        The Complete Uncollected Short Stories

[N.p: N.p], [1974]. 2 volumes, octavo. Original cream wrappers, titles to front covers in purple. Wrappers of Vol. I sunned, wrappers of Vol. II a little marked; an excellent set, internally fresh. First collected edition of Salinger's short stories, which first appeared in magazines such as The Sunday Evening Post and Esquire, between 1940 and 1948. These are unauthorised editions of the work, which Salinger had not intended to republish. Salinger sued booksellers and the supposed printer ("John Greenberg"), gaining an injunction against further sales of the volumes. "'I wrote them a long time ago,' Mr. Salinger said of the stories, 'and I never had any intention of publishing them. I wanted them to die a perfectly natural death...'" (p. 44, If You Really Want to Hear about It: Writers on J. D. Salinger and his Work).

        Carrie

New York: Doubleday and Company, 1974 First edition, first printing with "P6" to page 199. Publisher's maroon cloth, lettered in gilt; in the original pictorial dust jacket designed by Alex Gotfryd, lettered in yellow, white and black. Book fine; unclipped dust jacket, with a hint of faint toning to the spine, tiny closed tear to the top edge of the front panel, light rubbing to rear panel, else a bright and clean copy of King's first novel, near fine overall. An epistolary novel, Carrie tells the story of Carrie White, a teenage misfit with telekinetic powers. After being broken down by her fanatically religious mother and humiliated by her classmates, Carrie decides to use her powers to get revenge on the people who hurt her. Although it was only his first novel, Carrie remains one of King's most popular stories. Indeed, as The New York Times confirms in its review, "King does more than tell a story" and lauds "That this is a first novel is amazing. King writes with the kind of surety normally associated only with veteran writers." Notably, Carrie was first adapted into a film by Brian De Palma in 1976 and was reimagined in 2013 by Kimberly Pierce.. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Tragedy and Hope - A History of the World in Our Time

Publisher Uncertain, 1974, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good, Reprint, Signed, Illustrated By: Harsh / Finegold (dust jacket); Morgan (endpaper map). Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall, Signed and inscribed by Carroll Quigley upon half-title page in black marker, dated 1974. 1348 pages. Index. No dust jacket. "Shows the years 1895-1950 as a period of transition from the world dominated by Europe in the nineteenth century to the world of three blocs in the twentieth century." - from dust jacket (not included). Most notable for its revelation of plans for a global government, based upon Quigley's access to secret archives. Author mentored Bill Clinton at Georgetown. Clean with light wear. Binding sound. Unmarked but for incidental 1/4" ball pen mark to page 105. Prior owner's bookplate inside front board. Although this copy satisfies many points of being a first printing, our research suggests it may be a bootleg reprint, circa 1974, therefore we offer it as such. Reprint or not, signed copies of this landmark work are exceedingly scarce.

Yes. It is splendidly put together and hypnotic to read. It is as clear and hard-edged as a cut diamond. Mr. Heller's concentration and patience are so evident on every page that one can only say that "Something Happened" is at all points precisely what he hoped it would be. [1987], asking about the original title of Catch-22, with an appended note from Heller: "Yep, it really began as Catch-18. J.H. And silly me! I signed George's book on the back page first. I think he'll be pleased. J.H." Postcard to Schaeffer, 9 May 1987, re his appreciation of Catch-22.         The 100 Greatest Books of All Time/Franklin Mint

