Viking Press, NY 1974 - Inscribed by François Truffaut to Tay Garnett: "Pour Tay Garnett/ avec mon admiration/ et mon plus cordial/ souvenir,/ Francois Truffaut" Tay Garnett (1894-1977) was one of the great American film directors of Hollywood's Golden Age, best known for the MGM film noir masterpiece, The Postman Always Rings Twice. This is a presentation copy to him from another great film director, who was one of the subjects in his book DIRECTING: LEARN FROM THE MASTERS, published posthumously in 1996. Truffaut was film director, screenwriter, actor, producer and film critic who, along with Jean-Luc Goddard, Éric Rohmer, Claude Chabrol, Agnès Varda, Jacques Demy and Jacques Rivette, was responsible for creating the French New Wave. He is probably best known for his Antoine Doinel series, beginning with "Les Quatre Cents Coups" ("400 Blows). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

NY: Knopf. 1974. The Nobel Laureate's second novel, which uses the theme of the friendship between two African-American women to explore issues of race, conformity and expectations within the black community, and within the larger white society. Inscribed by Morrison in 1978 to author, historian, and English professor Saunders Redding and his wife: "To the Reddings from Toni Morrison. Warmest regards and my very best wishes." With Saunders' signature on the title page. Saunders Redding was a pioneering critic of African-American literature and is believed to have been the first African-American to teach at an Ivy League university, when he was a visiting professor at his alma mater, Brown University, in 1949. He wrote a number of books focusing on African-American literature and history, and in the 1970s he was a member of the influential Haverford Group -- an informal think tank of accomplished African-American men who met to strategize about ways to defeat segregation and racism. An extraordinary association copy between the Nobel Prize winner Morrison and one of her most accomplished African-American literary forebears. Fine in a fine dust jacket but for two tiny edge tears on the back panel. In custom clamshell case. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine.

Christian Boltanski: Inventaire des Objets Ayant Appartenu a une Femme de Bois-Colombes

Centre Nationale d'Art Contemporain, Paris (CNAC), Paris 1974 - First edition, first printing. Soft cover. Printed stiff wrappers; no dust jacket as issued. Photographs and text (in French) by Christian Boltanski. 48 pp., with 307 total illustrations. 8-1/4 x 5-1/2 inches. [Cited in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2006).] Published on the occasion of the 1974 exhibition at the Centre Nationale d'Art Contemporain, Paris. Out of print. Very scarce. Fine. A Mint copy. Christian Boltanski changed everything for a period of time in the 1970s and 1980s. That he continues to contribute meaningfully to the dialogue surrounding accumulation, archives, and loss is somewhat remarkable. His assembled collections, not quite typologies, demonstrate a humility and sensitivity to the suffering of, for instance, Jewish people devastated by the holocaust. He created shrines of remembrance, tacit souvenirs, where in their wake were only numbing statistics. Although Boltanski never really addresses the issue of anti-Semitism directly -- it is always oblique and general in interviews -- his work assumes a collective responsibility for some of history's greatest atrocities.         Pulsars. Illustrated with a Silkscreen Print by Sam Gilliam

Mt. Horeb, WI: The Perishable Press Ltd, 1974. Unique binding by Coleen Curry, full purple goat suede with onlays and paint, on one of 150 copies, all on Nideggen & Frankfurt Cream for the text, numbered with the ear-tatoo device employed by, printer / designer, Walter Hamady. Page size: 11-1/4 x 6-1/4 inches; 28pp; 16 of which are printed. Bound by Coleen Curry: full purple goat suede with paper collage, acrylic paint and Italian silk sewing, blind tooling on cover with binder's custom tool; cover attached to book with secondary sewing consisting of ten-18K gold wire staples secured by handmade wood and parchment tackets. Original book pamphlet stitched with red and blue Moriki paper and with embossed green goat sued flyleaves. Book is affixed on red wood stub to allow for completely flat opening of silkscreen print by Sam Gilliam. Original paper wrappers in brown bound in along with the prospectus; housed in a custom-made clamshell box. This handsome publication from Walter Hamady's Perishable Press is set in Palatino and printed in red, black, navy blue & yellow; the titlepage display is Open Kapitalen and Augustea filetta. Sam Gilliam's vibrant silkscreen centerfold captures the energy of a pulsar - as does Ms. Curry's lovely binding. She writes that her goal was to compliment the silkscreen as well as reflect some of Lewis' references to astrophysics. The Perishable Press prospectus calls this book a "tactile event" and it appears to be even more so with this manipulated and distressed suede binding. PP#65.

      - McPHAIL,DAVID. PIG PIG RIDES. Offered here are 6 FABULOUS WATERCOLORS used for McPhail's wonderful picture book published by Dutton that features an adorable character named Pig Pig. Two pieces are large measuring 20" wide x 15" high. The other four are 11 x 11", 10 x 11", 9 x 11" and 5 x 11". All depict a glorious humanized Pig Pig. McPhail was born in Newburyport, Mass. He has illustrated the work of others, notably Nancy Willard's Sailing To Cythera which was one of AIGA's 50 Books of the Year in 1974, and he has authored and illustrated a profusion of books on his own. His Captain Toad and the Motorbike was likewise included in AIGA's 1979 show of 50 Best Books. McPhail belongs to the new breed of children's book illustrators, along with James Marshall, Trina Schart Hyman and others - who bring a fresh originality to children's literature. McPhail's style ranges broadly from intricate detail reminiscent of Sendak's and E.H. Shepard's line illustrations to the broad strokes of William Steig. See Hornbook Illustrators of Children's Books vol. 4 p. 4-5, 143.

New York, Bobbs-Merrill 1974 - First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Gregory McDonald on the title page and Chevy Chase, who played Irwin M. Fletcher in the movie Fletch. Some spotting to the page edges, in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing. The novel introduces I. M. Fletcher, a journalist and ex-marine staying on a beach watching the drug culture for a story, waiting to find the dealer's source before publishing an expos? It went on to win the 1975 Edgar Allan Poe Award, for Best First Novel, from the Mystery Writers of America. It is the basis for the 1985 film bearing the same name, starring Chevy Chase. Fletch fared well from critics and performed well at the box office. It has since developed a cult following and was followed by a 1989 sequel, Fletch Lives. A prequel, Fletch Won, has been in development for over two decades. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
