        Portrait of Auden

Randolph-Macon College: Dr. John Temple, 1974. Original. Framed in plastic. Very Good . Dr. John Temple Witt. Association Copy of a Portrait of W.H. Auden once cherished by Dr. William Gray, Chairman of the department of English at Randolph-Macon College, executed in pen-and-ink (approximately 12" by 10") by Dr. John Temple Witt, the former Head of the Art Department at the college located in Ashland, Virginia. This contemporary portrait of the distinguished visiting poet is named, numbered, signed, and dated by Witt: "Auden 5/10 JT. Witt '74." Association Copy once owned by Dr. William Gray, a close friend of W. H. Auden and dedicatee of one of his poems. It is likely that the Wystan Auden encountered the artist, Dr. John Temple Witt, Head of the Art Department at Randolph Macon College, Ashville, Virginia, when the poet stayed there during one of his readings in the early 1970s. A newspaper clipping from that time indicates that the poet looked particularly agèd, worn, wrinkled, unshaven, and dissheveled: impressions vividly conveyed with accuracy and sympathy in this rare study. The poet loved visiting the college and stayed with his longtime close friend, Dr. William Gray, Chair of the English department. This portrait is an Association Copy once cherished by Dr. Gray, who had become lifelong friends with Auden beginning from the time of his undergraduate days at Harvard. Auden dedicated "The Aliens" to Dr. Gray, to whom he signed personal letters with "Love" and "All My Love." In an address he gave during the early Seventies, Gray said of his dear and much admired friend, "For the past twenty-five years, Mr. Auden has enjoyed the reputation of being the most important and original poet of the post Eliot generation in English letters. He is also a very fine literary critic, actually generally considered to be the finest living critic of literature, and he has even turned his talent to the theatre...Mr. Auden is distinctly a poet in the grand manner...the most distinguished poet of the Twentieth century, the world's greatest living writer, Mr. W. H. Auden." The finely executed pen-and-ink over engraved portrait is framed in evocative thick, hard--but scratched and slightly age-toned--plastic that complements Auden's wrinkled and tobacco-stained face. The scratches seem to have accrued during the storage of Dr. Gray's personal property after his death, but they complement the subject. A wire hanger and screws were originally attached to the plastic back for suspension but they have been removed and stored for reattachment, as desired.

The Story of Cupid and Psyche, with illustrations designed by Edward Burne-Jones, mostly engraved on the wood by William Morris; the Introduction by A.R. Dufty.

Folio. 2 vols.; original cloth-backed patterned boards, leather spine labels, top edges gilt; 44 wood-engravings after designs by Edward Burne-Jones, mostly engraved by William Morris, and with 26 plates in the Introduction volume showing preliminary sketches for the engravings; a fine copy in the matching slipcase. Printed by Will and Sebastian Carter at the Rampant Lions Press. This is No. 206 of 270 numbered copies.. Volume I contains the Introduction by A.R. Dufty and the plates of preliminary sketches, Volume II contains the poem and the engravings. [Sold with] One of 100 portfolios containing a set of proofs of the 44 wood-engravings, this no. xciv. (Portfolio a little sunned) The limitation of this publication is slightly confusing. 130 copies numbered I - CXXX were issued with a portfolio containing a set of collotype prints of the 47 original drawings and a set of proofs of the 44 wood-engravings. There were then 270 copies numbered 1 to 270 of the two volumes. Additionally there were 100 portfolios numbered i to c each containg a set of the proofs of the 44 wood-engravings. We are offering here a combination of one of the 270 numbered two volume sets and a copy of the 100 portfolios of proofs. "Cupid and Psyche" is one of the twenty-four stories that make up William Morris's The Earthly Paradise, a poem in Chaucerian metres. Morris and Burne-Jones had planned to produce a great illustrated edition of the work which, though begun, was never completed, and an unillustrated commercial edition was published in 1868-70. The wood-block illustrations for "Cupid and Psyche," designed by Burne-Jones and mostly engraved by Morris, have survived and are here published for the first time in their context. For this edition the matrices of the Kelmscott Troy types were made available for casting and this becomes the first book printed in the type since 1898. Several of the original drawings were used as sources for new blocks, cut to illustrate Robert Bridges' poem "Eros & Psyche", published by the Gregynog Press in 1935.

THE ATROCITY EXHIBITION (Fine Signed Copy)

Jonathan Cape, UK 1974 - Fine, sharp copy of mesmerising Ballard tapas selection, tasty, spicy and as satisfying as a mixed metaphor utilizing the music of Pink Floyd and class A drugs. The boards are black, clean and sharp, even though there this is the suspicion of the front board's upper corner having had a most gentle encounter with gravity. The spine is tight, rock solid and and aware of the prestige of being associated with the book's wonderfully clean, wholesome pages, and then there's the superbly white, neat and clean dustjacket. The dw is clipped, but bears the official Jonathan Cape price sticker of £2.95. The book is SIGNED BY J G BALLARD ON THE TITLE PAGE. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Austin: UT Humanities Research Center, 1974. 240pp. Large octavo. Camel cloth, lettered in black. Small spot on fore-edge, otherwise near fine in chipped glassine. Accompanied by related items detailed below. First and only edition. One of 1200 copies designed by William Holman. This was one of John Payne's copies, and bears his tasteful (Reynolds Stone?) bookplate and is signed by him on the title page. It is accompanied by a set of sewn f&gs of the book, signed and dated (9 August 1974) by John on the first page and it also bears his bookplate. Also present is a set of blue-line page proofs for the book, bearing the ink name of then UT editor, jazz critic/historian and noted Texas poet, Dave Oliphant, on the half-title, above the proof approval stamp. Accompanied further by JOHN STEINBECK A COLLECTION OF BOOKS & MANUSCRIPTS, Brad Morrow's 1980 catalogue 8 offering the Harry Valentine Collection, with a Foreword by John Payne (1/250 in gilt cloth), very good in dust jacket, with John Payne's bookplate, signed by him on the title, and with a few scattered annotations (chiefly checks or circled item numbers); also present is another copy (1/2500 in wrappers), also with John's bookplate, signed by him, with a signed photocopy of the typescript of his Forward laid in. Accompanied, finally, by set #4 of ten sets of long galleys of the catalogue (without John's Foreword), folded, tanned and a bit frayed at a few margins. Together a fine association lot of copies of, and material relating to, two of the essential bibliographic references to the Steinbeck canon.