The Franklin Library, Franklin Center, Pennsylvania - Stunning and complete set of one hundred full leather-bound collectorÕs editions of the worldÕs finest writers, from Henry Adams to Emile Zola. The rich bindings are ornately decorated in stamped gilt designs unique to each volume: classical statue figures adorn AristotleÕs ÒPoliticsÓ, the cover of BurtonÕs ÒTales of the Arabian NightsÓ is filled with brilliant medallions, and delicate morning glories climb the boards of ThoreauÕs ÒWaldenÓ. Most contain many fine art illustrations from artists such as Gustave Dore, N.C. Wyeth, Quentin Fiore, Allan Mardon, Herbert Tauss, and Jon Tenniel. CONDITION DETAILS (see our photos of actual books for sale): This set is in spectacular condition; 90% appear to never have been opened before, with the gilt edges and colorful moire endpapers in pristine condition, and the satin sewn-in bookmarks in original folded position. All bindings are tight and square, with no creases, no writing or signatures, and no bookplates throughout the set. Publication dates are 1974-1982. Although the complete set is in superb condition, weÕve taken the time to closely examine each volume and list the following very small flaws, which weÕve also tried to represent clearly in our five photos.Zoom in on our photos - at Mountain House Fine Books youÊsee the lovely books you're buying! Your purchase passes forward your love of literature - all proceeds are donated to literacy programs in our local community and around the globe.Ê Two volumes have slightly incomplete gilt paint coverage on top page edges: ÒPlaysÓ by Euripides & ÒTristram ShandyÓ by Laurence Sterne. ThereÕs subtle spotting on the gilt top page edge on ÒPoliticsÓ by Aristotle. Several volumes have a very mildly bumped corner, edge or spine hub: ÒThe Divine ComedyÓ by Dante Alighieri; ÒFive ComediesÓ by Aristophanes; ÒAlice's Adventures in WonderlandÓ by Lewis Carroll; ÒThe Great GatsbyÓ by F. Scott Fitzgerald; ÒThe FederalistÓ by Hamilton, Madison and Jay; ÒThe PrinceÓ by Niccolo Machiavelli; ÒMoby-DickÓ by Herman Melville; ÒSatyriconÓ by Petronius; ÒEight ComediesÓ by William Shakespeare; ÒVanity FairÓ by William Makepeace Thackeray; ÒPhilosophical WorksÓ by Rene Descartes; and ÒNanaÓ by Emile Zola. Very small nicks or scuffs are on a few volumes: ÒDon Quixote de La ManchaÓ by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra; ÒMoll FlandersÓ by Daniel Defoe; ÒRobinson CrusoeÓ by Daniel Defoe; ÒPlaysÓ by Henrik Ibsen; ÒNine TalesÓ by Henry James; ÒUlyssesÓ by James Joyce; ÒPoemsÓ by John Keats; ÒMoby-DickÓ by Herman Melville; ÒParadise LostÓ by John Milton; ÒSeven PlaysÓ by Moliere; ÒPolitical Writings of Thomas PaineÓ; ÒSwann's WayÓ by Marcel Proust; ÒGargantua and PantagruelÓ by Francois Rabelais; ÒVanity FairÓ by William Makepeace Thackeray, ÒFathers and SonsÓ by Ivan Turgenev, ÒHuckleberry FinnÓ by Mark Twain; ÒWaldenÕ by Henry D. Thoreau; and ÒSelected Poems of William Butler YeatsÓ. Quite subtle smudges/marks are visible on some leather covers: ÒFive ComediesÓ by Aristophanes ÒPride and PrejudiceÓ by Jane Austen; ÒGreat ExpectationsÓ by Charles Dickens; ÒThe Sound and the FuryÓ by William Faulkner; ÒThe Autobiography of Benjamin FranklinÓ; ÒSatyriconÓ by Petronius; ÒSwann's WayÓ by Marcel Proust; CandideÓ by Voltaire; and ÒNanaÓ by Emile Zola. ÒAlice's Adventures in WonderlandÓ by Lewis Carroll has a slightly musty odor but absolutely no damp staining or discoloration and has been interleaved with archival MicroChamber zeolite paper from Conservation Resources. The title/copyright page of ÒThe History of the Peloponnesian WarÓ by Thucydides has a half-inch mark that appears to be an error from the printing process. ÒCandideÓ by Voltaire has a dusty ribbon end. A mild scratch appears on the covers of ÒTristram ShandyÓ by Laurence Sterne & ÒThe Pilgrims ProgressÓ by John Bunyan. These small imperfections are detailed to give you the fullest understanding of the setÕs condition Ð overall this set is a gorgeous and truly stunning collection. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

NU FÉMININ. Aquarelle originale, technique mixte

Limited edition of 1,750 numbered copies.Maria Sibylla Merian, also known as Anna Maria Sibylla (1647 - 1717) was German-born naturalist, artist and explorer. At a time when it was not customary for women to pursue careers in the sciences, she became a pioneering entomologist. Her work changed the field of entomology forever, for she was one of the first naturalists who cultivated live insects, which gave her powerful insights into their natural history and behaviours. Contrary to the prevailing notion of the time that insects were spontaneously created, Merian discovered that many insects went through distinct developmental transformations. Through her accurate and realist illustrations of insects and their food plants, she was the first to document these life stages for the public. Merian is now recognised as one of the best insect (and flower) scientific illustrators of her day – and indeed, of all time. The year of Merian’s death, her paintings were purchased for Peter I, tsar of Russia. Her daughter, Dorothea Maria subsequently was summoned to St. Petersburg, where she worked as a scientific illustrator for the tsar and became the first woman to be employed by the Russian Academy of Sciences.         THE FOREVER WAR

St. Martin's Press [1974], New York - Octavo, boards. "Tough, slick narrative of an interstellar which lasts [over] 1000 years. To the soldier hero, it seems to last about ten years, thanks to the time-dilation effect of faster-than-light travel. Good, realistic, military SF which actually subverts many of the clichés of that category . (he was a Vietnam veteran, which helped). Initially rejected by 18 publishers, it has since sold over a million copies." - Pringle, The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction, second edition (1995), pp. 141-2. Haldeman's first SF novel. Winner of the 1975 Hugo award for best novel. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-479. Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, p. 360. Survey of Science Fiction Literature II, pp. 813-8. A fine copy in a nearly fine first issue dust jacket (priced $7.95) with a touch of rubbing to the front flap fold and upper right front corner and mild rubbing to spine ends. Amsterdam, Jacob Meurs, 1663. Folio. With engraved title-page, coat of arms and 72 double-page engravinged plates. Contemporary motted calf, gold-tooled spine, rebacked with original backstrip laid down.

