Der Zee-vaert lof, handelende van de gedenck-waerdigste zee-vaerden met de daeraenklevende op en onder-ganghen der voornaemste heerschappijen der gantscher wereld: zedert haere beginselen tot op den dagh van huyden. In VI boecken beschreven. Amsterdam, Jacob Pietersz. Wachter (colophon: printed by Jan Fredericksz. Stam) , 1634. Folio. With letterpress half-title, a splendid engraved allegorical title-page with Neptune and numerous other figures, and 18 large engraved and etched illustrations in text (11.5 x 16.5 cm), including an original etching by Rembrandt: an allegorical scene of the "Ship of Fortune", with a nude figure of Fortune standing in a small sail boat, made for the book, signed "Rembrandt f. 1633". The other illustrations are by Willem Basse. Contemporary sheepskin parchment.

Borba de Moraes, pp. 398-399; Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish) I, Basse 49-65; Sabin 31476; not in Cat. NHSM; for the Rembrandt illustration: Bartsch 111; H. de la Fontaine Verwey, Uit de Wereld van het Boek, II, pp.130-131 (also in English in Quaerendo, 3 (1973), pp. 5-6); New Hollstein, Rembrandt 123.II. First and only edition of Herckmans's Der zee-vaert lof (In praise of sea voyages), in Dutch, with one of the very few book illustrations by the great painter and etcher Rembrandt van Rijn (1606/07-1669), here in one of the "early impressions" noted by New Hollstein. The book itself is also of interest, with a long verse poem in six books in honour of voyages from Noah's time to 1632 in chronological order, with extensive marginal annotations, including voyages by Columbus and the other great explorers venturing east, west and to the arctic. It forms a complete maritime history. It is followed by a short (9-page) poem in honour of ship travel on the Dutch rivers, then a 1-page poem in honour of Cornelis Jansz de Haen in 1633. The preliminaries contain additional short poems and a 6-page note to the reader by the author, as well as laudatory verses by Barlaeus, Boxhoorn, Revius, Scriverius and others. Basse's illustrations also deserve praise, though overshadowed by Rembrandt. Sabin quotes Stevens noting all "eighteen exquisite etchings". But the work is primarily and justly famous for containing one of the six etchings Rembrandt made especially as and appearing as book illustrations (in 3 books). With the late 19th-century bookplate of A.C. Burnell. Slightly foxed (including the Rembrandt illustration) and with some water stains (not affecting the Rembrandt illustration). Binding rubbed and dirty, and with cracks in the hinges. Good copy of a very desirable book on maritime history, with an original Rembrandt etching among the illustrations.

Irwin, in full James Benson Irwin (born March 17, 1930, Pittsburgh, Pa., U.S.¿died Aug. 8, 1991, Glenwood Springs, Colo.), American astronaut, pilot of the Lunar Module on the Apollo 15 mission (July 26¿Aug. 7, 1971), in which he and the mission commander, David R. Scott, spent almost three days on the Moon¿s surface investigating the Hadley-Apennine site, 462 miles (744 km) north of the lunar equator. The two spent 18 hours outside the Lunar Module, traveled on the Moon¿s surface in a specially designed vehicle, and collected many rocks and core samples. Alfred M. Worden piloted the Command Module, orbiting the Moon while the others worked below. Irwin graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., in 1951 and transferred to the Air Force. He earned a master¿s degree in aeronautical engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1957. At the time he was selected for the manned space program (1966), he was assigned to the Air Defense Command, Colorado Springs, Colo. The Apollo 15 flight was his only space mission. Irwin resigned from the Air Force and the space program in 1972 to form and become president of High Flight Foundation, a Christian evangelical organization.         Fragments sur le devenir universel. Eaux-fortes de François Fiedler.

Sl: Adrien Maeght, 1973. Livre. Illus. by François Fiedler. Très bon. En Feuilles. Dédicacé par l'illustrateur. Grand In-8. Sl, Adrien Maeght, 1973. 28 x 19,5 cm, grand in-8, 2 ff. bl. - 63 ff. n. ch.

The Botany and Chemistry of Hallucinogens

Springfield, Illinois: Charles C. Thomas, 1973. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. xxiii, 267pp. Purple cloth with gilt lettering. Very Good+ with foxed edges and a few of former owner's penciled notes, in slightly soiled and shelf-worn unclipped dust jacket. Binding a little strained from laid-in letters. A collaboration of two titans in the study of psychoactive chemicals, written before their better-known The Plants of the Gods. Schultes is known as the father of ethnobotany, and Hofmann as the father of LSD.Copy of Texas chemistry associate professor Albert R. Machel, author of such articles as "Cyanide Analyses of Peaches." Presentation copy from Schultes, one of only six copies he received from the publisher according to him in a April 24, 1973 letter on Harvard Botanical Museum letterhead; it is included with the book. Schultes writes, "Thank you for your letter of April 2 and for sending the peyote which we value very much for our exhibits." Next paragraph he briefly explains Native American peyote ingestion, and then thanks the former owner for his assistance before the signature line. Also included are three signed, postmarked, single-page letters from Hofmann in Switzerland in Sandoz Labs envelopes and stationary. The first letter from Nov. 6, 1970 thanks Machel for his letter and "four pounds of seeds of Sophora secunidflora," a nicotine-like poisonous plant that Texan Native Americans sometimes ingest before taking peyote. "The quantity you sent me will suffice for the first investigation," Hofmann writes, " I shall ask you again if I need more material," and thanks him for his collaboration. The second envelope, dated September 11, 1972 includes a photocopied typed letter from Hofmann to Schultes about the Sophora secundiflora analysis with Schultes' reproduced holograph along its bottom margin. The enclosed original letter is dated September 8th; in it Hofmann breaks down the results of Sophora, concluding that none of the alkaloids are known to be hallucinogenic, and therefore he is not pharmacologically examining the samples. The final letter from January 26, 1973 regards Machel's previous question about "a general procedure for the extraction of toxic principles from seeds." "No such general procedure exists," Hofmann answers, then briefly outlines some specific extraction procedures.A very special record of correspondence that includes interesting background information on the authors' researches of peyote and the culture associated with its use, spanning the psychedelic era from Sandoz Laboratories (where Hofmann co-discovered LSD in 1943) to the halls of Harvard to rural East Texas.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show ("The Lars Affair"--The July 1973 Revised Script)

