The Karla Trilogy] Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy, The Honourable Schoolboy, Smiley’s People.

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1974-1979.. First editions of each title in the author's acclaimed Karla Trilogy. Octavo, original black cloth. 3 volumes. Each are signed by Le Carre on the title page. Tinker, Tailor Soldier Spy is signed "David Cornwell aka John LeCarre." Each are near fine to fine in near fine dust jackets, with The Honourable Schoolboy price-clipped. An excellent set, uncommon in this condition and signed. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy garnered instant praise for Le Carre as "[t]he premier spy novelist of his time. Perhaps of all time" (Time). "Le Carre is simply the world's greatest fictional spymaster" (Newsweek). Le Carre?s inspiration drew from his experience of the revealing of the Cambridge Five traitors in the 1950s and ?60s (Anthony, 2009), and the novel?s popularity can be seen in relation to those shocking events. In 2011, the novel was adapted into a successful film, starring Gary Oldman and Colin Firth, and it received three nominations at the 84th Academy Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Actor. This successful production is but one of Le Carre?s numerous accolades in espionage fiction. He was awarded both the Helmerich Award and the Goethe Medal, and, in 2008, The Times ranked Le Carré 22nd on its list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945."

Amsterdam, Jacob Meurs, 1663. Folio. With engraved title-page, coat of arms and 72 double-page engravinged plates. Contemporary motted calf, gold-tooled spine, rebacked with original backstrip laid down.

      - Alden & Landis 663/47; I.H. van Eeghen, "Illustraties v. d. 17de Eeuwse Beschrijvingen .," in: Jaarboek Amstelodamum LXVI (1974), pp. 96-116, at pp. 100-101 & 104; Nijhoff & V. Hattum 75. First and only edition of an important and magnificently illustrated history and description of Amsterdam, written by the celebrated Dutch historian Olfert Dapper (1635/6-1689). The plates include maps of the city showing its growth from 1400 to the expansion that was still in progress at the time of publication, a city view, and views of nearly all important buildings in and around the city. The text covers politics, religious strife, trade in America and the East Indies, and is largely built around the buildings depicted. The frontispiece emphasizes the city's international nature by including figures representing the Americas, Africa and the Middle East. It was the first great account of Amsterdam since Pontanus's (Latin 1611, Dutch 1614). When Pontanus wrote, near the beginning of the Twelve-Year Truce with Spain, Amsterdam was just emerging as the Netherlands' leading city, whereas Dapper shows the city at the height of its glory.Binding rubbed along the extremities, and rebacked, as noted above. Some marginal waterstains, some marginal annotations in ink, plate with "Amsterdam van het Y aan te sien" reinforced with tape, and some minor spots. Nonetheless a good copy.

        EVE'S HOLLYWOOD: A Confessional L.A. Novel

New York: Delacorte Press, 1974. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 296 p. Textual photographs and illustrations. New York: Delacorte Press/Seymour Lawrence, 1974. First edition. "Journalist, party girl, bookworm, artist, muse: by the time she'd hit thirty, Eve Babitz had played all of these roles. Immortalized as the nude beauty facing down Duchamp and as one of Ed Ruscha's Five 1965 Girlfriends, Babitz's first book showed her to be a razor-sharp writer with tales of her own. Eve's Hollywood is an album of vivid snapshots of Southern California's haute bohemians, of outrageously beautiful high-school ingenues and enviably tattooed Chicanas, of rock stars sleeping it off at the Chateau Marmont" (New York Review Books). Octavo. Original black cloth binding, with pink and silver stamping. This copy is inscribed by Mae Babitz, the author's mother, to Helen Wurdemann, longtime director of the Los Angeles Art Association, on the front flyleaf. Light bump to the top of the front board. Some general shelfwear to the dust jacket, with a bit of chipping at the corners and tips; else very good. Scarce.

1974. 8vo. 130 pp., 1 bl. f. Publisher's original printed wrapper. The "Austrian Embassy Reports on Arab Countries": a catalogue of and guide to all relevant documents in the Vienna State Archives formerly kept at the Imperial Internuncio and later the Embassy in Constantinople from 1750 to 1918. The documents relative to Arabia include numerous pieces on the Sherif of Mecca, the Wahhabites, the Pacha of Jeddah, Sheikh Faisal's threat to Hajj pilgrims, and British interests in the region; others relate to the Wahhabite movement in Syria, the English blockade of Mocha and various insurgencies in Yemen, as well as events in Arabic countries from Iraq and Kuweit to Algier and Morocco. "Old Austria, beyond suspicion of imperialistic designs or ambitions of colonialism, was vitally interested in preserving the Ottoman Empire and protecting both its own chartered rights and the rights of man in this enormous territory, as well as in advancing the local economic development, a process, indeed, in which the Habsburg Empire itself played an important part. The diplomatic reports reflect this situation. Striving as they did to represent the facts without any political bias, strictly according to facts, they are of especial interest to the historian. They comprise a vast area stretching from the Arabian Gulf to Morocco on the Atlantic" (introduction). - Insignificant bumping to extremeties; altogether very well preserved copy of this indispensable and rare volume of reference.

        Oreo

Greyfalcon House - Greyfalcon House, 1974. First edition, first printing. SIGNED and inscribed by the author on the first free end page: "To Whoopi Goldberg - Damn! Oreo come to life! Best, Fran Ross" Ross used liquid paper to correct the spelling at the end of the name Whoopi and went over several letters in ballpoint pen to make them clearly legible. Whoopi Golberg (born Caryn Johnson) had begun using her stage name in the mid-70s, around the same time as the publication of Ross's only book and, like the book's protagonist and its author, was raised by a single black mother, having been abadoned by her father, and had Jewish ancestry. Goldberg was a struggling comedian in California in the 70s and an avowed fan of Richard Pryor, for whom Ross was a writer. A scarce signature and an extraordinary association copy between one of the most successful comic actresses of the past forty years and an until-recently obscure, largely forgotten writer, whose sole novel has recently been widely celebrated as "criminally overlooked" (Kirkus Reviews). The book is sharp, clean, and bright. A Near Fine copy, showing only a few spots of stain on the page edges. The dust jacket shows a two-inch tear on the rear panel with some associated creases and short, closed tears on the front and rear panels. Faint tan to the dust jacket spine and some spots of rubbing, most noticable at the top of the front panel and in the letter "R" of the spine. Dust jacket retains its $6.95 price. Now protected in a mylar cover. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
