        Pilgrim at Tinker Creek

New York, New York, USA: Harper & Row, 1974. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good+/Very Good+. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Book Club Edition. From Annie Dillard's personal library and with her bookplate on a front endpaper. Minor bumping to spine extremities. Light surface wear. Five pages of pencil annotations. This was evidently Dillard's own copy used in giving presentations as it contains the two paged single-sided yellow foolscap text handwritten by Dillard beginning: "I'm going to read from PATC. I'll read something from the beginning..." Contains two paper page markers. Additionally, a handmade decorative jacket made from brown paper with the book's title and author's name covers the actual dust jacket of this book. Since this copy was from Dillard's own library and the text is annotated by her, one may surmise that she created this protective cover herself. A unique copy of the renowned American poet, novelist, essayist and critic's Pulitzer Prize winning book.

Odds and Sods (Original poster for the 1974 album)

London and New York: Track / MCA, 1974. Original promotional poster for the 1974 album. In the autumn of 1973, while members of The Who were preparing for the film version of "Tommy," John Entwistle was put in charge of compiling an album to counter the widespread bootlegging of the band's concerts. "I tried to arrange it like a parallel sort of Who career--what single and album tracks we might have released, " Entwistle explained. Two albums' worth of material was compiled, but in 1974 only a single album was released. The second "album's worth" came out on the 1998 remastered CD release. The original album's popular highlight is "Long Live Rock," a staple at the band's live shows. 30 x 20 inches. Rolled, on archival linen. Fine.

THIRD SCRIPT (1960) Bound in Universal-International Pictures paper covers, dated "May 2, 1960". Cover states "FIRST DRAFT SCREENPLAY" (first Universal draft). Title page states "Revised First Draft Screenplay". Aeneas MacKenzie is handwritten on the title page and again at the top of page 16. At the top of the first page of the script, however, is written "go to Steve". That would most likely be STEVE GRIMES. The first 18 pages of the script are heavily revised by hand, likely by Grimes. There are a few other hand revisions here and there. 157 pages. FOURTH SCRIPT (1961) Bound in printed Universal-International Pictures paper covers. "REVISED FIRST DRAFT SCREENPLAY" dated April 27, 1961. Un-credited, but "Steve" is written on the first page, so likely by Steve Grimes. 158 pages, but the last few pages have the page numbers crossed out and renumbered by hand so that the last page now reads 123. There are some hand revisions throughout, heavy on a few pages. FIFTH SCRIPT (1964) A partial "Revised First Draft" dated March 9, 1964, by Anthony Veiller. The title page states SEVEN ARTS ASSOCIATED CORP. Consists of only the first 64 pages. It is likely that Veiller only revised this portion to see what Seven Arts would think of his revisions before proceeding (a common practice in Hollywood), or it is simply incomplete. The pages are photocopied and laid in loosely in a plain black paper folder. There are some revisions here and there, some photocopied, some in blue ink and unique to this copy. SIXTH SCRIPT (1973) By JOHN HUSTON and GLADYS HILL. Dated 10/18/73 at the top of the first page. The pages are either original typed pages or original carbons. The type imprint is tangible on the backside of each page. There are 125 pages. There are a few revisions here and there, some in black and blue pen. Bound in black paper covers, typed title label. SEVENTH SCRIPT (1974) Bound in printed "John Huston-John Foreman Production" paper covers, by "John Huston and Gladys Hill". Undated, likely an early 1974 draft. Photocopied inner pages, 129 pages, no annotations. EIGHTH SCRIPT (1974) Bound in printed "John Huston-John Foreman Production" paper covers. "Second Version / July 5, 1974", by John Huston and Gladys Hill. 129 pages, including some yellow revision pages. Condition: The scripts are all in generally GOOD to VERY GOOD condition. The covers tend to have some wear, including creases and small closed tears, especially to the portion that overhangs the inner pages. The inner pages are all bright and clear. The second script has a tear and tiny paper loss in the bottom left of the front cover, with a few stains on the front and back covers, and slight staining in the top left corner of some pages (but only in the border). The fourth script has a small stain in the top left of the cover. A wonderful, well maintained set of eight important drafts that show the 20+ year development of THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING. Good

        Eberhard Schlotter. »Orpheus«, 1974.

