        Wintering Out (First Hardcover Printing)

        Sky and Earth: Variable Landscape

Janus Press, Newark, VT 1973 - 39 sheets of colored acetate and die-cut paper, in a folding cloth portfolio. 8 by 10 inches (roughly). In this wordless book (the only text is the title and publishing information, printed on the front pastedown), Van Vliet reinterprets the ideas in her landmark 1964 work, Sun, Sky, and Earth. In that book, flaps of various shapes and colors could be flipped open to create minimalist landscapes abstracted to simple shapes and colors. Some of the flaps included descriptive words. In this 'book', Van Vliet has abstracted not only the elements of landscape but the book itself. The 'flaps' are no longer attached to the binding, leaving the 'reader' (there is no text, but what else would we call the user of a book?) free to rearrange the sheets at will. One can even conjure a science fiction landscape of many suns, rising or setting in a sky of unearthly colors. Van Vliet's work in the 1960s and early 1970s is sometimes associated with the Fluxus Movement, and certainly this book, with its inherently random user experience, embodies some of those ideas, books have always exerted only loose control over their readers and they are experienced only in the imagination. It only took visual artists 15 centuries to work out what users of the codex have known all along. One of 100 unnumbered copies (see Ruth Fine, The Janus Press). A small limitation and given that institutions hold more than half of the print run, rather uncommon in commerce. First edition (first printing). A fine, complete copy.         Poems.

Privately Printed. 1973. 8vo., original card wrappers. A little staining to upper wrapper otherwise a very good copy. First edition, limited edition of 80 numbered copies. Posthumously printed by her widower, this unusual but endearingly sincere production has the poet's introduction to the first part describes it as "A series of 27 verses written by me at different times during a period of several years research into the character and motives of T.E. Lawrence." This was the copy of Reggie Sims, and has a gift inscription from Rivington's widower: one of the poems is "For Reggie and Hilda Sims and their house at Hornsea." Wing Commander Reginald Sims had a brief but intense friendship with Lawrence on his terminal service posting in Bridlington. He was a keen photographer, and took a wellknown series of photographs of Lawrence. On Lawrence's death he undertook the organisation of the photographic display at Clouds Hill.

The Black Doll, A Silent Film by Edward Gorey

New York: Gotham Book Mart, 1973. 1st and Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Gorey, Edward. No. 86 of 100 copies, 12 mo - over 6.75" to 7.75" tall, 54 pp., Signed by Author(s). Only the inimitable Edward Gorey (1925-2000), noted for his eerie and wonderful illustrations, could so successfully publish a book with a single, small illustration on the front cover, telling a story in the form of theatre - the fact that it works so well speaks to his genius. This is one of the few stories told by Gorey in prose instead of in pictures, with stage directions and screen shots told as part of the story - it ends "Slow motion. The Black Doll falls through the air. The camera follows it down, but it vanishes below frame. The words THE END appear against the empty air". ***DESCRIPTION: Black paper over boards, white paper label on the front of the jacket with Gorey's illustration of the Black Doll, First Printing stated on copyright page, colophon page with Mr. Gorey's signature and the number of this volume, being 86 of 100 numbered copies (plus 26 lettered copies not for sale), publisher's device on the verso of the colophon page; duodecimo size (approximately 7" tall), pagination: (1)-52, colophon (53), blank with publisher's device (54).
