[Attributes: Signed Copy]

He was a pupil of the Open Air School of Painting -the teaching project promoted by the painter Alfredo Ramos Mart?nez -inspired by "Plein air". Kitagawa assimilated and adopted the pictorial methods of the schools of Tlalpan and Taxco, the last of which he founded and directed until he returned to his homeland in 1936. In Japan, he introduced the Mexican style of depicting landscape and people, at the same time enriching it with local traditions such as the Ukiyoe. This brought him prestige and recognition as a Japanese painter. In the fifties he returned to Mexico briefly and came under new influences, mainly from the artist Rufino Tamayo whose work he admired, studied and incorporated into his unique Mexican-Japanese style.; 60 pages; Signed by Author & Illustrator .

Emperor of Midnight.

San Francisco: Black Sparrow Press, 1974 - Octavo. Original illustrated wrappers. Extremities a little rubbed, but a very good copy. First edition, first printing, wrappers issue, inscribed by the author to Winston Leyland, "For Winston Leyland, in a good cause as ever, Edouard Roditi", on the first blank, and with Leyland's ownership inscription inside front wrapper. This copy also has seven unpublished autograph letters signed from Roditi to Leyland, dated 1976-77, and an unpublished typewritten hand-corrected poem signed, titled "In Praise of Democracy". Leyland (b.1940) was a leading figure in American LGBT publishing who won the Stonewall Book Award in 1980. He established the Gay Sunshine Press in 1975, and his Gay Sunshine Journal (1970-82) was particularly influential for its interviews with prominent gay writers of the era, including Roditi himself, published in the Summer-Fall issue 1976. The letters centre around the preparation and response to the interview, but also discuss other gay matters. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
