        No Beast So Fierce

New York: Norton. (1973). First. First edition. Fine in near fine dustwrapper with three modest tears. Advance Review Copy with slip and two promotional photos of the author from the book (one a pair of mug shots; the other a montage of photos of Bunker in prison). A brutal, hardboiled novel by an ex-con about criminals and violent crime. The author's first book, filmed as cult favorite Straight Time with Dustin Hoffman, Teresa Wright, Gary Busey, Harry Dean Stanton, M. Emmet Walsh, and Kathy Bates. Bunker played a bit part in the film, and later continued to surface as an actor in small, hip roles (most notably as Mr. Blue in Reservoir Dogs). Bunker also co-wrote the screenplay for another cult prison film, Runaway Train, and he also wrote and appeared in the film made from his novel Animal Factory, directed by Steve Buscemi. A fresh and bright copy. .

Collected fish papers of Pieter Bleeker. Collected and edited by W. H. Lamme. Volumes I-XIV (complete).

. The Hague, W. Junk, 1973-1979. In 14 volumes. 8vo. Frontispiece portrait, numerous text pages and plates. Uniform printed cloth.* The all-important complete reprint edition of all the original fish papers by this eminent ichthyologist, including an English translation of his autobiography, and a fascimile reprint of the auction catalogue of Bleeker's fabulous fish collection. Pieter Bleeker (1819-1878) was one of the most productive 19th century ichthyologists, identifying and describing nearly 2000 new fish species, and introducing more than 500 new genera. In Dean's "Bibliography of the fishes" the list of Bleeker's publication occupies more than 20 full pages; more than any other author. His main area of study was the so called Malayan Archipelago, including the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia), now known to be a biological hot-spot. Bleeker's papers were published in many books and periodicals over a long period of time, and it is near-impossible to compile a complete set his writings. The publisher's price was Dfl. 3.000 (EUR 1300). A very good, clean, unmarked set. Dean I, pp. 118-138..

Lowell and Stafford had a tempestuous marriage that ended in 1948 but they remained friends. Loosely inserted in this copy is a short typed letter by one of the proprietors of the Argosy, confirming this book's provenance.

[Manuscript]: In This Corner: 40 Boxing Titleholders Tell Their Own Stories. [Published title]: In This Corner: Forty World Champions Tell Their Stories

New York: Simon & Schuster. (1973). First. Bound manuscript. Introduction by Muhammad Ali. Quarto. Unpaginated. Typed carbon copies on pink and yellow carbon paper. Contemporary full cloth stamped in gilt with the title and author and: "Original Manuscript. March 16, 1973. To Sally... With Love." Dampstain mostly visible only on the front fly, a single word also on the front fly, else very good or better. Inscribed on the title page at a later date: "To Joe McMahon from Muhammad Ali 6-4-89." The carbon manuscript displays corrections in type and some penciled corrections, including the addition of Sugar Ray Robinson to the contents and a typed-in addition of Jose Torres. A cursory comparison to the printed book reveals a multitude of changes from this manuscript version. Interviews with Jack Dempsey, Mickey Walker, Pete Herman, Gunboat Smith, Fidel LaBarba, Tommy Loughran, Jack Sharkey, Rocky Graziano, Jake LaMotta, Carmen Basilio, Joe Louis, Willie Pep, Henry Armstrong, Sugar Ray Robinson, Jose Torres, Emile Griffith, Floyd Patterson, Archie Moore, and several others. The recipient of the book was Sally Drell, whom the author referred to in the acknowledgments: "And finally my thanks to Sally Drell, for coming into my life... and for bringing with her the title for this book." Joe McMahon is presumably a collector who sought out Ali at a later date. Regarded by many to be among the best books on boxing, this is a unique copy. .

[Broadside Program]: de l'ame pour l'ame (of the soul for the soul) An Evening Honoring the first true poet and seer Arthur Rimbaud 20 Octobre 1854 10 Novembre 1891

[New York: Gotham Book Mart?. 1973]. First. First edition. Single blue folio leaf printed on the recto only. Fine. Line portrait drawing of Rimbaud by Smith at the top of the sheet above the text. The text lists the evening's program, along with a quote from Rimbaud: "The poet makes himself a seer by long, gigantic, and rational derangement of the senses. All forms of love, suffering, and madness. He searches himself. He exhausts all poisons in himself and keeps only their quintessences..." Also mentions: "special appreciation to the Wartoke Concern, Robert Mapplethorpe, Dennis Florio, Sharon Ensko, Sam Wagstaff and Gotham Book Mart." A very rare program from one of Patti Smith's earliest performances, predating her first album by two years. The first of three performances in honor of the anniversary of Rimbaud's death (also known as "Rock-n-Rimbaud"), it took place on the roof of Le Jardin, the gay disco in the Hotel Diplomat on November 4, 1973. Smith, dressed in an evening dress and feather boa, sang and recited her own works, as well as songs by Kurt Weil and Hank Ballard, backed up by Bill Elliot and future Patti Smith Group guitarist Lenny Kaye (only the second time that Smith and Kaye performed together). Rare. Not in OCLC. .

