Autograph Letter, Signed. With Signed photograph.

New York, 1973. Typed letter from author P.G.Wodehouse at his Long Island, NY, home, February 1973, to a fan in Glasgow, Scotland. The author mentions a new book that he is writing, to be finished in the spring, which is most likely 'Batchelors Anonymous' which was published in October. Elegantly mounted, framed and glazed. Total size: 545 x 445 mm. P.G.Wodehouse 1881-1975, English comic novelist, short story writer, lyricist and playwright; wrote for the 'Strand' from 1905-1940. Prior to this he had written for the Strand's companion boy's magazine 'The Captain'. In the Jan.1916 issue he introduced 'Jeeves', the ever resourceful 'gentleman's gentleman', and the good-hearted young blunderer 'Bertie Wooster' of the Drones Club, thus creating two of the most famous and best loved characters in twentieth century literature. He created several other well known series and characters including Uncle Fred, Blandings Castle, and Mr. Mulliner, all appearing monthly in the Strand. Most of his works gently parodied the British aristocracy of the 1920s and 1930s and with passing decades, Wodehouse's picture of Edwardian England eventually became nostalgic. After difficult Wartime years he moved to the United States He took American citizenship in 1955 and was awarded a K.B.E late in life- in a BBC interview he claimed he had no further ambitions, now that he was knighted and had a waxwork of him in Madame Tussauds!

AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY, AND A NEARLY PERFECT COPY IN ORIGINAL SHIPPING BOX. "Les Diners de Gala, the opulent cookbook that [Dali] conceived and illustrated, sets out a surrealist gastro-aesthetics that is at once visceral and ascetic, Dionysian and Catholic... [It] showcases Dali's ornamentation of menus from such legendary restaurants as Maxim's and La Tour d'Argent and features the recipes of their chefs. Dali stages himself within the sumptuous culinary mise-en-scene... Les Diners de Gala moves between 'sado-masochistic pleasure', 'acute sybaritism', Rabelaisian scatology, religious ecstasy, and anaesthetic asceticism." (Richard Gough, On Cooking). With 136 recipes in 12 categories: exotic dishes; eggs & sea food; first course; meats; snails & frogs; fish & shell fish; game & poultry; pork; vegetables; aphrodisiacs; desserts; hors-d' oeuvre.         Vermilion Sands

The First UK Printing published by Jonathan Cape in 1973. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Very slight bowing to the rear cover otherwise a very sharp copy with no erasures or inscriptions. Clean boards with bright gilt titling. The pages are clean with no spotting or toning. The pink top-stain is still present and with just a hint of fading adjacent to the spine. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition with only light fading to the lower spine area with preservation of the red lettering (which commonly fades). A tiny amount of creasing at the upper front fold tip and a hint of rippling to the rear cover portion. The Brian Knight wrapper artwork looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The front flap details: 'Kingsley Amis calls Ballard 'one of the brightest stars in post-war fiction'. From his superb imagination he has this time conjured up violent and nightmarish dramas heightened both by the intensity of the landscape and by the twisted, overlit emotions of its denizins'. An increasingly difficult title to find in such collectible condition. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

[POSTER]. Gilbert & George will present their Singing Sculptures "Underneath the Arches"

(The most intelligent, fascinating, serious and beautiful art piece you have ever seen). Melbourne : National Gallery of Victoria, [1973]. Printed poster, 650 x 460 mm. Exhibition poster for an early performance piece by Gilbert & George organised by Kaldor Art Projects. Rare. Provenance : the estate of the late Jennifer Phipps, former curator of art at the National Gallery of Victoria. "For Project 3 in 1973, Gilbert & George presented The Singing Sculpture in both Sydney and Melbourne, merging sculpture and performance and bringing art into everyday life. With their faces and hands painted with a mix of bronze-coloured metallic powder and Vaseline, and a table as their plinth, they sang along to the song of two Depression-era tramps, ‘Underneath the arches’, slowly repeating a series of gestures and circling mechanically like figures inside a music box. Gilbert & George are now among the most famous living British artists, known for their signature billboard-sized pictures in bright neon colours, showing them together, suited or naked, among a kaleidoscope of images and symbols. The Singing Sculpture is now recognised as the art piece that launched their career. It embodied and communicated their idiosyncratic personae and the concept of ‘living sculpture’ that has informed their lives and art over 40 years. Gilbert & George met in the 1960s as students at St Martin’s School of Art where they began to explore radical ideas such as portable sculpture and in 1969 they removed the mediation of the art object entirely, shifting focus to the actions and rituals of their daily lives as ‘Living Sculpture’. Wearing timeless, tailored suits and neckties, they adopted a posture of genteel decorum, enacted through a flow of polite interactions and formal modes of correspondence. They invited audiences to Lecture Sculpture and Meal Sculpture, or to view Walking Sculpture and Magazine Sculpture. The Singing Sculpture visualised Gilbert & George in their new role as an art object. First exhibited in a variety of guises at London art schools, music events and festivals, wherever they could find it a home, after a number of guerrilla presentations the sculpture began to gain momentum and they were invited to travel and present it overseas. The Singing Sculpture was shown 26 times between 1969 and 1972, across Germany, cities in Italy, Belgium, Norway and Switzerland, and at the newly opened Sonnabend Gallery in New York, before the final presentations of the piece in Australia in 1973. Crowds flocked to see The Singing Sculpture in Australia, many staying to watch the work for hours at a time. In Sydney, ‘Underneath the arches’ was repeated 112 times a day, presented for five hours each day over six days in the entrance court of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, then for five hours a day over five days at Melbourne's National Gallery of Victoria. As part of the environment for the work, Gilbert & George also displayed large ‘charcoal-on-paper sculptures’, across the gallery walls." - Kaldor Art Projects websitehttp://kaldorartprojects.org.au/projects/project-03-gilbert-and-george