1973 - The July 1973 "Revised Production Script" of one of the great early episodes of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show". Approaching the midway point of this landmark comedy series (1970-1977), this episode, pitting the "Happy Homemaker" against a cuckolded Phyllis, was written by Ed. Weinberger --one of the show's principal creative forces-- and fires on all cylinders, with wonderful performances by Mary herself, Ted, Phyllis and Sue Anne Nivens. This script belonged to --and was lightly annotated by-- one of this episode's writing advisers, a woman who performed stand-up in Los Angeles in the 60s and 70s. The script is crisp and Near Fine in its purple wrappers, with typed yellow pages. Tall quarto, an uncommon example of original source material from the show many feel represents the very pinnacle of television. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

The ship departed Scotland on 2nd July, reaching Mineola, New York, on the 6th; four days later she returned to Britain, reaching Pulham, England, on the 13th. The achievement was later described in Patrick Abbott’s book Airship, whose copy is here offered, together with historical and modern commemorative material relating to the flight. Greenland; engineering officer John Shotter; Senior Officer Airship Service General Edward Maitland; navigator Major Gilbert H, Cooke; Special Duties Major J. E. M. Pritchard; Meteorological Officer Lieutenant Guy Harris; the stowaway William Ballantyre, who after initially being rejected for inclusion in the voyage out stowed himself on board and was discovered too late to be parachuted off; and engineer Sergeant A. G. Evenden. Other names that appear are: John W. Davis, United States Ambassador; John Bernard Seeley, Secretary of State for War; the aircraft manufacturer Henry White-Smith; the Earl of Atholl, Chairman of the Royal Aero Club; and W. Heath Robinson, whose name appears on the original sketch of the R.34. The collection also includes part of a letter from Olga O’Riordan, whose name (“Olga Buckley”) had originally appeared on the menu, but which “had bene scratched out very firmly”; O’Riordan was among those Abbott thanks in the acknowledgements to his book.         Writings and Drawings By Bob Dylan.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1973. First edition of this collection of Dylan's writings and drawings. Quarto, original glossy illustrated boards, illustrated endpapers. Boldly signed by Bob Dylan in a contemporary hand on the half-title page. Two color ink used throughout, full page line drawings by Bob Dylan throughout. Includes Dylans's poetry and lyrics of his classic work, including The times they are a changin', Freewheelin', Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde, John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline. In very good condition with some light rubbing and wear. Rare and desirable signed. Dylan's lyrics have incorporated various political, social, philosophical, and literary influences. They defied existing pop music conventions and appealed to the burgeoning counterculture. Initially inspired by the performances of Little Richard, and the songwriting of Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson, and Hank Williams, Dylan has amplified and personalized musical genres. His recording career, spanning 50 years, has explored the traditions in American song--from folk, blues, and country to gospel, rock and roll, and rockabilly to English, Scottish, and Irish folk music, embracing even jazz and the Great American Songbook. Dylan performs with guitar, keyboards, and harmonica. Backed by a changing line-up of musicians, he has toured steadily since the late 1980s on what has been dubbed the Never Ending Tour. His accomplishments as a recording artist and performer have been central to his career, but songwriting is considered his greatest contribution. Dylan has sold more than 100 million records, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. He has also received numerous awards including eleven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award. Dylan has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Minnesota Music Hall of Fame, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and Songwriters Hall of Fame. The Pulitzer Prize jury in 2008 awarded him a special citation for "his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power." In May 2012, Dylan received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama. In 2016 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature.

Cold Cream Alley: A Collection of Poems by Joe Hendrick

Unpaginated 9 x 8 softcover of Joe Hendricks's first printed poetry collection, together with eight art 13 x 12 portfolios containing two prints, and one portfolio containing a three-page musical composition, by: Joe Hendrick, Ramon Santiago, Robert Conge, Joe Matott, Charles W. Haas, Ray Mayo, Robert E. Smith, Julianna Furlong Williams, Lawrence M. Williams, and Gerry Niewood. Also includes single sheet with an introduction by Jacquelyne Schuman, and a photo of the ten contributors on the reverse. The name Cold Cream Alley comes from Rochester, New York's Cold Cream Building, in which Hendrick worked. The images included were created specially for this project, and the portfolios are their first appearance in print. An impressive example of multi-disciplinary creativity, typography, design, and artistic collaboration, similar to some of the productions of various artistic and literary collectives of the 50s, 60s, and 70s (the Beat Poets, Black Mountain Poets, etc.), but also to some of the fine press productions that would become popular somewhat later. Quite scarce - we found 4 copies in institutional collections, three of which are located in Rochester, one other copy offered for sale, and no records of sale at auction. Limited edition, #173 of 250. Hand-numbered and signed by Hendrick on title page, all portfolios hand-numbered and signed by contributors. Tiny spot on front of slipcase. Rochester: GM / DuBois Corp., 1973. Limited Edition. Collectible; Like New/Not Applicable. Hendrick, Joe; Santiago, Ramon; Conge, Robert; Matott, Joe; Haas, Charles W.; Mayo, Ray; Smith, Robert E.; Williams, Julianna Furlong; Williams, Lawrence M.; Niewood, Gerry.