Eraserhead (Two original press photographs from the set of the 1977 film)

Los Angeles, CA: American Film Institute [AFI], 1974. Two vintage single weight press photographs from the set of the 1977 film. Lynch's film was shot piecemeal on an AFI backlot in Los Angeles over a period of five years, and two years into the project, cinematographer Herbert Cardwell died in his sleep at the age of 35. He was replaced after four weeks of searching by Frederick Elmes, who is shown in one of these images beside Lynch and Nance. Thus, we place the date of press photographs to late 1973 or early 1974. David Lynch's first feature film. The AFI provided the director with use of their lot (where he also lived during much of filming) at no charge, but he had difficulty getting financial assistance from them on the basis of his 20-page script and decidedly unorthodox methods. Terence Malick screened the film at one point for a financial backer, who walked out, calling the movie "bullshit." A bad call, as the film's wild success on the midnight movie circuit--and subsequent success as a legitimate art film--gained the vocal admiration of everyone from Charles Bukowski to Stanley Kubrick. Cinematographer Elmes had come up as an assistant cameraman on John Cassavetes' "A Women Under the Influence" (1974) and "The Killing of a Cinese Bookie" (1976), and went on to shoot Cassavetes' "Opening Night" (1977), Lynch's "Blue Velvet" (1986) and "Wild at Heart" (1990), Jim Jarmuch's "Night on Earth" (1991) and "Broken Flowers" (2005), Ang Lee's "The Ice Storm" (1997) and "Ride with the Devil" (1999), and Todd Solondz's "Storytelling" (2001). Both photos 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm), each with press notations at the margins as shown. Brief notations on the verso. Fine. Criterion Collection 725.

L'opera in esame si distingue dalla classica produzione calcografica di Dalì in quanto il tratto preciso e netto conferisce all'immagine un'eleganza ed armonia fuori dal comune.         The Civil War: A Narrative

Random House, New York 1974 - Three volumes. First editions of all three volumes. Volume One is fine in near fine dustwrapper with faint offsetting at the bottom of the jacket; Volume Two has an unobtrusive gift inscription else fine in near fine, slightly age-toned dustwrapper; Volume Three is fine in fine dustwrapper. Because the three volumes were published over a period of almost two decades the set has become increasingly difficult to find in both first editions and in reasonably uniform condition.         Tell Me A Riddle

(New York): Delta, 1974. Paperback reprint of Tillie Olsen's great collection, first published in 1961, inscribed by Olsen to fellow writer Annie Dillard. Each of the four stories -- "I Stand Here Ironing" (1956), "Hey Sailor, What Ship?" (1957), "O Yes" (1957), and "Tell Me A Riddle" (1960) -- were featured in Best American Short Stories, and "Tell Me A Riddle" won the O. Henry Prize for 1961. Although the book fell out of print, it became a touchstone for a generation of American writers inspired by Olsen's attention to the interior lives of working people, especially women: "never a direct protest, never rebellion. I think of our others in their three-, four-year-oldness -- the explosions, the tempers, the denunciations, the demands -- and I feel suddenly ill. I put the iron down. What in me demanded that goodness in her? And what was the cost, the cost to her of such goodness?" This copy is warmly inscribed in Olsen's characteristic microscript: "For Annie Dillard -- / In kinship -- and in love for your work. / Tillie Olsen / June, 1974." That year, Dillard published her first two books: the poetry collection Tickets for a Prayer Wheel, and the personal narrative Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, which won the Pulitzer Prize. A wonderful association copy, linking two original and influential American writers. Octavo, original blue paper wrappers. Address label of Tillie Olsen affixed to verso of front wrapper. Presentation inscription from Tillie Olsen to Annie Dillard on verso of front wrapper, ownership inscription of Annie Dillard ("Annie Dillard / please return") on half-title. Wrappers creased, light edgewear, bottom half-inch of spine missing. Housed in a custom slipcase.