The Sermon on the Mount from the Gospel of St. Matthew, Chapters 5, 6, 7

Worcester, MA: Achille J. St. Onge, 1973. 55pp. The text is printed with large ornamental initials in red by Joh. Enschedé en Zonen. In a striking designer binding by Stephen Conway, evoking ancient wood and stone. Conway writes that his bindings "have a tactile quality, in keeping with the three dimensional qualities of the book," and "a sort of earthy, minimalist look, hinting at the content." The central panel of the covers is comprised of plinth with three steps, covered in parchment stained with tones of copper and bronze. In the center is a cross cut from vellum. The four surrounding panels are covered with hand-painted paste paper patterned with wood grain, sealed with a matte wax finish. The panels are slightly separated, revealing underlays of black text between them. Conway also painted the endpapers with textural shades of brown and black, giving them the appearance of wood and bark. The spine is gilt-titled mahogany morocco. Following his belief that the box in which a book is housed is part of the overall work, and serves to enhance the viewer's experience, the book sits in a felt-lined compartment between the steps of a larger three-level plinth covered in hand-painted parchment. Conway was named a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 2000, and his work is held in collections worldwide, including the National Library of Scotland and The British Library. He is the current President of Designer Bookbinders. Extremely fine. (2 1/2 by 1 3/4; 64x43mm).

The Life of Edward Lord Herbert Of Cherbury, Written by himself.

Strawberry-Hill: Printed in the Year MDCCLXIV. [1764]. First edition. One of 200 copies printed by the Strawberry Hill Press; Porchester/Munson Havens' copy. Hazen (1973); #11, pp. 68-72. - Size of binding: 7 3/4 in. x 10 in., frontispiece is a fold-out engraving of the Oliver painting of Herbert of Cherbury, engraved by Anthony Walker (1726-65); title-page with engraved vignette of Horace Walpole's Strawberry Hill; Dedication to the Earl of Powis; Advertisement. Pp. [i]-[x], pp. [1]-171. Bound in full, mottled, 18th century calf, with five raised bands on the spine, with five spine compartments with gilt floral design tooling, and a red leather title label reading: LIFE OF LD. HERBERT; single line gilt borders around the front & back covers, gilt designs on cover edges, early marbled paper endpapers, dark green silk ribbon bookmarker bound in (this has left some tanning at gutter of pp. 148-149). These age-related defects are noted: lower front & back cover corners are bumped, general edge wear to the cover edges, spine ends, hinges at spine, covers show some wear (abrasions) to the leather surface; small ink spot to book fore-edge, 2 in. tear to fore-edge/page margin of pp. 155-156, some tanning to book edges, tan spotting to flyleaves. With the engraved, heraldic Porchester ("Ung Je Serviray") bookplate on the front paste-down, & pasted shelf numbers: P c 27; the facing marbled endpaper has the Havens' bookplate, reading: Munson Havens and Hetty Ganson Havens Their Book (featuring a silhouette of a couple seated in rocking chairs & reading). This is completely unrestored, or cleaned copy from the personal collection of Rowfant Club member & author, Munson Havens (1873-1942), who wrote: "Horace Walpole and the Strawberry-Hill Press 1757-1789", published as the first book of the Kirgate Press, in 1901. Havens, among other book-collecting interests, collected the publications of the Strawberry Hill Press, this is one of the few from his personal collection which is now available. The scan shows the spine & front cover. Havens' lists this famous title at page 77 of his book as: "1764 Life of Edward, Lord Hebert of Cherbury. Small quarto. 200 copies printed.", and says at p. 40 of his work: “Prat also printed a short ‘Life of Lord Herbert of Cherbury,’ written by himself, a quarto, which Walpole declared to be ‘by far the most curious and entertaining book’ that his press had produced. It was ‘the thing most in fashion;’ people were ‘mad after it,’ he believed ‘because only two hundred were printed.’ [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Neruda: entierro y testamento

Inventarios Provisionales, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 1973 - "In September 1973, Fina Torres, a photojournalist active in Venezuela at that time, was in Santiago during the coup that overthrew the government of the Unidad Popular. She photographed the damage done by the artillery to the facade of the Palacio de la Moneda, the armed soldiers in the streets, and other unsettling scenes of everyday life at the time: the cleaning of painted slogans from the walls, people lining up to buy food, the surveillance of the embassies, and the anguished seriousness of people waiting outside the morgue. Photographs of similar scenes can be found in the photobook Chili September 1973 by Koen Wessing, one of whose images is virtually identical to another taken by Torres. Both photographed a dark-haired girl standing at the door of the nourgue and showing the ID photo of a soldier. Torres decided to repeat the image to show more clearly the features of the young man who had disappeared, and Wessing did the same. Ten days after the coup, the poet Pablo Neruda died in a clinic in Santiago. Torres photographed the funeral procession, which also laid to rest the Unidad Popular and a whole era of leftist aspirations. The procession turned into a demonstration, in spite of the menacing presence of numerous armed soldiers. Fina Torres left a testimony of the vigil held around the dead body of Neruda. As she racalls, she was "the only photographer in the writer's residence on the day of his death." The house had been entered and sacked by the soldiers, an event almost prophesied in the lines "Traitor / generals: / behold my dead house" from España en el Corazon. The photos show empty shelves, ashes from the auto-da-fé, open closets, flooded rooms, and other signs of plunder and destruction - images of the desolation that the deceased poet's relatives, also captured by Torres' camera, seem not to notice" Horacio Fernandez in The Latin American Photobook, p 102. Text in Spanish: Sarmiento Alvaro. 47 BW ills by Torres Fina cm 14x19; pp. 152; 48 BW ills.; paperback in fine condition. A wonderful and rare document of a serious photobook.

Regarded by many to be among the best books on boxing, this is a unique copy. .