Alden & Landis 663/47; I.H. van Eeghen, "Illustraties v. d. 17de Eeuwse Beschrijvingen ...," in: Jaarboek Amstelodamum LXVI (1974), pp. 96-116, at pp. 100-101 & 104; Nijhoff & V. Hattum 75. First and only edition of an important and magnificently illustrated history and description of Amsterdam, written by the celebrated Dutch historian Olfert Dapper (1635/6-1689). The plates include maps of the city showing its growth from 1400 to the expansion that was still in progress at the time of publication, a city view, and views of nearly all important buildings in and around the city. The text covers politics, religious strife, trade in America and the East Indies, and is largely built around the buildings depicted. The frontispiece emphasizes the city's international nature by including figures representing the Americas, Africa and the Middle East. It was the first great account of Amsterdam since Pontanus's (Latin 1611, Dutch 1614). When Pontanus wrote, near the beginning of the Twelve-Year Truce with Spain, Amsterdam was just emerging as the Netherlands' leading city, whereas Dapper shows the city at the height of its glory.Binding rubbed along the extremities, and rebacked, as noted above. Some marginal waterstains, some marginal annotations in ink, plate with "Amsterdam van het Y aan te sien" reinforced with tape, and some minor spots. Nonetheless a good copy.

The Collected Works of Sir Winston S Churchill 34 volume set

London: Library of Imperial History, 1974. First edition, only printing. Hardcover. This is a 34-volume set of Churchill's Collected Works.  The Collected Works was a lavish production timed to commemorate the centenary of Churchill's birth.  Most sets were bound in natural calfskin vellum with 22 ct. gold titling, the Churchill Arms in gilt on the front cover, gilt page edges, green marbled endpapers, green and gold head and foot bands, and satin ribbon markers.  The contents were printed on special 500-year archival paper. Some understandably quibble about the editions used and revisions made for the Collected Works.  Few contest that the set testifies with beautiful authority to Churchill the writer.  The 34 volumes of the Collected Works are virtually a library unto themselves.  The set consumes nearly five feet of shelf space and weighs almost 100 pounds, comprising five million words printed on 19,000 pages.  The Collected Works publisher intended to produce 3000 sets.  However, the print run never exceeded 2000 copies and only 1750 sets were ever published.  Here is a full, but imperfect, set, structurally sound with aesthetic flaws for a collector/reader who wants a Collected Works set at a fraction of the usual market price. This set came to us from a storage facility packed with books, where they apparently spent quite a number of years. The contents of all 34 volumes appear bright and tight, with no spotting. The gilt page edges remain generally bright with little scuffing or wear. All of the green satin ribbon markers are intact. The sole previous ownership mark is the circular embossed personal library device of the previous owner on the half-titles. All of the bindings are square and intact, showing little wear. The calfskin vellum was meant to tone and mellow with age. Here the vellum bindings have toned significantly and unevenly through the set. As it aged, the vellum bindings also had a tendency to separate from the boards beneath. A number of the volumes in this set now experience some separation of the vellum from the boards, which is not so much visually evident as it is evident to the touch when the books are handled. Finally, the original green leather slipcases are no longer present. Withal, a sound, full set. Please be advised that this large, heavy set will be packed with care and shipped at cost, depending on the buyer's destination and shipping preference.         Pilgrim at Tinker Creek

New York, New York, USA: Harper & Row, 1974. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good+/Very Good+. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Book Club Edition. From Annie Dillard's personal library and with her bookplate on a front endpaper. Minor bumping to spine extremities. Light surface wear. Five pages of pencil annotations. This was evidently Dillard's own copy used in giving presentations as it contains the two paged single-sided yellow foolscap text handwritten by Dillard beginning: "I'm going to read from PATC. I'll read something from the beginning..." Contains two paper page markers. Additionally, a handmade decorative jacket made from brown paper with the book's title and author's name covers the actual dust jacket of this book. Since this copy was from Dillard's own library and the text is annotated by her, one may surmise that she created this protective cover herself. A unique copy of the renowned American poet, novelist, essayist and critic's Pulitzer Prize winning book.

Odds and Sods (Original poster for the 1974 album)

London and New York: Track / MCA, 1974. Original promotional poster for the 1974 album. In the autumn of 1973, while members of The Who were preparing for the film version of "Tommy," John Entwistle was put in charge of compiling an album to counter the widespread bootlegging of the band's concerts. "I tried to arrange it like a parallel sort of Who career--what single and album tracks we might have released, " Entwistle explained. Two albums' worth of material was compiled, but in 1974 only a single album was released. The second "album's worth" came out on the 1998 remastered CD release. The original album's popular highlight is "Long Live Rock," a staple at the band's live shows. 30 x 20 inches. Rolled, on archival linen. Fine.