TLS From Guy Bolton To Peter Schwed

Np Nd [?], London 1973 - 2pp. TLS, on blue Buck's Club headed notepaper. Very well preserved, lacking the envelope. TLS FROM GUY BOLTON TO WODEHOUSE'S EDITOR AT SIMON AND SCHUSTER, PETER SCHWED, DISCUSSING THE PLAN OF ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER AND TIM RICE TO WRITE A JEEVES AND WOOSTER MUSICAL. 'Hot from the success of Jesus Christ, Superstar, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber made the pilgrimage to Remsenberg with their next project, Jeeves. Wodehouse feared it would be a flop, but encouraged 'the boys' in a venture that, after his death, fulfilled his predictions.' (McCrum) Wodehouse was not the only one to have concerns about the wisdom of embarking on the project, as this letter to Peter Schwed from Wodehouse's lifelong friend and collaborator, Guy Bolton, shows: 'Dear Peter, The J.C. Superstar boys, Webber and Rice, are writing a musical to be based on Bertie Wooster and Jeeves. They have engaged me to act in an advisory capacity and I would greatly appreciate a private word from you that might steer the ship away from the rocks to some degree. . They have chosen The Code Of The Woosters as their 'book' and I cannot believe there isn't a better choice.' Bolton goes on to identify precisely the problem any and every Wodehouse adaptation faces: 'The catch is, as I'm sure you will agree, is [sic] that the pleasure derived from these books is the narrative as spun out by Bertie Wooster with all its allusions, his thoughts and emotions and display of character. This is largely lost in a play and you are left with 'scenes'.' Bolton makes clear his objection is to the idea, and not to those whose idea it was: 'Andrew Webber, who, in my opinion, is a superb talent has written a complete score that is utterly delicious. Tim Rice's lyrics . are also amusing and original but he has too much faith in Plum's every turn of story.' What ever you say you will be saying to me alone and certainly not to Plum. My affection for him, and indeed my admiration, is unbounded but I want to help him and two very charming and talented young men from running into a disaster.' Bolton was pushing ninety when he wrote this letter, and his backstage attempt to help his doddery friend of ninety-three dodge a bullet is infinitely touching, but in the end it proved futile. Rice bailed as lyricist in the early stages of the show's development. His place was taken by Alan Ayckbourn, but the show ran into exactly the problems Bolton had predicted. At its try-out run in Bristol, Jeeves, starring David Hemmings and Michael Aldridge, was running at just under five hours, which is pretty much bang-on for Eugene O'Neill but a touch on the long side for a musical comedy. The show limped in to London in April 1975, and limped out again in May. A superb letter written in Wodehouse's interest, by one of his very closest friends.

A complete run (each issue ca. 50-90 pp.) of the first two series of the Argentinian political, satirical, erotic, humorous, and artistically subversive monthly, profusely illustrated throughout with cartoons, caricatures, and photographs, including a bonus issue from December 1973, "Edición Extraordinaria Fin de Año". Issue no. 24 a color photocophy, not original printed publication. 4to. Orig. illus. wrpps., some creasing and bumping, overall very fine condition. Buenos Aires (Aurea Editora, Editores Asociados) 1972-1976. Satiricón is widely considered to be the publication that revolutionized graphic humor and satire in Argentina and created a new form of humor in the press. Its main focus overall was on sex and politics, and during the years of its publication, it suffered several breaks in printing due to censorship. Important writers and illustrators who contributed to the publication included Oskar Blotta, Carlos Duelo Cavero, Landrú, José Miguel Meredia, Flax (Lino Palacio), Leopoldo Durañona, Oski, Calol, Bróccoli, Miguel Brascó, Julio Lagos, Fontanarorosa, Oscar Fernández, Daniel Branca, Carlos Biotta, Andrés Cascioli, Alfredo Grondona White, and Aldo Rivero. Although Satiricón had a large circulation at the time, complete sets today are scarce.

BRASSAÏ - lettre autographe signée concernant une exposition aux USA

      - Lettre autographe signée à sa chère Babeth. New York, 4 juin 1973 ; 2 pages in-4° sur 2 feuillets. The Koran, commonly called the Alcoran of Mohammed, ...London, Charles Ackers for John Wilcox, 1734. Large 4to (25.5 x 20.5 cm). With 5 engraved plates: a large folding map of the Arabian peninsula (with an inset view of the "Temple at Mecca"), a folding plan and view of the "Temple at Mecca", and 3 family trees (2 folding). Contemporary calf, gold-tooled board edges. Rebacked.

Fück, Die Arabischen studien, p. 104; P.M. Holt, Studies in the history of the Near East (1973), pp. 57-60; Schnurrer, p. 429. First edition of the first English Quran to be translated directly from the Arabic: a landmark not only in efforts to bring an accurate version of the Quran to the English-speaking world, but also in Western Quranic studies in general. It also includes Sale's 7-page note to the reader, with criticisms of earlier translations into English and other languages, his 187-page preliminary discourse bringing together a wealth of information about Islamic culture, and valuable scholarly footnotes, including material from the Islamic commentaries of al-Baydawi and al-Suyuti. Holt notes his "enlightened and objective attitude" in sharp contrast with most Western Arabists of his day or earlier: "His freedom from religious prejudice ..., his obvious conviction that Arabic writers were the best source of Arab history, and Muslim commentators the fittest to expound the Quran, marks an enormous advance ...". Sale's English translation remains highly regarded today. In fine condition and only slightly trimmed. The binding is rebacked and has several restorations, but is otherwise good and remains structurally sound. A landmark edition of the Qur'an and the first good English translation.
