ?????, ??????? ? ??? ????????? ? 17 ????, ????? ? ?????? ????????? ?????, ??????????? ?? ????????????, ?????? ???????? ????????? ? ?????????? ? ???????????? ???????? ????????, 2-? ????????? ?????, ??????????? ???, ???????? ?? ??????, ??????????? ? ???????????? ?????, ?????????? ? ????, ??? ????? ?? - ??? ?? ????????, ???????? ?????? ? ???????, ????????????? ????????, ????? ?????? ????? ? ????? ?????????? ????? ?????? ????????? ????????? ?????, ??????????? ????????????? ???, ?????? ?????, ?????????? ????????? ? ???????????? ?? ??? ???????? ?????????, ??????? ?????? ??????????? ? ???? - 48000 ???????, ? ????? ???????????? ???????? ?????????? ??????????? ???????, ????? ? ????? ????????? ??????????? ? ??????, ????? ??? ????????? ?????????? ?????, ????? ? ????? ?????? ???????? ????? ????? ???????????         The Sixteenth Round: From Number 1 Contender to #45472.

New York: Viking Press, 1974. First edition. Octavo, original half cloth. Light wear to the bottom cloth, very good in a very good dust jacket with a few small closed tears to the spine. Signed by the author "Rubin Hurricane Carter" on the half-title page. Uncommon signed. Written from prison and first published in 1974, The Sixteenth Round chronicles Hurricane's journey from the ring to solitary confinement. The book was his cry for help to the public, an attempt to set the record straight and force a new trial. Bob Dylan wrote his classic anthem "Hurricane" about his struggle, and Muhammad Ali and thousands of others took up his cause. The power of Carter's voice, as well as his ironic humor, makes this an eloquent, soul-stirring account of a remarkable life. "When they come to list the greatest boxers, Hurricane's name isn't likely to pop up in the Top 10. But when they come to list the greatest figures of the 20th century, he'll be alone at the peak" (The Boston Globe).

        ADVENTURES OF FINSPOT

San Bernardino: D-J Books, 1974. From the book's prospectus, issued just before the publication of the book: "In 1934, Zane Grey wrote a beautiful story for his daughter, Betty Zane, under the titile, The Adventures of Finspot, and commissioned a well-known artist to ilustrate it. This previously unpublished book, by the most famous of all western authors, has been made available, for the first time, and we have been given the privilege of publishing it... A limited edition, of which 900 copies will be available for sale, will be ready for distribution about the 15th of May, 1974. Designing and printing has been done by the Sagebrush Press. This limited edition has been composed of hand set type especially purchased for the book and printed on fine, long-life paper...Illustrations, by the artist Sverre Holnsen, reproduced in full color, will be available in this edition, only." The story is preceded by an introduction by Betty Zane Grosso. (It has been said that while 950 were printed, many or most were lost during a flood, and judging by the scarcity, this could well be true.) Fine copy. While it is not signed by the author, of course, it does have an interesting ink note on the front free endpaper: "To Loren - Merry Christmas - With love - Betty," the book having been given to Loren by Betty Zane. The authenticity of this is pretty well established, as we purchased this book from Loren. (Copy # 10 of 950.) . First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine. Illus. by Sverre Holnsen.
